Abstract
Mohs micrographic surgery is the gold standard for treating many types of skin cancer, particularly skin cancers of high-risk areas such as the face, genitalia, and digits, due to its tissue-sparing technique and low recurrence rates. The use of Mohs micrographic surgery for human papilloma virus-associated cutaneous malignancies has yet to be explored in a systematic review. The authors sought to assess outcomes including recurrence rates of Mohs micrographic surgery for human papilloma virus-associated cutaneous malignancies. PubMed was searched for the use of Mohs micrographic surgery in types of human papilloma virus-associated cutaneous malignancies. After application of exclusion and inclusion criteria, 33 articles were included. 700 cases from 33 studies were included. Overall recurrence rate following Mohs micrographic surgery was 39/478 (8.2%) at a mean follow-up time of 51.5 months. Recurrence rate for nail unit/digit squamous cell carcinoma was 10/103 (9.7%) at mean follow-up of 47.6 months. Recurrence rate for penile squamous cell carcinoma was 15/181 (8.3%) at mean follow-up of 45.9 months. Recurrence rate for Bowen's disease in extragenital areas was 11/189 (5.9%) at mean follow-up of 59.7 months. Patients overall reported satisfactory functional and cosmetic results. Mohs micrographic surgery demonstrates low recurrence rates and excellent functional and cosmetic outcomes in the treatment of human papilloma virus-associated cutaneous malignancies.

Abstract
Due to the growth in the number of patients and the complexity involved in anticancer therapies, new therapeutic approaches are urgent and necessary. In this context, compounds containing the selenium atom can be employed in developing new medicines due to their potential therapeutic efficacy and unique modes of action. Furthermore, tellurium, a previously unknown element, has emerged as a promising possibility in chalcogen-containing compounds. In this study, 13 target compounds (9a-i, 10a-c, and 11) were effectively synthesized as potential anticancer agents, employing a CuI-catalyzed Csp-chalcogen bond formation procedure. The developed methodology yielded excellent results, ranging from 30 to 85%, and the compounds were carefully characterized. Eight of these compounds showed promise as potential therapeutic drugs due to their high yields and remarkable selectivity against SCC-9 cells (squamous cell carcinoma). Compound 10a, in particular, demonstrated exceptional selectivity, making it an excellent choice for cancer cell targeting while sparing healthy cells. Furthermore, complementing in silico and molecular docking studies shed light on their physical features and putative modes of action. This research highlights the potential of these compounds in anticancer treatments and lays the way for future drug development efforts.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To summarize the recent literature on epidemiology, clinical findings, treatment, and survival of laryngeal verrucous cell carcinoma (LVC). RECENT FINDINGS Epidemiological studies report that LVC accounts for 1-3% of all laryngeal cancers. The incidence is decreasing, while most patients are male individuals and smokers. LVC are commonly detected in early stages because they are more frequently located in the glottic region. Tobacco, alcohol overuse, and, possibly, human papilloma virus are the main contributing factors. Recent studies confirm that surgery is the primary therapeutic approach with better prognosis when compared with other treatment modalities. Surgery alone is associated with 86.8% disease-free and 80.3% overall survival rates, while metastases are anecdotal. SUMMARY LVC presents different clinical, pathological, and survival outcomes when compared with the classic laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Biopsies need often to be repeated before getting the most appropriate diagnosis; this supports the need of large-sample biopsy during the tumor diagnosis and staging. The glottic location of most LVC leads to detection of this lesion in its early stages, with ensuing better survival and outcomes after surgery compared with the classic form of squamous cell carcinoma. Future studies are needed to understand the biology of LVC and its related better prognostic outcomes when compared to other laryngeal malignancies.

