Abstract
Choriocarcinoma of the ovary is a rare, highly malignant tumor showing malignant trophoblastic cells and produces human chorionic gonadotropins. It can be classified as gestational and non-gestational choriocarcinoma. Non-gestational choriocarcinoma is extremely rare. Treatment is Methotrexate-based chemotherapy for the gestational type. This case study is a rare case of ovarian choriocarcinoma managed by surgical resection, followed by methotrexate-based chemotherapy, and aimed to evaluate the ultrasound characteristics of ovarian choriocarcinoma and how to arrive at the diagnosis. In cases with an elevated serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta hCG), the finding of a highly vascularized adnexal mass on ultrasound evaluation should be underlined as a clue for suspecting choriocarcinoma, particularly if the female was young with no marriage history or history of sexual intercourse and also to be highly considered in married females with history of repeated abortions, molar pregnancy or uterine choriocarcinoma.

Abstract
Uterine leiomyosarcoma is a high-grade sarcoma that might be associated with dismal outcome. There are no hematological markers that can be used to follow up the recurrence and/or progression of the tumor. We present a case of a 44-year-old female, who was diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma. During her management course, serum beta human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) elevation was correlated with clinical and radiological disease progression on two separate occasions. This correlation should be further investigated to potentially integrate serum β-hCG as a predictive tool for clinical behavior and treatment response.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of quantitative human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) as a tumor marker is widely accepted despite lack of FDA-approval for oncology. Differences in iso- and glycoform recognition among hCG immunoassays is well established, exhibiting wide inter-method variability. Here, we assess the utility of 5 quantitative hCG immunoassays for use as tumor markers in trophoblastic and non-trophoblastic disease. METHODS Remnant specimens were obtained from 150 patients with gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD), germ cell tumors (GCT), or other malignancies. Specimens were identified by review of results from physician-ordered hCG and tumor marker testing. Five analyzer platforms were used for split specimen analysis of hCG: Abbott Architect Total, Roche cobas STAT, Roche cobas Total, Siemens Dimension Vista Total, and Beckman Access Total. RESULTS Frequency of elevated hCG concentrations (above reference cutoffs) was highest in GTD (100%), followed by GCT (55% to 57%), and other malignancies (8% to 23%). Overall, the Roche cobas Total detected elevated hCG in the greatest number of specimens (63/150). Detection of elevated hCG in trophoblastic disease was nearly equivalent among all immunoassays (range, 41 to 42/60). CONCLUSIONS While no immunoassay is likely to be perfect in all clinical situations, results for the 5 hCG immunoassays evaluated suggest that all are adequate for use of hCG as a tumor marker in gestational trophoblastic disease and select germ cell tumors. Further harmonization of hCG methods is needed as serial testing for biochemical tumor monitoring must still be performed using a single method. Additional studies are needed to assess the utility of quantitative hCG as a tumor marker in other malignant disease.

Abstract
Despite advances in cancer medicine and research, invasive and potentially risky procedures such as biopsies, venous blood tests, imaging, colonoscopy, and pap smear tests are still primarily used for screening, staging, and assessing response to therapy. The development and interdisciplinary use of biomarkers from urine, feces, saliva, scent, and capillary blood collected with minimally invasive methods represents a potential opportunity for integration with biomarker analysis for cancers, both in clinical practice (e.g., in screening, treatment, and disease monitoring, and improved quality of life for patients) and population-based research (e.g., in epidemiology/public health, studies of social and environmental determinants, and evolutionary medicine). In this article, we review the scientific rationale, benefits, challenges, and potential opportunities for measuring cancer-related biomarkers in samples collected through minimally invasive methods.

Abstract
We present the case of a 54-year-old woman diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma that produced beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), evident by both serum and immunohistologic examination. Based on this and similar cases from the available literature, β-hCG-producing sarcomas tend to have poorer prognosis, indicating that β-hCG could potentially be used as a marker of disease status and response to the therapy; however, this association is inconsistent and should be further investigated.

