Abstract
Most injuries that dancers sustain are to the lower extremities, specifically the foot and ankle region. Numerous potential risk factors have been examined for dancer injuries such as technical mistakes and fatigue. The purpose of this study was to compare landing kinematics and kinetics during jumps that are common in dance pre and postfatigue. Ten adolescent advanced level dancers participated in this study. Subjects completed 3 split leaps and 3 center leaps before and after a fatigue protocol performed on a stationary bike. Live motion capture was used to record landing kinematic and kinetic data. Results of this study showed a significant increase in ankle eversion and external rotation angles for center leaps from pre- to postfatigue protocol (P = .020 and P = .020, respectively) as well as significant increases in ankle eversion and knee adduction moments for center leaps (P = .020 and P = .036, respectively). These results show that after a fatigue protocol, there are changes to the kinematics of dancers that may make them more susceptible to ankle injury.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Low back pain (LBP) accounts for nearly a third of musculoskeletal disorders in ballet dancers. LBP has a significant short- and long-term impact on dancers' performance, career, income, identity and overall health. However, the literature provides little specific guidance for the prevention and management of low back pain in ballet dancers. Against this background, this review presents those considerations and highlights gaps in the literature that warrant future research. METHOD We examined 15 bibliographical databases from February to June 2022. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Recommendations for prevention and treatment formulated in the current literature omit elements of key importance for classical dancers and do little to distinguish the issues they face from those facing other athletes. The management of LBP in classical dancers needs to take proper account of the biopsychosocial and environmental landscapes in which they work. CONCLUSION Building trustful relationships, shared decision-making and exploration of dancers' beliefs are key pillars of LBP care. The current literature does not fully explore these issues and fails to provide dance-specific screening tools.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine associations between patellofemoral pain (PFP) and musculoskeletal features (such as tendon structure and bone properties) in young (pre- and post-pubertal) female dancers. A total of 49 dancers participated in this study (mean age 13.6 ± 2.9; weight 47.0 ± 13.2; height 153.7 ± 12.9 and body mass index (BMI) 19.4 ± 3.1) and were assessed for the following factors: dance background and Tanner stage through interviews; ultrasonography assessments of bone properties and patellar tendon structure through ultrasonographic tissue characterization and quantitative ultrasound, respectively; and anthropometric measurements, muscle strength, range of motion (ROM), hypermobility and PFP through physical examinations. PFP was found in 49% of the participants. Post-pubertal dancers with no-PFP were found to have greater muscle strength, greater radial and tibial properties, and better tendon structure compared to pre-pubertal dancers with PFP and compared to pre-pubertal dancers with no-PFP [F(2, 41) = 18.64, p < .001; F(2, 41) = 20.46, p < .001; F(2, 41) = 33.06, p < .001; and, F(2, 41) = 6.02, p = .007, respectively]. Logistic regression showed that tibial bone properties and range of movement (ROM) in hip external rotation were significantly associated with PFP [odds ratio (OR) = .889 and OR = 2.653, respectively; Cox & Snell R2 = .701]. The study revealed a high prevalence of PFP among young dancers, with low bone properties and hyperjoint ROM emerging as the main factors that are related to PFP. These findings should be addressed by medical teams, athletic trainers, and dance teachers regarding the need for implementing modifications to dance training programmes and injury-prevention strategies in young pre-pubertal dancers.

Abstract
Background Adolescent dancers are at high risk for injuries due to the physical demands of dance training and the physiological changes that occur during adolescence. Though studies report high injury rates, there are few standardized screening tools available for adolescent dancers. Hypothesis/Purpose To develop and describe a standardized, feasible, evidence-based, and clinically relevant screen for adolescent dancers. Study Design Descriptive Epidemiology Study. Methods Dancers at two suburban pre-professional dance studios, in two cohorts, participated in the Columbia Adolescent Dancer Screen (CADS) that includes dance injury history, health questionnaires (EAT-26, SF-36, DFOS), aerobic capacity, range of motion, strength, balance/orthopedic special tests, and dance technique. Participants were asked to complete a weekly injury surveillance questionnaire derived from the Dance-Specific Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre Questionnaire on Health Problems for 14 weeks following the screening. Feasibility was assessed using process and content analysis in four areas: practicality, demand, implementation, and adaptation. Results Descriptive data were collected from 32 female dancers aged 11-17 with cohort one averaging 18.57 dance hours per week and cohort two averaging 10.6 dance hours per week. The screen was practical, able to screen seven to eight dancers per hour utilizing nine assessors and requiring a one-hour commitment from dancers. Cost and space requirements were considered and kept to a minimum while utilizing portable equipment. All screening slots were filled with all dancers agreeing to follow-up injury surveillance, indicating high demand. The screen was implemented with two cohorts with revisions to improve efficiency applied for the second cohort. Conclusion The CADS is a feasible screening tool for adolescent dancers that overcomes barriers by being pragmatic, evidence-based, and efficient. Screening can be implemented to obtain baseline values, inform wellness recommendations, and establish relationships with medical professionals. Level of Evidence Level 3b.

