Effect of Kinesio taping on wrist proprioception in healthy subjects: A randomized clinical trial

BACKGROUND

Although the use of KT has increased considerably in the clinical practice in the last years, there is limited evidence about the effects of its application in proprioception.

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of KT on joint position sense and force sense on the wrist of healthy subjects.

METHODS

Fifty-four subjects were analyzed in a randomized, crossover, single-blind study design. To determine the force sense, the subjects had to reach 50% of their maximum grip force. Wrist joint position sense was assessed during active repositioning tests at the target angles of 30° flexion and extension of wrist. A digital dynamometer was used to determine the sense of force and a digital goniometer was used to determine the joint position sense. Subjects were evaluated with KT (I- strip on ventral aspect of forearms from origin to insertion) and placebo (an inelastic tape was applied following the same procedure as KT).

RESULTS

No significant differences have been found in the force sense, neither in the comparisons between control and interventions (p=0.286), nor between pre and post-intervention (p=0.111). For wrist joint position sense, a statistically significant effect (p< 0.05) was found at 30º of extension between the control and experimental group in favor of the control group.

CONCLUSIONS

The application of KT did not produce changes in FS and only caused a significant improvement in JPS in extension (30º). The results appear to indicate that the application of KT to improve proprioception in healthy subjects should be reconsidered.

Does kinesio tape alter muscle strength in athletes? - Systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Kinesio tape (KT) is still a matter of debate and the results of studies that evaluated its effects on muscle strength in athletes are still contradictory and inconclusive.

OBJECTIVES

To analyze randomized clinical trials (RCT) to compare the effects of KT on muscle strength with the control/placebo group among athletes with and without musculoskeletal injury.

METHOD

The search involved the databases: PubMed, Web of Science, LILACS, PEDro, The Cochrane Library, Medline, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Embase, without filter and included RCTs evaluating the effects of KT on muscle strength in athletes with or without musculoskeletal injury, comparing it to a control/placebo intervention. The following were excluded: studies with duplicate information; who used instruments for indirect assessment of muscle strength; involving a different population of athletes. Meta-analysis calculations were performed using post-intervention muscle strength data in the Review Manager (RevMan) program.

RESULTS

10 articles were eligible, among which 5 studies were included in the meta-analysis. In the primary analysis, no relevant clinical effect was found (immediate post-intervention <24h: Z = 1.97 CI95% = 0.35[0.00-0.70]; p = 0.05 I2 = 0% and late post-intervention ≥24h: Z = 1.47 CI95% = 0.59[-0.20-1.38]; p = 0.14 I2 = 69%) when comparing the KT group with the control/placebo groups for muscle strength of lower limbs in participants with and without musculoskeletal injury and in the subgroup analysis (including only individuals without injury), there was also no clinical effect (Z = 1.50, 95%CI = 0.31[-0.10-0.71] p = 0.13, I2 = 0%) of KT for muscle strength.

CONCLUSIONS

KT does not contribute to muscle strength gain in athletes with and without musculoskeletal injuries.

Effectiveness of Elastic Therapeutic Tape in Reducing Edema, Pain and Trismus following Surgery for Facial Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Facial fractures cause postoperative morbidity, including edema, pain, and trismus. Elastic therapeutic tapes are used for optimizing recovery. Background: The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of elastic tape Kinesio taping (KT) in reducing postoperative morbidity in facial fractures surgeries. Methods: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Searches were conducted in the Cochrane, Medline, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science databases using a pre-established search strategy. Results: A total of 811 studies were retrieved after the duplicates were removed, and only randomized clinical trials were included. Eight trials, involving 319 participants, were deemed eligible. One study solely investigated the effect on edema, while the others analyzed at least two of the variables of interest. Results from two RCTs, where qualitative analysis was applicable, suggest a potential reduction in edema in the KT group compared to the control group on the second (RR -0.55, 95% CI -0.89 to -0.22; p = 0.01; I2 = 0%) and third postoperative days (RR -0.71, 95% CI -1.01 to -0.40; p < 0.00001; I2 = 0%). Conclusions: KT is effective in controlling postoperative edema following surgery for facial fractures. However, the effects on pain and trismus should be explored further in studies with standardized methods.

Immediate and localized effect of Kinesio tape on the hand grip strength of sedentary female adults

The current study aimed to assess the immediate and localized effect of Kinesio Taping (KT) on hand grip strength. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 sedentary female university students (aged 18-23) divided into two groups of 30 subjects each. The experimental group received KT with 50% tension of the tape on the forearm and 100% tension on the hand, and the control group received a placebo application of KT (KT without tension on the hand and forearm). Hand grip strength was assessed before and immediately after applying KT using a hand-held dynamometer with a one-minute rest between trials. The experimental group detected a significant improvement in hand grip strength during the post-intervention stage compared to the control group (mean difference 9.72 Lbs; 95% CI, -12.90 to -6.54; P<0.05) with a medium effect size. In addition, a significant improvement in handgrip strength was observed between pre-intervention and post-intervention in the experimental group (mean difference 6.5 Lbs.; 95% CI, -7.58 to -5.42; P<0.05) with a high effect size. However, the control group failed to show significant improvement in handgrip strength between pre-and post-intervention (P=0.666). KT application on the hand and forearm immediately augmented the hand grip strength of the dominant hand in sedentary female university students.

