An "ethics of strangers"? On knowing the patient in clinical ethics

The shape and function of ethical imperatives may vary if the context is an interaction between strangers, or those who are well acquainted. This idea, taken up from Stephen Toulmin's distinction between an "ethics of strangers" and an "ethics of intimacy", can be applied to encounters in healthcare. There are situations where healthcare personnel (HCP) know their patients (corresponding to an "ethics of intimacy") and situations where HCP do not know their patients (corresponding to "an ethics of strangers"). Does it make a difference for normative imperatives that follow from central concepts and principles in medical ethics whether HCP know their patients or not? In our view, this question has not yet been answered satisfactorily. Once we have clarified what is meant by "knowing the patient", we will show that the distinction is particularly relevant with regard to some thorny questions of autonomy in healthcare (e.g., regarding advance directives or paternalism in the name of autonomy), whereas the differences with regard to imperatives following from the principles of justice and beneficence seem to be smaller. We provide a detailed argument for why knowing the patient is ethically valuable in encounters in healthcare. Consequently, healthcare systems should provide fertile ground for HCP to get to know their patients, and structures that foster therapeutic continuity. For this to succeed, a number of questions still need to be clarified, which is an important task for medical ethics.

Right-sizing Documentation: What the Pandemic Taught Us about Clinical Documentation and Quality of Care

Nursing documentation is essential to communicate patient care delivery. This review explores available evidence on the contribution of nursing documentation toward quality care delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nine articles were evaluated for at least one of the 6 factors of quality (eg, safe, timely, equitable, patient-centered, effective, and efficient). Analysis suggests that right-sizing documentation for optimal care quality requires continued efforts to reinforce the value and need of nursing documentation as a primary data source. Continued practice and research efforts are needed to reframe nursing documentation's essential role in benefiting a patient's current and future health care needs.

Evidence-Based Performance Indicators of Positive Inpatient Experiences

GOAL

Patient experiences affect the competitiveness and financial viability of a hospital. The purpose of this research was to ascertain the factors that contribute to positive inpatient experiences by using empirical evidence from national databases and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey data.

METHODS

Data were assembled from four publicly available U.S. government datasets. The HCAHPS national survey responses (n = 2,472) were based on four consecutive quarters of patient surveys. Measures of clinical complications obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services were used to assess hospital quality. Social determinants of health were incorporated into the analysis by including data from the Social Vulnerability Index as well as zip code-level information from the Office of Policy Development and Research.

PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

The study results show that hospital quietness, nurse communication, and care transition positively affected patient experience ratings and the patient's likelihood to recommend the hospital. In addition, findings show that hospital cleanliness positively influenced patient experience ratings. However, hospital cleanliness had little impact on the likelihood of a patient's recommending the hospital, and staff responsiveness had a negligible impact on both patient experience ratings and the likelihood to recommend the hospital. The results also revealed that hospitals with better clinical outcomes received better patient experience ratings and recommendation scores, whereas hospitals that serve more vulnerable populations received worse patient experience ratings and recommendation scores.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Findings from this research demonstrate that managing the physical surroundings by providing a clean and quiet environment, providing relationship-centered care through interactions with medical personnel, and working to engage patients in their health as they transition out of care contributed to positive inpatient experiences.

Investigating the impact of cognitive bias in nursing documentation on decision-making and judgement

The clinical documentation of patients' mental status, behaviour and functioning is a fundamental aspect of inpatient mental health care. It is an important source of information-sharing with the interprofessional team and used by other clinicians within the circle of care to guide their decision-making process. Given the body of evidence highlighting concerns about the quality of nursing documentation and the growing literature demonstrating the presence of bias in healthcare, it is critically important that we examine the impact of this bias in nursing practice. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether clinical decisions and judgements change when nurses read documentation that is either biased or neutral. Using a quantitative, observational study that used surveys to collect data, participants were exposed to two patient vignettes and six clinical notes associated with each patient (notes were written with either biased or neutral language) and asked to make clinical decisions and judgements. Results from 199 nurse participants from a tertiary mental health hospital revealed a notable relationship between the type of notes read (biased vs. neutral) and clinical practice, namely, participants reading biased notes were less likely to offer health teaching when administering pro re nata (PRN) medication for sleep. We also found differences in decision-making and judgements based on the type of note read depending on years of experience and type of education. The results indicate that biased language in nursing documentation can influence other clinicians' decisions and judgements about patients, thereby indicating a cascade of bias.

