Abstract
The study is aimed to assess the effects of serum vitamin D levels and their relationship to early dental implant failures. A total of 174 implants in 109 patients were placed and serum vitamin D levels were noted on the day of implant placement. Implants were followed up until restoration, approximately 3-6 months later, and any implant failure was reported based on 50% or more bone loss or implant mobility. Eight individuals had an implant fail early and their vitamin D levels had a mean of 42.54 ng/mL compared with the successful patients' levels of 31.92 ng/mL. Although not statistically significant, there was no correlation between patients' low serum vitamin D levels and early implant failure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Restoration of bone defects in the craniac vault may require the use of autografts, allografts, xenografts, or synthetic grafts. There are promising data that vitamin D may play a positive role in graft incorporation. The purpose of the present study is the evaluation of the impact of vitamin D addition to human-derived bone grafts in the healing of critical-sized bone defects in porcine skulls. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four identical critical-sized defects were created in the calvaria of 8 adult Landrace Large White pigs. The first defect was left blank as control, the second defect was filled with human-derived bone graft, the third defect was filled with human-derived bone graft enriched with a low concentration of vitamin D (2 mg/mL), and the fourth defect was filled with human-derived bone graft enriched with a high concentration of vitamin D (10 mg/mL). The animals were sacrificed after 12 weeks. Harvested tissue specimens were qualitatively evaluated by histology. New bone formation (bone volume/tissue volume) was quantitatively measured by histomorphometry. RESULTS Signs of bone formation were evident in all bone sockets. Mean values of the bone volume/tissue volume of the 4 defects were 10.91%, 11.05%, 10.40% and 10.87% respectively, at 12 weeks. In 5 animals, high concentration of vitamin D caused a significant improvement in bone formation in relation to controls. In 3 animals, a high concentration of vitamin D was associated with decreased bone formation compared with controls. No statistical difference was observed in the graft healing among the 4 graft sites ( P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study have shown that the addition of vitamin D to human-derived bone grafts does not have a significant effect on bone formation and graft incorporation in critical-sized bone defects of the porcine calvaria. Further high-quality studies are needed to fully elucidate the role of vitamin D in bone formation and bone graft union.

Abstract
Bone metabolism is a key factor for successful osseointegration, and low vitamin D levels may negatively impact the process of osseointegration after implant placement. The study was aimed at evaluating the relation of vitamin D levels with dental implant osseointegration and subsequently the success or failure of the implant. The focused questions were-What is the effect of vitamin D levels on successful dental implant osseointegration and what is the effect of vitamin D supplementation on successful implant osseointegration? A search was conducted on PubMed and Google Scholar using the terms "vitamin D," "cholecalciferol," "1,25(OH) D," "dental implant," "osseointegration," and "bone implant contact" for a period of 10 years from 2011 to 2020. Clinical trials, cross-sectional studies, case series, and case reports were included. A total of ten studies were included after the screening process. Five of these studies evaluated the effect of vitamin D supplementation on osseointegration, whereas five only evaluated the effect of vitamin D deficiency on dental implant osseointegration. Only five of these studies reported dental implant failure varying from 7% to 13% in vitamin D deficient/insufficient groups. Positive relationship exists between serum vitamin D levels and dental implant osseointegration; however, few studies failed to report any relation. More prospective clinical research studies as well as randomized controlled trials are needed to show a significant correlation between decreased serum levels of vitamin D and increased risk of dental implant failure in perspective of vitamin D supplementation which can promote the osseointegration of dental implants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This narrative review aims to investigate the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration, analyzing their potential positive or negative impact on the direct structural and functional connection between bone and load-carrying implants. BACKGROUND The review seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of osseointegration, which refers to the successful integration of an implant with living bone, resulting in no progressive relative movement between them. Exploring the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration is crucial for optimizing outcomes and enhancing patient care in orthopedic implant procedures. METHODS Relevant studies on the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration were identified through a literature search. Electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar, were utilized, employing appropriate keywords and MeSH terms related to osseointegration, implants, and drug interventions. The search was limited to English studies. DISCUSSION This overview presents a detailed analysis of the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration. It explores drugs such as bisphosphonates, teriparatide, statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, beta-blockers, nitrites, and thiazide diuretics as promoters of osseointegration. Conversely, loop diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, cyclosporine A, cisplatin, methotrexate, antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), antiepileptics, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and anticoagulants are discussed as inhibitors of the process. The role of vitamin D3 remains uncertain. The complex relationship between drugs and the biology of implant osseointegration is emphasized, underscoring the need for further in vitro and in vivo studies to validate their effects CONCLUSION: This narrative review contributes to the literature by providing an overview of the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration. It highlights the complexity of the subject and emphasizes the necessity for more extensive and sophisticated studies in the future. Based on the synthesis of the reviewed literature, certain drugs, such as bisphosphonates and teriparatide, show potential for promoting implant osseointegration, while others, including loop diuretics and certain antibiotics, may impede the process. However, additional research is required to solidify these conclusions and effectively inform clinical practice.

