Abstract
BACKGROUND The significance of reinforcement of the duodenal stump with seromuscular sutures and the effectiveness of reinforced staplers in preventing duodenal stump leakage remain unclear. We aimed to explore the importance of duodenal stump reinforcement and determine the optimal reinforcement method for preventing duodenal stump leakage. METHODS This retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2021, with data analyzed between December 1, 2022 and September 30, 2023. This multicenter study across 57 institutes in Japan included 16,475 patients with gastric cancer who underwent radical gastrectomies. Elective open or minimally invasive (laparoscopic or robotic) gastrectomy was performed in patients with gastric cancer. RESULTS Duodenal stump leakage occurred in 153 (0.93%) of 16,475 patients. The proportions of males, patients aged ≥ 75 years, and ≥ pN1 were higher in patients with duodenal stump leakage than in those without duodenal stump leakage. The incidence of duodenal stump leakage was significantly lower in the group treated with reinforcement by seromuscular sutures or using reinforced stapler than in the group without reinforcement (0.72% vs. 1.19%, p = 0.002). Duodenal stump leakage incidence was also significantly lower in high-volume institutions than in low-volume institutions (0.70% vs. 1.65%, p = 0.047). The rate of duodenal stump leakage-related mortality was 7.8% (12/153). In the multivariate analysis, preoperative asthma and duodenal invasion were identified as independent preoperative risk factors for duodenal stump leakage-related mortality. CONCLUSIONS The duodenal stump should be reinforced to prevent duodenal stump leakage after radical gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE Posterior scoliosis fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is considered a highly successful surgery with excellent outcomes. However, especially as many patients "graduate" from their pediatric surgeons, there is the need to quantify the long-term outcomes of such surgeries. METHODS The 2010-2022 Pearldiver M161 dataset was queried for those who were 10 to 18 years old with AIS undergoing PSF with at least 10 years follow-up. Patient characteristics were abstracted. Reoperations were identified based on coding for any subsequent thoracic/lumbar surgery/revision. The 10-year reoperation rate and reasons for reoperation were determined, and multivariate regression was performed to determine risk factors. RESULTS In total, 3,373 AIS PSF patients were identified. Of the study cohort, 324 (9.6%) underwent reoperation within 10-years with an interquartile range for timing of surgery of 81-658 days, of which 29.6% were done for infection. Reoperations were done within the first three months for 152 (46.9% of reoperations), three months to 2 years for 97 (29.9%), and 2 years to 10 years for 74 (22.8%). Based on multivariate regression, need for reoperation was associated with male sex (OR: 1.70), asthma (OR: 1.36) and greater than thirteen segments of instrumentation (OR: 1.48) (p < 0.05 for each) but not age, other comorbidities, or insurance. CONCLUSIONS The current study of a large national AIS PSF population found 9.6% to undergo reoperation in the 10 years following their index operation. Although specifics about the curve pattern could not be determined, the reoperation incidence and correlation with specific risk factors are notable and important for patient counselling.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common procedure for which patient factors are known to affect perioperative outcomes. Asthma has not been specifically considered in this regard, although it is the most common inflammatory airway disease and predisposes to osteoarthritis. METHODS Adult patients undergoing TKA were identified from 2015 to 2021-Q3 M157 PearlDiver data sets. Asthma patients were matched to those without 1:1 based on age, sex, and Elixhauser Comorbidity Index (ECI). The incidence of 90-day adverse events and 5-year revisions were compared using multivariable logistic regression ( P < 0.0023). The matched asthma group was then stratified based on disease severity for analysis of 90-day aggregated (any, severe, and minor) adverse events. RESULTS Among 721,686 TKA patients, asthma was noted for 76,125 (10.5%). Multivariable analysis revealed that patients with asthma were at increased odds of multiple 90-day pulmonary, non-pulmonary, and aggregated adverse events, as well as emergency department visits. Furthermore, patients with asthma had 1.17 times greater odds of 5-year revisions ( P < 0.0001). Upon secondary analysis stratifying asthma by severity, patients with all severity levels of asthma showed elevated odds of adverse events after TKA. These associations increased in odds with increasing severity of asthma. DISCUSSION Over one-tenth of patients undergoing TKA were identified as having asthma, and these patients were at greater odds of numerous pulmonary and non-pulmonary adverse events (a trend that increased with asthma severity), as well as 5-year revisions. Clearly, patients with asthma need specific risk mitigation strategies when considering TKA. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III.

