Spinal deformities in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy: a retrospective qualitative, quantitative, genotypical, and familial analysis of 175 patients

Use of transcranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEPs) in spine deformity surgery in a case of Charcot-Marie-tooth disease-what we should know? A case report

INTRODUCTION

Charcot Marie tooth disease (CMTD) is also known as Hereditary sensory motor neuropathy. It poses difficulties in attaining intra-operative neuromonitoring signals for deformity correction surgery. In this case report, we intent to mention key points for obtaining good neuromonitoring signals in these cases which increases the safety in scoliosis surgery.

CASE PRESENTATION

We present a 14-year-old boy, known case of CMTD, presented with progressive deformity of the back. The child was wheelchair-bound and could walk only a few steps with support. He was unable to maintain a sitting balance without using upper limbs making him functionally quadriparatic. The radiographs showed a double scoliotic curve with costo-pelvic impingement. At the onset, no signals were obtained with routine intra-operative neuromonitoring settings.

DISCUSSION

Increasing the sweep length and voltage in our neuro-monitors helped in acquiring the baseline signals and we went ahead to proceed the deformity correction.

Myelin protein zero mutation-related hereditary neuropathies: Neuropathological insight from a new nerve biopsy cohort

Myelin protein zero (MPZ/P0) is a major structural protein of peripheral nerve myelin. Disease-associated variants in the MPZ gene cause a wide phenotypic spectrum of inherited peripheral neuropathies. Previous nerve biopsy studies showed evidence for subtype-specific morphological features. Here, we aimed at enhancing the understanding of these subtype-specific features and pathophysiological aspects of MPZ neuropathies. We examined archival material from two Central European centers and systematically determined genetic, clinical, and neuropathological features of 21 patients with MPZ mutations compared to 16 controls. Cases were grouped based on nerve conduction data into congenital hypomyelinating neuropathy (CHN; n = 2), demyelinating Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT type 1; n = 11), intermediate (CMTi; n = 3), and axonal CMT (type 2; n = 5). Six cases had combined muscle and nerve biopsies and one underwent autopsy. We detected four MPZ gene variants not previously described in patients with neuropathy. Light and electron microscopy of nerve biopsies confirmed fewer myelinated fibers, more onion bulbs and reduced regeneration in demyelinating CMT1 compared to CMT2/CMTi. In addition, we observed significantly more denervated Schwann cells, more collagen pockets, fewer unmyelinated axons per Schwann cell unit and a higher density of Schwann cell nuclei in CMT1 compared to CMT2/CMTi. CHN was characterized by basal lamina onion bulb formation, a further increase in Schwann cell density and hypomyelination. Most late onset axonal neuropathy patients showed microangiopathy. In the autopsy case, we observed prominent neuromatous hyperinnervation of the spinal meninges. In four of the six muscle biopsies, we found marked structural mitochondrial abnormalities. These results show that MPZ alterations not only affect myelinated nerve fibers, leading to either primarily demyelinating or axonal changes, but also affect non-myelinated nerve fibers. The autopsy case offers insight into spinal nerve root pathology in MPZ neuropathy. Finally, our data suggest a peculiar association of MPZ mutations with mitochondrial alterations in muscle.

Evaluation of Pathogenicity and Causativity of Variants in the MPZ and SH3TC2 Genes in a Family Case of Hereditary Peripheral Neuropathy

The implementation of NGS methods into clinical practice allowed researchers effectively to establish the molecular cause of a disorder in cases of a genetically heterogeneous pathology. In cases of several potentially causative variants, we need additional analysis that can help in choosing a proper causative variant. In the current study, we described a family case of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) type 1 (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease). DNA analysis revealed two variants in the SH3TC2 gene (c.279G>A and c.1177+5G>A), as well as a previously described variant c.449-9C>T in the MPZ gene, in a heterozygous state. This family segregation study was incomplete because of the proband's father's unavailability. To evaluate the variants' pathogenicity, minigene splicing assay was carried out. This study showed no effect of the MPZ variant on splicing, but the c.1177+5G>A variant in the SH3TC2 gene leads to the retention of 122 nucleotides from intron 10 in the RNA sequence, causing a frameshift and an occurrence of a premature stop codon (NP_078853.2:p.Ala393GlyfsTer2).