Abstract
Conventional obturator prostheses might cause dissatisfaction in patients with hard or soft palate defects due to inadequate retention and function during speech, mastication, and swallowing. Thus, surgical reconstruction and implant-supported obturators are considered as alternative treatments for these patients. This case-report study describes the prosthetic reconstruction of an 88-year-old patient suffering from a hard palate defect after surgical resection of verrucous carcinoma in the left side of the hard palate. Fifteen months after radiotherapy, two implants were placed in the right side of the remaining ridge, in the second and third molar region. After the implant healing period, the implant-supported obturator prosthesis was fabricated. The patient was satisfied with the esthetics and function of the obturator at the 12-month recall visit and radiographs showed normal healing and no bone loss around the implants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate epidemiological, clinical and oncological outcomes of patients with laryngeal verrucous carcinomas (LVC). METHODS Two independent authors investigated PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library for studies dedicated to epidemiological, clinical and oncological outcomes of patients with LVC. The following outcomes were investigated with PRISMA criteria: age; gender; tobacco/alcohol consumption; HPV infection; anatomical, pathological, therapeutic and survival outcomes. Studies were analyzed for bias through a validated clinical tool. RESULTS Of the 212 identified articles, 15 retrospective studies and one prospective uncontrolled study met our inclusion criteria. Three studies reported findings from national databases. The males/females ratio is 9/1. Mean age was 60.3 years, which was younger compared to other laryngeal malignancies. The alcohol, cigarette overuse and the HPV status of patients were lacking in most studies. Glottis and supraglottis were the most common anatomical locations, corresponding to 78.7% and 12.4% of cases, respectively. The main therapeutic approaches consisted of surgery, radiotherapy, surgery followed by radiotherapy. Treatments reported 5-year overall survival and disease-specific survival of 86.3 and 90.8, respectively. The 5- and 10-year local control rate were 83.6 and 72.6, respectively. The 10-year disease-specific survival was 80.2. Heterogeneity between studies was found for inclusion criteria, comorbidity data, and treatments. CONCLUSION LVC is a rare laryngeal cancer associated with better survival and recurrence outcomes than laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. The role of radiotherapy in the treatment regimen needs to be investigated in future prospective controlled studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has high morbidity and mortality rates while oral verrucous carcinoma (OVC), an uncommon variant of OSCC, exhibits a distinct biological behavior. CLIC4 protein plays a role in the cell cycle and apoptosis regulation and participates in the myofibroblasts transdifferentiation process, which are the main cells of the tumor stroma. This study analyzed the immunoexpression of CLIC4 and α-SMA in 20 OSCC cases and 15 OVC cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS A semiquantitative analysis of CLIC4 and α-SMA immunoexpression was performed in the parenchyma and stroma. Nuclear and cytoplasmic reactivity was analyzed separately for the CLIC4 immunostaining. The data were submitted to Pearson's chi-square and Spearman's correlation tests (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS In the CLIC4 analysis, there was a significant difference in the immunoexpression of this protein between OSCC and OVC stroma (p < 0.001). It was observed a higher expression of α-SMA in the OSCC stroma. There was a positive and significant correlation between CLIC4 and α-SMA immunoexpression in the OVC stroma (r = 0,612; p = 0,015). CONCLUSIONS The decrease or absence of nuclear CLIC4 immunoexpression in the neoplastic epithelial cells and the increase of its expression in the stroma may influence the difference in biological behavior between OSCC and OVC.