Abstract
Background Postoperative pneumonia (POP) is a hospital acquired pneumonia that occurs >48 hours after tracheal intubation. The diagnosis of POP should be based on clinical and radiological findings within 30 days after surgery. It is a common complication after thoracoscopic surgery for lung cancer patients. However, the specific impact of preoperative comorbidities on the incidence of POP remains unclear. This study aimed to analyze the preoperative data of patients with lung cancer to help surgeons predict the risk of incidence of POP after thoracoscopic lung resection. Methods This study is a prospective study that included patients with lung cancer who were scheduled for thoracoscopic surgery in 1 year. All cases came from two medical centers. Preoperative demographic information, tumor information, preoperative comorbidities, quality of life scores, and incidence of POP were collected. Variables were screened by univariate analysis and multivariate regression. Finally, a prediction model was constructed. A total of 53 preoperative factors were included as candidate predictors. The binary outcome variable was defined as the presence or absence of POP. The incidence of POP was the primary outcome variable. The predictive performance of the model was verified internally through 1,000 iterations of bootstrap resampling. Results A total of 1,229 patients with lung cancer who underwent thoracoscopic surgery were enrolled. In addition, 196 cases (15.95%) had POP; 1,025 (83.40%) patients had comorbid conditions. The total number of comorbidity diagnosed in all samples was 2,929. The prediction model suggested that patients with advanced age, high body mass index (BMI), smoking, poor physical condition, respiratory diseases, diabetes, and neurological diseases were more likely to develop POP. The area under the curve (AUC) and Brier scores were 0.851 and 0.091, respectively. The expected and observed results were in strong agreement, according to the likelihood of POP calibration curve. Conclusions The constructed model is capable of evaluating the probability of POP occurrence in patients with lung cancer. Seven preoperative factors in patients with lung cancer were found to be associated with increased probability of having pneumonia after thoracoscopic lung resection. This model can help predict the incidence of POP after surgery.

Abstract
Asthma remains a common comorbid condition in patients presenting for anesthetic care. As a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway, asthma is known to increase the risk of intraoperative bronchospasm. As the incidence and severity of asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions that alter airway reactivity is increasing, a greater number of patients at risk for perioperative bronchospasm are presenting for anesthetic care. As bronchospasm remains one of the more common intraoperative adverse events, recognizing and mitigating preoperative risk factors and having a pre-determined treatment algorithm for acute events are essential to ensuring effective resolution of this intraoperative emergency. The following article reviews the perioperative care of pediatric patients with asthma, discusses modifiable risk factors for intraoperative bronchospasm, and outlines the differential diagnosis of intraoperative wheezing. Additionally, a treatment algorithm for intraoperative bronchospasm is suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lack of evidence exists related to the incidence of postoperative complications in asthmatic patients following orthognathic surgery. The present study aimed to assess the incidence and risk factors of postoperative complications in asthmatic patients following orthognathic surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted which consisted of two groups of patients i.e., asthmatic and systemically healthy patients, who underwent conventional orthognathic surgical procedures (Le Fort I osteotomy, bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, and genioplasty). The recorded postoperative complications in both groups of patients included infection, relapse, altered facial sensation, temporomandibular joint disorder, respiratory complications, and hemorrhage-related events. The association between baseline variables and complications for identifying the possible risk factors was assessed using bivariate analysis and a logistic regression model. RESULTS A total of 886 patients underwent orthognathic surgery over a period of 6-years. Following the eligibility criteria, 16 patients were recruited in the asthmatic group and 278 patients were systemically healthy. The most common complications in the asthmatic patients were altered sensation (37.5%) followed by TMJ disorder (25.0%) and relapse (18.8%). These patients were associated with an increased risk of relapse (P = 0.048) compared to healthy patients. Following adjustment of baseline variables, increased risk of relapse was still associated with asthma (odds ratio [OR]. = 4.704, P = 0.027). CONCLUSION Asthmatic patients suffer from a significantly higher risk of relapse and need to be closely monitored following orthognathic surgery to ensure a stable outcome. Asthma does not seem to have a significant impact on other postoperative complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Identify risk factors and perioperative morbidity for pediatric patients undergoing septoplasty. METHODS The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric (NSQIP-P) database was retrospectively queried to identify patients who underwent septoplasty (CPT 30520) for a diagnosis of deviated nasal septum (ICD J34.2) from 2018 to 2019. Outcomes analyzed include patient demographics, medical comorbidities, surgical setting, operative characteristics, length of stay, and postoperative outcomes. RESULTS A total of 729 children were identified. Median age at time of surgery was 15.8 years, with most patients (82.8%) >12 years of age; no significant association was identified between age at time of surgery and adverse surgical outcomes. Overall, postoperative complications were uncommon (0.6%), including readmission (0.4%), septic shock (0.1%), and surgical site infection (0.1%). A history of asthma was found to be a significant risk factor for postoperative complications (P = .035) as well as BMI (P = .028). CONCLUSION The 30-day postoperative complications following pediatric septoplasty in children reported in the NSQIP-P database are infrequent. Special considerations regarding young age, complex sinonasal anatomy, and surgical technique remain important features in considering corrective surgery for the pediatric nose and certainly warrant further investigation in subsequent studies.

Abstract
Asthma affects millions of people worldwide and its prevalence is increasing. It is characterized by chronic airway inflammation, airway remodeling, and pathologic bronchoconstriction, and it poses a continuous treatment challenge with very few new therapeutics available. Thus, many asthmatics turn to plant-based complementary products, including ginger, for better symptom control, indicating an unmet need for novel therapies. Previously, we demonstrated that 6-shogaol (6S), the primary bioactive component of ginger, relaxes human airway smooth muscle (hASM) likely by inhibition of phosphodiesterases (PDEs) in the β-adrenergic (cyclic nucleotide PDEs), and muscarinic (phospholipase C, PLC) receptor pathways. However, oral 6S is extensively metabolized and it is unknown if the resulting metabolites remain bioactive. Here, we screened all the known human metabolites of 6S and several metabolite-based synthetic derivatives to better understand their mechanism of action and structure-function relationships. We demonstrate that several metabolites and metabolite-based synthetic derivatives are able to prevent Gq-coupled stimulation of intracellular calcium [Ca2+]i and inositol trisphosphate (IP3) synthesis by inhibiting PLC, similar to the parent compound 6S. We also show that these compounds prevent recontraction of ASM after β-agonist relaxation likely by inhibiting PDEs. Furthermore, they potentiate isoproterenol-induced relaxation. Importantly, moving beyond cell-based assays, metabolites also retain the functional ability to relax Gq-coupled-contractions in upper (human) and lower (murine) airways. The current study indicates that, although oral ginger may be metabolized rapidly, it retains physiological activity through its metabolites. Moreover, we are able to use naturally occurring metabolites as inspiration to develop novel therapeutics for brochoconstrictive diseases.

Abstract
Background The population of uncontrolled asthma patients represents a large therapeutic burden. The PDE3-inhibitor enoximone is a strong and quick bronchodilator and is known to successfully treat life-threatening bronchial asthma (status asthmaticus). Translational mice models showed anti-inflammatory effects when PDE3 was targeted. Methods Here, we investigated the effectiveness of PDE3-inhibitor enoximone as oral treatment for chronic asthma in a real-life off-label setting. Investigational use of PDE3-inhibitor enoximone: 51 outpatients (age 18-77) with chronic asthma were followed using off-label personalized low doses of the PDE3-inhibitor enoximone. Duration of treatment was 2-8 years. Results Four groups could be distinguished as follows: The first group includes patients who use enoximone as an add-on, because it helps them in maintaining a better general wellbeing; they still use their traditional medication (n = 5). The second group consists of patients who use enoximone and were able to phase down their traditional medication without deterioration of their asthma symptoms (n = 11). The third group comprises patients who were able to discontinue their traditional medication and use only enoximone without deterioration of their asthma symptoms (n = 24). The last one has patients who, after having used enoximone for some time, saw their symptoms disappear and now use no medication at all, not even enoximone (n = 11). All patients reported improvement or at least alleviation of their asthma symptoms. All patients reported a better quality of life and greater drug compliance. Conclusion The evaluation shows that PDE3-inhibitor enoximone is a viable alternative for or addition to current asthma therapeutics, as both add-on and stand-alone, considerably reducing the use of LABAs/SABAs/ICS, with no or negligible side effects. Additional studies are advisable.