Abstract
Background A large number of studies have found that the musculoskeletal injury of modern and contemporary dancers has a high incidence. Previous publications have indicated that there are many potential factors that are related to dancing injury; however, they have not been proven, and even some data are conflicting in different research. Results The search yielded 18 prospective studies reporting on professional and pre-professional modern or contemporary dancers from companies and schools. The prevalence of modern and contemporary dancers was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.74~0.90). The injury proportion of trauma, overuse, ankle and foot, lower extremity, joint and ligaments, muscle and tendons, and time-loss were 0.40, 0.26, 0.49, 0.34, 0.33, and 0.29 in the total number of injuries. There was no evidence of a significant difference in sex, age, and education program. The factors of BMI and injury history achieved statistical significance, and the p-values were less than 0.01. Conclusion Based on the results of this article, BMI and injury history may be risk factors for injury in contemporary and modern dancers. Modern and contemporary dancers have a high prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries. Lower extremity injuries are the most common in the whole body, with injuries to the foot and ankle being more frequent. The mechanism of injury is mostly overuse injury, and the injured tissues are mostly muscle tendons and joint ligaments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To examine modifiable and nonmodifiable factors for associations with dance-related injury among preprofessional ballet dancers over 5 academic years. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Full-time preprofessional ballet dancers (n = 452; 399 female; median age [range], 15 years [11-21]) participated across 5 academic years at a vocational school. Participants completed baseline screening and online weekly injury questionnaires including dance exposure (hours/week). Zero-inflated Poisson regression models were used to examine associations between potential risk factors measured at baseline and self-reported dance-related injury. RESULTS: In count model coefficients, left one leg standing score (log coefficient estimate, -0.249 [95% CI: -0.478, -0.02]; P = .033) and right unipedal dynamic balance time (log coefficient estimate, -0.0294 [95% CI: -0.048, -0.01]; P>.001) carried a protective effect with increased years of training when adjusted for Athletic Coping Skills Inventory (ACSI) score. A significant association was found for left unipedal dynamic balance time and dance-related injury (log coefficient estimate, 0.013 [95% CI: 0.000, 0.026]; P = .045) when adjusted for years of training and ACSI score. There were no significant associations between dance-related injury and ankle and hip range of motion, active straight leg raise, or Y Balance Test measures. CONCLUSION: When adjusted for years of previous dance training and psychological coping skills, there was a significant association between limb-specific lumbopelvic control and dynamic balance tasks, as well as self-reported dance-related injury in preprofessional ballet. Abstract
Irish dance is growing in popularity, evolving to a more athletic and demanding dance style. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review, previously registered with PROSPERO, to identify the prevalence, incidence, and the injury pattern among Irish dancers and analyse the associated risk factors. Six online databases and two dance-specific science publications were searched systematically. Studies were included if the patterns of injuries among Irish dancers were evaluated or the factors associated with injury were analysed, published in English or Portuguese, in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Four reviewers assessed the quality and level of evidence using the Downs and Black criteria and a modified Oxford Centre of Evidence-Based Medicine 2009 model, respectively. Eleven articles were included, eight of Level 3c (cross-sectional) and three of Level 3b (prospective). Mean DB percentage score was 63% ± 7.2%. Prevalence ranged from 72.2% to 92.6%, affecting mostly the foot/ankle complex. Only two articles reported incidence, which ranged from 3.4 to 10.6 injuries/1000 h danced depending on injury definition. Psychological factors, elite level, and insufficient/poor sleep were associated with musculoskeletal injury. Injury prevalence and incidence is high in Irish dancers, with the foot and ankle being more affected. Due to heterogeneity in injury definitions, methods, and populations, along with the need for improvement in studies quality, recommendations were made for future research.

Abstract
Research in dance psychology and mental health is rapidly growing. Yet, evidence in the field can seem dispersed due to few existing meta overviews that outline research in dance related to mental health. Therefore, the aim of this scoping review is to present an overview of the state of the art and to strengthen future dance research by gathering and contextualizing existing findings on mental health in dance. Following the PRISMA guidelines and protocols, 115 studies were included in the review. Overall, the data analysis shows a predominant adoption of quantitative research but a lack of applied interventions of preventive and reactive procedures in mental health. Similarly, there is a tendency to study pre-professional dancers, whereas research into professional dancers, especially aged 30–60 is underrepresented. Dance genres have been unevenly investigated, with classical ballet being the most researched, whereas different dance styles and freelance employment are in dire need of in-depth investigation. Conceptualizing mental health as a dynamic state, the thematic analysis identified three main categories: stressors, the mental process, and outcomes. These factors appear to be in a complex interaction. Overall, the existing literature gives indications of components essential to understanding dancers’ mental health but has several blind spots and shortcomings, thus, a lot of in-depth understanding and research is still needed to fully grasp its dynamic complexity.