Abstract
Ovarian fibromas are benign tumors that consist of spindle cells in bundles or storiformly arranged with collagen fibers in the stroma. Thecomas resemble theca interna ovarian cells, and there is lipid material in their cytoplasm. There is an overlap in histological and immunohistochemical characteristics of these two benign tumors, and the term "fibrothecoma" was coined to describe such cases. Their incidence is extremely rare in adolescents. The subject of our study is a 15-year-old, unmarried, virgo intacta patient who was referred to us due to profuse vaginal bleeding and the loss of consciousness. A right ovary ultrasound examination exposed the formation of a hyperechoic tumor with a diameter of 41.2 mm × 29.5 mm. Findings of cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) in the amounts of 621.1 U/mL and 142.87 mIU/mL of the B-human chorionic gonadotropin (B-hCG) serum were determined. After preoperative preparation, we operated on the patient to remove a tumor with a diameter of 37 mm × 30 mm × 22 mm, smooth outer surface, solid cross-section, and yellowish white color. The diagnosis of fibrothecoma was made based on pathohistological examination. An unusual finding of fibrothecoma in a virgo intacta adolescent with profuse vaginal bleeding and increased levels of CA 125 and B-hCG may serve as a basis for broader thinking about the pathology of juvenile bleeding.

Abstract
Uterine choriocarcinoma is a trophoblastic neoplasm most commonly related to pregnancy. However, there are already cases of non-gestational uterine choriocarcinoma (NGC) described in literature. The difficult diagnosis may delay treatment and threaten patient survival. We report the case of a 37-year-old patient presenting with abnormal haemorrhage and moderate levels of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG). As imaging exams did not show any suspicious site for the origin, choriocarcinoma was not considered so the treatment was delayed. Anatomopathological diagnosis was given both from the surgical sample of hysterectomy and from a skin lesion. The lesion was discovered inside a myoma. At this point, β-hCG levels were substantially high and she presented with respiratory distress due to pulmonary metastasis. The patient was transferred to an intensive care unit and underwent mechanical ventilation as well as life-saving chemotherapy. At 10 months after diagnosis, she is well and in remission. The delay from not suspecting the diagnosis was almost fatal for the patient.

Abstract
The International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) organized a Consultation Conference in March 2019 dealing with applications of molecular pathology in Urogenital Pathology, including testicular tumors (with a focus on germ cell tumors [GCTs]), preceded by a survey among its members to get insight into current practices in testicular germ cell tumor (TGCT) diagnostics and adoption of the ISUP immunohistochemical guidelines published in 2014. On the basis of the premeeting survey, the most commonly used immunomarker panel includes OCT3/4, placental alkaline phosphate, D2-40, SALL4, CD117, and CD30 for GCTs and the documentation of germ cell neoplasia in situ (GCNIS). Molecular testing, specifically 12p copy gain, is informative to distinguish non-GCNIS versus GCNIS related GCTs, and establishing germ cell origin of tumors both in the context of primary and metastatic lesions. Other molecular methodologies currently available but not widely utilized for TGCTs include genome-wide and targeted approaches for specific genetic anomalies, P53 mutations, genomic MDM2 amplification, and detection of the p53 inactivating miR-371a-3p. The latter also holds promise as a serum marker for malignant TGCTs. This manuscript provides an update on the classification of TGCTs, and describes the current and future role of molecular-genetic testing. The following recommendations are made: (1) Presence of GCNIS should be documented in all cases along with extent of spermatogenesis; (2) Immunohistochemical staining is optional in the following scenarios: identification of GCNIS, distinguishing embryonal carcinoma from seminoma, confirming presence of yolk sac tumor and/or choriocarcinoma, and differentiating spermatocytic tumor from potential mimics; (3) Detection of gain of the short arm of chromosome 12 is diagnostic to differentiate between non-GCNIS versus GCNIS related GCTs and supportive to the germ cell origin of both primary and metastatic tumors.