Experience of the patient's success in facing post-stroke urinary incontinence: the patient's perspective

Objective

Post-stroke urinary incontinence (UI) is one of the sequelae of stroke. This situation affects all aspects of the patient's life – physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. This study aimed to investigate the experience of patients’ success in facing a post-stroke UI.

Methods

A qualitative study using the Rapid Assessment Procedure (RAP) approach was used in this study. Informants were selected using purposive sampling. In-depth interviews with as many as 8 patients who had recovered from post-stroke UI and living in the greater area of Southeast Sulawesi (Indonesia) were conducted. In-depth interviews were also conducted with 8 caregivers and 2 nurses. Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach and interpretation of data was based on Humanbecoming theory and Self-care deficit theory of nursing.

Results

Five successful things the patients experienced during post-stroke UI were identified. The five successes were as follows: they provided information to get to know and understand post-stroke UI, followed the procedures to overcome post-stroke UI, conducted self-control exercises and stayed motivated, performed daily activities independently according to ability, and made use of family support and peers’ attention.

Conclusions

These findings indicated that persistence, belief, independence, and social support (family and peer) made patients to successfully face their post-stroke UI and improved their quality of life. These findings also became the basis for developing a post-stroke UI management model based on Humanbecoming theory and Self-care deficit theory of nursing.

Overview of Facebook Use by Hospitals in Italy: A Nationwide Survey during the COVID-19 Emergency

Background: Facebook is the most popular social network across the world and also allows users access to health information. Our study presents an overview of the official Facebook profiles of hospitals in Italy (n = 1351) and how much they are used. Methods: All hospitals were surveyed on the number of Facebook posts in May (post-lockdown) and October (second pandemic wave) 2020. The number of followers, the creation date of the official page, and the frequency of publication—that is, the average number of days between two subsequent posts—were determined. Results: In Italy, only 28% (n = 379) of the hospitals had official Facebook pages, of which 20.6% (n = 78) were public hospitals, and 79.4% (n = 301) were private hospitals. Of the hospitals with Facebook pages, 49.1% used them every week, and public hospitals published more often. Conclusions: Despite the differences between regions and types of management, the number of hospitals in Italy that use Facebook as a tool for the public dissemination of health information is still low. Hospitals should adopt an effective communication strategy using social networks to improve the quality of health care.

A Qualitative Review of What Forensic Mental Health Nurses Include in Their Documentation

BACKGROUND

Documentation of mental health care is a critical component of nursing practice. Despite being identified as playing a critical role, researchers continue to question the quality of nursing documentation and missing and/or inaccurate information.

PURPOSE

Our aim is to explore the content of nursing documentation among mental health nurses providing care to forensic inpatients.

METHODS

Using a constructed semi-grounded emergent theme approach for data analysis, we reviewed the types of activities, subjects, and interactions described within nursing notes and identified themes of the content.

RESULTS

Our results demonstrate that nursing documentation could be categorized into one of seven themes: interactions, food, activities, sleep, mental health, physical health and hygiene. These areas were not consistent with the recommendations from nursing bodies in Canada, specifically the areas of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Furthermore, missing in the nursing notes is context.

CONCLUSIONS

The discussion highlights the importance of nursing documentation within the context of best practice, bias, and the impact on patient care. We also discuss missing information (context, clinical relevance, and case conceptualization), and suggest that nurses are not injecting this expertise in patient notes. Clinical implications for documentation practices are presented in relation to education and reflective practice.

Intraprofessional collaboration between enrolled and registered nurses in the care of clinically deteriorating ward patients: A qualitative study

BACKGROUND

Nurses' role in vital signs monitoring places them in an ideal position to recognise and respond to clinical deterioration in general wards. However, enrolled nurses (ENs) and registered nurses (RNs) do not always work collaboratively, and this can lead to delays in recognition and escalation of clinical deterioration in general wards.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the study was to explore the collaboration experiences between ENs and RNs in recognising and responding to clinical deterioration in general ward settings.

