Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupressure on nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Springer, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched for all randomized controlled trials (RCT) of treating nausea and vomiting during pregnancy by acupressure from the inception date of database to July 31st, 2023. Study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were conducted independently by researchers. The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated by the Cochrane Collaboration's bias risk assessment tool, meta-analysis by Stata 17.0 software, and publication bias by Begg's test. RESULTS A total of 11 RCTs involving 1378 pregnant women were included in this review, which was assessed to be moderate quality. 10 RCTs involving 1298 pregnant women were assessed for the meta-analysis. The results revealed that acupressure showed significant difference on improvement in symptom score compared with sham acupressure (pooled MD, - 1.33; 95%CI [- 2.06, - 0.61]; P < 0.001) or control group (pooled MD, - 0.73; 95%CI [- 1.08, - 0.39]; P < 0.001), and incidence of effective rate compared with sham acupressure group (pooled RR, 1.78; 95%CI [1.03, 3.07]; P = 0.039). However, no statistical significance was found between acupressure and control group (pooled RR, 4.53; 95%CI [0.67, 30.48]; P = 0.120) on effective rate. On comparing acupressure with sham acupressure, there was no beneficial effect on preventing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (pooled RR, 0.83; 95%CI [0.50, 1.38]; P = 0.476), shortening the duration of hospital stay (pooled MD, - 0.78; 95%CI [- 1.98, 0.41]; P = 0.199) and improving patient satisfaction (pooled RR, 1.36; 95%CI [0.47, 3.91]; P = 0.570). Begg's test did not reveal any publication bias. Only one RCT reported minimal acupressure-related adverse events. CONCLUSION Acupressure may have potential favorable or encouraging effect on treating nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, but strong supportive data are not yet available. Well-designed and large-scale RCTs should be conducted for assessing and confirming the efficacy and safety of acupressure in nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to assess the impact of nonpharmacological nursing interventions on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). DESIGN This is a systematic review. METHODS MEDLINE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Tübitak-ULAKBİM, and TRDizin databases were searched for the following search terms, including "Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting," "Nurse," "Nursing," and "Nonpharmacological Interventions" to identify nonpharmacological nursing interventions for PONV. A systematic review of English and Turkish articles published in the period between January 1, 2012 and June 1, 2023 was conducted. The PICOT-SD method was used to determine the compatibility of the pieces with the eligibility criteria. FINDINGS Fifty-eight of 3,874 articles obtained from databases fulfilled the eligibility criteria. This study demonstrated that acupuncture, aromatherapy, the oral intake of ginger, listening to music, education, and visits to patients decreased the incidence of nausea and vomiting and increased the quality of life. Additionally, it was found that patients' quality of life tended to improve along with reductions in postoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study support previous findings in the literature and demonstrate that nonpharmacological nursing interventions help reduce and prevent PONV. Based on our results, we suggest that nonpharmacological nursing interventions can be employed for the management of PONV in patients undergoing surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of nausea and vomiting following craniotomy is high, and pericardium 6 (P6; Neiguan) acupoint stimulation is an important strategy for treating postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Here, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) at P6 as an adjunct to antiemetic drugs to prevent PONV after craniotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS This randomized placebo-controlled trial enrolled 120 patients scheduled for craniotomy. The enrolled patients were randomly assigned to a TEAS or sham TEAS group. The incidence of PONV, pain score, and postoperative remedial treatment with antiemetics and analgesics at 0-2, 2-6, and 6-24 h after craniotomy were assessed. RESULTS The patient characteristics did not significantly differ between the two groups (P > 0.05). During 0-2 and 6-24 h after craniotomy, the incidence of vomiting was not significantly different between the two groups (P > 0.05). During 2-6 h, the incidence of vomiting was higher in the sham TEAS group than in the TEAS group (29.3 % vs. 14.0 %, P = 0.047). During 0-2 and 2-6 h, the pain scores did not differ significantly between the two groups (P > 0.05). During 6-24 h after craniotomy, the pain score was significantly higher in the sham TEAS group than in the TEAS group (P = 0.001). The degree of nausea and proportion of patients requiring antiemetic drugs were not significantly different between the two groups in each period (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION TEAS at P6 may reduce vomiting incidence and pain scores following craniotomy.

