Abstract
Fatigue and pain are the most common side effects impacting quality of life (QoL) in cancer survivors. Recent insights have shown that perceived injustice (PI) can play a substantial role in these side effects, but research on cancer survivors is scarce. Furthermore, guidelines for recognizing clinically relevant levels of PI in cancer survivors are missing. The aims of this study are to provide a clinically relevant cut-off for PI and to explore relationships between personal characteristics, symptoms, and QoL with PI. This multicenter, cross-sectional study uses the Injustice Experience Questionnaire (IEQ), Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), Patient-Specific Complaints (PSC), Multidimensional Fatigue Index (MFI), and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QoL Questionnaire-C30 (EORTC-QLQ-C30). A clinical cut-off for PI was identified based on the 75th percentile of IEQ scores. Univariate and multivariate regressions explored the relationship between PI and personal characteristics (sex, age, cancer type, treatment type), symptoms (pain intensity, fatigue), and QoL (daily activity complaints, cancer-related QoL). Cancer survivors (n = 121) were included, and a cut-off of 20 was identified. Significant indirect associations were found between chemotherapy, NPRS, PSC, MFI, and EORTC-QLQ-C30 with PI. In the multivariate model, only MFI (B = 0.205; 95% CI: 0.125-0.018) and age (B = 0.086; 95% CI: -0.191-0.285) maintained a significant association with PI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many advanced cancer patients struggle with anxiety, depressive symptoms, and anger toward God and illness-related stressors. Patients may perceive their illness as an injustice (i.e., appraise their illness as unfair, severe, and irreparable or blame others for their illness), which may be a risk factor for poor psychological and spiritual outcomes. This study examined relations between cancer-related perceived injustice and psycho-spiritual outcomes as well as potential mediators of these relationships. METHODS Advanced lung (n = 102) and prostate (n = 99) cancer patients completed a one-time survey. Using path analyses, we examined a parallel mediation model including the direct effects of perceived injustice on psycho-spiritual outcomes (i.e., anxiety, depressive symptoms, anger about cancer, anger towards God) and the indirect effects of perceived injustice on psycho-spiritual outcomes through two parallel mediators: meaning making and acceptance of cancer. We then explored whether these relations differed by cancer type. RESULTS Path analyses indicated that perceived injustice was directly and indirectly-through acceptance of cancer but not meaning making-associated with psycho-spiritual outcomes. Results did not differ between lung and prostate cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS Advanced cancer patients with greater perceived injustice are at higher risk for poor psycho-spiritual outcomes. Acceptance of cancer, but not meaning making, explained relationships between cancer-related perceived injustice and psycho-spiritual outcomes. Findings support testing acceptance-based interventions to address perceived injustice in advanced cancer patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Over the last decade, the use of online labor markets to collect data in health science has grown exponentially. However, self-identification remains the most common method for recruiting specific clinical sub-populations, and this may adversely affect data validity among respondents motivated to feign a condition for financial gain. METHODS Online respondents who professed taking medication for a specific medical condition (sample 1: diabetes: N = 307; sample 2: pain: N = 506) were asked to upload an image of their prescribed medication. These images were then evaluated to identify authentic and inauthentic responders based on the images submitted. Authentic and inauthentic respondent groups were then compared on a series of condition-specific health measures and attention checks. RESULTS In the diabetes sample, respondents whose photos were deemed inauthentic passed fewer attention checks and reported poorer physical (e.g., number of comorbidities) and mental health (e.g., diabetes distress) across a wide variety of measures (η2 = 0.014-0.159). Similarly in the pain sample, respondents whose photos were deemed inauthentic reported poorer physical (e.g., pain interference) and mental health (e.g., depression) across a wide variety of measures (η2 = 0.008-0.129). CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that there may be substantial exaggeration of adverse health among online survey respondents who feign health conditions such as diabetes and chronic pain. Hence, in the absence of procedures to verify health status claims, the validity of data from online survey respondents should be viewed with skepticism.