METHODS

A qualitative descriptive study involving 12 ENs and 11 RNs was conducted in a 1250-bed tertiary hospital in Singapore using semistructured interviews. Interviews were transcribed and thematically analysed.

FINDINGS

Three main themes emerged from the data analysis. The first, "reaching a collective understanding of patients' conditions', identifies nursing shift handover as the primary method of obtaining patient information essential for ENs and RNs to work collaboratively to deliver safe patient care. However, the dissociation of ENs during the handover process created information gaps on patients at risk of clinical deterioration. The second, "role expectations of each other", describes expectations that both groups of nurses had for each other's functions and responsibilities and the importance of mutual support in the nursing teamwork process. The third, "lacking in shared decision-making", depicts a top-down approach in decision-making, wherein ENs were often not engaged in the decision-making process related to patient care.

CONCLUSIONS

A less-than-optimal collaborative EN-RN relationship was observed in this study, which sometimes caused delays in recognising and responding to deteriorating ward patients. This study illuminates the need for intraprofessional learning opportunities in prelicensure nursing programmes and the workplace to foster effective EN-RN collaborative practice. Nurse managers and educators are instrumental in fostering EN-RN collaboration and providing ongoing education on nursing teamwork skills and competencies.

Impact of Patient Load on the Quality of Electronic Medical Record Documentation

OBJECTIVE

American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) recommends ongoing care of 10 patients per resident however its implication is unclear. We hypothesized EMR quality to vary based on patient load and call status.

METHODS

We conducted a double-blind, single-center, retrospective observational study between 2017 and 2019 to investigate the quality and accuracy of resident documentation using the Responsible Electronic Documentation (RED) Checklist, a validated scoring system.

RESULTS

A total of 234 independent charts were analyzed and 80 met scoring criteria. Average patients per residents was 4, 9.1, 7.2, and 5.5 on "call" day (D0), "post-call" day (D1), "mid-call" day (D2), and "pre-call" day (D3), respectively. Mean RED checklist scores were 68.1%, 57%, 68.6%, and 72.1% on the above call status. The difference in score between D3 and D1 was statistically significant (P = .00042). There was a negative correlation between score and number of patients per resident (r = -0.286, P = .010).

CONCLUSION

EMR documentation quality is directly impacted by patient load and resident call status with the lowest documentation quality on post-call day, correlating with patient load.

Exploring the perspectives of outpatient rehabilitation clinicians on the challenges with monitoring patient health, function and activity in the community

PURPOSE

Rehabilitation clinicians need information about patient activities in the home/community to inform care. Despite active efforts to develop technologies that can meet this need, clinicians' perspectives regarding how information is collected and used in outpatient rehabilitation have not been comprehensively described. Therefore, we aimed to describe: (1) what data pertaining to a patient's health, function and activity in their home/community are currently collected in outpatient rehabilitation, (2) how these data can impact clinical decisions, and (3) what challenges clinicians encounter when they manage the care of outpatients based on this information.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eight clinicians working in outpatient rehabilitation programs completed qualitative interviews that were analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Four themes were identified: "Nature of data about a patient's health, function and activity in the home/community and how it is collected by clinicians," "Value of data from the home/community," "Perceived drawbacks of current data collection methods," and "Improving data collection to understand patient trajectory."

CONCLUSIONS

Clinicians described the importance of understanding patient activities in the home/community, but perspectives varied regarding the suitability of current methods. These perceptions may inform the design of solutions to bridge the gap between the clinic and the community in outpatient rehabilitation.Implications for rehabilitationClinical decision-making in outpatient rehabilitation is guided by verbal and written reports about a patient's health and function in the community and adherence to treatment plans.Differing perceptions on the suitability of current data collection methods indicate that the development of new solutions, such as rehabilitation technologies, needs to carefully consider clinician workflows and what data are perceived as meaningful.Potentially impactful directions for new solutions include providing well validated data on adherence, movement quality, or longitudinal progression, presented in formats that match clinical decision criteria.

How forensic mental health nurses' perspectives of their patients can bias healthcare: A qualitative review of nursing documentation

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Our aim was to examine the notes produced by nurses, paying specific attention to the style in which these notes are written and observing whether there are concerns of distortions and biases.