Abstract
Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) is a globally rare cancer that includes a variety of tumors affecting the upper aerodigestive tract. It presents with difficulty breathing or swallowing and is mainly treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgery for tumors that have spread locally or throughout the body. Alternatively, exercise can be used during cancer treatment to improve function, including pain relief, increase range of motion and muscle strength, and reduce cancer-related fatigue, thereby enhancing quality of life. Although existing evidence suggests the adjunctive use of exercise in other cancer types, no previous studies have examined the effects on HNC survivors. The aim of this meta-analysis was to quantify the effect of exercise-based rehabilitation on functionality and quality of life in HNC survivors who underwent surgery and/or chemoradiotherapy. A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out following PRISMA statement and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023390300). The search was performed in MEDLINE (PubMED), Cochrane Library, CINAHL and Web of Science (WOS) databases from inception to 31st December 2022 using the terms "cancer", "head and neck neoplasms", "exercise", "rehabilitation", "complications", "muscle contraction", "muscle stretching exercises" combining with booleans "AND"/"OR". PEDro scale, Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool and GRADE were used to assess methodological quality, risk of bias and grade of recommendation of included studies respectively. 18 studies (n = 1322) were finally included which 1039 (78.6%) were men and 283 (21.4%) were women. In patients who underwent radio-chemotherapy, overall pain [SMD = - 0.62 [- 4.07, 2.83] CI 95%, Z = 0.35, p = 0.72] and OP [SMD = - 0.07 [- 0.62, 0.48] CI 95%, Z = 0.25, p = 0.81] were slightly reduced with exercise in comparison to controls. Besides, lower limb muscle strength [SMD = - 0.10 [- 1.52, 1.32] CI 95%, Z = 0.14, p = 0.89] and fatigue [SMD = - 0.51 [- 0.97, - 0.057] CI 95%, Z = 2.15, p < 0.01] were also improved in those who receive radio-chemoradiation. In HNC survivors treated with neck dissection surgery, exercise was superior to controls in overall pain [SMD = - 1.04 [- 3.31, 1.23] CI 95%, Z = 0.90, p = 0.37] and, in mid-term, on shoulder pain SMD = - 2.81 [- 7.06, 1.43] CI 95%, Z = 1.76, p = 0.08]. No differences in quality of life were found at any of the follow-up periods. There is evidence of fair to good methodological quality, low to moderate risk of bias, and weak recommendations supporting the use of exercise-based rehabilitation to increase functionality. However, no evidence was found in favor of the use of this modality for improving the quality of life of HNC survivors who underwent chemoradiotherapy or surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) with distant metastasis (DM) has poor prognosis. HNSCC has several histological variants with varying characteristics. We investigated the DM rates and prognoses of patients with DM among the HNSCC variants. METHODS We obtained data from 54 722 cases using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Odds ratios (ORs) for DM and hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS) were estimated using a logistic regression model and a Cox proportional hazard model, respectively. RESULTS DM rate was the lowest in verrucous carcinoma and the highest in basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) (0.2% and 9.4%, respectively). ORs for DM were 3.63 for adenosquamous carcinoma, 6.80 for BSCC, and 3.91 for spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC). SpCC was significantly associated with a poor OS (HR, 1.61). CONCLUSIONS DM rates differed among the HNSCC variants. The prognosis of metastatic SpCC is worse than that of other metastatic HNSCCs.

Abstract
Verrucous carcinoma (VC) is a relatively rare locally aggressive, slow-growing, well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma with minimal metastatic potential and is most frequent in the mucosa. Although rarely reported on the skin, cutaneous verrucous carcinomas (CVC) can appear anywhere, most commonly on the feet. However, clinical and pathologic diagnosis of CVC has been confusing and challenging. It can easily be mistaken for benign or more malignant conditions such as giant condyloma acuminata, keratoacanthoma, and pseudoepithelioma-like hyperplasia or squamous cell carcinoma, resulting in inappropriate management. In this review, we describe the different aspects associated with CVC, including its pathogenesis and clinicopathologic features. The available evidence for the differential diagnosis and treatment of CVC is discussed, and specific management recommendations are made. After the treatment, careful follow-up examinations of the excised area should be performed at regular intervals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common histological type of laryngeal cancer. Several variants of SCC have been reported. However, how these variants differ from conventional SCC and how they should be treated remain to be elucidated. OBJECTIVE To compare the prognosis of early-stage glottic cancer among SCC variants. METHODS We obtained data from 12471 cases using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS) rates were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. A Cox proportional hazard model was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) according to the variants. RESULTS HRs for DSS and OS compared with well-differentiated SCC were 3.83 and 3.48 for adenosquamous, 1.42 and 1.42 for basaloid, 1.14 and 1.17 for papillary, 0.85 and 0.94 for spindle, and 0.81 and 1.00 for verrucous SCC. The difference in DSS among the treatment modalities was significant in conventional and papillary SCC (p < .001 and p = .032, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The prognosis of SCC variants, except for adenosquamous SCC, is comparable to that of conventional SCC.