Abstract
Detectable serum levels of beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (βhCG) in nonpregnant, perimenopausal women bring confusion in both clinician and patient and could lead to unnecessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. A 45-year-old woman with the continuous elevation of βhCG underwent hysteroscopy, two laparoscopic surgeries, two explorative uterine cavity curettages and three cycles of cytostatic therapy. No ultrasonographic, macroscopic or histological signs of pregnancy, both uterine and ectopic or gestational trophoblastic disease were found. Both radiographic and computed tomography reports ruled out the presence of a nongynecological neoplasm. All recommended steps were taken for confirmation or ruling out the possibility of heterophile antibodies interference, but the results were not absolute. Finally, the referent laboratory confirmed the presence of the antibodies, but their exact type remains unknown. This case underlines the importance of the universally accepted protocol in the cases of persistent βhCG elevation in nonpregnant, perimenopausal women.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Elevated serum beta human chorionic gonadotrophin (β-hCG) in a female normally indicates pregnancy or possibly, gestational trophoblastic disease or ovarian germ cell tumours. Expression of β-hCG has been demonstrated in cervical and endometrial carcinoma and other non-germ cell tumours of the ovary, vulva, breast, prostate, lung, colon, oral/facial tissue and stomach. CASE REPORT We report a 43-year-old premenopausal woman with p16 positive squamous cell anal cancer. Pre-treatment urinary screening was positive for β-hCG (218 IU/L), which was confirmed on serum and expressed in the tumour. Pelvic ultrasound ruled out pregnancy. Cervical cytology detected human papilloma virus p16 infection and a potential squamous intraepithelial lesion. Management and outcome: She received definitive chemoradiation (Mitomycin/5-fluorouracil) for six weeks. β-hCG, taken four weeks post completion, had returned to normal levels (<2 IU/L). DISCUSSION Cases of elevated serum β-hCG are documented in different cancers including breast, gastric, lung, ovarian and renal cell. In our case, the elevated β-hCG is probably ectopic excretion by the squamous cell carcinoma tumour in the anus. While this has never been reported previously in the anus, it is likely due to the documented risk of development of precancerous as well as cancerous anal and cervical lesions through human papilloma virus infection. Raised levels of β-hCG have been reported in cervical cancers. Other possible causes of β-hCG elevation were excluded. Following treatment, her β-hCG level returned to normal strengthening the hypothesis that β-hCG elevation was due to the anal carcinoma. In conclusion, unexplained ectopic secretion of β-hCG may be the first sign of a primary malignancy.

Abstract
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone that is used in clinical practice to detect pregnancy and serves as a sensitive marker for trophoblastic tumors. Other organs besides placental trophoblasts naturally express the hormone at low levels, which can be elevated in nontrophoblastic malignancies. Some studies have suggested that elevated β-hCG levels in nontrophoblastic tumors are a sign of aggressive disease and strongly associated with poor prognosis. We describe a case of a 50-year-old post-menopausal woman with metastatic duodenal adenocarcinoma who presented with a negative pregnancy test that later changed to positive. Biopsy of the primary duodenal mass showed positive immunohistochemical expression of β-hCG. The patient was also found to have multiple brain metastases, which is uncommon in gastrointestinal cancer. This is a rare case of paraneoplastic syndrome in a β-hCG-secreting duodenal adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
Background Elevated β-HCG serum levels are usually an indication of pregnancy or pregnancy-related disorders, but β-HCG can also be elevated in testis and germ cell tumors. HCG expression by osteosarcoma is a rare phenomenon, with a few documented cases. CA-125 is commonly used to monitor disease progression and treatment response in ovarian cancer. CA-125 expression in patients with osteosarcoma has not previously been documented. Case report Elevated β-HCG and CA-125 serum levels were observed in a female patient of 57 years of age with metastatic osteosarcoma during screening investigations prior to participation in a phase I clinical trial. Pregnancy was excluded. Immunohistochemical studies revealed the tumor to be the source of the elevated β-HCG serum levels. We found no CA-125 expression in tumor tissue. The patient was treated with E7080, a novel oral multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor. We measured serum β-HCG and CA-125 to monitor treatment response. She had a significant clinical and radiological response after two cycles of treatment, but developed progressive disease after the third cycle. The β-HCG serum levels seemed to better reflect her disease status than those of the other tumor marker, CA-125. Conclusions When elevated, β-HCG serum levels in patients with osteosarcoma might be used to monitor treatment. Treatment of advanced osteosarcoma with tyrosine kinase inhibitors, including E7080, warrants further investigation. Free full text available at www.tumorionline.it