Abstract
Facelifting is increasingly popular among the population. It exceeded the limits of post-traumatic facia-reconstruction. Both the demand and the methods available are getting increasingly diverse. The minimally invasive technique revolutionized the facelift, although it took some time to completely comprehend the mechanics. The roles of vitamin D in numerous physiological processes in which it is involved have mostly been elucidated in the last decade. Our hypothesis is based on one of these roles, that is, vitamin D intervenes in changing the type of collagen by changing its location; therefore, collagen will have a supporting role for the subcutaneous tissue. A group of 156 patients with different facelifting methods was followed: 93 minimally invasive (NC), 49 classical surgery (C) and 14 with the combined technique (NC + C). The change in the subcutaneous tissue was monitored by an elastograph. The level of vitamin D was monitored in order to assess the immediate and long-term effects of vitamin D on the progression of subcutaneous fibrosis. It was proven that an optimal level of vitamin D has a beneficial effect in maintaining the volume of subcutaneous tissue in patients from the NC and NC + C groups, the best results being in the NC + C group. An increase in the subcutaneous volume was recorded, which leads to a decrease in elasticity (statistical significance p < 0.05) and the lowering of the subcutaneous tissue, and an increased amount of lowering corresponds to a lowering of vitamin D levels.

Abstract
We evaluated the correlation that Vitamin D (Vit D), cholesterol levels, and T- and Z-scores of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans have with cone beam computed tomography values assessed in the anterior and posterior regions of maxillary and mandibular jaws. In total, 187 patients were recruited for this clinical study. Patients’ ages ranged between 45 and 65 years. Patients with valid DXA results, serum Vit D and cholesterol levels, and no evidence of bone disorders in the maxilla or mandibular region were included in the study and grouped in the control (non-osteoporosis) and case (osteoporosis) groups. Patients with a history of medical or dental disease that might complicate the dental implant therapy, chronic alcohol users, and patients who took calcium or Vit D supplements were excluded. The outcome variables assessed in the investigation were Vit D, cholesterol, Z-values, and cone beam computed tomography values. Regarding the case group, a significant (p < 0.05) inverse relationship was observed between Vit D and cholesterol. Although insignificant (p > 0.05), a positive relationship was found between Vit D and the cone beam computed tomography values in all regions of the jaws, except the mandibular posterior region (p < 0.05). Pearson correlation analysis was carried out. Vit D and cholesterol showed a statistically insignificant (p > 0.05) negative association with the cone beam computed tomography values in all regions of the jaws. However, the Z-values were highly correlated with the cone beam computed tomography values in all regions of the jaws (r > 7, p < 0.05). Vit D, cholesterol levels, and Z-values in women and men from young adulthood to middle age (45–65) were related with the cone beam computed tomography values of the jaws.

Abstract
Purpose Dental implants have become a definitive method for the esthetic and functional rehabilitation of both partially and completely edentulous arch. There is a significant role of vitamin D in bone metabolism and there are only few human studies that evaluate the effect of vitamin D deficiency on stability of dental implants. The study thus aims to evaluate the correlation of vitamin D deficiency and implant stability in delayed endosseous implant. Methods The study included 20 subjects of either gender in the age group of 20-50 years, who required implant placement for rehabilitation of partially edentulous condition. Vitamin D status was evaluated for all subjects preoperatively. Implant stability was checked postoperatively at three months and six months using Electronic Technology Resonance Frequency Analysis. Results The study found that for every 1 ng/ml increase in Vitamin D levels, the implant stability Quotient value (ISQ) significantly increased by 0.48 at 3 months and 0.62 units at 6 months, which was statistically significant at P = 0.01 and P = 0.002, respectively. Statistical analysis was done using Student Paired t test, Pearson Correlation test and Simple Linear regression analysis. Conclusion Albeit the smaller sample size, the results of the study showed the positive influence of vitamin D on stability of implant. The study thus emphasizes on the significance of screening the vitamin D status of subjects prior to implant placement.

Abstract
This systematic literature review set out to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and dental implants in terms of survival rates, marginal bone loss, and associated complications. The review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, performing an electronic search in four databases (Pubmed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus), complemented by a manual search up to April 2022. Four articles were selected for analysis. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale tool was used to assess the quality of evidence of cohort studies, and the Cochrane bias assessment tool was used to assess the quality of evidence of randomized clinical trials. The study included 1089 patients restored with 1984 dental implants, with follow-up periods ranging from 20-240 months. Cases presenting lower serum vitamin D levels obtained slightly worse results in terms of marginal bone loss. Longer follow-up periods are needed in order to determine whether serum vitamin D levels affect implant survival rates and osseointegration over time.

