Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients not only experience symptoms caused by cancer but also suffer from the accompanying psychological pain. Therefore, these patients do not have high quality of life. According to the World Health Organization, the incidence of leukemia in China in 2020 was 5.1/100000, the mortality rate was 3.3/100000, and the prevalence rate was 16.7/100000. Therefore, it is important to examine the influence of comorbid subthreshold depressive symptoms on leukemia patients. AIM To determine the impact of comorbid subthreshold depressive symptoms on cancer-related fatigue and complications in leukemia patients, thereby providing a basis for early diagnosis and treatment in clinical practice. METHODS A questionnaire survey was conducted among leukemia patients admitted to a tertiary hospital in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China, from August 2022 to December 2023. Patients with a score > 16 on the Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders (CCMD-3) and a Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score of 8-17 were classified as the subthreshold depressive group (n = 95), while 100 leukemia patients admitted during the same period were classified as the control group. Data were collected using Epidata 3.1 software, and comparisons were made between the two groups regarding general clinical data, the Piper Fatigue Scale (PFS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Numeric Rating Scale for pain assessment, laboratory indicators, and the occurrence of complications. RESULTS In this survey, 120 leukemia patients with depression were preliminarily screened, 95 patients with subthreshold depression were ultimately selected as the subthreshold depression group, and 100 leukemia patients admitted during the same period were enrolled as the normal group. Comparison of basic clinical data between the two groups revealed no significant differences in age, sex, body mass index, cognitive function, or comorbidity with other chronic diseases. However, there were statistically significant differences in the use of radiotherapy and regular exercise between the two groups (P < 0.05). Comparisons of scales and laboratory indicators revealed no significant differences in albumin or PSQI scores between the two groups, but there were statistically significant differences in pain scores, PSQI scores, PFS scores, hemoglobin levels, and C-reactive protein levels (P < 0.05). Spearman's correlation analysis indicated that cancer-related fatigue was correlated with age, hemoglobin levels, C-reactive protein levels, pain, and regular exercise among leukemia patients with subthreshold depression. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that advanced age, combined radiotherapy, pain, and low hemoglobin levels were risk factors for cancer-related fatigue in leukemia patients with comorbid subthreshold depression, while regular exercise was a protective factor against cancer-related fatigue. Follow-up comparisons revealed a significantly lower overall incidence of complications in the control group (4%) than in the depressive group (24.21%; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Leukemia patients with comorbid subthreshold depressive symptoms experience more severe cancer-related fatigue and a higher incidence of complications. These findings may be related to advanced age, combined radiotherapy, pain, and low hemoglobin levels, while regular exercise may effectively alleviate symptoms.

Abstract
Patients with hematologic malignancies experience high rates of depression. These patients are vulnerable to depression throughout the disease trajectory, from diagnosis to survivorship, and at the end of life. In addition to the distressing nature of depression, it has substantial downstream effects including poor quality of life, increased risk of treatment complications, and worse survival. Therefore, systematic screening for depression and integration of robust psychological interventions for affected patients is crucial. Although depression has been historically studied mostly in patients with solid malignancies, research focusing on patients with hematologic malignancies is growing. In this article, we describe what is known about depression in patients with hematologic malignancies, including its assessment, prevalence, risk factors, and implications. We also describe interventions to ameliorate depression in this population. Future research is needed to test effective and scalable interventions to reduce the burden of depression among patients with blood cancers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental disorders have been reported in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), but studies examining their association with mortality are lacking. METHODS We conducted a population-based study using linked administrative health-care databases from Ontario, Canada. All patients with DLBCL 18 years of age or older treated with rituximab-based therapy between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2017, were identified and followed until March 1, 2020. Mental disorders were defined as either preexisting or postdiagnosis (after lymphoma treatment initiation). Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) between mental disorders and 1-year and all-cause mortality while controlling for covariates. RESULTS We identified 10 299 patients with DLBCL. The median age of the cohort was 67 years; 46% of patients were female, and 28% had a preexisting mental disorder. At 1-year follow-up, 892 (9%) had a postdiagnosis mental disorder, and a total of 2008 (20%) patients died. Preexisting mental disorders were not associated with 1-year mortality (adjusted HR = 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.96 to 1.17, P = .25), but postdiagnosis disorders were (adjusted HR = 1.51, 95% CI = 1.26 to 1.82, P = .0001). During a median follow-up of 5.2 years, 2111 (22%) patients had a postdiagnosis mental disorder, and 4084 (40%) patients died. Both preexisting and postdiagnosis mental disorders were associated with worse all-cause mortality (preexisting adjusted HR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.04 to 1.20, P = .0024; postdiagnosis adjusted HR = 1.63, 95% CI = 1.49 to 1.79, P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS Patients with DLBCL and mental disorders had worse short-term and long-term mortality, particularly those with postdiagnosis mental disorders. Further studies are needed to examine mental health service utilization and factors mediating the relationship between mental disorders and inferior mortality.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Haematological conditions are varied, and every condition presents unique psychosocial challenges to patients and their families. There is a growing body of evidence about high levels of psychological distress, negative impact on outcomes and evidence-based treatments, yet service provision is patchy and demand far exceeds supply. RECENT FINDINGS This article focuses on the major subspecialty areas and associated neuropsychiatric comorbidities - haematological malignancies, issues related to stem cell transplants, haemoglobinopathies and haemophilia. The subsequent sections focus on common psychiatric comorbidities, considerations across the life span and models of care. SUMMARY Anxiety disorders and depression have higher prevalence in people with haematological conditions. The stressors faced by the individual can vary based on their condition and their stage of life. Early diagnosis and integrated management of comorbid psychiatric illness can improve quality of life and clinical outcomes. A stepped care model is recommended to ensure that psychological distress is identified and managed appropriately, and evidence for a collaborative care model is provided.

Abstract
PURPOSE Positive coping mediates improved outcomes from integrated palliative care in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We qualitatively explored patients' coping mechanisms to better understand this relationship. METHODS We enrolled patients with high-risk AML admitted to Duke Hospital's inpatient hematologic malignancy service for intensive chemotherapy. This study is a secondary analysis of previously collected longitudinal qualitative data, with interviews conducted between February 2014 and August 2015. Interviews were coded in NVivo to identify examples of approach-oriented and avoidant coping. RESULTS Patients demonstrated approach-oriented coping in many forms including acceptance, positive reframing, active coping, religious coping, and social coping. Acceptance included accepting their prognosis, the uncertainty of AML, and lifestyle changes due to the disease. Patients exhibited positive reframing by speculating about how their situation could be worse, deriving meaning from their experience, and expressing newfound appreciation for activities previously taken for granted. Social coping involved patients receiving support from their community or care team; however, some expressed guilt for being a "burden" on family. Avoidant coping included denial, behavioral disengagement, and self-blame. Some denied their prognosis, but denial was more commonly demonstrated via patients cognitively distancing themselves from their disease. Much of the behavioral disengagement described by patients was attributed to their symptoms (i.e., lethargy) which prevented patients from maintaining relationships or participating in activities previously enjoyed. CONCLUSION These results demonstrate the diverse and nuanced applications of coping mechanisms amid a recent AML diagnosis. Future research should examine coping in the context of novel low-intensity AML therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health disorders can potentially decrease quality of life and survival in patients with cancer. Little is known about the survival implications of mental health disorders in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We aimed to evaluate the effect of pre-existing depression, anxiety, or both on survival in a US cohort of older patients with DLBCL. METHODS Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare (SEER-Medicare) database, we identified patients aged 67 years or older, diagnosed with DLBCL in the USA between Jan 1, 2001, and Dec 31, 2013. We used billing claims to identify patients with pre-existing depression, anxiety, or both before their DLBCL diagnosis. We compared 5-year overall survival and lymphoma-specific survival between these patients and those without pre-existing depression, anxiety, or both using Cox proportional analyses, adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, including DLBCL stage, extranodal disease, and B symptoms. FINDINGS Among 13 244 patients with DLBCL, 2094 (15·8%) had depression, anxiety, or both disorders; 6988 (52·8%) were female, and 12 468 (94·1%) were White. The median follow-up for the cohort was 2·0 years (IQR 0·4-6·9 years). 