Abstract
Introduction Collegiate athletes who suffer a concussion may possess prolonged impairments even after clearance for return-to-participation, which may place them at an increased risk of lower extremity injury. Objective To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies examining risk of lower extremity musculoskeletal injury following a concussion in collegiate athletes. Methods A literature search was performed using the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus. The following search terms were used to identify relevant articles, ["concussion" OR "brain injury" OR "mild traumatic brain injury" OR "mTBI"] AND ["lower extremity injury" OR "musculoskeletal injury"]. Articles were included if they were published between January 2000 and July 2021 and examined collegiate athletes' risk of sustaining a lower extremity musculoskeletal injury following a concussion. Methodological quality of included studies was performed with a modified Downs and Black Checklist. The primary outcome of interest was the risk of sustaining a lower extremity musculoskeletal injury following a concussion. A random effects meta-analysis was conducted in which a summative relative risk (RR) for sustaining a lower extremity injury in athletes with and without a history of concussion was calculated. Results Seven studies met the eligibility criteria to be included in the systematic review. There were 348 athletes in the concussion group and 482 control athletes in the included studies. Most of the studies were of good or excellent quality. Five of the seven studies were able to be included in the meta-analysis. College athletes who suffered a concussion possessed a 58% greater risk of sustaining a lower extremity musculoskeletal injury than those who did not have a history of a concussion (RR = 1.58[1.30, 1.93]). Conclusions Lower extremity injury risk is potentially increased in college athletes following a concussion compared to those without a history of a concussion. Further research is needed to investigate the mechanism behind this increased risk. Clinical assessments throughout the concussion return-to-play protocol may need to be improved in order to detect lingering impairments caused by concussions. Level of Evidence 1.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Several studies and recent systematic reviews have investigated injury in dance settings and have largely focused on specific concert dance genres (i.e., ballet, contemporary) and elite levels (i.e., pre-professional, professional) of dance. Less is known about the health of those who participate in dance education settings, namely teachers and students from private dance studios. Given that these individuals constitute a large proportion of the dance community, greater clarity of risks in the dance training environment could benefit an underserved majority by informing the development of effective injury prevention strategies.<br/> Objective: The primary objective was to describe injury rates and characteristics associated with participation in organized dance education settings.<br/> Methods: Six electronic databases were searched to April 2021 (Medline, EMBASE, SportDiscus, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Cochrane). Selected studies met a priori inclusion criteria that required original data from dance teacher and student samples within formal dance education settings. All genres of dance were eligible. Studies were excluded if no injury outcomes or estimates of dance exposure were reported, if injuries occurred during rehearsal and performance, or if dance was used as a therapeutic intervention or exercise. Two reviewers independently assessed each paper for inclusion at abstract and full text screening stages. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Level of Evidence tool.<br/> Results: The initial database search identified 1,424 potentially relevant records, 26 were included and scored. Most studies (n = 22) focused on dance students only, three included only dance teachers, and one study included both. Among both dance students and teachers, the majority of injuries reported were overuse or chronic and involved the lower limb. For studies that reported injury rates (n = 14), estimates ranged from 0.8 to 4.7 injuries per 1,000 dance hours, 4.86 per 1,000 dancer-days, and 0.21 to 0.34 per 1,000 dance exposures.<br/> Conclusions: Based on the current research, dance students and teachers experience a similar rate of injury to concert and professional dancers, and their injuries are most commonly overuse injuries involving the lower extremity. There have been few high-quality investigations of injury specific to the dance training environment. Therefore, consensus around the burden of injury in the dance education settings remains difficult. Future dance epidemiological investigations that examine the burden of injury among dance teachers and students, include operational injury and exposure definitions, and utilize prospective designs are warranted.