Abstract
The accelerating bone healing process is still a major challenge in clinical orthopedics, especially in critical-sized bone defects. Recently, Nanofiber membranes are showing increasing attention in the biomedical field due to their good biocompatibility, mechanical stability, and the ability to work as a drug carrier to achieve localized and sustained drug delivery. Herein, a multifunction nanofiber membrane loaded with vitamin D (Vit D) and curcumin (Cur) was successfully fabricated using electrospinning technology. In addition, we innovatively modified Vit D with PEG to improve the hydrophilicity of PCL nanofibers. The vitro results of CCK-8, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and mineralization demonstrated that the PCL/Vit D-Cur membrane had great potential for enhancing the proliferation/differentiation of osteoblasts. Moreover, the synergistic effect of Vit D-Cur loaded PCL nanofiber membrane showed a superior ability to improve the anti-inflammatory activity through M2 polarization. Furthermore, in vivo results confirmed that the defect treated with PCL/Vit D-Cur nanofiber membrane was filled with the newly formed bone after 1 month. These results indicate that the Vit D/Cur loaded membrane can be applied for potential bone regeneration therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental implants have been one of the most popular treatments for rehabilitating individuals with single missing teeth or fully edentulous jaws since their introduction. As more implant patients are well-aged and take several medications due to various systemic conditions, clinicians should be mindful of possible drug implications on bone remodeling and osseointegration. OBJECTIVE The present study aims to study and review some desirable and some unwelcomed implications of medicine on osseointegration. METHODS A broad search for proper relevant studies were conducted in four databases, including Web of Science, Pubmed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. RESULTS Some commonly prescribed medicines such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), glucocorticoids, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), anticoagulants, metformin, and chemotherapeutic agents may jeopardize osseointegration. On the contrary, some therapeutic agents such as anabolic, anti-catabolic, or dual anabolic and anti-catabolic agents may enhance osseointegration and increase the treatment's success rate. CONCLUSION Systemic medications that enhance osseointegration include mineralization promoters and bone resorption inhibitors. On the other hand, medications often given to the elderly with systemic problems might interfere with osseointegration, leading to implant failure. However, to validate the provided research, more human studies with a higher level of evidence are required.

Abstract
The variety in shape and type of dental implants in the present time is considered one of the most successful evolutions in dentistry. This facilitates dental treatment options to restore patient function and appearance. However, numerous significant factors influence the predictability of survival or the success rates of dental implants, some of which, such as vitamin D levels, have not been included in many studies. The main purpose of this systematic review was to investigate whether there is a relationship between low serum levels of vitamin D and early dental implant failures (EDIFs). Our literature search involved international databases including PubMed, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and Web of Science. Initially, according to our search criteria, 1200 studies were found. After excluding duplicates, incomplete studies, and studies not meeting our inclusion criteria, only six human studies were included in this research and analyzed. Finally, upon meticulous analysis of included studies, this systematic review revealed inconsistent results in articles with respect to the association between vitamin D deficiency and implant failures. Large-scale studies, especially clinically relevant studies, on this subject is recommended.

Abstract
Background Many factors play a significant role in osseointegration and healing after dental implant insertion and restoration. Some factors are related to dental biomaterials, such as the dental implant, prosthesis, and grafting materials. Other factors can be connected to operator skills and accumulated experience. Local and systemic patient-related factors are crucial in determining the success of the dental implant. Thorough examination and analysis of local factors using available examination tools are vital to prepare the implant candidate for such treatment. The patient's systemic condition directly affects the healing of the dental implant. One of the most overlooked systemic factors is the patients' vitamin D level, which influences bone formation around the implant and subsequent osseointegration. The current review examined the available literature regarding the association between vitamin D supplementation and dental implant osseointegration. Methods Data of this review were derived from recent research available on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Inclusion criteria were the relation between the vitamin D serum and dental implant osseointegration or failure. The Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist was followed to perform the review. The study's outcome was the need for vitamin D supplementation to prevent implant failure. Results Five human studies (including case reports, case series, and retrospective studies) and six animal studies. All included studies discussed the relationship between vitamin D, early dental implant failure, and bone implant contact. Three retrospective studies found no significant relationship between vitamin D supplementation and EDIFs in humans. On the other hand, one retrospective study showed a significant relationship in humans. A case report and case series claimed that the implant was successfully placed after vitamin D supplementation. A total of four animal studies showed a significant relationship between vitamin D supplementation and osseointegration of the dental implant. Two animal studies showed no significant association. Conclusion To ensure optimal treatment outcomes, it is recommended to supplement the patient with vitamin D if the serum level is not within the normal range. Further clinical studies and case reports are needed to confirm the association between serum vitamin D levels and osseointegration.