5-year overall survival was 27·0% (95% CI 25·1-28·9) for patients with these mental health disorders versus 37·4% (36·5-38·3) for those with no mental health disorder (hazard ratio [HR] 1·37, 95% CI 1·29-1·44). Although survival differences between mental health disorders were modest, those with depression alone had the worst survival compared with no mental health disorder (HR 1·37, 95% CI 1·28-1·47), followed by those with depression and anxiety (1·23, 1·08-1·41), and then anxiety alone (1·17, 1·06-1·29). Individuals with these pre-existing mental health disorders also had lower 5-year lymphoma-specific survival, with depression conferring the greatest effect (1·37, 1·26-1·49) followed by those with depression and anxiety (1·25, 1·07-1·47) and then anxiety alone (1·16, 1·03-1·31). INTERPRETATION Pre-existing depression, anxiety, or both disorders present within 24 months before DLBCL diagnosis, worsens prognosis for patients with DLBCL. Our data underscore the need for universal and systematic mental health screening for this population, as mental health disorders are manageable, and improvements in this prevalent comorbidity might affect lymphoma-specific survival and overall survival. Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence supports that virtual reality (VR)-based meditation interventions may improve anxiety and depression among patients with cancer. However, empirical studies involving patients with acute leukemia during induction chemotherapy are limited. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the effects of VR-based meditation intervention on alleviating anxiety and depression and improving the quality of life among patients with acute leukemia during induction chemotherapy. METHODS This randomized controlled trial recruited 63 patients newly diagnosed with acute leukemia. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (received VR-based meditation for 20 min daily for 14 days) and a control group. Anxiety, depression, and quality of life were measured using the State Anxiety Inventory, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Leukemia Questionnaire, respectively. All outcomes were measured at baseline and post-intervention. RESULTS Compared with patients in the control group, those in the intervention group demonstrated a significantly greater reduction in anxiety (P = .04) and improvement in quality of life (P = .04). However, no significant difference was noted in depression levels between groups (P = .09), although a decreasing trend was observed in the intervention group. CONCLUSION Virtual reality-based meditation intervention effectively alleviated anxiety and improved the quality of life among acute leukemia patients during induction chemotherapy. Future randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are warranted. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE Virtual reality-based meditation can be applied in clinical practice virtually anytime and anywhere to provide a convenient intervention for anxiety reduction for acute leukemia patients during induction chemotherapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Individuals with Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) may have a higher cancer mortality. The purpose of this study was to examine cancer-related mortality among patients with CMDs and verify which cancer types are predominantly involved. METHODS We used the Regional Mental Health Registry of the Emilia-Romagna region, in Northern Italy to identify patients aged ≥ 18 years who received an ICD 9-CM diagnosis of CMDs (i.e., depressive and neurotic disorders) over a 10 year period (2008-2017). Information on cause of death was retrieved from the Regional Cause of Death Registry. Comparisons were made with data from the regional population without CMDs. RESULTS Among 101,487 patients suffering from CMDs (55.7% depression; 44.3% neurotic disorders), 3,087 (37.8%) died from neoplasms. The total standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was 1.82 (95% CI 1.78-1.86) while the SMR for all neoplasms was 2.08 (95% CI 2.01-2.16). Individuals of both genders, with both depressive and neurotic disorders had a higher risk of death from almost all cancers compared with the regional population. CONCLUSION Patients with CMDs have considerably higher cancer mortality risk than the general population. Higher mortality was observed for a broad range of cancers associated with different aetiologies. It is imperative to promote cancer awareness, prevention and treatment for people with CMDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leukemia is a broad term for blood cell cancer. Leukemia is divided into acute or chronic, depending on cell differentiation. Leukemia patients are prone to adverse reactions during chemotherapy, such as anxiety, depression, and even suicide, affecting prognosis. As a nursing model developed by three well-known cognitive psychologists, empathetic nursing with mindfulness cognitive therapy (ENMCT) can effectively reduce anxiety and depression and improve the quality of life in patients with chronic disease.
AIM To explore the effect of ENMCT on cancer-induced fatigue, hope level, and negative emotions in patients with long-term leukemia chemotherapy.
METHODS A total of 103 patients with long-term leukemia chemotherapy diagnosed and treated in our hospital from July 2017 to October 2019 were enrolled and randomly assigned to observation and control groups using the random number table approach. Fifty-one patients in the control group received routine nursing, while 52 patients in the observation group received empathic nursing with mindfulness cognitive therapy. After three months of nursing care, cancer-induced fatigue was measured with the Piper Fatigue Scale (PFS), hope level with the Herth Hope Index (HHI), and negative emotion with the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA)/Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD). Self-management (Chinese Strategies Used by People to Promote Health) was also recorded.