Abstract
Background Nausea and vomiting are two common symptoms in myocardial infarction patients. This study aims to determine the impact of p6 acupressure on nausea, vomiting, comfort, and the need for anti-vomiting drugs in myocardial infarction (MI) patients. Methods This research involved 90 patients with acute heart attacks experiencing persistent nausea despite taking anti-vomiting drugs. They were divided into three groups: acupressure, placebo, and control. The acupressure group wore a wristband with a button, the placebo group had a similar wristband without a button, and the control group received no wristband. Data on nausea severity, comfort, frequency of nausea, vomiting, and retching was collected before and after the intervention at different time points. The study also assessed the use of anti-vomiting drugs within 24 h of the intervention. Results The patients in the acupressure group, compared to those in the placebo and control groups, experienced significantly lower severity of nausea, frequency of vomiting, nausea, and retching and a substantially higher level of comfort level during the two, four, and 6 h after the start of the intervention (P < 0.05). However, no significant difference between the placebo and control groups was observed (P > 0.05). During the 24 h after the start of the intervention, administration of anti-vomiting drugs to the acupressure group was significantly less than that done in the placebo and control groups (P < 0.05). Conclusions The results illustrated that p6 acupressure reduces nausea, vomiting, and retching and increases the comfort level in myocardial infarction patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients undergoing craniotomy are at high risk for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) despite the use of prophylactic antiemetics. We hypothesized that a single preoperative oral dose of amisulpride as part of a multimodal antiemetic regimen would decrease the incidence of PONV in patients undergoing craniotomy for intracranial tumor surgery. METHODS Adult patients scheduled for elective craniotomy requiring general anesthesia were enrolled and randomized to receive either oral amisulpride 25 mg or placebo 2 hours before surgery in addition to our institution's usual antiemetic regimen. The primary outcome of the study was the incidence of nausea and/or vomiting during the first 24 hours postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included severity of nausea, use of rescue antiemetic medications, and treatment-related adverse events. RESULTS A total of 100 patients were included in the analysis. More patients in the amisulpride group had no episodes of nausea (90% vs. 40%; P<0.001) and no episodes of vomiting (94% vs. 46%; P<0.001) compared with the placebo group. The severity of nausea was lower in the amisulpride group than in the control group in the first 4 hours after surgery (P<0.05), and fewer patients receiving amisulpride required rescue antiemetics (P<0.001). The incidence of treatment-related adverse events was similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS A single preoperative oral dose of amisulpride 25 mg as a component of a multimodal antiemetic regimen decreased the incidence and severity of PONV in patients undergoing craniotomy for intracranial tumor surgery, with no adverse effects.

Abstract
One of the most common and distressing symptoms after craniotomy is postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). PONV could generate delayed postanesthesia care and hospitalization discharge, lower patient satisfaction, and an increase in overall hospitalization costs. The incidence of reported PONV after craniotomy is 22% to 70% without prophylaxis, and a multimodal regimen of medication has been recommended. We conducted a comprehensive literature review of the clinical evidence related to PONV prevention and management after craniotomy. All clinical trials in adult populations relevant to PONV after craniotomy available in English language and indexed in PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library databases from January 1997 up to September 2018 were retrieved using a combination of free-text words related to PONV in craniotomy. After screening manuscripts identified in the initial search, 23 clinical trials investigating systemic pharmacological intervention versus placebo or active control in patients undergoing craniotomy under general anesthesia met the criteria for inclusion in this comprehensive narrative review. The pathophysiology and mechanisms of PONV after craniotomy could be multifactorial in etiology. Therefore, based on current evidence, PONV management after craniotomy should focus on perioperative patient assessment, surgical, and anesthesia-related risk factors and the selection of systemic pharmacological considerations to reduce its incidence and complications. A multimodal regimen of medication targeting different chemoreceptors in the vomiting center is recommended. Ondansetron and dexamethasone, or their combination, are the most frequently used and effective agents. Further randomized clinical trials comparing different regimens that significantly reduce the incidence of PONV in craniotomy would provide relevant evidence-based data for PONV management in this patient population.