Abstract
Vitamin D is effective in bone healing. The aim of this study was to assess marginal bone loss (MBL) around dental implants in patients with sufficient and insufficient serum levels of vitamin D. This was a prospective cohort study with a pre-protocol population. Patients who underwent dental implantation in the first or second molar region and had a long-cone peri-apical digital radiograph taken at the time of loading and 12 months later were studied. Patients were assigned to one of three groups based on their serum vitamin D level: group 1, the serum level of vitamin D was deficient, group 2 insufficient, and group 3 sufficient. The marginal bone level change from immediately after loading to 12 months later was considered as MBL. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to compare MBL between the three groups. Ninety patients were included (30 in each group). The mean MBL was 1.38 ± 0.33 mm in group 1, 0.89 ± 0.16 mm in group 2, and 0.78 ± 0.12 mm in group 3. Analysis of the data demonstrated a significant difference in the mean MBL among the three groups (P < 0.001). There was a correlation between MBL and vitamin D serum levels (P < 0.001). It appears that a low serum level of vitamin D may be associated with increased MBL.

Abstract
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble secosteroid that plays a significant role in the whole body, including the maxillofacial region. The discovery of its receptors in many cells and organs made it possible to reveal the participation of vitamin D not only in the regulation of calcium phosphate metabolism, but also in immune processes, in providing anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, slowing down cell proliferation and stimulating differentiation. In this literature review, we demonstrate the association between low vitamin D levels and the development of recurrent aphthous stomatitis, the course and response to treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, the severity of periodontal diseases, and the processes of osseointegration and bone remodeling during dental implantation and guided tissue regeneration. The aim of our article was to demonstate a possible connection between vitamin D level and the oral diseases that can be presented at an oral surgery appointment, which will help clinicians to reduce the risk of early dental implant failure, ensure favorable outcomes of augmentative operations, as well as decrease the destructive effects of severe periodontitis and other conditions throug knowledge and timely lab tests and endocrinologist prescriptions.

Abstract
In this narrative review, the role of vitamin D deficiency in the pathophysiology, healing of fragility fractures, and rehabilitation is discussed. Vitamin D status can be assessed by measuring serum 25(OH)-vitamin D level with standardized assays. There is a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency (25(OH)D < 50 nmol/l (i.e., 20 ng/mL)) or deficiency (25(OH)D < 25 nmol/l (i.e., 10 ng/mL)) in patients with fragility fractures and especially in those with a hip fracture. The evidence on the effects of vitamin D deficiency and/or vitamin D supplementation on fracture healing and material osseointegration is still limited. However, it appears that vitamin D have a rather positive influence on these processes. The fracture liaison service (FLS) model can help to inform orthopedic surgeons, all caregivers, and fractured patients about the importance of optimal vitamin D status in the management of patients with fragility fractures. Therefore, vitamin D status should be included in Capture the Fracture® program as an outcome of FLS in addition to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and specific antiosteoporosis medication. Vitamin D plays a significant role in the pathophysiology and healing of fragility fractures and in rehabilitation after fracture. Correction of vitamin D deficiency should be one of the main outcomes in fracture liaison services.

Abstract
Bone grafting is one of the most commonly used options to treat large bone defects. Evidence has shown that vitamin D may affect osseointegration, a major component for successful bone grafting. In vitro studies have proved that implants coated with activated vitamin D stimulate bone production and reduce bone resorption around implants. Animal studies have noticed that oral administration of vitamin D may stimulate bone formation as well as strengthen and support the interaction between bone and implants. Vitamin D insufficiency may affect negatively the cortical peri-implant bone formation, suggesting a negative effect in graft incorporation. Few clinical studies have observed that vitamin D administration enhanced graft incorporation and bone formation, while severe vitamin D deficiency is associated with failed implant osseointegration. Even though there are encouraging results of vitamin D supplementation on graft incorporation in animal studies, the use of vitamin D as an adjuvant in bone grafting procedures cannot be fully supported at the moment. However, there is theoretical support in the use of vitamin D after surgery and the use of bone grafts to support the bone structure, relieve pain and increase graft absorption. Further experimental and clinical studies are required to support the administration of vitamin D and its analogues in such cases.