Abstract
There is a broad range of possible diagnoses for an elevated beta human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) in the absence of intrauterine or ectopic pregnancy. When women of child bearing potential undergo evaluation for clinical trial, it is often unclear what course of evaluation to take when a pregnancy test is positive. We describe the clinical course of a patient with widely metastatic mucinous ovarian carcinoma with metastasis to the peritoneum, lymph nodes and liver. The patient was found to have a mildly elevated β-hCG during initial evaluation for clinical trial. Extensive work up for ectopic pregnancy, trophoblastic disease, and phantom β-hCG were negative. The patient's β-hCG levels continued to rise until initiation of therapy. She was treated on a phase I protocol with restaging scans revealing a partial response. The β-hCG was retested and declined in conjunction with her response, consistent with paraneoplastic β-hCG. Here, we propose a decision making algorithm to evaluate a patient with an elevated β-hCG undergoing assessment for clinical trial. Evaluation of positive pregnancy test during clinical trial accrual is difficult. We describe a case of a woman with metastatic ovarian cancer. The patient was found to have an elevated β-hCG during clinical trial evaluation. We propose a decision making algorithm to evaluate these patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG-β) is considered to be a useful tumor marker for germ cell tumors (GCTs); however, various tumors other than GCTs, including cystic pituitary adenomas, Rathke's cleft cysts, and craniopharyngiomas, were reported to express HCG-β. CASE REPORT We herein present the case of a 5-year-old boy who presented with polyuria and had a solitary lesion in the neurohypophysis with a positive HCG-β titer in the cerebrospinal fluid. Under a preoperative diagnosis of germinoma, a biopsy was performed from the posterior pituitary lobe via the transsphenoidal endoscopic approach and the histological diagnosis was revealed to be Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). CONCLUSIONS The finding of a slightly positive HCG-β titer in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cannot exclude the possibility of LCH, and we strongly recommend a histological diagnosis for the diagnosis of a solitary neurohypophysial lesion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To provide clarity on the use of qualitative and quantitative human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) tests for the assessment of pregnancy. METHODS A case scenario and a brief review of the relevant literature describing clinical and analytical considerations regarding hCG testing are presented. RESULTS In pregnancy, hCG is nearly always detectable in serum and urine within 16 days after ovulation. Serial hCG testing is valuable in the evaluation of suspected ectopic pregnancy. hCG assays vary in their analytical specificity, and qualitative tests may be less analytically sensitive than claimed. Erroneous hCG test results can occur for several reasons. CONCLUSIONS hCG assays are reliable diagnostic tests for pregnancy assessment, but a clear understanding of their limitations is necessary for appropriate result interpretation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumors are rare tumors of mesenchymal origins, most commonly seen arising from the pleural lining of the lungs. These are generally benign tumors, which in rare cases have been identified to be associated with multiple para-neoplastic syndromes. CASE REPORT This is a case of a solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura in a 49 year old female which was found to be associated with elevated levels of serum beta human chorionic gonadotropin β-hCG). Due to the lack of plausible causes for elevated β-hCG in the patient, immune-histochemical staining of the tumor specimen for β-hCG was obtained. This confirmed the patient's solitary fibrous tumor as the source of the β-hCG. The patient was also found to have a possible paraneoplastic syndrome with irregular menstruation and hot flushes from the secreted β-hCG. CONCLUSIONS This is the first reported case of solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura producing {b-hCG. Multiple types of lung tumors have been associated with production of β-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin. Production of β-hCG by these tumors has been associated with a poor prognosis. In this case, we find an aggressive form of solitary fibrous tumor associated with production of β-hCG and associated paraneoplastic syndrome secondary to the β-hCG. Further study is required to identify the frequency of this phenomenon and the implications of β-hCG production in the prognosis of the solitary fibrous tumors.