Treatment of Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathies

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) is a heterogeneous group of inherited neuropathies that affect the peripheral nerves and slowly cause progressive disability. Currently, there is no effective therapy. Patients' management is based on rehabilitation and occupational therapy, fatigue, and pain treatment with regular follow-up according to the severity of the disease. In the last three decades, much progress has been made to identify mutations involved in the different types of CMT, decipher the pathophysiology of the disease, and identify key genes and pathways that could be targeted to propose new therapeutic strategies. Genetic therapy is one of the fields of interest to silence genes such as PMP22 in CMT1A or to express GJB1 in CMT1X. Among the most promising molecules, inhibitors of the NRG-1 axis and modulators of UPR or the HDACs enzyme family could be used in different types of CMT.

Hereditary neuropathy

The hereditary neuropathies, collectively referred as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) and related disorders, are heterogeneous genetic peripheral nerve disorders that collectively comprise the commonest inherited neurological disease with an estimated prevalence of 1:2500 individuals. The field of hereditary neuropathies has made significant progress in recent years with respect to both gene discovery and treatment as a result of next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach. These investigations which have identified over 100 causative genes and new mutations have made the classification of CMT even more challenging. Despite so many different mutated genes, the majority of CMT forms share a similar clinical phenotype, and due to this phenotypic homogeneity, genetic testing in CMT is increasingly being performed through the use of NGS panels. The majority of patients still have a mutation in one the four most common genes (PMP22 duplication-CMT1A, MPZ-CMT1B, GJB1-CMTX1, and MFN2-CMT2A). This chapter focuses primarily on these four forms and their potential therapeutic approaches.

Use of transcranial motor-evoked potentials to provide reliable intraoperative neuromonitoring for the Charcot-Marie-Tooth population undergoing spine deformity surgery

PURPOSE

Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) has historically been difficult to obtain in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. Transcranial motor-evoked potentials (TcMEPs) have been found to be safe and effective for other spinal deformity patients. Our objective was to determine the effectiveness of TcMEP monitoring in patients with CMT.

METHODS

An IRB-approved, retrospective review of CMT patients undergoing spinal deformity surgery assessing TcMEP, somatosensory-evoked potential (SSEP), and neurogenic motor evoked potential (NMEP) IONM was performed. A 2:1 matched cohort control group of idiopathic spinal deformity patients was used. A waveform grading system was applied to review baseline TcMEP reliability and quality, which was validated via intraclass correlation coefficient amongst five raters.

RESULTS

Twenty-three CMT patients (26 surgical cases) were identified. The use of TcMEP improved the ability to obtain baseline IONM when compared to SSEP (83% vs. 20%; p < 0.001) and NMEP (83% vs. 18%; p = 0.003). Baseline monitoring was obtained less often for CMT patients using SSEP (20% vs. 100%; p < 0.001) and TcMEP (83% vs. 100%; p = 0.111) compared to idiopathic patients. Sweep length (time from stimulation waveform evaluation) and maximum stimulation voltage were higher in the CMT group (289 ms vs. 111 ms p = 0.007 and 740 V vs. 345 V p = 0.089, respectively).

CONCLUSION

TcMEP monitoring significantly improves the ability to provide IONM for CMT patients undergoing spinal deformity surgery. Utilizing longer sweep lengths enhances the ability to attain baseline TcMEP readings, allowing surgeons to more safely proceed with surgery for these complex patients.