Abstract
Clinical Scenario: Dancers commonly stand in hip external rotation due to the esthetics that ballet requires. Increased external rotation is desired which leads dancers to find ways to compensate to increase their external rotation, an action known as compensated turnout. Dancers commonly rotate at the tibiofemoral joint and/or the talocrural joint to increase external rotation of the entire lower body, placing increased stress on these joints. This critically appraised topic focuses on the relationship between types of turn out and lower-extremity injury in dancers. Clinical Question: In elite dancers, does compensated, anatomical, or functional turnout influence lower-extremity injuries? Summary of Key Findings: Three studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. One study demonstrated a relationship between compensated turnout and traumatic injuries, low back pain, and number of injuries in modern dancers. Greater compensated turnout in dancers was associated with a greater number of injuries. Two studies showed no relationship between anatomical or functional turnout and injuries in dancers. Clinical Bottom Line: Based on 3 level 2b studies, there is level C evidence to suggest that increased compensated turnout is associated with increased traumatic lower-extremity injuries, low back pain, and number of injuries in university modern dancers compared with dancers with a reduced angle of compensated turnout. This relationship was not found between anatomical or functional turnout and lower-extremity injuries in elite dancers. Strength of Recommendation: There is weak evidence to suggest that compensated turnout, but not anatomical or functional turnout, is related to lower-extremity musculoskeletal injury. More research is needed to study compensatory mechanisms in a broader range of dancers and the relationship to lower-extremity injury.

Abstract
The positive effects of dance on health indices in youth are widely recognized, but participation in dance is accompanied with a certain risk of injury. This prospective study aimed to investigate injury occurrence and to evaluate the possible influences of specific predictors on the occurrence of musculoskeletal problems and injuries in adolescent dancers. Participants were 126 dancers (21 males; 11–18 years), who were competitors in the urban dance, rock and roll, and standard/Latin dance genres. Predictors included sociodemographic factors, anthropometric/body build indices, sport (dance) factors, and dynamic balance. The outcome variable was injury status, and this was evaluated by the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre Overuse Injury Questionnaire (OSTRC). Predictors were evaluated at baseline, and outcomes were continuously monitored during the study period of 3 months. During the study course, 53% of dancers reported the occurrence of a musculoskeletal problem/injury, and dancers suffered from an average of 0.72 injuries over the study period (95% CI: 0.28–1.41), giving a yearly injury rate of 280%. Gender and dance styles were not significantly related to the occurrence of injury. Higher risk for injury was evidenced in older and more experienced dancers. Dynamic balance, as measured by the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), was a significant protective factor of injury occurrence, irrespective of age/experience in dance. Knowing the simplicity and applicability of the SEBT, continuous monitoring of dynamic balance in adolescent dancers is encouraged. In order to prevent the occurrence of musculoskeletal problems/injuries in youth dancers, we suggest the incorporation of specific interventions aimed at improving dynamic balance.

Abstract
Dancers and other performing artists are subject to head impacts that result in concussion-like symptoms. In spite of this, performing arts do not have access to the continual, focused emphasis on the diagnosis, management, and prevention of concussions that is commonplace in sports. Performing arts present a unique environment in which concussions occur and must be managed. This article outlines what is known about performing arts concussions, describes mechanisms of head impacts sustained by participants in dance and the related artforms of theater, circus, and film and television stunts, and offers concussion management guidelines for these artistic fields.

Abstract
A preparticipation physical evaluation (PPE) is a requirement that many athletes must complete before participating in organized sports. Currently, the traditional musculoskeletal (MSK) portion of the PPE lacks robust evidence to support its ability to accurately predict those at greater risk for MSK injury. Functional movement testing has garnered attention for potential use in the PPE having shown some promise for greater sensitivity at identifying those at greater risk for MSK injury. Despite the widespread use of MSK PPE screening to identify athletes at greater risk for MSK injury, there is no significant evidence demonstrating that subsequent interventions result in decreased MSK injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dance involves movements of complexity and physical intensity which result in stress on the body. As a consequence, dancers are at risk of injury which can impact on their well-being. Screening tools are used for injury prevention to identify those dancers at risk of injury. The aim of this study was to investigate which screening tools can predict injury in dancers, encompassing all dance genres, levels and ages. METHODS An electronic search of seven databases from their inception to December 2017 was conducted. The databases were the Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), CINAHL, eBOOK Collection (EBSCOhost), MEDLINE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, SPORTDiscus and PEDro: the Physiotherapy Evidence Base. The following search terms were used: (i) Dance AND injury AND Screening, (ii) Screening AND dance and (iii) Musculoskeletal AND Screening AND Dance. Studies were assessed using a 20-point scoring tool, and eligible studies were included in a meta-analysis. RESULTS The mean methodological quality score was 12.2 points. Injured dancers had a significantly higher compensated turnout range of motion than non-injured dancers: pooled mean difference of compensated turnout (23.29°; 95% CI 14.85-31.73; P < 0.00001; I2 = 0%). Injured dancers had significantly greater functional turnout range of motion when compared to non-injured dancers: pooled mean difference of functional turnout (14.08°; 95% CI 7.09-21.07; P < 0.0001; I2 = 0%). There also some evidence for use of hip range of motion as a predictor of dance injury. CONCLUSIONS Some evidence exists for the potential use of dance-specific positions as a predictor of injury. A number of studies were limited by a lack of prospective injury design, injury definition and self-reporting of injury.