Abstract
The judicious use of immunostains can be of significant diagnostic assistance in the interpretation of testicular neoplasms when the light microscopic features are ambiguous. A limited differential diagnosis by traditional morphology is required for the effective use of immunohistochemistry (IHC); otherwise, the inevitable occurrence of exceptions to anticipated patterns will lead to "immunoconfusion." The diagnosis of tumors in the germ cell lineage, the great majority of primary tumors of the testis, has been considerably facilitated over the past decade by IHC directed at developmentally important nuclear transcription factors, including OCT4, SALL4, SOX2, and SOX17, that are mostly restricted to certain tumor histotypes. In conjunction with other markers, a specific diagnosis can be achieved in most instances through a panel of 3 or 4 immunostains and often fewer. IHC among tumors in the sex cord-stromal group may produce a significant proportion of false-negative cases until more sensitive and equally specific markers are validated. The negativity of these tumors for the IHC stains used for germ cell tumors is key in the important distinction of neoplasms in these 2 general categories. In this review, the International Society of Urological Pathologists (ISUP) provides diagnostic guidelines in the form of algorithms to assist practicing pathologists confronting a differential diagnostic question concerning a testicular neoplasm. The goal of ISUP is to anticipate commonly encountered differential diagnoses and recommend an efficient and limited pattern of IHC stains to resolve the question.

Abstract
Survival rates have plateaued at 70% for osteosarcoma. Proteins ectopically produced by malignant tumors may provide insight into new therapeutic targets. Osteosarcomas secreting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) have been suggested to have a worse prognosis. We examined the frequency of expression of β-subunit of hCG (β-hCG) in pretreatment osteosarcoma biopsies, and asked if it was associated with various clinical prognostic parameters, and the development of metastases. We subjected 51 pretreatment biopsies of high-grade osteosarcoma, from 51 patients, to β-hCG immunohistochemistry. In 19 of these patients, postchemotherapy metastatic biopsies also were examined for β-hCG expression. Clinical information (patient age, sex, survival status, and serum hCG in females only), and tumor characteristics (site, size, and presence of metastases) were recorded. The β-hCG positive and negative biopsies were separated and compared. Of 49 interpretable pretreatment biopsies, 28 (57%) showed positive cytoplasmic β-hCG expression: 27 with sparse positivity (1% of tumor cells) and 1 with frequent positivity (10% of tumor cells). The patient with frequent β-hCG positivity in her pretreatment biopsy had elevated serum hCG (88.2 mIU/mL) at diagnosis, decreasing to undetectable following chemotherapy and definitive resection. There was no difference in clinical parameters or rate of metastasis between β-hCG positive versus negative groups. Expression of β-hCG may be seen in high-grade osteosarcoma, but frequent β-hCG immunohistochemical expression by tumor cells, associated with clinically elevated serum β-hCG, is rare. Recognition that some nongerm cell tumors may produce β-hCG can prevent confusion with malignancies containing neoplastic syncytiotrophoblast cells, including germ cell and trophoblastic tumors.

Abstract
A Krukenberg tumor is a rare and potentially deadly cause of elevated serum β-hCG as part of a paraneoplastic syndrome. This study aims to describe the unusual case of a 36-year-old woman that presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with back pain and a positive urine pregnancy test. Assessment revealed no intrauterine pregnancy and a small left ovarian cyst. Further investigation showed moderately differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma with distant metastases to the spine. The patient died less than 3 months after her first presentation to the ED. Paraneoplastic syndrome, albeit rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of elevated β-hCG due to the high mortality associated with Krukenberg tumors.

Abstract
We report a rare case of metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer in a 43-year-old woman with a history of smoking. The tumor secreted human chorionic gonadotropin and its beta subunit (BetaHCG). The patient presented with amenorrhea, a positive pregnancy test and chest pain. A physical examination and investigations revealed no pregnancy, and it was determined that a paraneoplastic syndrome stemming from a pulmonary tumor was responsible for the secretion of BetaHCG. This secretion decreased with tumor response to chemotherapy. Only a few reports of paraneoplastic BetaHCG secretion can be found in the literature for several different cancers.

Abstract
We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with pulmonary adenocarcinoma and bone metastases who was diagnosed with paraneoplastic secretion of the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-HCG) while being screened for inclusion in a clinical trial. Immunohistochemistry analysis of a bone biopsy revealed strong staining of cancer cells with anti-beta HCG antibodies. Serial measurements of circulating Beta HCG seemed to be influenced by antineoplastic treatments, although they were not strictly associated with tumour evolution assessed by CT scans. Little is known about paraneoplastic secretion of beta HCG, although it has been found in 12% to 24% of non-small cell lung cancers. Usefulness of serial measurements of beta HCG for monitoring NSCLC has yet to be demonstrated, but its use as a criterion for inclusion in clinical trials needs to be questioned.