Influence of taping on force sense accuracy: a systematic review with between and within group meta-analysis

Taping is a common technique used to address proprioceptive deficits in both healthy and patient population groups. Although there is increasing interest in taping to address proprioceptive deficits, little is known about its effects on the kinetic aspects of proprioception as measured by force sense accuracy. To address this gap in the literature, the present systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of taping on force sense accuracy. A search for relevant literature was conducted following PRISMA guidelines across seven databases and one register. Eleven studies with 279 participants were included in the review out of 7362 records. In the between-group analyses, we found a significant improvement in absolute (p < 0.01) and relative (p = 0.01) force sense accuracy with taping compared to no comparator. Likewise, a significant improvement in absolute (p = 0.01) force sense accuracy was also observed with taping compared to placebo tape. In the within group analysis, this reduction in the absolute (p = 0.11) force sense accuracy was not significant. Additional exploratory subgroup analyses revealed between group improvement in force sense accuracy in both healthy individuals and individuals affected by medial epicondylitis. The findings of this meta-analysis should be interpreted with caution due to the limited number of studies and a lack of blinded randomized controlled trials, which may impact the generalizability of the results. More high-quality research is needed to confirm the overall effect of taping on force sense accuracy.

Progressive tension protocol for muscle strength with Kinesio tape in runners - double-blind randomized clinical trial

Abstract Introduction Kinesio tape (KT), although frequently used in sports, is still a matter of debate, and the results of studies that evaluated its effects on muscle strength (MS) in athletes are still inconclusive and contradictory. Objective To evaluate the effect of a progressive KT tension protocol on knee MS in runners over an eight-week intervention. Methods Clinical trial involving 49 runners of both sexes randomized into two groups: KT (KT with progressive tension protocol) and placebo (KT without tension). The MS of knee flexors and extensors was evaluated by isokinetic dynamometer (60º/s and 90º/s) at four moments: (1) without KT; (2) with KT and without tension; (3) without KT (after 8 weeks after of intervention); (4) with KT and with tension (after 8 weeks after of intervention). Inter- and intra-group comparisons were made. The significance level adopted was 95% (p < 0.05). Results There were no significant differences in MS between the groups at any of the evaluated moments. There was a statistically significant difference in MS (60º/s) in both groups (KT and placebo) when comparing moments 4 and 2 for knee flexors, and in the placebo group between moments 4 and 2 and moments 4 and 3 for knee extensors. Conclusion The progressive tension protocol of KT was not able to intervene in the SM gain of knee flexors and extensors of runners in inter and intragroup comparisons.

Kinesiologic Tape on Post Operative Swelling, Pain, Trismus in Zygomatico-Maxillary Complex Fracture after Orif: A Changing Tactics

There has been always a need of new methods to control post operative complications in OMFS. A randomized prospective study was done to assess the effect of K tape on postoperative swelling, pain, trismus in Zygomatico-maxillary Complex (ZMC) fracture after open reduction with internal fixation using two point fixation. 30 patients of either gender undergoing ORIF for ZMC fracture using two point fixation of age group between 18 and 50 years were included in the study. Patients were divided into treatment either with or without Kinesiologic tape. Tape was applied directly after surgery and maintained for at least 5 days postoperatively. Facial swelling was quantified using a five-line measurement at six specific points of time. Pain and degree of mouth opening was measured. Patient's subjective feeling was asked. The values were subjected to Fischer's exact test, Independent sample test, Mann whitney U test, Wilocoxon sign rank test. The results of this study show that application of Kinesiologic tape after zygomatico maxillary complex fracture surgery significantly reduced the incidence of swelling with an earlier resolution of swelling, and decreased the maximum turgidity for more than 60% during the first 2 days after surgery. Although, Kinesiologic tape has no significant influence on pain control but reduction in trismus in the Kinesiologic tape group compared to the non-Kinesiologic tape group. Furthermore, patients with Kinesiologic tape felt significantly lower morbidity than those without Kinesiologic tape. This study suggests that Kinesiologic tape is a promising, simple, less traumatic, economical approach, which is free from adverse reaction and improves patients quality of life.

Forearm Flexor Tendon Injury in Adolescent Athletes: Risk Factors, Treatment, and Prevention

ABSTRACT

Injury to the flexor pronator mass is a common condition that is especially prevalent in overhead throwing athletes. The increasing incidence of these injuries has promoted considerable efforts in research to better understand the pathology, risk factors, and potential mechanisms to prevent injury in these athletes. While there are numerous intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with injury, a common theme involves chronic overuse and microtrauma with inadequate resting intervals between performances. The purpose of this review is to discuss medial elbow injuries in young athletes with a particular focus on the flexor pronator mass.

Effects of Kinesio Taping on Muscle Force of Quadriceps Femoris and Hamstring Tendon in Un-Dominant Side in Normal Adults

Objective To observe the effects of kinesio taping on muscle force of quadriceps and hamstring in un-dominant side.

MethodsThe subjects are consisted of 25 normal adults ranging from 20 to 25. The experiment was carried out by Biodex S4 in the angular velocity of 60°/s. 24 hours of ongoing taping later, the experiment was taken again by multijoint isokinetic test and training system before applying the tape, taping immediately and 24h-taping. The indexes are peak torque (PT), relative torque (PT/BW), total work (TW) and the radio of the muscle force between hamstring tendon and quadriceps femoris (R).

Results Compared with un-taping(T1), in taping immediately(T2), it is significantly increased at PT, PT/BW and TW in quadriceps femoris (P<0.05); it is increased at PT, but there’s no difference (P>0.05), and it is significantly increased at PT/BW(P<0.01) and TW (P<0.05) in hamstringtendon; it is very significantly increased at R in taping immediately(T2) (P<0.01). After 24 h’s taping(T3), compared with un-taping(T1), it is very significantly increased at PT, PT/BW both in quadriceps femoris and hamstring tendon (P<0.01), while it is very significantly increased in quadriceps femoris (P<0.01) and significantly in hamstring tendon (P<0.05) at TW; it is significantly increased at R(P<0.05). Compared with taping immediately(T2), it is increased at PT, PT/BW in quadriceps femoris, but there is no difference (P>0.05), while it is significantly increased at TW (P<0.05) ; it is significantly increased at PT and TW (P<0.05), but it is no difference at PT/BW (P>0.05) in hamstring tendon; it is no difference at R (P>0.05).