Interpretation of the four risk factors for postoperative nausea and vomiting in the Apfel simplified risk score: an analysis of published studies. Can J Anaesth 2021; 68:1057-1063. Abstract
PURPOSE The Apfel simplified risk score, developed in 1999, is the most widely used tool for risk stratification of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). It includes four risk factors: female sex, non-smoking status, history of PONV or motion sickness, and use of postoperative opioids. Nevertheless, there is considerable heterogeneity in the definition and application of these risk factors in PONV research. Our aim was to determine how these risk factors are implemented in studies employing the Apfel score. METHODS Citations of the index Apfel score paper between 1 September 1999 and 1 September 2019 were identified in the Scopus database. Original full-text reports in English measuring all four risk factors were eligible for inclusion. Data collected included the definition, timing, and collection method of the four risk factors. RESULTS Of the identified studies, 255 of the 535 reported all four risk factors, with calculated Apfel risk scores reported in 116 of the 255 (46%) papers. Smoking, PONV, motion sickness, and postoperative opioid use were defined in four (2%), zero (0%), one (0.4%), and seven (3%) papers, respectively. Postoperative opioid use was defined as "anticipated" in 138 (54%) studies and "actual" in 72 (18%) studies and was unclear in 45 (28%) studies. CONCLUSIONS Significant variation exists in how the Apfel risk factors are defined and applied in PONV research, particularly with respect to postoperative opioid use. More guidance in the application of this tool may optimize risk estimation and PONV prophylaxis, and potentially improve research quality.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nurses provide care at each phase of the complex, perioperative pathway and are well placed to identify areas of care requiring investigation in randomized controlled trials. Yet, currently, the scope of nurse-led randomized controlled trials conducted within the perioperative setting are unknown. This scoping review aims to identify areas of perioperative care in which nurse-led randomized controlled trials have been conducted, to identify issues impacting upon the quality of these trials and identify gaps for future investigation. METHODS This scoping review was conducted in reference to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, with a date range of 2014-19. Sources of unpublished literature included Open Grey, and ProQuest Dissertation and Theses, Clinical Trials.gov and the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry. After title and abstract checking, full-text retrieval and data extraction, studies were appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklists for randomized controlled trials. Data were synthesized according to the main objectives. Key information was tabulated. RESULTS From the 86 included studies, key areas where nurses have led randomized controlled trials include patient or caregiver anxiety; postoperative pain relief; surgical site infection prevention: patient and caregiver knowledge; perioperative hypothermia prevention; postoperative nausea and vomiting; in addition to other diverse outcomes. Issues impacting upon quality (including poorly reported randomization), and gaps for future investigation (including a focus on vulnerable populations), are evident. CONCLUSION Nurse-led randomized controlled trials in the perioperative setting have focused on key areas of perioperative care. Yet, opportunities exist for nurses to lead experimental research in other perioperative priority areas and within different populations that have been neglected, such as in the population of older adults undergoing surgery.