Challenges in Treating Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease and Related Neuropathies: Current Management and Future Perspectives

There is still no effective drug treatment available for Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathies (CMT). Current management relies on rehabilitation therapy, surgery for skeletal deformities, and symptomatic treatment of pain; fatigue and cramps are frequent complaints that are difficult to treat. The challenge is to find disease-modifying therapies. Several approaches, including gene silencing, to counteract the PMP22 gene overexpression in the most frequent CMT1A type are under investigation. PXT3003 is the compound in the most advanced phase for CMT1A, as a second-phase III trial is ongoing. Gene therapy to substitute defective genes or insert novel ones and compounds acting on pathways important for different CMT types are being developed and tested in animal models. Modulation of the Neuregulin pathway determining myelin thickness is promising for both hypo-demyelinating and hypermyelinating neuropathies; intervention on Unfolded Protein Response seems effective for rescuing misfolded myelin proteins such as P0 in CMT1B. HDAC6 inhibitors improved axonal transport and ameliorated phenotypes in different CMT models. Other potential therapeutic strategies include targeting macrophages, lipid metabolism, and Nav1.8 sodium channel in demyelinating CMT and the P2X7 receptor, which regulates calcium influx into Schwann cells, in CMT1A. Further approaches are aimed at correcting metabolic abnormalities, including the accumulation of sorbitol caused by biallelic mutations in the sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORD) gene and of neurotoxic glycosphingolipids in HSN1.

Genotype-phenotype correlation in French patients with myelin protein zero gene-related inherited neuropathy

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Preparations for clinical trials of unfolded protein response (UPR) inhibitors (such as Sephin1) that target the upregulated UPR in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) carrying MPZ mutations are currently underway. The inclusion criteria for these trials are still being formulated. Our objective was to characterize the relation between genotypes and phenotypes in patients with CMT caused by MPZ mutations, and to refine the inclusion criteria for future trials.

METHODS

Clinical and neurophysiological data of CMT patients with MPZ mutations were retrospectively collected at 11 French reference centers.

RESULTS

Forty-four mutations in MPZ were identified in 91 patients from 61 families. There was considerable heterogeneity. The same mutation was found to cause either axonal or demyelinating neuropathy. Three groups were identified according to the age at disease onset. CMT Examination Score (CMTES) tended to be higher in the early (≤22 years) and adult (23-47 years) onset groups (mean CMTESv2 = 10.4 and 10.0, respectively) than in the late onset group (>47 years, mean CMTESv2 = 8.6, p = 0.47). There was a significant positive correlation between CMTESv2 and the age of patients in Groups I (p = 0.027) and II (p = 0.023), indicating that clinical severity progressed with age in these patients.

CONCLUSIONS

To optimize the selection of CMT patients carrying MPZ mutations for the upcoming trials, inclusion criteria should take into account the pathophysiology of the disease (upregulated UPR). Recruited patients should have a mild to moderate disease severity and a disease onset at between 18 and 50 years, as these patients exhibit significant disease progression over time.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth: From Molecules to Therapy

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) is the most prevalent category of inherited neuropathy. The most common inheritance pattern is autosomal dominant, though there also are X-linked and autosomal recessive subtypes. In addition to a variety of inheritance patterns, there are a myriad of genes associated with CMT, reflecting the heterogeneity of this disorder. Next generation sequencing (NGS) has expanded and simplified the diagnostic yield of genes/molecules underlying and/or associated with CMT, which is of paramount importance in providing a substrate for current and future targeted disease-modifying treatment options. Considerable research attention for disease-modifying therapy has been geared towards the most commonly encountered genetic mutations (PMP22, GJB1, MPZ, and MFN2). In this review, we highlight the clinical background, molecular understanding, and therapeutic investigations of these CMT subtypes, while also discussing therapeutic research pertinent to the remaining less common CMT subtypes.

New novel mutations in Brazilian families with X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

Mutations in the GJB1 gene are the second most frequent cause of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), accounting for approximately 10% of CMT cases worldwide. We retrospectively analyzed detailed clinical and neurophysiological data on four Brazilian families carrying novel mutations of the GJB1 gene. Mutations were identified by bidirectional Sanger sequence analysis on the GJB1 coding region. We identified a total of 12 subjects from four different kindred. There was no male-to-male transmission, and their clinical pictures were within the expected spectrum for GJB1-related neuropathy. Males were more severely affected than females. Five out of the eight females only had subclinical neuropathy. Nerve conduction velocities were in the intermediate range in the male patients and higher in the females affected. These mutations increase the genotypic variability associated with GJB1.

[Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease associated with hip dysplasia in an adolescent]

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is classified into hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy and can induce severe neuro-orthopaedics deformities, disabling at an early age. Hip dysplasia is present in 6% of CMT patients affecting preferentially CMT1 patients and can appear from the age of 8 years. The pathophysiological is paradoxical because we are confronted with proximal osteoarthritis deformations but genetics research brings use new trail. The main functional complaint is a hip joint pain during walking. Four orthopaedics abnormalities can be revealed by physical and radiological exam: acetabular dysplasia, femoral dysplasia, high femoral antetorsion and excentric head of femur. The natural evolution, in the absence of treatment, is an early secondary osteoarthritis. The therapeutic management should be as early as possible with preventive measures and joint health. During the symptomatic phase, the only treatment is a surgical correction. A systematic clinical examination of the hip all CMT children and a radiograph of the pelvis at the slightest clinical suspicion is recommended.

Factors influencing the evaluation and management of neuromuscular scoliosis: A review of the literature

Neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) is the second most prevalent spinal deformity (after idiopathic scoliosis) and is usually first identified during early childhood. Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common cause of NMS, followed by Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Progressive spinal deformity causes difficulty with daily care, walking and sitting, and can lead to back and rib pain, cardiac and pulmonary complications, altered seizure thresholds, and skin compromise. Early referral to specialist spinal services and early diagnosis of NMS is essential to ensure appropriate multidisciplinary patient management. The most important goals for patients are preservation of function, facilitation of daily care, and alleviation of pain. Non-operative management includes observation or bracing for less severe and flexible deformity in young patients as a temporising measure to provide postural support. Surgical correction and stabilisation of NMS is considered for patients with a deformity >40-50°, but may be performed for less severe deformity in patients with DMD. Post-operative intensive care, early mobilisation and nutritional supplementation aim to minimise the rate of post-surgical complications, which are relatively common in this patient group. However, surgical management of NMS is associated with good long-term outcomes and high satisfaction rates for patients, their relatives and carers.

Evaluation of muscle strength and manual dexterity in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

STUDY DESIGN

Matched pair study.

INTRODUCTION

Differences in hand-muscle strength/dexterity between dominant (DH) and non-dominant (NDH) hand in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) are not well understood.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

To compare muscle strength/dexterity between DH and NDH and to correlate manual dexterity, strength and sensory function.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Thirty CMT patients were studied using functional muscle testing (FMT) and strength (dynamometry), dexterity (the Nine Hole Peg Test [NHPT]), and Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function [JTT]), and sensory function (the Nottingham Sensory Assessment [NSA]).

RESULTS

Scores were worse for DH than NDH on FMT (p = 0.043) and NHPT (p = 0.014) but not on JTT (p = 0.098), handgrip strength (p = 0.710) or tripod pinch (p = 0.645). NSA did not correlate significantly with any tests (p's0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

In CMT disease, DH appears more impaired than NDH in terms of function and dexterity. Greater muscle weakness in DH may also emerge as CMT progresses.

Rehabilitation Management of the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Syndrome: A Systematic Review of the Literature

The Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) causes significant muscular deficits in the affected patients, restricts daily activities (ADL), and involves a severe disability. Although the conservative intervention is the only treatment for the disease, there is no scientific evidence so far on rehabilitation treatment. Objectives of the review are: research the best literary evidence so far on the rehabilitation treatment of CMT; critically analyze the outcome, to build an evidence-based work protocol.A systematic review of the rehabilitation of a patient with CMT, including the results from the following databases: Pubmed, Medline, Embase, Pedro, Cinahl, Ebsco discovery. Criteria for inclusion: randomized/controlled studies, analytic studies, transversal studies on a cohort of at least 10 individuals; medium/long-term report of the results.Eleven studies in total have been admitted to the final review phase; trials about physiotherapy CMT treatment (5), about orthosis treatment (6). Despite the wide range of outcomes and proposed interventions, the data points to the following: strength or endurance trainings improve functionality and ADLs of affected patients, while orthotic role is, at the moment, not completely clear.Physiotherapy treatment is a useful tool to manage CMT; more studies on a larger number of cases are needed to define orthosis utility and to establish the gold standard of the treatment.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1A: A narrative review with clinical and anatomical perspectives

Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1A (CMT1A) is regarded as the most common hereditary peripheral neurodegenerative disorder. This narrative review highlights perspectives around the historically well-established and characteristic anatomical manifestations of CMT1A seen in the feet, legs and hands, in addition to a clinical diagnosis that may be confirmed by electrophysiology, genetic or molecular markers together with the presence of a typical family history. A less well-known perspective is the potential for systemic manifestations and wider complication. The condition is characterised by a progressive clinical picture with unmistakable anatomical and neurological features that have been described since the late 19th century. There remains no cure although supportive, rehabilitative, and surgical regimes may provide helpful management or amelioration of symptoms. Most recently, the emergence of a pleotherapeutic approach suggests distinct promise. Future research focused on a detailed elucidation of the underlying molecular mechanisms underpinning myelin and axonal function may eventually hold the key to successful treatment of CMT1A. The genetics of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: current trends and future implications for diagnosis and management

Charcot–Marie–Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common hereditary polyneuropathy and is classically associated with an insidious onset of distal predominant motor and sensory loss, muscle wasting, and pes cavus. Other forms of hereditary neuropathy, including sensory predominant or motor predominant forms, are sometimes included in the general classification of CMT, but for the purpose of this review, we will focus primarily on the forms associated with both sensory and motor deficits. CMT has a great deal of genetic heterogeneity, leading to diagnostic considerations that are still rapidly evolving for this disorder. Clinical features, inheritance pattern, gene mutation frequencies, and electrodiagnostic features all are helpful in formulating targeted testing algorithms in practical clinical settings, but these still have shortcomings. Next-generation sequencing (NGS), combined with multigene testing panels, is increasing the sensitivity and efficiency of genetic testing and is quickly overtaking targeted testing strategies. Currently, multigene panel testing and NGS can be considered first-line in many circumstances, although obtaining initial targeted testing for the PMP22 duplication in CMT patients with demyelinating conduction velocities is still a reasonable strategy. As technology improves and cost continues to fall, targeted testing will be completely replaced by multigene NGS panels that can detect the full spectrum of CMT mutations. Nevertheless, clinical acumen is still necessary given the variants of uncertain significance encountered with NGS. Despite the current limitations, the genetic diagnosis of CMT is critical for accurate prognostication, genetic counseling, and in the future, specific targeted therapies. Although whole exome and whole genome sequencing strategies have the power to further elucidate the genetics of CMT, continued technological advances are needed.

Phenotypic variability of CMT4C in a French-Canadian kindred

INTRODUCTION

Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 4C (CMT4C) is an autosomal recessive dysmyelinating neuropathy characterized by precocious and rapidly progressive scoliosis.

METHODS

Patients in a French-Canadian kindred were evaluated with clinical examination, electrophysiologic study, and genomic DNA extraction.

RESULTS

Six of 10 siblings were clinically symptomatic with supportive electrophysiologic features. The proband presented with regional side-to-side sensorimotor asymmetry, typical pes cavus without obvious scoliosis, and unremarkable plain films of the spine. Affected siblings all share symptoms of foot deformity but have variable onset of neuropathic symptoms, degree of extremity weakness, progression of symptoms, and, most notably, evidence of scoliosis. DNA sequence analysis revealed a novel combination of 2 known recessive mutations, p.R904X and p.R954X, in the SH3TC2 gene.

CONCLUSIONS

A broad spectrum of phenotypes should be considered in the possible diagnosis of CMT4C. The absence of scoliosis or late-onset symptoms should not exclude SH3TC2 from the list of candidate genes under consideration. Age of onset and clinical features were variable and suggest that polygenic factors contribute to the final phenotype.