Abstract
Background. Dental implants are one of the most successful treatments for restoring tooth function and beauty. Identifying the causes of dental implant failure is useful and vital. This review was aimed at studying the possible role of vitamin D in early implant failure. Method and Material. This review was designed based on the PRISMA guideline. Data was collected using keywords including implant, vitamin D, deficiency, failure, dental, OR tooth in international databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Embase, until 2020. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, data were extracted and gathered in a checklist. Results. Finally, twelve studies were selected from five different countries. In 6 studies (2 animal studies and four human studies), there was no significant relationship between vitamin D deficiency and dental implant failure. In the other six studies (1 animal study and five human studies), there was a significant relationship in this regard. Conclusion. It is difficult to conclude the association between vitamin D and implant failure based on the literature’s researches. However, vitamin D appears to play an essential role in implant success through its effects on immune system modulation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The most important factor which is responsible for the positive course of implant treatment is the process of osseointegration between the implant structure and the host's bone tissue. The aim of this study was to assess what effect the 25-hydroxycholecalciferol concentration and vitamin D deficiency treatment have on changes in the bone level at the implant site during the process of osseointegration in the mandible. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was with 122 people qualified for implant surgery, who were assigned to three research groups (A, B, and C). Laboratory, clinical, and radiological tests were performed on the day of surgery, and after 6 and 12 weeks. The bone level in the immediate proximity of the implant was determined by radiovisiography (RVG). RESULTS The bone level after 12 weeks in Groups B and C was significantly higher than after 6 weeks. The bone level in the study Group B was significantly higher than in Group A. The study showed that the higher the levels of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol were observed on the day of surgery, the higher was the level of bone surrounding the implant after 6 and 12 after surgery. CONCLUSION The correct level of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol on the day of surgery and vitamin D deficiency treatment significantly increase the bone level at the implant site in the process of radiologically assessed osseointegration.

Abstract
At present, dental implants are used more than before, and their high success rate is attributed to sufficient osseointegration, which depends on prosthetic-, implant-, and patient-related factors. The quality and quantity of bone and the host response are the main patient-related factors. Vitamin D3 affects bone metabolism by stimulating both osteoclasts and osteoblasts. This study aimed to review the human studies on the efficacy of vitamin D3 for dental implant osseointegration. Search of the literature yielded only 4 studies on human models, of which 2 showed the optimal efficacy of vitamin D3 for dental implant osseointegration, whereas the remaining 2 did not report any positive effect. However, this finding may be related to the small sample size of the vitamin D3-deficient group, which can compromise statistical analyses. In conclusion, vitamin D3 seems to be effective for dental implant osseointegration, although further research is required on human models.

Abstract
This comprehensive review of the 2019 restorative dental literature is offered to inform busy dentists regarding remarkable publications and noteworthy progress made in the profession. Developed by the Scientific Investigation Committee of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, each author brings discipline-specific expertise to 1 of 8 sections of the report: (1) prosthodontics; (2) periodontics, alveolar bone, and peri-implant tissues; (3) implant dentistry; (4) dental materials and therapeutics; (5) occlusion and temporomandibular disorders; (6) sleep-related breathing disorders; (7) oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery; and (8) dental caries and cariology. The report targets important information likely to influence day-to-day dental treatment decisions. Each review is not intended to stand alone but to update interested readers so that they may visit source material when greater detail is desired. As the profession moves toward evidence-based clinical decision-making, an incredible volume of potentially valuable dental literature continues to increase. It is the intention of this review and its authors to provide assistance in negotiating the extensive dental literature published in 2019. It is our hope that readers find this work useful in the clinical management of dental patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitamin D has been shown to play a vital role in bone mineral homeostasis by stimulating the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. The critical role of Vitamin D in bone metabolism triggered the need to evaluate the effect of Vitamin D deficiency and hence replacement of the same on osseointegration of dental implants. This prospective study evaluated the crestal bone level in patients having low level of Vitamin D treated with dental implant with or without Vitamin D3 supplements. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective clinical study was conducted on 32 patients based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were divided into two groups on the basis of Vitamin D level < 30 ng/ml (Group I: patients receiving Vitamin D3 supplements, i.e., cholecalciferol 1 g sachet 60,000 IU/month) or <30 ng/ml (Group II: not receiving Vitamin D3 supplements). The crestal bone level measurements were made with the help of Digimizer Image Analysis, MedCalc software. RESULTS All implants showed clinically acceptable crestal bone level at interval of 1 week (baseline), 3 months, and 6 months. There was a statistically nonsignificant difference seen for the values between the groups (P > 0.05) for all other values at various time intervals. However, there was a statistically significant/highly significant difference seen for the values between the groups (P < 0.01, 0.05) for 3 months distal with higher values for Group I as compared to Group II. CONCLUSION From the study, it can be concluded that cholecalciferol has systemic effects on accelerating bone formation around titanium implant.