Abstract
AIMS To systemically review the efficacy and safety of auricular point therapy in patients with cancer-related fatigue. DESIGN A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. DATA SOURCES Eight electronic databases (PubMed, CENTRAL, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, China Biology Medicine, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and WanFang Data Knowledge Service Platform) were explored for randomized controlled trials from their inception to 1 December 2018. REVIEW METHODS The risk of bias assessment tool was adopted in accordance with Cochrane Handbook 5.3.0. All included studies reported the effects on cancer-related fatigue as the primary outcome. Effect size was estimated using relative risk, standardized mean difference or mean difference with a corresponding 95% confidence interval. Review Manager 5.3 was used for meta-analysis. RESULTS Six studies comprising 394 patients were included. The results of meta-analysis showed that auricular point therapy plus standard care produced more positive effects on cancer-related fatigue and quality of life than standard care alone. It could significantly improve the role, emotional, cognitive, and social functions of patients with cancer-related fatigue. CONCLUSIONS Auricular point therapy may be a safe therapy to relieve cancer-related fatigue and enhance the quality of life of patients with cancer. However, the evidence was inconclusive due to limitations on the quantity and quality of included studies. Rigorously designed randomized controlled trials should be conducted to verify the results. IMPACT Auricular point therapy is a simple and safe therapeutic approach that may alleviate cancer-related fatigue of common complications in patients with cancer and it is worth promoting in the community, family, and hospital. Moreover, the research findings can provide suggestions and inspiration for nurses and researchers to implement the proposal, which is conducive to design more rigorous and high-quality randomized controlled trials.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is among the most common adverse reactions following anaesthesia and surgery. Recent clinical studies have reported that the average incidence is about 30%, while in patients specifically undergoing neurosurgery, the incidence can be as great as 73%. Studies also suggest that its occurrence increases the risk of intracranial haematoma and haemorrhage. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of intradermal thumbtack needle buried Neiguan (pericardium 6 (P6)) point therapy in the prevention of PONV in patients undergoing craniotomy under general anaesthesia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is a single-centre, three-arm, randomised controlled trial. 180 participants are randomly assigned to either an acupuncture, intradermal thumbtack needle or control group in a 1:1:1 ratio. The P6 of the acupuncture group is punctured at both sides perpendicularly to a depth of 20 mm. Needles are retained for 30 min and stimulated every 10 min to maintain the de qi. The therapy includes two treatments; the acupuncture is administered immediately after and 24 hours after surgery. For the intradermal thumbtack needle group, the intradermal thumbtack needle is quickly inserted into the skin and embedded at P6 acupoints bilaterally. Patients and their families are asked to press the needlepoint with the onset of nausea, vomiting, bloating, pain and other reported discomforts. The needle is replaced after 24 hours. The therapy is administered immediately after and 24 hours after surgery. For the control group, no intervention is carried out. The incidence of PONV within 48 hours after craniotomy across the three groups is observed. Other observations include: (1) assessment of nausea score (severity of nausea) and pain score (visual analogue scale) 0-2, 2-6, 6-24 and 24-48 hours after craniotomy under general anaesthesia; (2) assessment of total rescue antiemetic dosage 0-48 hours after craniotomy under general anaesthesia; (3) length of hospital stay and (4) patient satisfaction score with PONV management. We will perform all statistical analysis following the intention-to-treat principle. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethics approval has been granted by the Bioethics Subcommittee of the West China Hospital, Sichuan University: the approval number is 2018 (number 231). Abstract
AIM To determine the effect of music on the severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting after the laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS This study was a randomized, controlled clinical study. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups (intervention group and control group). The numerical scale of nausea was used in rating the nausea complaints of the patients and the vomiting incidence assessment form in determining the incidence of vomiting. RESULTS There were statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the severity of nausea complaint (W = 110.826 p < 0.001). When compared to the control group, the vomiting incidence of the patients was statistically significantly lower in intervention group. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that listening to music decreased the severity nausea and the incidence of vomiting in the postoperative period.

Abstract
Objective Obstetric patients who receive combined spinal-epidural (CSE) anaesthesia for elective caesarean section (CS) frequently experience intraoperative nausea and vomiting (N&V). Prophylactic therapy with antiemetic agents can have multiple adverse effects to the mother and baby. We designed a randomised clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of electrical P6 stimulation for prophylactic N&V treatment for scheduled elective CS performed under CSE anaesthesia. Methods Following the Institutional Review Board approval and informed consent, a total of 180 patients were randomly allocated into three groups: (1) P6 stimulation (via a peripheral nerve stimulator), (2) intravenous (IV) antiemetics (metoclopramide and ondansetron), and (3) control (no IV antiemetic medications and no P6 stimulation), with 60 parturients in each group. Results Significantly fewer patients experienced intraoperative N&V in the P6 group (nausea 36.7% and vomiting 13.3%) and IV antiemetic group (nausea 23.3% and vomiting 16.7%) than those in the control group (nausea 73.3% and vomiting 45%; p<0.001). In addition, significantly fewer patients required rescue antiemetic medications in the P6 group (35%) and the IV antiemetic group (31.7%) than those in the control group (73.3%; p<0.001). There was no significant difference in the overall anaesthetic care satisfaction reported between the three study groups. Conclusion Our data suggest that P6 stimulation is as simple and as effective as our routine prophylactic IV antiemetic treatment for prevention of N&V during CS performed under CSE anaesthesia that could be of great interest to patients and obstetric anaesthesiologists who prefer treatments with fewer potential side effects.

Effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation on the Stress Response During Extubation After General Anesthesia in Elderly Patients Undergoing Elective Supratentorial Craniotomy: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial. Abstract
BACKGROUND Elderly patients have an increased risk of a stress response during extubation after general anesthesia. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) might decrease the stress response and improve the quality of recovery in elderly patients after elective supratentorial craniotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this prospective randomized controlled study, patients were randomly assigned to either a TEAS group (n=37) or a control group (n=38). The primary outcomes were the hemodynamic parameters and plasma concentrations of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol. The secondary outcome included the consumption of remifentanil and propofol, time to extubation and reorientation, extubation quality score, postoperative quality of recovery, and postoperative complications. RESULTS Compared with the control group, hemodynamic parameters and plasma concentrations of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol during extubation were decreased in the TEAS group. TEAS reduced the consumption of remifentanil (P<0.01), as well as incidence of postoperative complications. The extubation quality score was lower (P<0.01) and the quality of recovery score was higher (P<0.01) in the TEAS group than in the control group. However, the time to extubation and reorientation, and the consumption of propofol were not significantly different between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS TEAS may decrease the stress response during extubation, improve quality of postoperative recovery, and decrease incidence of postoperative complications in elderly patients undergoing elective supratentorial craniotomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nausea and vomiting are common postoperative complications that occur within the first 24 h in adults. Clinical practice guidelines and a Cochrane review recommend stimulating the P6 acupoint to prevent or reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting. However, there are currently no standards and optimal timing is not known. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of acupressure application on the P6 acupoint, using acupressure wristbands, in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting and the antiemetic drug requirement in patients who had high postoperative nausea and vomiting risk related to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. DESIGN This was a longitudinal, randomized controlled clinical study. SETTINGS The study was conducted in the general surgery department of a training and research hospital (105 beds), from March 2015 to March 2016. PARTICIPANTS A total of 111 female patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery were divided into three groups of 37, using a block randomization method. METHODS Training on acupressure wristband use was provided to the intervention group and an acupressure wristband with a plastic cap was placed at the P6 acupoint. A wristband with the same appearance as the acupressure wristband, but without a cap, was used in the placebo group. No intervention was used in the control group. The wristband was placed approximately one hour before the surgery and removed six hours after the surgery in both the intervention and placebo groups. The data were collected at the 2nd, 6th, and 24th postoperative hours. RESULTS The application of the acupressure wristband to the P6 acupoint in patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy was found to be more effective in decreasing the severity of nausea at the 2nd postoperative hour and the nausea incidence at 2-6 h, postoperatively, when compared to the placebo group (p < 0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the intervention group and the control group. Therefore, acupressure application to the P6 acupoint was not found to be clinically effective in decreasing postoperative vomiting, antiemetic drug requirement, and in decreasing pain, anxiety, or the need for analgesic drugs (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS We did not find the stimulation of the P6 acupoint with an acupressure wristband to be clinically effective in reducing postoperative nausea and vomiting or antiemetic drug requirement in patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES An enhancement of aerobic capacity has always been in the scope of various exercise programs. Apart from traditional, like endurance training, methods to improve aerobic performance, there is growing interest to alternative bodywork techniques, like massage, yoga, and acupuncture. This study aimed to investigate the acupressure effect on maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) in healthy young adult males. DESIGN Forty young healthy participants were randomly divided into intervention (n = 20) and control (n = 20) groups. The inferred VO2max level in groups was assessed by the 6-min Harvard step test twice: at baseline and after acupressure session. INTERVENTION Three-minute finger-tip point massage of Neiguan, Juque, and Xinshu acupoints covered by 1 cm2 sticky capsaicin-dressed heat plasters was applied in the intervention group, whereas in the control group, placebo acupressure was utilized. RESULTS The inferred VO2max in the intervention group increased from baseline 2.38 ± 0.48 L/min to 2.57 ± 0.6 L/min (p < 0.003), whereas inferred VO2max of the control group remained unchanged (2.46 ± 0.5 L/min at baseline and 2.47 ± 0.4 L/min after placebo acupressure, p > 0.9). CONCLUSIONS The results of the study demonstrated that finger-tip acupressure increases aerobic performance of young healthy males on more than 10%. Acupressure probably decreased anxiety level, which allowed better utilization of available energy sources.