BACKGROUND

Clinicians are responsible to document and record accurately. However, nurses' attitudes towards their patients can influence the quality of care they provide their patients and this inevitably impacts their perceptions and judgments, with implications to patients' care, treatment, and recovery. Negative attitudes or bias can cascade to other care providers and professionals.

DESIGN

This study used a retrospective chart review design and qualitative exploration of documentation using an emergent theme analysis.

METHODS

We examined the notes taken by 55 mental health nurses working with inpatients in the forensic services department at a psychiatric hospital. The study complies with the SRQR Checklist (Appendix S1) published in 2014.

RESULTS

The results highlight some evidence of nurses' empathic responses to patients, but suggest that most nurses have a style of writing that much of the time includes themes that are negative in nature to discount, pathologise, or paternalise their patients.

CONCLUSIONS

When reviewing the documentation of nurses in this study, it is easy to see how they can influence and bias the perspective of other staff. Such bias cascade and bias snowball have been shown in many domains, and in the context of nursing it can bias the type of care provided, the assessments made and the decisions formed by other professionals.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Given the critical role documentation plays in healthcare, our results indicate that efforts to improve documentation made by mental health nurses are needed and specifically, attention needs to be given to the writing styles of the notation.

"Looking for Deviations": Nurses' Observations of Older Patients With COPD in Home Nursing Care

Nurses working in home care play a significant role in observing and identifying changes in the health status of patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of this study was to explore and describe nurses' observations of older patients with COPD when providing home nursing care. In this qualitative explorative study, data were collected through observations of 17 home care visits using the think-aloud technique, followed up with individual interviews with the nurses. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings showed that the nurses' observations (focus, methods, and interpretation) were characterized by their search for deviations from what they judged to be the patient's habitual state. The nurses did not use any tool or guidelines, nor did they follow a standard procedure. Instead, when observing and interpreting, they performed a complex process guided by their experience and knowledge of the patient, and the patient's individual and contextual circumstances. This knowledge contributes to warranted reflection on nurses' practice in this context to secure COPD patients' safety and quality of life.

Ways of strategies to knowing the patient described by nursing students

Knowing the patient has been identified in research as important in nursing practice. It's a central phenomenon used by nurses in decision-making to provide good and safe qualitative individualized care. The aim of this study was to describe what strategies nursing students' use to 'know the patient'. Interviews with ten nursing students were analysed using a qualitative content analysis. Four themes emerge: Prepare oneself before the first meeting; Creating relationship; Dare to be open and near; Doing the best for the patient, with a main theme: To engage with and care for the unique person. The results show that the nursing students prepare themselves by reading journals, asking staff members for information and research current diseases and medications before the first meeting with the patient. They also think through how to behave and to be present in the encounter and to create a good relationship with the patient which can only be done by spending time together. They are open-minded while listening to the patient to get to know the unique person behind the façade of the patient. This study indicates that knowing the patient is important to nursing students, or else they cannot provide good quality of care for the patients nor be satisfied in their work as nurses. The students also emphasize that if they are not able to get to know the patient, it's better for someone else to take over the responsibility of care for the patient.

Empowering Patients during Hospitalization: Perspectives on Inpatient Portal Use

BACKGROUND

Patients have demonstrated an eagerness to use portals to access their health information and connect with care providers. While outpatient portals have been extensively studied, there is a recognized need for research that examines inpatient portals.

OBJECTIVE

We conducted this study to improve our understanding about the role of a portal in the context of inpatient care. Our study focused on a large sample of the general adult inpatient population and obtained perspectives from both patients and care team members about inpatient portal use.

METHODS

We interviewed patients (n = 120) who used an inpatient portal during their hospitalization at 15 days or 6 months after discharge to learn about their portal use. We also interviewed care team members (n = 331) 4 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months after inpatient portal implementation to collect information about their ongoing perspectives about patients' use of the portal.

RESULTS

The perspectives of patients and care team members generally converged on their views of the inpatient portal. Three features-(1) ordering meals, (2) looking up health information, and (3) viewing the care team-were most commonly used; the secure messaging feature was less commonly used and of some concern to care team members. The inpatient portal benefited patients in four main ways: (1) promoted independence, (2) reduced anxiety, (3) informed families, and (4) increased empowerment.