Conclusion The technology of Y-style kinesio taping can improve the muscle force of quadriceps and hamstring in the un-dominant side in normal adults, while the effect of consisting taping is significant.

The Effects of Forearm Kinesio-Taping on Hand Grip Strength and Endurance in Female Squash Elites

Background: Hand grip plays a fundamental role in most daily and athletic activities of the upper extremities. Objectives: The study compared the effect of various methods of forearm Kinesio-taping (KT) on the hand grip strength and endurance of Iranian elite squash players during their sporting activities at different times. Methods: Thirty-three female squash players were assigned to a quasi-experimental study, and KT was applied on their dominant forearm (on the flexor area, on the extensor area, and placebo taping). Grip strength was evaluated before, immediately, 30, and 60 minutes after KT, and grip endurance was also assessed before and 60 minutes after KT using MIE digital grip analyzer. Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to analyze the results of grip strength, and ANOVA and the sample t-test were applied to analyze the grip endurance data. Results: The findings revealed no significant differences within the grip strength at different phases (P > 0.05). However, p values for the outcomes of KT on the flexor area‎, KT on the extensor area‎, and placebo mode were respectively 0.145, 0.178, 0.065 in each phase of the evaluation. A significant difference ‎among KT groups and the LSD test revealed a significant increase in grip endurance in the mode of KT on the extensor area, whereas there have been no significant differences in grip endurance in KT on flexor (P = 0.785) and extensor (P = 0.457) areas. Conclusions: There was no obvious superiority of the various methods of forearm ‎ KT ‎ on grip strength at different times; nevertheless, KT was an efficient method for retaining grip endurance in squash players with no significant differences between the flexor and extensor locations.

Are there any changes in strength after the application of Kinesio taping in lateral epicondylalgia?

BACKGROUND

In 1973, Dr. Kenzo Kase developed Kinesio taping from the hypothesis that this external component could aid the functions of muscles and other tissues. There are different studies on this issue, but none has completely clarified the research question.

OBJECTIVE

To study the application of Kinesio taping in the variation of isometric muscle strength of the hand extension and grip, isokinetic strength of the pronation and supination movements, and the time it takes to reach that strength in patients with lateral epicondylalgia.

METHODS

An analytical, experimental, randomized study was carried out with 104 subjects with lateral epicondylalgia. The subjects were randomly distributed among two groups: one received Kinesio taping and the other a placebo material. A pre- and post-intervention measurement was performed. The post-measurement was carried out 24 hours later so as to completely eliminate the fatigue effect produced by the first day measurements, as well as to ensure that the intervention was effective, and not immediate. The measurements were made using a dynamometer.

RESULTS

No significant differences were found between the application of Kinesio taping and placebo material in subjects with lateral epicondylalgia regarding the variation of muscle strength in any of the study variables (p> 0.05 for all studied variables).

CONCLUSIONS

Kinesio taping produces no change in strength after application and exerts an effect similar to that of a placebo.

Kinesiology Tape: A Descriptive Survey of Healthcare Professionals in the United States

BACKGROUND

The existing body of kinesiology tape (KT) research reveals inconsistent results which challenges the efficacy of the intervention. Understanding professional beliefs and KT clinical application might provide insight for future research and development of evidence-based guidelines.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to survey and document the beliefs and clinical application methods of KT among healthcare professionals in the United States.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional survey study.

METHODS

A 30-question online survey was emailed to members of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Academy of Orthopedic Physical Therapy, and American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy. Professionals were also informed through a recruitment post in different private healthcare Facebook groups.

RESULTS

One thousand and eighty-three respondents completed the survey. Most respondents used KT for post-injury treatment (74%), pain modulation (67%), and neuro-sensory feedback (60%). Most believed that KT stimulates skin mechanoreceptors (77%), improve local circulation (69%), and modulates pain (60%). Some respondents believed KT only created a placebo effect (40%) and use it for such therapeutic purposes (58%). Most used a standard uncut roll (67%) in black (71%) or beige (66%). Most respondents did not use any specialty pre-cut tape (83%), infused tape (99.54%), or a topical analgesic with tape (65%). The most common tape tension lengths used by respondents were 50% tension (47%) and 25% (25%) tension. Patient reported outcomes (80%) were the most common clinical measures. Most respondents provided skin prep (64%) and tape removal (77%) instructions. Some did not provide any skin prep (36%) or tape removal (23%) instruction. The average recommended times to wear KT were two to three days (60%). The maximum times ranged from two to five days (81%).

CONCLUSION

This survey provides insight into how professionals use KT and highlights the gap between research and practice. Future research should address these gaps to better determine evidence-based guidelines.

Does kinesiotaping can improve static stability of the knee after anterior cruciate ligament rupture? A randomized single-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Background

The aim of the study was the assessment of the early impact of the selected kinesiotaping technique on the static stability of the knee joint in patients with ACL rupture on the basis of stabilographic parameters.

Methods

Sixty-two patients with a complete ACL rupture (32 patients in experimental group and 30 patients in placebo group) took part in the randomized single-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The ligament technique of KT was taken into consideration. Application of a KT tape only on the injured knee was to stabilize the knee joint. Experimental group had application of KT on the injured knee and the placebo group had a KT placebo application (with no tension on KT). Intervention and stabilographic test in both groups was the same.

Research tools included measurements of static stabilographic parameters on stabilometric platform CQStab2P®. Outcome measures were assessed before intervention and after KT application. The analysis included evaluation of outcome variables – total path length, (SP), statokinesiogram path length in the XY axes (SPML, SPAP), and mean velocities in the XY axes (MV, MVML, MVAP).