Abstract
Asthma is one of the commonest respiratory illnesses among elderly patients undergoing surgery. Detailed preoperative assessment, pharmacotherapy and safe anaesthetic measures throughout perioperative period are the keys to decrease complications. Resistance to expiratory airflow results in positive alveolar pressures at the end of expiration, which causes air-trapping and hyperinflation of the lungs and thorax, increased work of breathing, and alteration of respiratory muscle function. This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for systematic review and metanalysis (PRISMA) statement. Search engines like PubMed through HINARI, Cochrane database and Google Scholars were used to find evidences. Low-dose IV ketamine, midazolam, IV lidocaine or combined with salbutamol are recommended to be used as premedication before induction. Propofol, ketamine, halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane are best induction agents and maintenance for asthmatic surgical patients respectively. Among the muscle relaxants, vecuronium is safe for use in asthmatics. In addition, Succinylcholine and pancronium which releases low levels of histamine has been used safely in asthmatics with little morbidity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are the most common form of congenital neck cysts. They may become infected causing dysphagia or respiratory distress. Accordingly, the treatment is always surgical removal. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this article were to examine complications following TGDC excision by surgical specialty, demographics, and comorbid conditions. METHODS A retrospective review of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was performed. Pediatric cases from January 1, 2014 to November 1, 2015 with a current procedure terminology code of 60,280 (excision of TGDC or sinus) were included. Statistical analysis was performed to assess associations between complications and surgical specialty, demographics, and comorbidities. RESULTS Of the 867 cases that met inclusion criteria, the median age was 4 years. There were 448 males (52.3%) and 408 females (47.7%). Thirty-six patients (4.2%) experienced at least one 30-day complication. The most predominant complications were reoperation (19 patients, 2.2%), readmission (18 patients, 2.1%), and surgical site infection (16 patients, 1.9%). There was no statistically significant difference between complications and surgical specialty. In those experiencing a complication, there was a statistically significant difference between males (86.1%) and females (13.9%). Of patients with at least one comorbidity, 36.67% had a complication, while 17.22% did not have a complication. There was also a statistically significant difference in the percentage of patients with a past medical history of asthma between those with at least one complication (16.67%) compared to those without any complications (4.76%). CONCLUSIONS excision is a generally safe procedure across surgical specialties. There is a higher complication rate in males compared to females as well as those with a history of at least one medical comorbidity and those with asthma. The most common 30-day complications are reoperation, readmission, and surgical site infection.