RESULTS The observation group’s total scores in behavior, cognition, emotion, feeling, and PFS were lower than the control group after the intervention (P < 0.05). Keeping close contact with others, the attitude of taking positive actions, the attitude toward reality and future, and the total HHI score were higher in the observation group than the control group (P < 0.05). The observation group’s HAMA and HAMD scores were lower than the control group (P < 0.05). The observation group’s positive attitude, self-decision, and self-relief scores were greater than the control group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION Empathetic nursing with cognitive mindfulness therapy is beneficial in improving cancer-related fatigue, negative emotions, expectation level, and self-management ability in patients with long-term leukemia chemotherapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our study aimed to investigate the level of depression, anxiety, and fatigue in patients with leukemias, and analyze the influence of sleep duration on the mental symptoms of patients with leukemias. METHODS A total of 127 patients were enrolled in our study and completed the questionnaire survey. Self-Assessment Depression Scale (SDS), Self-Assessment Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Fatigue Scale-14 (FS-14) were adopted. The patient's lifestyle information, including exercise, alcohol abuse, and smoking, was obtained from the patient's self-report. RESULTS Depression score of patients with sleep duration >8 hours (long duration group) was 56.21±11.63, which was significantly lower than that of patients sleep duration between 6 and 8 hours (medium duration group) with 59.61±8.77 and patients sleep <6 hours (short duration group) with 64.82±6.42 (P = 0.007). Similarly, the anxiety score of long duration group, medium duration group and short duration group was 45.36±11.41, 48.26±6.96 and 53.53±5.87, respectively (P = 0.005). The fatigue score of short duration group is 8.47±2.45, which is higher than others (P = 0.046). To further identify the relationship, we evaluated physical fatigue and mental fatigue levels in patients with or without symptoms of depression. We found that patients with symptoms of depression have a higher score both in physical fatigue and mental fatigue (all p < 0.001). Similar trend was observed in patients with or without symptoms of anxiety (all p < 0.001). However, alzhough patients with leukemia in long duration group have the highest score of physical fatigue (p = 0.016), no significant difference in mental fatigue was found in different sleeping duration group (p = 0.587). Furthermore, multivariate analyses were conducted and revealed that sleep duration was the independent factor associated with depression (OR = 0.270, P = 0.003) and anxiety (OR = 0.473, P = 0.010). CONCLUSION For leukemia patients with short sleep duration, a prompt evaluation of their level of depression, anxiety, and fatigue and the initiation of timely interventions is essential.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) survivors face unique challenges affecting long-term outcomes and quality of life. There is scant literature on the long-term impact of AML treatment in physical and mental health, disease recurrence, and financial burden in survivors. RECENT FINDINGS Fatigue, mental health concerns, infections, sexual dysfunction, and increase cancer recurrence occur after AML treatment. Chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and infections are common concerns in AML after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT). Survivorship guidelines encompass symptoms and complications but fail to provide an individualized care plan for AML survivors. Studies in patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are sparse. Here we discuss the most common aspects pertaining to AML survivorship, late complications, care delivery, prevention of disease recurrence, and potential areas for implementation.

Abstract
Several psychotropic drugs can cause cytopenia, especially after increasing dosages or initiating treatment. However, cytopenia in patients with psychiatric disorders can also be due to other conditions such as leukemia. In this report, we discuss two cases of cytopenia that occurred during the adjustment of psychotropic medications in patients with severe psychiatric illness. The initial diagnosis in each case was drug-induced cytopenia; however, later, the cause of cytopenia was found to be acute promyelocytic leukemia. When cytopenia is observed while increasing the dosage of psychotropic drugs, suspicious drugs should be discontinued, though the possibility that cytopenia could be due to other reasons should be considered. If there are no signs of recovering blood cells or if cytopenia is severe, psychiatrists should consult hematologists promptly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to assess the extent to which pretreatment depression or depressive symptoms are related to prognosis in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). METHODS Medline, EMbase, Scopus, and The Cochrane Library databases were searched. A meta-analysis was done to generate a forest plot and pooled hazard ratio (HR) with 95% CI for overall survival (OS). RevMan 5.3 and Meta Essentials were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Based on seven studies involving 1743 patients, the results showed that HNC patients with pretreatment depression or depressive symptoms had worse OS than patients without depression or depressive symptoms, with an HR of 1.33, 95% CI 1.16-1.52, p = <0.0001. There is heterogeneity in the pooled summary effect (I2 = 80%, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Pretreatment depression or depressive symptoms may indicate worse OS in patients with HNC. The pooled analysis demonstrated a statistically significant effect. These results were limited by mild heterogeneity.