Results

The results show a statistically significant shortening of the SP, SPAP and SPML variables only in experimental group. In the placebo group the results were not significant. The analysis also showed a significant improvement in all analyzed variables in the experimental group compared to the healthy side. In the placebo group, the results did not improve significantly after KT application compared to the healthy side.

Conclusions

Application o

f KT in patients after ACL rupture shortened the total path length and improved the value of parameters in the frontal and sagittal planes in experimental group, which may suggest the potentially greater improvement in these parameters. By improving the values of the analyzed variables, the KT application is able to compensate for the loss of static stability of the knee.

Effect of Different Kinesio Taping Interventions on the Local Thresholds of Current Perception and Pressure Pain in Healthy Adults

Objective

Previous studies made controversial claims about the alleged effects of Kinesio taping (KT) on pain relief. To date, the mechanism by which KT relieves pain remains unclear. Moreover, pain evaluation lacks objective and quantitative parameters. This study compared the acute effects of different KT interventions on the local thresholds of pressure pain and current perception in healthy adults to determine the potential mechanisms by which KT relieves pain.

Methods

Thirty healthy female subjects randomly received four KT interventions, namely, no taping (NT), placebo taping (PT), Y strips of KT (KY), and fan strips of KT (KF), on the waist. Current perception threshold (CPT), pressure pain threshold (PPT), soft tissue hardness, and the visual analog scale (VAS) scores of the subjects’ perceived pain were immediately measured after taping. Repeated-measures ANOVA was performed to determine significant differences in these parameters among the four interventions.

Results

Significant differences in CPT values among the interventions were observed at the frequency of 5 Hz (F = 3.499, p = 0.019, η_p² = 0.111). Post hoc analysis revealed that CPT was significantly higher for KF than for NT (p = 0.008, 95% CI = 1.390–11.990). Significant differences in PPT values (F = 4.352, p = 0.012, η_p² = 0.130) and soft tissue hardness (F = 2.957, p = 0.049, η_p² = 0.093) were observed among the different taping conditions. Post hoc analysis revealed that PPT was significantly higher for KF than for PT (p = 0.011, 95% CI = 0.071–0.749), and soft tissue hardness was significantly higher for KF than for NT (p = 0.010, 95% CI = 0.461–4.586) and KY (p = 0.040, 95% CI = 0.059–3.800). No significant differences in self-perceived pain among the interventions were observed.

Conclusion

The healthy adult females had higher PPT values, lower soft tissue hardness, and higher CPT values at 5 Hz under KF intervention applied on the waist than those under the other taping interventions. Moreover, the different taping conditions had no significant differences in terms of VAS of perceived pain. These results provide guidance for the application of KT on pain management.

Effects of Kinesio Taping on pain, paresthesia, functional status, and overall health status in patients with symptomatic thoracic outlet syndrome: A single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to assess the effects of kinesio taping (KT) on pain, paresthesia, functional status, and overall health status in patients with symptomatic thoracic outlet syndrome (sTOS).

METHODS

A single-blind placebo-controlled design was employed in this study. The study duration was defined as 12 months. Analyses were performed on 60 patients with sTOS randomly assigned to KT (4 men and 26 women; mean age=33.5 years, range=20-46 years) and control groups (5 men and 25 women; mean age=26 years, range=20-43 years). KT was applied to the KT group three times. The control group received placebo taping. Pain and paresthesia were evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS) pain (10 cm) and VAS paresthesia (10 cm). The upper limb function was assessed using the disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) questionnaire. The overall health status was evaluated based on the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP). Each assessment was carried out at baseline (t0), posttreatment (t1), and 8 weeks after baseline (t2).

RESULTS

In the KT group, except the social isolation domain of the NHP, all outcome measures showed improvement from t0 to t1. At the second follow-up visit (t2), improvements remained visible compared with baseline. However, none of the variables improved from t1 to t2. Otherwise, all measures deteriorated slightly, and the deteriorations in VAS for pain, NHP pain, NHP sleep, and NHP physical abilities were statistically significant (p=0.041, p=0.048, p=0.013, and p=0.016, respectively). In the control group, only VAS for paresthesia and NHP emotional reaction showed improvement over time (p=0.002 and p=0.044, respectively). When changes in outcome measures between the two groups were compared, except NHP emotional reaction and NHP social isolation, median changes (from t0 to t1) were higher in the KT group than in the control group (p<0.05 for all variables). Regarding VAS pain, VAS paresthesia, DASH, and three NHP domains (energy level, pain, and physical abilities), changes from t0 to t2 were also higher in the KT group (p<0.05 for all variables).

CONCLUSION

KT can provide benefits in terms of relieving pain and paresthesia, as well as improving the upper limb function and quality of life in patients with sTOS.

Injuries and Conditions Affecting the Elbow Flexor/Pronator Tendons

Common flexor-pronator tendon injuries and medial epicondylitis can be successfully treated nonoperatively in most cases. Operative treatment is reserved for patients with continued symptoms despite adequate nonoperative treatment or in high-level athletes with complete rupture of the common flexor-pronator tendon. The physical examination and workup of patients with flexor-pronator tendon injuries should focus on related or concomitant pathologies of the medial elbow. The gold standard for surgical treatment of flexor-pronator tendon ruptures or medial epicondylitis includes tendon debridement and reattachment.

The effects of kinesiotaping on wrist extensor strength using an isokinetic device in patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis: A randomized-controlled trial

Objectives

This study aims to evaluate short-term effects of kinesiotaping (KT) on pain, arm function, grip strength, and wrist extensor strength in patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis (LE).

Patients and methods

A total of 48 patients (32 females, 16 males years; mean age 47.6 years; range 27 to 67 years) with chronic LE were randomly assigned to either KT group (n=27) or sham group (n=21). Pain intensity with visual analog sclae (VAS), arm pain and function with Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation Questionnaire (PRTEE), grip strength with hand dynamometer, and wrist extensor strength by an isokinetic device were evaluated before and at the end of the treatment. The KT stayed on for five days and the procedure was repeated for three times.