CONCLUSION

Inpatient portals are recognized as a tool that can enhance the delivery of patient-centered care. In addition to empowering patients by increasing their sense of control, inpatient portals can support family members and caregivers throughout the hospital stay. Given the consistency of perspectives about portal use across patients and care team members, our findings suggest that inpatient portals may facilitate shifts in organizational culture that increase the patient centeredness of care and improve patient experience in the hospital context.

Understanding Secure Messaging in the Inpatient Environment: A New Avenue for Communication and Patient Engagement

BACKGROUND

Patient portals, and the secure messaging feature in particular, have been studied in the outpatient setting, but research in the inpatient setting is relatively less mature.

OBJECTIVE

To understand the topics discussed in secure messaging in the inpatient environment, we analyzed and categorized messages sent within an inpatient portal.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This observational study examined the content of all secure messages sent from December 2013 to June 2017 within an inpatient portal at a large Midwestern academic medical center (AMC). We analyzed a total of 2,598 messages, categorizing them by sender (patient, family, or care team member), type, and topic, and conducted a descriptive analysis of categories and an examination of code co-occurrence.

RESULTS

Patients were the most frequent message senders (63%); family members sent the fewest messages (10%). We identified five types of messages: Alert/Request; Thanks; Response; Question; and Other (typo/test message). Patient messages included Alerts/Requests (38%), Questions (31%), Statements of Thanks (24%), Response (1.2%), and Other (5%). We also identified 14 nonmutually exclusive message topics: Medication; Procedure/Treatment Plan; Schedule; Pain; Results; Diet; Discharge; Non-Medication Questions; Provider Requests; Symptoms; Custodial; Technical Issues; Potential Error; and Contact Information. Patient message topics most commonly discussed Symptoms (18%), Procedure/Treatment Plan (14%), or Pain (12%).

CONCLUSION

Our analysis of secure message content suggests certain message types and topics such as Alerts/Requests and Questions about symptoms and treatment plans are particularly important to patients. These findings demonstrate that both patients and family members utilize the secure messaging function to engage in the care process by posing questions, making requests, and alerting staff to problems. As this technology is implemented in additional facilities, future work should examine how use of secure messaging may be influenced by factors including patients' demographics, reasons for hospitalization, and length of stay.

Ways of Knowing and Caring Used by Nurses in Community Hospice Agencies

Providing nursing care for an individual who is terminally ill is a complex endeavor. Understanding the different ways nurses who work in hospice agencies use knowing about and caring for persons receiving services becomes important because the actions of nurses are influenced by the nurses' perceptions. Hearing the narrative of nurses providing end-of-life care through phenomenological research can inform nursing education and institutions' methods to support the development of skills and characteristics to improve palliative and end-of-life nursing care. The purpose of this research was to question nurses who work in hospice agencies concerning their lived experiences related to knowing about and caring for individuals who were receiving hospice services. Four themes were identified related to the concepts of knowing and caring. These are difficult-to-measure concepts but add value to the profession and document how nurses contribute to patient care. In addition, the concepts are meaningful to patients and families receiving hospice services. The research provided a method of making the work of these nurses visible and gave more knowledge about nurses who provide end-of-life care.

Acute care patient portals: a qualitative study of stakeholder perspectives on current practices

Objective

To describe current practices and stakeholder perspectives of patient portals in the acute care setting. We aimed to: (1) identify key features, (2) recognize challenges, (3) understand current practices for design, configuration, and use, and (4) propose new directions for investigation and innovation.

Materials and Methods

Mixed methods including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and site visits with stakeholders at leading academic medical centers. Thematic analyses to inform development of an explanatory model and recommendations.

Results

Site surveys were administered to 5 institutions. Thirty interviews/focus groups were conducted at 4 site visits that included a total of 84 participants. Ten themes regarding content and functionality, engagement and culture, and access and security were identified, from which an explanatory model of current practices was developed. Key features included clinical data, messaging, glossary, patient education, patient personalization and family engagement tools, and tiered displays. Four actionable recommendations were identified by group consensus.