Abstract
Background The objective of this study is to provide a structured protocol for the treatment of verrucous carcinoma (VC) based on size, bone invasion, recurrence and whether neck dissection is necessary or not. In addition, the study evaluates the probability of a wrong histopathological diagnosis. Data Sources A search was conducted in the Cochrane Library, PubMed and Google from January 1962 to October 2022 by using MeSH terms and keywords. Studies reporting treatment modalities for VC and different histopathological diagnoses after excision of the lesion were selected except case reports and review articles. Study Eligibility Criteria Thirteen articles were selected. Six hundred and thirty cases of VC were treated by surgery, surgery + neck dissection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and combination therapy. Statistical analysis revealed surgical treatment as a preferred option. Despite being enlarged, the lymph node was negative for metastasis. So, in OVC cases neck dissection adds only unnecessary morbidity to patients. Participants and Interventions Radiotherapy or chemotherapy can be used to downstage the disease. 23.3% of cases reported wrong histopathology diagnosis. Study Appraisal and Synthesis Methods Patients treated for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) will only experience unnecessary morbidity unless the correct diagnosis is made between VC and hybrid VC. Irrespective of size VC does not metastasise until there are no foci of SCC. Conclusions Surgical excision of T1- and T2-sized lesions can be performed under local anaesthetic as a biopsy procedure. T3 or T4 lesion can be resected with a safe margin. If it comes as hybrid VC or VC with close margin (0.5 cm, <0.5 cm), neck dissection and further margin should be excised as a second procedure respectively.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although a trained eye can easily identify typical skin lesions, histopathological examination and clinicopathological correlation are critical in challenging cases. OBJECTIVES The primary objective is to organize the final diagnoses reached following clinicopathological consensus in clinically challenging cutaneous lesions, identifying the most common diagnostic scenarios encountered by dermatopathologists and discussing their diverse differentials submitted by clinicians. The secondary objective is to investigate how the case profile and clinician decision-making processes evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Skin and mucosa samples collected by the dermatology department between 2016 and 2020 were classified based on pathology reports. For frequent diagnoses, preliminary diagnoses stated by clinicians on pathology requisition forms were reviewed. The years preceding and following the first nationally reported COVID-19 case were compared to investigate the pandemic's impact on the distribution of dermatology and dermatopathology cases. RESULTS One thousand nine hundred and eighty-nine reports were classified into 4 major categories: inflammatory (49.8%), neoplastic (30.1%), other diseases (7.1%), and non-diagnostic (12.8%). We further classified inflammatory diseases based on major tissue reaction patterns and neoplasms based on cell origin. We analyzed the leading diagnoses in each category, discussed their differential diagnoses, and provided clinicians with clues to reduce errors in practice. Following the pandemic, the overall number of pathology reports and patient admissions dropped dramatically, with significant changes in case profiles. CONCLUSIONS We presented and discussed the frequently encountered confounding cases to sketch the diagnostic landscape. In the authors' experience, clinicopathological correlation can increase the rate of reaching the diagnosis by up to 75.3%.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a rampant cancer type in head and neck cancers with a poor prognosis and a high recurrence rate. Eugenol shows anticancer effect in a variety of cancers, but it has been rarely studied in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). OBJECTIVE Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the role of Eugenol in OSCC and the underlying mechanism. METHODS After different concentrations of Eugenol (0, 200, 400 and 800 μM) treatment, the viability, proliferation, migration and invasion of OSCC cell line SCC9 was measured by CCK-8, colony formation, wound-healing and transwell assays, respectively. TUNEL staining was employed to detect the apoptosis. Western blotting was used to evaluate gene expression at protein level. Molecular docking was used to identify the target of Eugenol. RESULTS Eugenol decreased the proliferation, reduced the abilities of invasion and migration along with the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) 2 and MMP9 in SCC9 cells. On the contrary, the ratio of apoptotic cells was increased by Eugenol. In addition, Eugenol down-regulated B cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) expression, but up-regulated BCL-2 associated X (Bax), cleaved caspase 3 and cleaved poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) expression. Meanwhile, Eugenol exerted its effect on SCC9 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Eugenol could bind to macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), the expression of which was down-regulated after Eugenol treatment. Besides, overexpression of MIF reversed all the effects of Eugenol on OSCC cells. CONCLUSION In summary, Eugenol suppressed the malignant processes of OSCC cells by targeting MIF, which could guide the clinical application of Eugenol in OSCC.