Results

Although pain and functional levels of patients with chronic LE were significantly improved both with KT (pain, p=0.001; function, p=0.001) and sham groups (pain, p=0.001; function, p=0.001), no significant difference was observed between the groups.

Conclusion

Both KT and sham taping provided similar improvement in pain relief through arm functions in patients with chronic LE.

Immediate Effects of Ankle Balance Taping with Kinesiology Tape for Amateur Soccer Players with Lateral Ankle Sprain: A Randomized Cross-Over Design

Background

The objective of this study was to investigate the immediate effect on gait function when ankle balance taping is applied to amateur soccer players with lateral ankle sprain.

Material/Methods

A cross-over randomized design was used. Twenty-two soccer players with an ankle sprain underwent 3 interventions in a random order. Subjects were randomly assigned to ankle balance taping, placebo taping, and no taping groups. The assessment was performed using the GAITRite portable walkway system, which records the location and timing of each footfall during ambulation.

Results

Significant differences were found in the velocity, step length, stride length, and H-H base support among the 3 different taping methods (p<0.05). The ankle balance taping group showed significantly greater velocity, step length, and stride length in comparison to the placebo and no taping group. The ankle balance taping group showed a statistically significant decrease (p<0.05) in the H-H base support compared to the placebo and no taping groups, and the placebo group showed significantly greater velocity in comparison to the no taping group (p<0.05).

Conclusions

We conclude that ankle balance taping that uses kinesiology tape instantly increased the walking ability of amateur soccer players with lateral ankle sprain. Therefore, ankle balance taping is a useful alternative to prevent and treat ankle sprain of soccer players.

Patient-related risk factors for requiring surgical intervention following a failed injection for the treatment of medial and lateral epicondylitis

OBJECTIVES

To identify risk factors for failure of a therapeutic injection leading to operative management of both medial and lateral epicondylitis.

METHODS

A national database was used to query Medicare Standard Analytic Files from 2005-2012 for patients treated with therapeutic injections for medial or lateral epicondylitis using CPT codes for injections associated with corresponding ICD-9 diagnostic codes (726.31 and 726.32, respectively). Those who subsequently underwent surgical treatment following injection were identified. A multivariate binomial logistic regression analysis was utilized to evaluate patient-related risk factors for requiring surgery within 2 years after therapeutic injection.

RESULTS

1,837 patients received therapeutic injections for medial epicondylitis. 52 (2.8%) required ipsilateral surgery at a mean of 429 ± 28 days post-injection. Risk factors for requiring surgical intervention included age <65, obesity, and morbid obesity. 6,561 patients received therapeutic injections for lateral epicondylitis. 201 (3.1%) required subsequent surgery at a mean of 383 ± 128 days' post-injection. Risk factors included age <65, tobacco use, diabetes mellitus and peripheral vascular disease.

CONCLUSION

The incidence of surgical intervention following a failed therapeutic injection for medial or lateral epicondylitis is low (~3%). Risk factors for failing a therapeutic injection include age <65 years and obesity (BMI > 30) for medial epicondylitis and age <65 years, smoking, diabetes mellitus and peripheral vascular disease for lateral epicondylitis. Patients with these identified risk factors presenting with medial or lateral epicondylitis should be cautioned that they carry a higher risk of subsequent surgical treatment.

Kinesio taping in patients with lateral epicondylitis

BACKGROUND

Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a painful condition that affects the tendinous tissue of the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and leads to loss of function of the affected limb. Therefore it can have a major impact on the patient's social and personal life. Many treatments are recommended for lateral epicondylitis; unfortunately the evidence is limited.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of study was to investigate the effect of kinesio taping (KT) on pain, grip strength and function in patients LE.

METHODS

Thirty-one (23 females, 8 males) patients with LE were included. KT was applied twice a week for 2 weeks. Pain at rest, activity of daily living (ADL), night and palpation on lateral epicondyle was evaluated with the visual analog scale (VAS 0-10 cm), and the grip strength was measured with a hand held dynamometer. The stage of the disease was evaluated by the Nirschl score and the functional status was assessed with Patient-Rated Forearm Evaluation Questionnaire (PRTEQ) score. These parameters were evaluated before, at 2 weeks and 6 weeks after treatment. Patients' satisfaction was also recorded on a Likert scale after treatment at 2 weeks and 6 weeks.

RESULTS

The average age of the patients was 43.58 ± 9.02. The dominant limb was affected in 64.5% (20) of the patients. After the application of KT on lateral epicondyle, there was a significant improvement in all parameters in terms of pain, Nirschl score, hand grip strength, patient satisfaction, and PRTEQ scores at 2 and 6 weeks.

CONCLUSIONS

Kinesio taping can be an effective treatment method in LE. This application improves pain, grip strength and functional status of the patients with LE.

Kinesio Taping for temporomandibular disorders: Single-blind, randomized, controlled trial of effectiveness

BACKGROUND

Data regarding the effectiveness of Kinesio Taping in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is scarce.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the efficacy of Kinesio Taping (KT) in patients with TMD.

METHODS

Patients with TMDs were randomized into experimental and control groups. The experimental group (n= 14) received KT in combination with counseling and jaw exercise, whilst controls (n= 14) were given the regimen of counseling and exercise alone. Jaw movements, Visual analogue scale (VAS) scores and self-reported measures (functional limitation and masticatory efficiency) were evaluated at baseline, first and sixth weeks of the treatment. Biobehavioral questionnaire was filled out at baseline and at sixth week.