Discussion

Design, development, and implementation of acute care patient portals should consider: (1) providing a single integrated experience across care settings, (2) humanizing the patient-clinician relationship via personalization tools, (3) providing equitable access, and (4) creating a clear organizational mission and strategy to achieve outcomes of interest.

Conclusion

Portals should provide a single integrated experience across the inpatient and ambulatory settings. Core functionality includes tools that facilitate communication, personalize the patient, and deliver education to advance safe, coordinated, and dignified patient-centered care. Our findings can be used to inform a "road map" for future work related to acute care patient portals.

The Hidden Lives of Nurses' Cognitive Artifacts

BACKGROUND

Standardizing nursing handoffs at shift change is recommended to improve communication, with electronic tools as the primary approach. However, nurses continue to rely on personally created paper-based cognitive artifacts - their "paper brains" - to support handoffs, indicating a deficiency in available electronic versions.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this qualitative study was to develop a deep understanding of nurses' paper-based cognitive artifacts in the context of a cancer specialty hospital.

METHODS

After completing 73 hours of hospital unit field observations, 13 medical oncology nurses were purposively sampled, shadowed for a single shift and interviewed using a semi-structured technique. An interpretive descriptive study design guided analysis of the data corpus of field notes, transcribed interviews, images of nurses' paper-based cognitive artifacts, and analytic memos.

RESULTS

Findings suggest nurses' paper brains are personal, dynamic, living objects that undergo a life cycle during each shift and evolve over the course of a nurse's career. The life cycle has four phases: Creation, Application, Reproduction, and Destruction. Evolution in a nurse's individually styled, paper brain is triggered by a change in the nurse's environment that reshapes cognitive needs. If a paper brain no longer provides cognitive support in the new environment, it is modified into (adapted) or abandoned (made extinct) for a different format that will provide the necessary support.

CONCLUSIONS

The "hidden lives" - the life cycle and evolution - of paper brains have implications for the design of successful electronic tools to support nursing practice, including handoff. Nurses' paper brains provide cognitive support beyond the context of handoff. Information retrieval during handoff is undoubtedly an important function of nurses' paper brains, but tools designed to standardize handoff communication without accounting for cognitive needs during all phases of the paper brain life cycle or the ability to evolve with changes to those cognitive needs will be underutilized.

Electronic Documentation and Nurse-Patient Interaction

This author explored the culture of nurse-patient interactions associated with electronic bedside documentation. Data were collected through passive participant observation, audiotaping of nurse-patient interactions, and interviews with nurses. Nurses acknowledged that they need to share their attention between the patient and the computer. They stated that prioritizing patients' needs while completing the required electronic documentation was demanding. Stationary computers challenged the logistics of the exchange. Understanding the adaptation of caregiving necessitated by bedside electronic documentation will have a positive impact on developing systems that interface seamlessly with nurses' workflow and encourage patients' active participation in their care.

The Symbolic Functions of Nurses' Cognitive Artifacts on a Medical Oncology Unit

Acute care nurses continue to rely on personally created paper-based tools-their "paper brains"-to support work during a shift, although standardized handoff tools are recommended. This interpretive descriptive study examines the functions these paper brains serve beyond handoff in the medical oncology unit at a cancer specialty hospital. Thirteen medical oncology nurses were each shadowed for a single shift and interviewed afterward using a semistructured technique. Field notes, transcribed interviews, images of nurses' paper brains, and analytic memos were inductively coded, and analysis revealed paper brains are symbols of patient and nurse identity. Caution is necessary when attempting to standardize nurses' paper brains as nurses may be resistant to such changes due to their pride in constructing personal artifacts to support themselves and their patients.

Research in nursing informatics 2014

This article reflects the work done in the third year of the Nursing Informatics Year in Review project. This project seeks to search and analyze articles written by nurses as first author on the subject of nursing informatics, published August 2013-August 2014. Each year we also seek recommended articles from our American Medical Informatics Association-Nursing Informatics Work Group (AMIA-NIWG) members that meet the same criteria as the search and most influenced their thinking and scholarship. Twenty-seven articles emerged from the literature review, and our AMIA-NIWG members recommended 32 articles. We analyzed the articles by journal of publication, country of first author, source of funding, research method, research setting, and area of focus. The purpose of this article was to present the results of this project for 2014.