Abstract
Background: The current study sought to determine the incidence of postoperative adverse events (AEs) based on data from the 2006 Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Methods: This retrospective case-control study included patients who experienced postoperative AEs in 387 hospitals throughout Taiwan in 2006. The independent variable was the presence or absence of 10 possible postoperative AEs, as identified by patient safety indicators (PSIs). Results: A total of 17,517 postoperative AEs were identified during the study year. PSI incidence ranged from 0.1/1,000 admissions (obstetric trauma-cesarean section) to 132.6/1,000 admissions (obstetric trauma with instrument). Length of stay (LOS) associated with postoperative AEs ranged from 0.10 days (obstetric trauma with instrument) to 14.06 days (postoperative respiratory failure). Total hospitalization expenditures (THEs) ranged from 363.7 New Taiwan Dollars (obstetric trauma without instrument) to 263,732 NTD (postoperative respiratory failure). Compared to patients without AEs, we determined that the THEs were 2.13 times in cases of postoperative AE and LOS was 1.72 times higher. Conclusions: AEs that occur during hospitalization have a major impact on THEs and LOS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bronchial asthma is the most pervasive chronic disease among children in the United States. Pneumonia, an acute pulmonary disorder, is also quite common, affecting individuals with chronic respiratory conditions. Despite the widespread recognition of bronchial asthma as a common, potentially life-threatening disease, its impact on the risk of serious pulmonary infections such as postoperative pneumonia is under-appreciated. We examined the association of bronchial asthma with postoperative pneumonia in a matched cohort of children who underwent inpatient surgical procedures. METHOD We assembled a propensity score-matched retrospective cohort of children (<18 years of age) who underwent inpatient surgery between 2012 and 2015, in hospitals participating in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. Our primary outcome was the incidence of postoperative pneumonia. We used Fine-Gray sub-distributional hazard regression to estimate the hazard ratio of postoperative pneumonia, while accounting for the competing risk by mortality. RESULTS The unmatched cohort comprised of 93 061 children who met the eligibility criteria, of whom 7.8% (n = 7237) had a preoperative diagnosis of bronchial asthma. The cumulative incidence of pneumonia was 4.5% (95% confidence interval: 2.8%, 8.3%) among children without bronchial asthma and 8.5% (95% confidence interval: 5.8%, 11.8%) among those with bronchial asthma. Throughout the 30-day postoperative period, the risk of pneumonia almost doubled among children with bronchial asthma compared to their nonasthmatic peers (hazard ratio: 1.71; 95% confidence interval: 1.24, 2.35; P = .001). CONCLUSION Children with bronchial asthma had a significantly greater risk of postoperative pneumonia. Further studies are needed to understand the mechanisms underlying these associations and determine if perioperative interventions can mitigate this association.

Abstract
Systemic corticosteroid use to manage uncontrolled asthma and its associated healthcare burden may account for important health-related adverse effects. We conducted a systematic literature review to investigate the real-world extent and burden of systemic corticosteroid use in asthma. We searched MEDLINE and Embase databases to identify English-language articles published in 2010–2017, using search terms for asthma with keywords for oral corticosteroids and systemic corticosteroids. Observational studies, prescription database analyses, economic analyses, and surveys on oral/systemic corticosteroid use in children (>5 yr old), adolescents (12–17 yr old), and adults with asthma were included. We identified and reviewed 387 full-text articles, and our review included data from 139 studies. The included studies were conducted in Europe, North America, and Asia. Overall, oral/systemic corticosteroids were commonly used for asthma management and were more frequently used in patients with severe asthma than in those with milder disease. Long-term oral/systemic corticosteroid use was, in general, less frequent than short-term use. Compared with no use, long-term and repeated short-term oral/systemic corticosteroid use were associated with an increased risk of acute and chronic adverse events, even when doses were comparatively low. Greater oral/systemic corticosteroid exposure was also associated with increased costs and healthcare resource use. This review provides a comprehensive overview of oral/systemic corticosteroid use and associated adverse events for patients with all degrees of asthma severity and exposure duration. We report that oral/systemic corticosteroid use is prevalent in asthma management, and the risks of acute and chronic complications increase with the cumulative oral corticosteroid dosage.