RESULTS

Active mouth opening improved more in the experimental group than controls (p= 0.003). In the experimental group, VAS for temporomandibular joint, masticatory efficiency and functional limitation improved significantly at the sixth week when compared to baseline (p= 0.011, p= 0.001 and p= 0.001, respectively), but not in controls. Subjective treatment efficacy was higher in the experimental group than that of controls (p= 0.000). Pain, depression and disability scores reduced significantly in the experimental group (p= 0.001, p= 0.006 and p= 0.01, respectively), but not in controls.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, KT in combination with counseling and exercise is more effective than counseling and exercise alone in TMDs.

Kinesiotaping enhances the rate of force development but not the neuromuscular efficiency of physically active young men

INTRODUCTION

Investigations on the effects of KT on human performance have been increasing in the last few years. However, there is a paucity of studies investigating its effects on neuromuscular efficiency (NME) and rate of force development (RFD).

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the NME and RFD of the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles in physically active individuals under KT application.

METHOD

Twenty young males (79.7±8.2kg; 1.78±0.05m; 24.7±4.4years) performed three conditions in a randomized order: (1) Baseline (BL, no tape); (2) Activation (ACTIKT, tape for muscle activation); and (3) Inhibition (INHIKT, tape for muscle inhibition). The tape was applied along the lateral and medial border of gastrocnemius with 30% tension for 48h. Peak torque (PT), RFD and NME were measured at BL and 48h after ACTIKT and INHIKT by performing a maximum isometric contraction.

RESULTS

The RFD was significantly higher in ACTIKT compared to BL at 0-30 (P=0.010), 0-50 (P=0.008) and 0-100ms (P=0.007). The PT and NME did not differ among conditions (P>0.05).

CONCLUSION

KT applied for muscle activation yielded a higher RFD during the initial phase of the muscle contraction. However, KT has no enhancement effect on NME and peak torque.

Influence of kinesio tape application direction on peak force of biceps brachii muscle: A repeated measurement study

BACKGROUND

According to the kinesio tape (KT) method, proximal-to-distal (P-to-D) application of KT should facilitate muscle activity (increase strength), distal-to- proximal (D-to-P) should decrease muscle activity (decrease strength) and applications in other directions should not influence muscle strength.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the influence of KT application direction on peak force of biceps brachii in healthy subjects.

METHODS

16 students participated in a single group repeated measurements study. KT was applied randomly on both anterior arms as follows: no KT; P-to-D; D-to-P; or two horizontal stripes. Peak force of biceps was measured after each application by a blinded investigator.

RESULTS

No difference in biceps peak force was found after evaluating no KT, P-to-D and D-to-P. After the horizontal application, peak force was found statistically significantly higher than in the other conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

Traditional assumptions of the KT method, suggesting that P-to-D application stimulates muscle and D-to-P relaxes the muscle, seem to be false. However, we do confirm that applying KT in various directions differently effects muscle strength.

Acute Effects of Kinesio Taping on Knee Extensor Peak Torque and Stretch Reflex in Healthy Adults

Kinesio Tex tape (KT) is used to prevent and treat sports-related injuries and to enhance muscle performance. It has been proposed that the direction of taping may either facilitate or inhibit the muscle by having different effects on cutaneous receptors that modulate excitability of the motor neurons. This study had 2 goals. First, we wished to determine if KT application affects muscle performance and if the method of application facilitates or inhibits muscle performance. This was assessed by measuring isokinetic knee extension peak torque in the knee extensor. Second, we assessed neurological effects of taping on the excitability of the motor neurons by measuring the reflex latency and action potential by electromyography (EMG) in the patellar reflex. The study was a single-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial with 28 healthy volunteers with no history of knee injuries. Participants received facilitative KT treatment, inhibitory KT treatment, or Hypafix taping of the knee extensor. There were significant differences in the peak torque between 3 treatments (F(2,54) = 4.873, P < 0.01). Post hoc analysis revealed that facilitative KT treatment resulted in higher knee extensor peak torque performance than inhibitory KT treatment (P = 0.036, effect size 0.26). There were, however, no significant differences in the reflex latency (F(2,54) = 2.84, P = 0.067) nor in the EMG values (F(2,54) = 0.18, P = 0.837) in the patellar reflex between the 3 taping applications. The findings suggest that the direction of KT application over the muscle has specific effects on muscle performance. Given the magnitude of effect is small, interpretation of clinical significance should be considered with caution. The underlying mechanism warrants further investigation.

Kinesio taping of the deltoid does not reduce fatigue induced deficits in shoulder joint position sense

BACKGROUND

Muscle fatigue is known to decrease shoulder proprioceptive acuity, potentially contributing to injuries. It has been suggested that Kinesio taping can improve proprioception. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Kinesio taping on shoulder joint position sense after muscle fatigue.

METHODS

Twenty-four healthy subjects were evaluated in a randomized, crossover, single-blind study design. Shoulder joint position sense was assessed during active repositioning tests at the target angles of 50°, 70° and 90° of arm elevation in scapular plane, in three sessions: control (no taping), Kinesio taping (Kinesio taping applied over the deltoid muscle with tension) and sham (Kinesio taping applied over deltoid without tension). Joint position sense was assessed three times: before taping; following taping application or rest, in the control session; and following a fatigue protocol. The constant error (repositioned angle-target angle) was considered for statistical analysis, using a 3-way repeated-measure ANOVA (within subject factors: taping, time and target angle).

FINDINGS

There was no interaction or main effect involving taping. An interaction between time and angle was found and the simple effect showed that the constant error increased following fatigue at 70° and 90°, but not at 50°.

INTERPRETATION

The results of this study does not support the use of Kinesio taping applied over the deltoid muscle for compensating or preventing shoulder joint position sense deficits caused by muscle fatigue of shoulder abductors.