Misunderstanding of foot drop in a patient with charcot-marie-tooth disease and lumbar disk herniation

We report the case of 57-year-old woman diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and lumbar disk herniation (LDH). She had left leg weakness and foot numbness, foot deformity (muscle atrophy, high arch, and clawed toes). The lumbar spine MRI showed LDH at L4-5. Additionally, electrophysiology results were consistent with chronic peripheral motor-sensory polyneuropathy (axonopathy). In genetic testing, 17p11.2-p12 duplication/deletions characteristic of CMT disease were observed. We confirmed the patient's diagnosis as CMT disease and used conservative treatment.

Surgical treatment and intraoperative spinal cord monitoring in scoliosis associated with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy: a case report

There has been only one reported case of neuromuscular scoliosis following chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). However, no cases of scoliosis that were treated with surgery secondary to CIDP have been previously described. A 16-year-old boy with CIDP was consultant due to the progression of scoliosis with the coronal curve of 86° from T8 to T12. Posterior correction and fusion with segmental pedicle screws were performed under intraoperative spinal cord monitoring with transcranial electric motor-evoked potentials. Although the latency period was prolonged and amplitude was low, the potential remained stable. Coronal curve was corrected from 86° to 34° without neurological complications. We here describe scoliosis associated with CIDP, which was successfully treated with surgery under intraoperative spinal cord monitoring.

Childhood chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy associated with acquired scoliosis: a case report

An 11-year-old boy presented with progressive proximal muscle weakness and areflexia. He also had scoliosis with right convexity in the thoracic spine. Nerve conduction studies showed demyelination with conduction blocks. The level of protein in the cerebrospinal fluid was elevated. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbosacral spine showed enhancement and hypertrophy of the nerve roots. The patient responded well to steroids. The association of acquired scoliosis with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy has not been reported before.

Pediatric orthopedic conditions in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: a literature review

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

To provide the pediatrician with a comprehensive overview of the orthopedic considerations and potential issues in a child with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. CMT is not one disease but rather a myriad of genetic and biochemical processes that manifest in a final common pathway of physical impairment with cardinal orthopedic elements.

RECENT FINDINGS

This review incorporates the most current research on CMT, including its orthopedic elements, and the opinion of specialists in pediatric orthopedics specifically in the areas of foot and ankle, hip dysplasia and spinal deformity.

SUMMARY

This article provides a framework for pediatricians to understand the complex and variable natural history of CMT with regard to neurologically produced musculoskeletal changes.

Hereditary peripheral neuropathies of childhood: an overview for clinicians

This review focuses on the "pure" hereditary peripheral neuropathies where peripheral nerve disease is the main manifestation and does not address neurodegenerative disorders associated with but not dominated by peripheral neuropathy. Aetiologies of childhood-onset peripheral neuropathies differ from those of adult-onset, with more inherited conditions, especially autosomal recessive. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is the commonest neuromuscular disorder. The genetic labels of CMT (Charcot-Marie-Tooth) disease types 1-4 are the preferred sub-type terms. Clinical presentations and molecular genetic heterogeneity of hereditary peripheral neuropathies are diverse. For most patients worldwide, diagnostic studies are limited to clinical assessment. Such markers which could be used to identify specific sub-types include presentation in early childhood, scoliosis, marked sensory involvement, respiratory compromise, upper limb involvement, visual or hearing impairment, pyramidal signs and mental retardation. These key markers may assist targeted genetic testing and aid in diagnosing children where DNA testing is not possible.

Evaluation and treatment of symptomatic pes planus

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

To provide the pediatrician with a comprehensive synopsis of pediatric pes planus, also known as flatfoot. The term pes planus is a physical finding that generates some confusion in the medical community because it describes a spectrum of conditions that are diagnosed and managed differently.

RECENT FINDINGS

Some of the recent data incorporated in this review come from pediatric, orthopaedic, and podiatric literature. These sources describe the clinical features and the latest treatment options for pes planus.

SUMMARY

This article will provide some guidance to evaluate and treat the many causes of pediatric pes planus. Nonsurgical and operative management will be discussed.