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The analysis of surgical processes should be a standard of health systems. We describe the circuit of care and postoperative treatment for neurosurgical interventions in the centres of our country. MATERIAL AND METHODS From June to October 2014, a survey dealing with perioperative treatments and postoperative circuits after neurosurgical procedures was sent to the chiefs of Anaesthesiology of 73 Spanish hospitals with neurosurgery and members of the Neuroscience Section of SEDAR. RESULTS We obtained 45 responses from 30 centres (41.09%). Sixty percent of anaesthesiologists perform preventive locoregional analgesic treatment. Pain intensity is systematically assessed by 78%. Paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and morphine combinations are the most commonly used. A percentage of 51.1 are aware of the incidence of postoperative nausea after craniotomy and 86.7% consider multimodal prophylaxis to be necessary. Dexamethasone is given as antiemetic (88.9%) and/or anti-oedema treatment (68.9%). A percentage of 44.4 of anaesthesiologists routinely administer anticonvulsive prophylaxis in patients with supratentorial tumours (levetiracetam, 88.9%), and 73.3% of anaesthesiologists have postoperative surveillance protocols. The anaesthesiologist (73.3%) decides the patient's destination, which is usually ICU (83.3%) or PACU (50%). Postoperative neurological monitoring varied according to the type of intervention, although strength and sensitivity were explored in between 70-80%. CONCLUSIONS There is great variability in the responses, probably attributable to the absence of guidelines, different structures and hospital equipment, type of surgery and qualified personnel. We need consensual protocols to standardize the treatment and the degree of monitoring needed during the postoperative period.

Abstract
Postoperative ileus is a common and often life-threatening gastrointestinal complication with few management methods available for patients. Integrating acupressure into perioperative care promises to bring benefits into preventing postoperative ileus. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of acupressure in identifying the signs and symptoms of postoperative ileus among patients undergoing abdominal surgery. The MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, China Journal Net and Wanfang databases were searched for high-quality RCTs using keywords such as acupressure, postoperative ileus, abdominal surgery, etc. A total of six studies ([Formula: see text]) were included in this review and meta-analysis. The quality of the literature was found to be uniformly moderate by the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) assessment tool. The results of meta-analyses revealed that acupressure could significantly reduce risks for postoperative nausea (OR 0.52, 95% CI 0.39–0.70, [Formula: see text]) and vomiting (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.39–0.75, [Formula: see text]) compared with the control group, without significant heterogeneity among studies. Meta-analysis of the need for antiemetic drugs suggested that the OR was 0.39 (95% CI 0.20–0.78, [Formula: see text]) with significant heterogeneity among studies. Our results suggested that acupressure might be effective in reducing the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting and the need for antiemetic drugs among patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Considering the substantial risk of bias in the articles included, future high-quality RCTs with a rigorous methodology are desirable to provide solid evidence. Furthermore, other signs and symptoms of postoperative ileus should be explored in future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after thyroidectomy is a common health problem in the recovery room. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the Nei-Guan (P6) acupressure wristband for PONV among patients undergoing thyroidectomy. METHODS Sixty Korean female participants were assigned to 1 of 3 groups (n = 20 each). The control group received usual care without the wristband. The placebo group received usual nursing care plus a wristband at the non-P6 site. The treatment group received usual care plus a wristband at the P6 acupoint 30 minutes before anesthesia; the wristband was removed before leaving the recovery room. Data were collected at 3 periods: in the recovery room and at 6 and 24 hours after surgery. RESULTS The nausea scores of the treatment group were significantly lower than the scores of the placebo or control groups in the recovery room (F = 6.229, P = .044). There were no significant differences in vomiting or retching among the groups. CONCLUSIONS The P6 stimulation with wristband suppressed nausea right after thyroidectomy in the recovery room but did not suppress subsequent vomiting or retching. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE The findings indicate that P6 acupressure has the short-term effect of relieving nausea but not vomiting and retching. Use of P6 wristband holds promise and suggests the need for further testing in a larger randomized clinical trial. Identifying other acupoints is recommended to achieve successful management of PONV.