Abstract
Adequate nutrition is essential for maintaining good oral health. Minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus found in the diet constitute the main structural components of the tooth. Their inadequacy leads to absorption impairment, increased bleeding tendency, bone resorption, looseness, and premature tooth loss. Inadequacy of those essential minerals is associated with delayed tooth eruption and with enamel or dentin hypoplasia. Taking calcium without magnesium results in soft dental enamel, which cannot resist the acids causing tooth decay. In addition to magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus, adequate vitamin D is needed to maintain optimal oral health. Vitamin D exerts anti-inflammatory effects and helps in calcium absorption and bone remodeling. Moreover, adequate vitamin D status could reduce formation of dental caries by delaying its onset and progression. Here we summarize the oral manifestations of vitamin D and magnesium inadequacy.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D3 (VD3) is a commonly used supplement in clinical practice. Cytochrome P450 3A11 (CYP3A11) is the most important monomeric enzyme involved in metabolism of drugs. This study aimed to investigate effects of vitamin D3 (VD3) on CYP3A11 activity. Material/Methods Forty male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided a Control group (peanut oil 0.1 ml/kg/d), a Low-VD3 group (100 IU/kg/d), a Medium-VD3 group (400 IU/kg/d), and a High-VD3 (1600 IU/kg/d) group. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein after midazolam (MDZ) administration. CYP3A11 expressions in liver and colon were detected by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay. The concentration of serum 25(OH)D3 and serum 1,25(OH)2D3 were evaluated using ELISA. Effects of different dosages of vitamin D3 on metabolism of MDZ were evaluated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results Vitamin D3 significantly enhanced serum 25(OH)D3 and 1,25(OH)2D3 levels in rats compared to Control rats (p<0.05). Expressions of hepatic CYP3A11 were more than 10-fold higher in rats treated with vitamin D3 compared to Control rats (p<0.05). Expressions of colon CYP3A11 were 5-fold higher than in Control rats (p<0.05). CYP3A11 expressions in vitamin D3-treated groups were significantly higher compared to the Control group (p<0.05). MDZ levels were significantly higher in vitamin D3-treated rats compared to that in Control rats (p<0.05). Concentrations of serum MDZ at every sampling point were remarkably lower in the vitamin D3-treated rats than in Control rats (p<0.05). Conclusions Vitamin D3 was transformed into 1,25(OH)2D3 by triggering CYP3A11 and CYP3A11 activity and by hydrolyzing MDZ.

Abstract
Background. Since osseointegration depends on bone metabolism, low levels of vitamin D in the blood may negatively
affect bone formation around dental implants. To date, only a few studies have investigated the possible connection between
serum levels of vitamin D and early dental implant failure (EDIF), i.e. failure that occurs within 4 months after placement,
before the connection of the prosthetic abutment. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship
between low serum levels of vitamin D and EDIF.
Methods. Data used for this retrospective study were derived from the records of a private dental clinic. Inclusion criteria
were patients who had been treated with dental implants, inserted with a submerged technique from January 2003 to December
2017. EDIF was the outcome of this study. Chi-squared test was used to investigate the effect of patient-related variables (age,
gender, smoking habit, history of periodontal disease and serum levels of vitamin D) on EDIF.
Results. Originally, 885 patients treated with 1,740 fixtures were enrolled in this study. Overall, 35 EDIFs (3.9%) were
reported. No correlation was found between EDIF and the patients' gender (P=0.998), age (P=0.832), smoking habit (P=0.473)
or history of periodontal disease (P=0.386). Three EDIFs (11.1%) were reported in 27 patients with serum levels of vitamin
D <10 ng/mL, 20 EDIFs (4.4%) in 448 patients with levels between 10 and 30 ng/mL, and 12 EDIFs (2.9%) in 410 patients
with levels >30 ng/mL. Although there was a clear trend toward an increased incidence of EDIF with lowering of serum
vitamin D levels, no statistically significant difference (P=0.105) was found among these three groups.
Conclusion. Within its limitations (retrospective design, low number of patients with severe blood levels of vitamin D
enrolled), this study failed to demonstrate a significant relationship between low serum levels of vitamin D and increased risk
of EDIF. However, since a dramatic increase in EDIFs with lowering of vitamin D levels in the blood has been reported,
further clinical studies with appropriate design (prospective or randomized controlled studies on a larger sample of severely
deficient patients) are needed to better investigate this topic

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to assess whether growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy can enhance implant osseointegration. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted from 1982 to March 2016. A structured search using the keywords "growth hormone," "implants," and "osseointegration" was performed to identify preclinical and clinical in vivo controlled studies and was followed by a 2-phase search strategy. Initially, 31 potentially relevant articles were identified. After removal of duplicates and screening by title and abstract, 10 potential studies were included. Studies were assessed for bias and data were synthesized using a random-effects meta-analysis model. RESULTS All studies were preclinical animal trials, and the follow-up period ranged from 2 to 16 weeks. Seventy percent of the included studies reported an increase in bone-to-implant contact in animals receiving GH compared with controls. Meta-analysis showed a significant mean difference for bone to implant between GH groups versus controls (no GH supplementation) of 10.60% (95% confidence interval: 3.79%-17.41%) favoring GH administration. CONCLUSION GH treatment seems to promote osseointegration around implants in preclinical studies; however, these findings must be assessed in highly controlled human clinical trials as a number of confounding factors may have influenced the outcomes of the included studies.