Effect of two different kinesio taping techniques on knee kinematics and kinetics in young females

[Purpose] The application of kinesio taping may improve strength and performance, inhibit and facilitate motor activity, and increase range of motion. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of kinesio taping facilitation and inhibition applications on spatiotemporal knee kinematics and kinetics during walking activity in healthy subjects. [Subjects and Methods] A three-dimensional quantitative gait evaluation was performed without tape and with, facilitation and inhibition kinesio taping application on the knee. Sixteen healthy female college students (age, 19.7 ± 0.4 years; height, 1.64 ± 3.4 cm; body mass, 51.5 ± 4.8 kg) participated in the study. [Results] Spatiotemporal parameters (cadence, walking speed, stride length) were significantly different among the trials. Knee joint sagittal plane range of motion was not different with either kinesio taping application. Knee external flexion moment during the early stance phase decreased significantly with facilitation kinesio taping and increased with the inhibition kinesio taping. Knee external extension moment during the mid-stance phase increased with facilitation kinesio taping. Knee power parameters, eccentric activity in the rectus femoris during the pre-swing phase was significantly increased with inhibition kinesio taping application, while eccentric activity of the hamstrings during the terminal swing of gait was decreased. [Conclusion] These findings showed that facilitation kinesio taping application affected the terminal stance phase and that inhibition kinesio taping influenced the terminal swing phase compared with the no tape condition.

Kinesiology Taping does not Modify Electromyographic Activity or Muscle Flexibility of Quadriceps Femoris Muscle: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Pilot Study in Healthy Volleyball Players

Background

Kinesiology taping (KT) is a popular method of supporting professional athletes during sports activities, traumatic injury prevention, and physiotherapeutic procedures after a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries. The effectiveness of KT in muscle strength and motor units recruitment is still uncertain. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of KT on surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity and muscle flexibility of the rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), and vastus medialis (VM) muscles in healthy volleyball players.

Material/Methods

Twenty-two healthy volleyball players (8 men and 14 women) were included in the study and randomly assigned to 2 comparative groups: “kinesiology taping” (KT; n=12; age: 22.30±1.88 years; BMI: 22.19±4.00 kg/m²) in which KT application over the RF muscle was used, and “placebo taping” (PT; n=10; age: 21.50±2.07 years; BMI: 22.74±2.67 kg/m²) in which adhesive nonelastic tape over the same muscle was used. All subjects were analyzed for resting sEMG activity of the VL and VM muscles, resting and functional sEMG activity of RF muscle, and muscle flexibility of RF muscle.

Results

No significant differences in muscle flexibility of the RF muscle and sEMG activity of the RF, VL, and VM muscles were registered before and after interventions in both groups, and between the KT and PT groups (p>0.05).

Conclusions

The results show that application of the KT to the RF muscle is not useful to improve sEMG activity.

Effects of Kinesio Taping versus McConnell Taping for Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objectives. To conduct a systematic review comparing the effects of Kinesio taping with McConnell taping as a method of conservative management of patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Methods. MEDLINE, PUBMED, EMBASE, AMED, and the Cochrane Central Register of Control Trials electronic databases were searched through July 2014. Controlled studies evaluating the effects of Kinesio or McConnell taping in PFPS patients were retrieved. Results. Ninety-one articles were selected from the articles that were retrieved from the databases, and 11 articles were included in the analysis. The methods, evaluations, and results of the articles were collected, and the outcomes of patellar tapings were analyzed. Kinesio taping can reduce pain and increase the muscular flexibility of PFPS patients, and McConnell taping also had effect in pain relief and patellar alignment. Meta-analysis showed small effect in pain reduction and motor function improvement and moderate effect in muscle activity change among PFPS patients using Kinesio taping. Conclusions. Kinesio taping technique used for muscles can relieve pain but cannot change patellar alignment, unlike McConnell taping. Both patellar tapings are used differently for PFPS patients and substantially improve muscle activity, motor function, and quality of life.

A scoping review of the use of elastic therapeutic tape for neck or upper extremity conditions

INTRODUCTION

Elastic therapeutic tape is a relatively new intervention for treating a variety of injuries; however, there is little evidence to support its effectiveness for neck or upper extremity conditions.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This scoping review examines current evidence on the recommended application, purpose and effectiveness of elastic therapeutic tape for treating neck or upper extremity conditions.

METHODS

A scoping review was conducted to examine the evidence in 14 peer-reviewed published articles that reported on the use of elastic therapeutic tape for neck or upper extremity conditions.

RESULTS

Six studies reported statistically significant changes to pain with the use of elastic therapeutic tape. Only three studies found statistically significant changes to range of motion.

CONCLUSIONS

Elastic therapeutic tape may play a role in reducing short-term neck and upper extremity pain, however future high quality studies that contribute to the evidence base for its use are needed.

Reliability of 3-Dimensional Measures of Single-Leg Drop Landing Across 3 Institutions: Implications for Multicenter Research for Secondary ACL-Injury Prevention

CONTEXT

Due to the limitations of single-center studies in achieving appropriate sampling with relatively rare disorders, multicenter collaborations have been proposed to achieve desired sampling levels. However, documented reliability of biomechanical data is necessary for multicenter injury-prevention studies and is currently unavailable.

OBJECTIVE

To measure the reliability of 3-dimensional (3D) biomechanical waveforms from kinetic and kinematic variables during a single-leg landing (SLL) performed at 3 separate testing facilities.

DESIGN

Multicenter reliability study.

SETTING

3 laboratories.

PATIENTS

25 female junior varsity and varsity high school volleyball players who visited each facility over a 1-mo period.

INTERVENTION

Subjects were instrumented with 43 reflective markers to record 3D motion as they performed SLLs. During the SLL the athlete balanced on 1 leg, dropped down off of a 31-cm-high box, and landed on the same leg. Kinematic and kinetic data from both legs were processed from 2 trials across the 3 laboratories.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Coefficients of multiple correlations (CMC) were used to statistically compare each joint angle and moment waveform for the first 500 ms of landing.