Abstract
Since time immemorial, complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) have played a significant role in human health care. CAM is known to have a strong reputation and reliability within every culture to provide basic health care treatment for patients. CAM acts as a better therapeutic option in human being for treating various diseases and improving quality of life with apt consideration to the economic aspects. Acupressure, one of the known CAM, originated in ancient China is based on the principal of acupoints activation across the meridians which correct the imbalance between Qi. Activation of specific points on the meridians is known to facilitate reduction of pain at the local sites. It also reduces the pain from other body parts. This review outlines various types, devices and mechanisms involved in the acupressure treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common surgical complication that contributes to poor patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine if acupressure to the P6 pressure point during the immediate postoperative period decreased PONV for the first 24 postoperative hours. DESIGN This was a double-blind, randomized study. METHODS Experimental group participants wore a wristband, which administered acupressure to the P6 pressure point of one wrist. Control group wristbands were malpositioned. Bands remained on until patients were discharged from the postanesthesia care unit or up to a maximum of 2 hours. Data on nausea, vomiting, and antiemetic use were tracked for the first 24 postoperative hours. FINDING There were no statistically significant between-group differences in PONV or antiemetic use. CONCLUSIONS Short-term postoperative acupressure to one wrist did not lead to a 24-hour decrease in nausea, vomiting, or antiemetic use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are common complications following surgery and anaesthesia. Antiemetic drugs are only partially effective in preventing PONV. An alternative approach is to stimulate the PC6 acupoint on the wrist. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2004, updated in 2009 and now in 2015. OBJECTIVES To determine the effectiveness and safety of PC6 acupoint stimulation with or without antiemetic drug versus sham or antiemetic drug for the prevention of PONV in people undergoing surgery. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (Cochrane Library, Issue 12, 2014), MEDLINE (January 2008 to December 2014), EMBASE (January 2008 to December 2014), ISI Web of Science (January 2008 to December 2014), World Health Organization Clinical Trials Registry, ClinicalTrials.gov, and reference lists of articles to identify additional studies. We applied no language restrictions. SELECTION CRITERIA All randomized trials of techniques that stimulated the PC6 acupoint compared with sham treatment or drug therapy, or combined PC6 acupoint and drug therapy compared to drug therapy, for the prevention of PONV. Interventions used in these trials included acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation, transcutaneous nerve stimulation, laser stimulation, capsicum plaster, acu-stimulation device, and acupressure in people undergoing surgery. Primary outcomes were the incidences of nausea and vomiting after surgery. Secondary outcomes were the need for rescue antiemetic therapy and adverse effects. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias domains for each trial. We used a random-effects model and reported risk ratio (RR) with associated 95% confidence interval (95% CI). We used trial sequential analyses to help provide information on when we had reached firm evidence in cumulative meta-analyses of the primary outcomes, based on a 30% risk ratio reduction in PONV. MAIN RESULTS We included 59 trials involving 7667 participants. We rated two trials at low risk of bias in all domains (selection, attrition, reporting, blinding and other). We rated 25 trials at high risk in one or more risk-of-bias domains. Compared with sham treatment, PC6 acupoint stimulation significantly reduced the incidence of nausea (RR 0.68, 95% CI 0.60 to 0.77; 40 trials, 4742 participants), vomiting (RR 0.60, 95% CI 0.51 to 0.71; 45 trials, 5147 participants) and the need for rescue antiemetics (RR 0.64, 95% CI 0.55 to 0.73; 39 trials, 4622 participants). As heterogeneity among trials was substantial and there were study limitations, we rated the quality of evidence as low. Using trial sequential analysis, the required information size and boundary for benefit were reached for both primary outcomes.PC6 acupoint stimulation was compared with six different types of antiemetic drugs (metoclopramide, cyclizine, prochlorperazine, droperidol. ondansetron and dexamethasone). There was no difference between PC6 acupoint stimulation and antiemetic drugs in the incidence of nausea (RR 0.91, 95% CI 0.75 to 1.10; 14 trials, 1332 participants), vomiting (RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.74 