Evaluation of high myopia complications prevention program in university freshmen

Parents' intentions toward preschool children's myopia preventive behaviors: Combining the health belief model and the theory of planned behavior

Objective

This study aimed to develop an integrated model based on the health belief model (HBM) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explore the influencing factors of parents' intentions toward preschool children's myopia preventive behaviors.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted in Minhang District, Shanghai, China in January 2022. One thousand six hundred and twenty-eight parents of preschool children from seven preschools were recruited in the study. A four-part questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic characteristics, HBM variables, TPB variables and parental intentions. This study used exploratory factor analysis to analyze HBM and TPB items. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed to explore the relationship between independent variables and parents' intentions toward preschool children's myopia preventive behaviors.

Results

The final integrative model showed that perceived severity, perceived barriers, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control were associated with parents' intentions toward preschool children's myopia preventive behaviors. In model 1, Child's age was entered as a control variable and explained 0.6% of the variance (F = 7.241, p = 0.007). When the HBM variables were entered in model 2, the proportion of variance increased to 25.4% (F = 73.290, P < 0.001). In model 3, TPB variables were entered and explained 63.2% of the variance (F = 246.076, p < 0.001).

Conclusion

The integrated model of HBM and TPB constructed in this study significantly improved the degree of explanation of parents' intentions toward preschool children's myopia preventive behaviors. Parents' perceived severity, perceived barriers, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control can be prioritized intervention targets for myopia preventive practices in preschool children.

Effects of Parental Involvement in a Preschool-Based Eye Health Intervention Regarding Children's Screen Use in China

In this digital era, young children spend a considerable amount of time looking at telephone, tablet, computer and television screens. However, preventative eye health behavior education could help avoid and relieve asthenopia. The effects of parental influence on their children's eye health behavior through the preschool eye health education intervention program were examined. The Health Belief Model was used to develop parental involvement strategy and eye health curriculum. The study was conducted in a large public preschool with five branches in Beijing, China. A total of 248 parent-child pairs participated in the baseline and follow-up surveys, of which 129 were in the intervention group and 119 were in the comparison group. The generalized estimating equation analysis results indicated that parental involvement in preschool-based eye health intervention on screen uses had positive influence on parents' eye health knowledge, cues to action, and parenting efficacy. The intervention program also had positive effects on the increasing level of children's eye health knowledge, beliefs, cues to action, self-efficacy, and behaviors. The results supported the implementation of a preschool-based eye health intervention program with parental involvement, which could potentially enhance children's and parents' eye health beliefs and practices.

Genotype-phenotype correlation and interaction of 4q25, 15q14 and MIPEP variants with myopia in southern Chinese population

BACKGROUND/AIMS

To determine the association and interaction of genome-wide association study-reported variants for Asian populations with myopia and ocular biometric parameters in southern Chinese population.

METHODS

Totally, 1462 unrelated Han Chinese subjects were recruited with complete ophthalmic examinations, including 1196 myopia and 266 control subjects. A total of nine variants were selected for TaqMan genotyping. The genetic association, joint additive effect and genotype-phenotype correlation were investigated.

RESULTS

The 4q25 variant rs10034228 (p=0.002, OR=0.56) and MIPEP variant rs9318086 (p=0.004, OR=1.62) were found to be significantly associated with myopia as well as different severity of myopia. Moreover, 15q14 variant rs524952 (p=0.015, OR=1.49) also showed mild association with myopia and high myopia. However, there was no significant association of CTNND2, vasoactive intestinal peptide receptor 2 and syntrophin beta 1 variants with myopia. Joint additive analysis revealed that the subjects carrying 6 risk alleles of the 3 associated variants were 10-fold higher risk predisposed to high myopia. Genotype-phenotype correlation analysis revealed that high myopia subjects carrying 4q25 rs10034228 T allele showed thicker central corneal thickness, whereas high myopia subjects carrying 15q14 rs524952 A allele were associated with longer axial length and larger curvature ratio.

CONCLUSION

This study revealed significant association of 4q25, 15q14 and MIPEP variants with myopia and different severity of myopia in southern Chinese population, joint additively enhancing 10-fold of risk predisposing to high myopia. The correlation of these associated variants with axial length and corneal parameters suggests their contribution to the refractive status in high myopia subjects.

Choroidal and peripapillary changes in high myopic eyes with Stickler syndrome

Background

To compare different clinical and Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) features of high myopic eyes with Stickler syndrome (STL) with matched controls.

Methods

Patients with genetically confirmed STL with axial length ≥ 26 mm and controls matched for axial length were included. The following data were obtained from SD-OCT scans and fundus photography: choroidal and retinal thickness (respectively, CT and RT), peripapillary atrophy area (PAA), presence of posterior staphyloma (PS).

Results

Twenty-six eyes of 17 patients with STL and 25 eyes of 19 controls were evaluated. Compared with controls, patients with STL showed a greater CT subfoveally, at 1000 μm from the fovea at both nasal and temporal location, and at 2000 and 3000 μm from the fovea in nasal location (respectively, 188.7±72.8 vs 126.0±88.7 μm, 172.5±77.7 vs 119.3±80.6 μm, 190.1±71.9 vs 134.9±79.7 μm, 141.3±56.0 vs 98.1±68.5 μm, and 110.9±51.0 vs 67.6±50.7 μm, always P< 0.05). Furthermore, patients with STL showed a lower prevalence of PS (11.5% vs 68%, P< 0.001) and a lower PAA (2.2±2.1 vs 5.4±5.8 mm², P=0.03), compared with controls.

Conclusions

This study shows that high myopic patients with STL show a greater CT, a lower PAA and a lower prevalence of PS, compared with controls matched for axial length. These findings could be relevant for the development and progression of myopic maculopathy in patients with STL.

Atropine 0.5% eyedrops for the treatment of children with low myopia: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of atropine 0.5% eyedrops (ATE) for the treatment of children with low myopia (LM).

METHODS

In this study, a total of 126 children with LM were randomly divided into an intervention group (administered 0.5% ATE) and a control group (administered a placebo), with 63 children in each group. The outcome measurements were changes in the spherical equivalent (SE), and axial length (AL), as well as adverse events (AEs).

RESULTS

Compared with placebo, administration of 0.5% ATE led to less progression in LM, as measured by SE, and less increase in AL (P < .01). In addition, no serious AEs occurred in both the groups.

CONCLUSION

About 0.5% ATE was efficacious and safe for controlling myopia in children with LM.