RESULTS

Average CMC for lower-extremity sagittal-plane motion was excellent between laboratories (hip .98, knee .95, ankle .99). Average CMC for lower-extremity frontal-plane motion was also excellent between laboratories (hip .98, knee .80, ankle .93). Kinetic waveforms were repeatable in each plane of rotation (3-center mean CMC ≥.71), while knee sagittal-plane moments were the most consistent measure across sites (3-center mean CMC ≥.94).

CONCLUSIONS

CMC waveform comparisons were similar relative to the joint measured to previously published reports of between-sessions reliability of sagittal- and frontal-plane biomechanics performed at a single institution. Continued research is needed to further standardize technology and methods to help ensure that highly reliable results can be achieved with multicenter biomechanical screening models.

Effect of kinesiology taping on pain in individuals with musculoskeletal injuries: systematic review and meta-analysis

Kinesiology tape, an elastic tape used by sports medicine clinicians to enhance sports performance in athletes, is purported to facilitate a reduction in pain during physical activity in individuals with orthopedic injuries, but high-quality literature on this topic remains scarce. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to critically examine and review the existing literature to evaluate the effect of kinesiology tape application on pain in individuals with musculoskeletal injury. English-language publications from 2003 to 2013 were surveyed by searching SPORTDiscus, Scopus, ScienceDirect, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and PEDro databases using the terms kinesio tap*, kinesiology tap*, kinesiotap*, and pain. Thirteen articles investigating the effects of kinesiology tape application on pain with at least level II evidence were selected. The combined results of this meta-analysis indicate that kinesiology tape may have limited potential to reduce pain in individuals with musculoskeletal injury; however, depending on the conditions, the reduction in pain may not be clinically meaningful. Kinesiology tape application did not reduce specific pain measures related to musculoskeletal injury above and beyond other modalities compared in the context of included articles. We suggest that kinesiology tape may be used in conjunction with or in place of more traditional therapies, and further research that employs controlled measures compared with kinesiology tape is needed to evaluate efficacy.

Kinesio taping: application and results on pain: systematic review

Kinesio taping is being increasingly used under several conditions; however, its hypoalgesic effect and mechanism of action do not show scientific results. Therefore, the aims of this study were to describe the principles of the method and mainly to analyze the results of clinical trials with control groups, related to pain with Kinesio taping. The PubMed, SciELO, Lilacs, Scirus and Academic Google databases were consulted, using the keywords: Kinesio Taping and Kinesio Tape, either associated or not to pain. Ten clinical trials related to pain and Kinesio taping were selected, assessed by using the PEDro scale, and its results were analyzed. Kinesio taping provided higher, similar or lower pain reduction than in other groups (control, placebo or technique). The application continues to use the principles of Kenzo Kase, the gate control theory being the most described so far to justify the hypoalgesic effect; and the effects were only found in short-term (24 hours to 1 week). Pain relief provided by Kinesio taping was similar or slightly superior to other interventions, not representing a reason for it to be the main treatment of choice. However, it can be considered an adjunct or complementary technique.

The effect of kinesio tape application on hamstring and gastrocnemius muscles in healthy young adults

BACKGROUND

Scarce evidence exists about effectiveness and mechanisms of action of Kinesio tape (KT) application.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effect of KT application over the gastrocnemius or hamstring on range of motion and peak force.

METHODS

Thirty-six physical therapy students participated (18 per group). KT was applied with 30% tension for 48 h to: Group 1 - the gastrocnemius; Group 2 - the hamstrings. The straight leg raise (SLR), knee extension angle (KEA), weight bearing ankle dorsiflexion, gastrocnemius, quadriceps and hamstrings peak forces were evaluated prior to application, 15 min and 48 h after.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

A significant increase of peak force in the gastrocnemius group appeared immediately and two days later; no immediate change of peak force in the hamstrings group, however, two days later, peak force significantly increased. SLR and ankle dorsiflexion increased immediately in the gastrocnemius group; KEA improved significantly only after two days. It is possible that certain muscles react differently when KT is applied, and the effect may be subsequently detected.

Efeito da Kinesio Taping sobre força máxima e resistência de força em padelistas

INTRODUÇÃO: O emprego da Kinesio Taping (KT) em competições esportivas, como tentativa de incrementar o rendimento de atletas de diferentes modalidades, tem aumentado substancialmente. No entanto, poucos são os estudos que investigaram os efeitos desse material no desempenho físico. OBJETIVOS: Avaliar os efeitos da KT na força isométrica máxima de preensão manual (FIPM) e na resistência de força (RF) de praticantes de pádel após realização de um set da modalidade. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Em um estudo contrabalanceado, de medidas repetidas, 14 indivíduos foram submetidos à mensuração de FIPM e RF em três condições distintas: repouso, após um set utilizando a KT e após um set sem utilizar KT. As variáveis foram medidas no hemicorpo dominante, com dinamômetro eletrônico de preensão manual com sujeitos sentados, cotovelo flexionado a 90° firmemente apoiado contra o tronco e antebraço em rotação neutra. Para FIPM, foi analisada a média de três medidas e, para RF, realizou-se cronometragem do tempo em que o sujeito sustentava 70% da FIPM. RESULTADOS: Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre as três condições quanto a FIPM (p = 0,86). Para RF, encontrou-se diminuição significativa para condição sem KT (24,16 ± 12,49 s) quando comparada ao repouso (33,46 ± 14,05, p = 0,01), o que não ocorreu com o emprego da KT (31,01 ± 11,85). CONCLUSÕES: A aplicação da KT reduziu o decréscimo da RF em praticantes de pádel após um set dessa modalidade, mas não exerceu efeito sobre a FM.