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Risk factors associated with various adverse outcomes for patients undergoing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the ankle, and how these risks differ between younger and older patient populations, has not been clearly established. Objective quantitative data may aid physicians in surgical decision making, individualizing postoperative management, and targeting interventions for reducing postoperative comorbidity. The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of and risk factors for adverse postoperative outcomes following ORIF of ankle fractures across patient age groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS Charts of patients age 18 years and older who underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for any closed, non-polytraumatic, non-pilon ankle fracture at a single institution between the years 2008 and 2018 were reviewed. Demographic information, comorbidities, and postoperative outcomes were collected. Relative risks for adverse outcomes were calculated and compared between patients younger than 50 and patients 50 years and older. RESULTS A total of 886 patients were included, 375 (42.3%) of which were over age 50. In both age groups, risk of infection was significantly increased among patients with hypertension, although risk among older patients (RR = 3.52, p = 0.004) was greater than that among younger patients (RR = 2.46, p = 0.017). In patients younger than 50, significant risk of wound dehiscence was associated with tobacco use (RR = 3.39, p = 0.022), substance use (RR = 3.07, p = 0.020), and CHF (RR = 12.77, p < 0.001). Risk of implant failure was significantly increased among younger patients with HIV (RR = 4.33, p = 0.026), CHF (RR = 10.54, p < 0.001), and CKD (RR = 10.54, p < 0.001), and among older patients with HTN (RR = 4.51, p = 0.006), CHF (RR = 5.83, p < 0.001), and tobacco use (RR = 3.82, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION Patients undergoing ORIF of the ankle should be well-informed of the potential risks of surgery as they pertain to specific comorbidities. Multidisciplinary approaches are warranted for appropriate management of patients with multiple comorbidities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES No studies have been specifically conducted on asthma patients undergoing cardiac surgery for assessing mortality and morbidity. Distinct effects of cardiac surgery lead to negative effects on respiratory functions, putting patients with existing lung diseases under an increased risk. We aimed to investigate whether asthma patients are under higher risk for mortality and possible complications after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery than patients without asthma. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included patients who underwent elective CABG surgery at our hospital between November 2014 and November 2015. Patients with a history of asthma were verified with physical examination and spirometric measurements by a single. The asthma group was compared with the controls in terms of mortality and morbidities. RESULTS Asthma patients were extubated later than control patients (p=0.028); however, prolonged intubation (longer than 24 h) frequency was not different (p>0.05). Asthma patients required longer stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) (p=0.003) than controls. The incidence of perioperative asthma exacerbations was significantly lower in patients in whom asthma was previously well-controlled. The incidence of postoperative sibilant rhonchi was lower in patients in whom asthma was under control than in those in whom asthma was partially controlled (p=0.020). CONCLUSION Asthma is associated with longer ICU stay and asthma-related pulmonary complications after CABG surgery. Preoperative evaluation of asthma patients scheduled for CABG surgery requires consideration of the control status of asthma. Studies with more controls are needed to provide further evidence on the topic.

Abstract
Hysterectomy is a common surgery and rarely fatal. Here, we present a case of hysterectomy with postoperative complications, leading to a fatal outcome. The autopsy revealed the cause of death and clinicopathologic correlation suggested multiple lessons for patient safety. Patient safety can be enhanced by appropriate boundaries in the care of physician-patients, proactive monitoring and prompt treatment of postoperative asthma, nasogastric suction for postoperative ileus associated with vomiting, and assessment of the patient situation by a good history and physical examination, going to see the patient in person.

Abstract
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) induces cytokine production and causes postoperative monocytic inflammatory responses, which are associated with patient outcomes. In fact, monocytes regulate immunity through dynamic networks of survival and cellular apoptosis as well as thrombomodulin (TM)-associated differenciiation. Whether CPB affects the plasma level of eotaxin-2, a potent chemoattractant, or stimulates monocyte apoptosis among patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is also unknown. Thus, we aimed to investigate this subject and explored the feasible roles of TM in the phenomena. Firstly, clinical data showed that after CABG surgery, patients with lower plasma eotaxin-2 levels and higher TM expression levels exhibited reduced monocytic apoptosis, compared with that in patients with lower TM expression levels. Subsequently, to explore the hypothesis that eotaxin-2 induces monocytic apoptosis mediation by TM expression, we used in vitro monocytic THP-1 cells. The results indicated that treatment of THP-1 cells with eotaxin-2 markedly increased apoptosis. Knockdown of TM significantly increased, and overexpression of TM significantly reversed eotaxin-2-induced monocyte apoptosis, which was compared with that of only eotaxin-2-treated THP-1 cells. TM may regulate mitochondria-mediated apoptosis by its PI3K/Akt axis signaling pathway, which acts as an extinguisher for p53 and BAX activation, as well as limit further downstream release of cytochrome c and cleavage of caspases 8 and 3; we suggest that TM interacts with the cofilin cytoskeleton, which further supports a role for TM in eotaxin-induced THP-1 cell apoptosis. Based on clinical observation and in vitro study, we conclude that TM expression on monocytes is associated with their apoptosis. The above mechanisms may be relevant to clinical phenomena in which patients exhibiting more monocytic apoptosis are complicated by higher plasma levels of eotaxin-2 and lower TM expression on monocytes after CABG surgery.