to 1.17; 19 trials, 1708 participants), or the need for rescue antiemetics (RR 0.87, 95% CI 0.65 to 1.16; 9 trials, 895 participants). We rated the quality of evidence as moderate, due to the study limitations. Using trial sequential analyses, the futility boundary was crossed before the required information size was surpassed for both primary outcomes.Compared to antiemetic drugs, the combination of PC6 acupoint stimulation and antiemetic therapy reduced the incidence of vomiting (RR 0.56, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.91; 9 trials, 687 participants) but not nausea (RR 0.79, 95% CI 0.55 to 1.13; 8 trials, 642 participants). We rated the quality of evidence as very low, due to substantial heterogeneity among trials, study limitations and imprecision. Using trial sequential analysis, none of the boundaries for benefit, harm or futility were crossed for PONV. The need for rescue antiemetic was lower in the combination PC6 acupoint stimulation and antiemetic group than the antiemetic group (RR 0.61, 95% CI 0.44 to 0.86; 5 trials, 419 participants).The side effects associated with PC6 acupoint stimulation were minor, transient and self-limiting (e.g. skin irritation, blistering, redness and pain) in 14 trials. Publication bias was not apparent in the contour-enhanced funnel plots. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS There is low-quality evidence supporting the use of PC6 acupoint stimulation over sham. Compared to the last update in 2009, no further sham comparison trials are needed. We found that there is moderate-quality evidence showing no difference between PC6 acupoint stimulation and antiemetic drugs to prevent PONV. Further PC6 acupoint stimulation versus antiemetic trials are futile in showing a significant difference, which is a new finding in this update. There is inconclusive evidence supporting the use of a combined strategy of PC6 acupoint stimulation and antiemetic drug over drug prophylaxis, and further high-quality trials are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the commonly utilized sham acupressure procedures in existing acupressure trials, and to assess whether different types of sham interventions yield different therapeutic outcomes, and, as far as possible, to identify directions for the future development of an adequate sham acupressure method. METHODS Randomized controlled trials comparing true acupressure with sham interventions were included. Thirteen electronic databases were adopted to locate relevant studies from inception to July 3, 2014. Meanwhile, eight Chinese journals on complementary and alternative medicine were manually searched to locate eligible articles. In addition, eligible studies listed in the reference lists of the included papers and other related systematic reviews on acupressure were also screened to further search any potentially eligible trials. Methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the risk of bias assessment tool developed by the Cochrane Back Review Group. Descriptive analysis was adopted to summarize the therapeutic outcomes. RESULTS Sixty-six studies with 7265 participants were included. Methodological quality of the included trials was generally satisfactory. Six types of sham acupressure approaches were identified and "non-acupoint" stimulation was the most frequently utilized sham point while an acupressure device was the most commonly used approach for administering sham treatments. Acupressure therapy was a beneficial approach in managing a variety of health problems and the therapeutic effect was found to be more effective in the true acupressure groups than that in the sham comparative groups. No clear association could be identified between different sham acupressure modalities and the reported treatment outcomes. CONCLUSIONS A great diversity of sham acupressure controls have been used in clinical practice and research. A solid conclusion whether different sham alternatives are related to different treatment outcomes cannot be derived because of significant clinical heterogeneity among the analyzed trials. Non-acupoints are generally recommended but the definite locations should be identified with caution. For studies using single sham acupoints on hands or legs, it is suggested to apply identical acupressure devices on the same acupoint as in the active intervention without any stimulation. While for studies on pain, stimulation of sham acupoints should be avoided.

Abstract
Complementary and Integrative Medicine (CIM) encompasses many diverse therapies, including natural products and mind and body practices. Use of CIM is common and can benefit patients in palliative care. However, because patients in palliative care are often frail and elderly, the clinician should consider a patient's comorbidities before recommending certain therapies, such as natural products. In this article, specific examples of CIM are provided for symptoms commonly seen in palliative care.