Abstract
β-Human chorionic gonadotropin (βhCG) assays are routinely used to test for pregnancy. However, βhCG may be elevated in conditions other than pregnancy. We describe a case of metastatic lung adenocarcinoma presenting with a pathologic femur fracture and a false-positive urine pregnancy test. Lung cancer is the most common nongestational malignancy that produces βhCG among reproductive-age women. Emergency physicians should consider this rare cause of a positive pregnancy test result in women who deny recent sexual intercourse, especially if the patient is older than 40 years, has a history of tobacco use, or presents with respiratory complaints.

Abstract
A 24-year-old patient with 7-week amenorrhoea consulted for vaginal bleeding without abdominal pain. Ultrasonography revealed a 7 × 4 cm solid right pelvic mass. There was no visible intrauterine gestational sac. The serum β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) level was 11 998 IU/l. Emergency laparoscopy was performed for a presumptive diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy. At laparoscopy, the right ovary was enlarged with a non-haemorrhagic 7 × 4 cm solid lesion, which was resected. The histological diagnosis was a dysgerminoma with immunohistochemistry showing nests of syncytiotrophoblastic cells, which were the origin of the hCG production. There was no pregnancy, either intrauterine or ectopic. There was no evidence of metastasis from the dysgerminoma on the positron-emission tomography scanner. The patient underwent a second procedure for surgical staging of this ovarian germ-cell tumour. This ovarian dysgerminoma was staged FIGO 1A, and the patient did not receive adjuvant therapy. There was no recurrence at the last 8-month follow-up.

Abstract
There are eight reported cases in the literature of osteosarcomas secreting β-hCG. Our primary aim was to investigate the rate of β-hCG expression in osteosarcoma and attempt to understand the characteristics of osteosarcomas that secrete β-hCG. We reviewed 37 histopathology slides (14 biopsies and 23 surgical specimens) from 32 patients with osteosarcoma. The slides were retrospectively stained for β-hCG expression. Patient and tumour characteristics, including age, gender, tumour location, subtype, proportion of necrosis, presence of metastases and recurrence were recorded. A total of five of the 32 tumours were found to be positive for β-hCG expression (one strongly and four weakly). This incidence of this expression was found in tumours with poor histological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The use of β-hCG expression as a diagnostic, prognostic or follow-up marker is questionable and needs further investigation with a larger sample size.

Abstract
Protein toxins confer a defense against predation/grazing or a superior pathogenic competence upon the producing organism. Such toxins have been perfected through evolution in poisonous animals/plants and pathogenic bacteria. Over the past five decades, a lot of effort has been invested in studying their mechanism of action, the way they contribute to pathogenicity and in the development of antidotes that neutralize their action. In parallel, many research groups turned to explore the pharmaceutical potential of such toxins when they are used to efficiently impair essential cellular processes and/or damage the integrity of their target cells. The following review summarizes major advances in the field of toxin based therapeutics and offers a comprehensive description of the mode of action of each applied toxin.

Abstract
Ovarian dysgerminoma is the most common germinal tumor in women; however, a lot of different symptoms can lead to its diagnosis. In the two cases reported here, misdiagnosis of ectopic pregnancy was first done because of inappropriate secretion of HCG by the tumor. These two cases point out the particularity of dysgerminoma with its various secretion capacity. Conversely, facing a raised level of HCG in non-gravidic situation, physicians have to consider different gynaecological and extragynaecological hypothesis.

Abstract
Pregnancy complicated by sarcoma is a rare event, and metastasis to the placenta is exceptionally rare. Of reported malignancies involving the products of conception, only 8% are sarcomas. We report the first case of placental metastasis of an epithelioid sarcoma, an uncommon malignancy which most frequently affects young adults. In addition to the typical histological features and immunophenotypic profile expected of epithelioid sarcoma, this tumor also expressed human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). Although uncharacteristic, the production of HCG has been previously reported in other nontrophoblastic tumors. It may have contributed to the pathogenesis of the tumor metastatic to the placenta in this case.