Abstract
Our study aimed to detect the longitudinal prevalence of anxiety and depression in prostate cancer survivors post-resection and their risk factors. A total of 169 prostate cancer patients who underwent resection were included and followed up for 3 years. Then anxiety and depression were assessed by Zung's Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) or Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) from the day of discharging from hospital to the last follow up every 3 months. Overall survival (OS) was calculated and documented. In prostate cancer survivors post-resection, the SAS score, anxiety occurrence rate, SDS score and depression occurrence rate all gradually elevated from baseline to month 36. Multivariate logistic regression analysis disclosed that age ≥ 65 years, education duration<9 years, marry status of single/divorced/widowed, unemployment before surgery, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, higher Gleason score, higher pathological T stage, higher pathological N stage, positive surgical margin status were independent factors related to higher anxiety risk in the 3 years follow-up duration. Additionally, unemployment before surgery, hyperlipidemia, higher pathological T stage, higher pathological N stage, positive surgical margin status were independently associated with depression risk in the 3 years follow-up duration. In addition, baseline anxiety, baseline depression, 1-year depression and 2-year depression associated with worse OS. In conclusion, post-resection anxiety and depression continuously worsen in prostate cancer survivors, and age, marriage status, education duration, complications, and tumor features can serve as their risk factors.

Abstract
Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a common malignancy in adults. A vast variety of environmental and lifestyle factors play a role in AML incidence. This study aimed to assess the factors related to AML.
Study design: A case-control study.
Methods: This case-control study was performed on 137 AML cases during 2018-2021 at Beheshti Hospital in Hamadan, Iran, and 137 gender/age-matched controls. A questionnaire including 12 items was used to obtain information about lifestyle and environmental factors. A univariate and multiple variate logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (OR), and a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to investigate the relationship between the studied variables and the incidence of AML.
Results: Based on findings, 62 (45.3%) out of the 137 leukemic cases were male and 75 (4.7%) were females. A statistically significant increased risk for AML was found with regard to prior usage of cytotoxic agents (OR: 8.00, 95% CI: 1.01, 63.9, P=0.050), family history of malignancies (OR: 3.62, 95% CI: 1.65, 7.92, P=0.001), exposure to electrical power (OR: 3.22, 95% CI: 1.52, 6.81, P=0.002), and history of mental diseases (OR: 8.50, 95% CI: 3.64, 19.80, P=0.001). It was found that the AML incidence had no association with age, gender, radiation therapy, cigarette smoking, prior chemotherapy, congenital disorders, exposure to chemical agents, history of infectious mononucleosis, exercise, and blood transfusion (P>0.05).
Conclusion: The current results suggested that cytotoxic agents, family history of malignancy, mental disorders, and exposure to electrical power could play a role in AML incidence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the effectiveness of personalized health education care in the nursing of patients with acute leukemia. METHODS A total of 108 patients with leukemia who were admitted to our hospital were randomly selected as research subjects. A random number table was used to allocate the patients into the observation group and the control group, with 54 patients in each group. The control group had routine health education care and the observation group received personalized health education care in addition to treatment given to the control group. The knowledge of leukemia, bad moods, adverse reaction and nursing satisfaction were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The observation group had better knowledge of leukemia and nursing satisfaction than the control group, and the incidence of bad moods (anxiety, depression) and adverse reactions were lower than that in the control group (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION The application of personalized health education in the nursing of acute leukemia patients was significant, which improved the knowledge of acute leukemia, reduced the incidence of bad moods and adverse reactions, and improved nursing satisfaction.