Abstract
Implant surface modification has been used to improve osseointegration. However, evidence regarding improved new bone formation (NBF) and osseointegration with the use of collagen-chondroitin sulfate (CS) matrix coated implants remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of collagen-CS matrix coating on the osseointegration of implants. The focused question was "Does the incorporation of collagen-CS matrix in implant surfaces influence osseointegration?" To answer the question, indexed databases were searched up to July 2017 using various combinations of the key words "collagen", "chondroitin sulfate", "osseointegration", and "implants". The initial literature search identified 497 articles, of which 18 reporting experimental studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Thirteen of the studies included (72%) reported that implants coated with a collagen-CS matrix presented higher NBF, bone-to-implant contact, and/or bone volume density. The strength of this observation was supported by meta-analysis results. Nevertheless, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the lack of standardization regarding the dosage formulation of collagen-CS, short-term follow-up, and lack of assessment of confounders. On experimental grounds, the incorporation of collagen-CS matrix into implant surfaces appears to promote osseointegration. From a clinical perspective, the results from animal models support phase I studies in healthy humans.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present systematic review was to assess the effect of local zoledronate (ZOL) delivery (topical or as implant surface coatings) on osseointegration. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this systematic review, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed. To address the focused question, 'Does local zoledronate delivery enhance osseointegration?' indexed databases were searched without time or language restrictions up to and including April 2017 using various combination of the following keywords: 'zoledronate', 'bisphosphonates', 'osseointegration' and 'topical administration'. Letters to the Editor, historic reviews, commentaries, case-series and case-reports were excluded. RESULTS Initially, 383 articles were identified out of which, 23 experimental studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In 18 studies, ZOL was incorporated into implants surfaces as a coating and in five studies ZOL was applied topically (bone graft or irrigation) into the bone cavities. Results from 87% studies reported that local delivery of ZOL (coating or topical) is effective in enhancing osseointegration or new bone formation around implants. CONCLUSIONS Local ZOL delivery (coating or topical) seems to enhance osseointegration in animals; however, from a clinical perspective, further randomized control trials with long-term follow-up are needed in this regard.

Abstract
Titanium implants are widely used on an increasing number of patients in orthopedic and dental medicine. Despite the good survival rates of these implants, failures that lead to important socio-economic consequences still exist. Recently, research aimed at improving implant fixation, a process called osseointegration, has focused on a new, innovative field: systemic delivery of drugs. Following implant fixation, patients receive systemic drugs that could either impair or enhance osseointegration; these drugs include anabolic and anti-catabolic bone-acting agents in addition to new treatments. Anabolic bone-acting agents include parathyroid hormone (PTH) peptides, simvastatin, prostaglandin EP4 receptor antagonist, vitamin D and strontium ranelate; anti-catabolic bone-acting agents include compounds like calcitonin, biphosphonates, RANK/RANKL/OPG system and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERM). Examples of the new therapies include DKK1- and anti-sclerostin antibodies. All classes of treatments have proven to possess positive impacts such as an increase in bone mineral density and on osseointegration. In order to prevent complications from occurring after surgery, some post-operative systemic drugs are administered; these can show an impairment in the osseointegration process. These include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, proton pump inhibitors and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The effects of aspirin, acetaminophen, opioids, adjuvants, anticoagulants and antibiotics in implant fixations are not fully understood, but studies are being carried out to investigate potential ramifications. It is currently accepted that systemic pharmacological agents can either enhance or impair implant osseointegration; therefore, proper drug selection is essential. This review aims to discuss the varying effects of three different classes of treatments on improving this process.

Abstract
An association between vitamin D deficiency and early dental implant failure is not properly verified, but its role in osteoimmunology is discussed. This article illustrates two case reports with vitamin D deficiency and early implant failure. Prior to implant placement, the first patient received crestal bone grafting with autologous material. Both patients received dental implants from different manufacturers in the molar region of the mandible. In the case of bone grafting in the first patient, all implants were placed in a two-stage procedure. All implants had to be removed within 15 days after implant placement. Vitamin D serum levels were measured: Both patients showed a vitamin D deficiency (serum vitamin D level <20 μg/l). After vitamin D supplementation, implant placement was successful in both patients. Prospective, randomized clinical trials must follow to affirm the relationship between vitamin D deficiency, osteoimmunology, and early implant failure.