Abstract
In this article, we review the chapter on tumors of the larynx, hypopharynx, trachea and parapharyngeal space in the new edition of the WHO book, focusing on the new developments in comparison to the previous edition. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and its variants are by far the most common malignancies at these locations, with very limited new insights. The most important is the introduction of new targeted treatment-checkpoint inhibitors, with a new task for pathologists, who may help to predict the response to treatment by analyzing the expression of targeted proteins in biopsy samples. Precancerous lesions remain a controversial topic and, similarly to other organs, it is acceptable to use the terms "dysplasia" or "squamous intraepithelial lesion" (SIL), but there is a slight difference between low-grade dysplasia and low-grade SIL: in the former, mild atypia must be present, while the latter also includes hyperplastic epithelium without atypia. Two approaches have been proposed: a two-tiered system with low- and high-grade dysplasia/SIL and a three-tiered system with an additional category, carcinoma in situ. We are still searching for reliable diagnostic markers to surpass the subjectivity in biopsy diagnosis, with a few potential candidate markers on the horizon, e.g., stem cell markers. Other tumors are rare at these locations, e.g., hematolymphoid, neuroendocrine and salivary gland neoplasms, and are no longer included in Chapter 3. They must be diagnosed according to criteria described in specific chapters. The same holds true for soft tissue tumors, with the exception of cartilaginous neoplasms, which are still included in Chapter 3.

Abstract
Verrucous carcinoma (VC) is a rare subtype of squamous cell carcinoma that commonly occurs in the oral cavity. However, VC of the facial skin is relatively rare. We report a case of a 91-year-old woman with VC of the facial skin in the left zygoma area. She was diagnosed with actinic keratosis (4 × 3 cm) of the same site approximately 12 years previously, but declined further treatment. The mass was excised with a minimum of 0.4 cm from gross margins with the result of free from tumor of all margins by frozen section, allowing for primary closure after skin undermining. Basal resection was performed in the preplatysmal plane. The diagnosis of VC was confirmed by histopathological examination. Postoperatively, the wound healed without incident and with no signs of facial nerve injury. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of VC of facial skin arising from actinic keratosis.

Abstract
Various abnormalities of the tongue, including cancers, commonly require surgical removal to sequester growth and metastasis. However, even minor resections can affect functional outcomes such as speech and swallowing, thereby reducing quality of life. Surgical resections alone create volumetric muscle loss whereby muscle tissue cannot self-regenerate within the tongue. In these cases, the tongue is reconstructed typically in the form of autologous skin flaps. However, flap reconstruction has many limitations and unfortunately is the primary option for oral and reconstructive surgeons to treat tongue defects. The alternative, but yet undeveloped strategy for tongue reconstruction is regenerative medicine, which widely focuses on building new organs with stem cells. Regenerative medicine has successfully treated many tissues, but research has inadequately addressed the tongue as a vital organ in need of tissue engineering. In this review, we address the current standard for tongue reconstruction, the cellular mechanisms of muscle cell development, and the stem cell studies that have attempted muscle engineering within the tongue. Until now, no review has focused on engineering the tongue with regenerative medicine, which could guide innovative strategies for tongue reconstruction.