Abstract
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematologic malignancy with poor prognosis and overall survival. Clinical investigations show that chronic stress is commonly present in the course of AML and associated with adverse outcome. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are elusive. In the present study, a chronic restraint stress mouse model was established to evaluate the effect of stress on AML. We found that mice under chronic stress exhibited significantly increased liver and spleen infiltration of leukemic cells and poorer overall survival. This was accompanied by elevated cellular NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in the liver or bone marrow, and secreted IL-1β in the plasma, indicating the activation of inflammasomes under chronic restraint stress. High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) expression was markedly increased in newly diagnosed AML patients, but reduced in complete remission AML patients. The expression level of HMGB1 was positively correlated with NLRP3 mRNA in AML patients. Knockdown of HMGB1 significantly decreased NLRP3 and IL-1β expression in AML cell lines, and secreted IL-1β in supernatant of AML cell culture, while HMGB1 stimulation caused contrary effects. These results implied that HMGB1 could be involved in the regulation of inflammasome activation in AML development. Mice model showed that chronic restraint stress-facilitated proliferation and infiltration of AML cells were largely abrogated by knocking down HMGB1. Knockdown of HMGB1 also ameliorated overall survival and remarkably neutralized NLRP3 and IL-1β expression under chronic restraint stress. These findings provide evidences that chronic stress promotes AML progression via HMGB1/NLRP3/IL-1β dependent mechanism, suggesting that HMGB1 is a potential therapeutic target for AML. KEY MESSAGES: • Chronic restraint stress promoted acute myeloid leukemia (AML) progression and mediated NLRP3 inflammasome activation in xenograft mice. • HMGB1 mediated NLRP3 inflammasome activation in AML cells. • Knockdown of HMGB1 inhibited AML progression under chronic stress in vivo.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the anxiety, depression and explore their relationship to quality of life (QoL) among adult acute leukemia (AL) patients and family caregivers (FCs) in China. METHODS A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted from April 2017 to January 2018. The sample comprised 207 dyads of adult AL patients and FCs. The participants were required to complete socio-demographic information and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Leukemia (FACT-Leu, only for patients) and MOS 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36, only for FCs) were used to measure QoL. RESULTS The mean scores of anxiety and depression for AL patients were 7.89 ± 3.85 and 7.18 ± 4.23, respectively. For FCs, the mean scores of anxiety and depression were 9.96 ± 3.73 and 8.64 ± 3.74. In this study, adult AL Patients' sex, patients' depression score, whether patients achieving a CR or not, education, FCs' depression score, patients' social/family well-being and emotional well-being were significantly associated with patients' anxiety or depression (p < 0.05). For FCs, depression was significantly related to the physical component summary (β = 0.127, p = 0.008). There were significant differences in anxiety (t = - 5.92, p < 0.001) and depression (t = - 4.19, p < 0.001) between patients and FCs. CONCLUSIONS AL patients' FCs showed higher score of anxiety and depression than that of patients. The psychological health may have a potential relationship between AL patients and their FCs. Healthcare professionals can conduct family-center interventions to improve mental health and QoL of AL patients and FCs.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a costly disease, and its impact is greater in developing countries (DC). We will review the current concept of what are DC, compare the differences in the epidemiology and economic burden of this disease between developed and DC, and finally, analyze the barriers and possible solutions that DC should implement to achieve better results. RECENT FINDINGS DC is a frequently misunderstood name. The way we use to measure human development is changing, and multidimension metrics better define what are DC. With this in mind, we show the differences in the AML epidemiology and the impact of economic burden in DC. We analyze the barriers to access therapy from a clinician point of view, to show that most DC shared similar challenges but with a diverse healthcare structure. Finally, we provide several possible solutions for a more integrated and timely treatment that allows better results not only in terms of survival but with a better quality of life. The economic burden of AML treatment in DC is high, and the results are poor. It is crucial to face this challenge and propose new treatment approaches to achieve better results.

Abstract
Outcomes of the treatment of older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are unsatisfactory due to a higher incidence of negative patient- and disease-related risk factors connected with aging. Prediction of poor tolerance to aggressive treatment and low response to standard intensive chemotherapy are the main root causes why the treatment decision is challenging. For a long time, negative prognostic factors for treatment outcomes, overall survival, and early death such as the age itself, low-performance status, high-comorbidity burden, adverse cytogenetics, and secondary AML have been known, and they are routinely taken into account during therapeutic balance. In consideration of the risk factors and specific laboratory results, prognostic models have been created. Despite the abovementioned facts, the survival of older patients with AML remains very poor, that holds true even for the intensive therapy. For that reason, there is an increased effort to find a better approach how to select patients who would benefit from intensive treatment without decreasing their quality of life through severe complications with risk of high treatment-related mortality. Based on the results of clinical studies, the geriatric assessment could be the missing step which would help select older patients who are really fit for intensive treatment and who will benefit from it the most. This review focuses on the risk factors that should be taken under advisement when the decision about the treatment is made. With reference to the published information, we propose an algorithm how to identify fit, vulnerable, and frail patients.