Abstract
PURPOSE To our knowledge from indexed literature, the present study is the first one to systematically review the influence of local delivery of pamidronate (PAM) and/or ibandronate (IBA) on osseointegration enhancement. The aim of the present systematic review was to assess the efficacy of IBA and/or PAM local delivery (topically or coating on implants surfaces) in promoting osseointegration. MATERIALS AND METHODS To address the focused question, "Does local IBA and/or PAM delivery enhances osseointegration?," indexed databases were searched without time or language restrictions up to and including May 2016 using various combinations of the following keywords: "pamidronate," "ibandronate," "bisphosphonates," "osseointegration," and "topical administration." Letters to the Editor, historic reviews, commentaries, case series, and case reports were excluded. RESULTS Fifteen studies were included. Fourteen studies were performed in animals and 2 were clinical trials. One study reported an experimental model and a clinical trial in the same publication. Results from 12 experimental studies and 2 clinical studies reported improved biomechanical properties and/or osseointegration around implants with PAM and/or IBA. Two experimental studies showed that PAM and/or IBA did not improve osseointegration. CONCLUSIONS On experimental grounds, local IBA and/or PAM delivery seems to enhance osseointegration; however, from a clinical perspective, further randomized control trials are needed to assess the effectiveness of IBA and PAM in promoting osseointegration around dental implants.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this systematic review was to compare the crestal bone loss around splinted and nonsplinted adjacent implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS To address the focused question, "Is crestal bone loss around adjacent implants different with splinted from that with nonsplinted restorations?," indexed databases were searched from 1965 up to and including May 2016 using various combinations of the following keywords: "implant," "splinted," "nonsplinted," "unsplinted," "connected," "unconnected," "nonconnected," and "bone loss." Letters to the editor, commentaries, historic reviews, case reports, case series, animal studies, and studies on full-arch rehabilitation were excluded. RESULTS Six studies were included with titanium implants ranging from 114 to 1187 implants. All studies had nonsplinted and splinted restorations that ranged from 20 to 234 restorations and from 60 to 970 restorations, respectively. In all the studies, the follow-up period after the restoration placement ranged between 1 and 22 years, with a mean follow-up ranging between 3 and 10.18 ± 3.18 years. In all studies, the mean crestal bone loss for implants restored with nonsplinted restorations ranged between 0.30 ± 0.65 and 1.3 ± 0.2 mm, whereas the mean crestal bone loss for implants restored with splinted restorations ranged between 0.50 ± 0.8 and 1.22 ± 0.95 mm. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this review it is concluded that adjacent implants restored with splinted and nonsplinted fixed restorations did not exhibit a difference in crestal bone loss. The evidence from this systematic review suggests further investigation.

Abstract
Aim. To investigate whether there is a correlation between early dental implant failure and low serum levels of vitamin D. Methods. All patients treated with dental implants in a single centre, in the period 2003–2015, were considered for enrollment in this study. The main outcome was early implant failure. The influence of patient-related variables on implant survival was calculated using the Chi-square test. Results. 822 patients treated with 1625 implants were selected for this study; 27 early failures (3.2%) were recorded. There was no link between gender, age, smoking, history of periodontitis, and an increased incidence of early failures. Statistical analysis reported 9 early failures (2.2%) in patients with serum levels of vitamin D > 30 ng/mL, 16 early failures (3.9%) in patients with levels between 10 and 30 ng/mL, and 2 early failures (9.0%) in patients with levels <10 ng/mL. Although there was an increasing trend in the incidence of early implant failures with the worsening of vitamin D deficiency, the difference between these 3 groups was not statistically significant (P = 0.15). Conclusions. This study failed in proving an effective link between low serum levels of vitamin D and an increased risk of early implant failure. Further studies are needed to investigate this topic.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Titanium implant surfaces have been modified to improve osseointegration; however, the evidence for incorporating zinc into titanium implants to improve new bone formation and osseointegration is not clear. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the efficacy of treating titanium surfaces with zinc on the osseointegration of implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS The focused question addressed was, "Does incorporating zinc in titanium implant surfaces influence osseointegration?" Indexed databases were searched up to January 2016 using the key words "Bone to implant contact"; "implant"; "zinc"; "osseointegration." Letters to the editor, case reports/case series, historic reviews, and commentaries were excluded. The pattern of the review was customized to summarize the pertinent data. RESULTS Ten experimental studies were included, all of which were performed in animals (5 in rabbits, 4 in rodents, and 1 in goats). The number of titanium implants placed ranged from 10 to 78. The results from all studies showed that incorporating zinc into titanium implants enhanced new bone formation and/or bone-to-implant contact around implants. One study reported that zinc enhanced the removal torque on implants. CONCLUSIONS The current available evidence on adding zinc to titanium implants surfaces to enhance osseointegration remains unclear. Further investigation is necessary to assess its effectiveness and safety in humans and to establish a standard methodology and ideal compound for incorporating zinc ion into titanium implant surfaces in a clinical setting.

Abstract
Periodontal health is influenced by a number of factors such as oral hygiene, genetic and epigenetic factors, systemic health, and nutrition. Many studies have observed that a balanced diet has an essential role in maintaining periodontal health. Additionally, the influences of nutritional supplements and dietary components have been known to affect healing after periodontal surgery. Studies have attempted to find a correlation between tooth loss, periodontal health, and nutrition. Moreover, bone formation and periodontal regeneration are also affected by numerous vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. The aim of this review is to critically appraise the currently available data on diet and maintenance of periodontal health and periodontal healing. The effects of nutritional intervention studies to improve the quality of life and well-being of patients with periodontal disease have been discussed.
