Abstract
Sex differences in AKI continue to be identified. Generally, women are protected from AKI when compared to men. Much of the protection exhibited in women is diminished after menopause. These sex and age effects have also been noted in animal models of AKI. Gonadal hormones, as modifiers of incidence, severity, and progression of AKI, have been offered as likely contributors to this sex and age effect. In animal models of AKI, estrogen and testosterone seem to modulate susceptibility. Questions remain however regarding cellular and molecular changes that are initiated by modulation of these hormones because both estrogen and testosterone have effects across cell types that play a role in AKI. Although findings have largely been informed by studies in males, molecular pathways that are involved in the initiation and progression of AKI may be modulated by gonadal hormones. Compounding the hormone-receptor effects are developmental effects of sex chromosomal complement and epigenetic influences that may confer sex-based baseline differences in gene and protein expression, and gene dosage effects of X inactivation and escape on molecular pathways. Elucidation of sex-based protection may afford a more complete view of AKI and potential therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, the effect on susceptibility to AKI in transgender patients, who receive life-altering and essential gender-affirming hormone therapy, requires greater attention. In this review, several potential contributors to the sex differences observed in humans and animal models are discussed.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease of unknown cause (CKDu), also known as Mesoamerican nephropathy, typically presents as an ischemic nephropathy with chronic tubulointerstitial fibrosis in normotensive patients, rapidly progressing to kidney failure. In this first-in-human, open-label, safety study, we followed 18 patients with CKDu (stages 3-5) for 36 months after receiving a single infusion of angiogenic/anti-fibrotic autologous adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells into their kidneys bilaterally via renal artery catheterization. SVF therapy was safe and well tolerated. There were no SVF-related serious adverse events and no procedural complications. Color Doppler evaluation at 2 months demonstrated increased perfusion to the interlobar and/or arcuate artery levels in each kidney evaluated (36/36) with a reduction in resistance index at the hilar artery (35/36) kidneys. Beyond 12 months, patients with initial eGFR <30 mL/minute/1.73 m2 deteriorated, whereas those ≥30 mL/minute/1.73 m2 further sustained their renal function, suggesting a possible renal protective effect in that group.

Abstract
Urea is an organic compound that has been reported to be effective against many pathological conditions. However, many other studies have reported the toxic effects of urea. These controversies on the biological roles of urea remain unresolved. This review aims to evaluate the biological roles of urea in experimental animals from data published in peer-reviewed journals. A PubMed search was conducted using the phrase, "urea application in experimental animals." A total of 13 publications that met the inclusion criteria were evaluated. The test substance, animal model, number of animals, doses, duration of treatment, and effects were recorded. Regarding the toxic effect, urea caused decreased excretion of other nitrogenous compounds, increased oxidative stress, decreased insulin, and impairment of beta-cell glycolysis. Furthermore, it caused endothelial dysfunction, loss of synapsis, and decreased olfaction. Regarding the therapeutic effects, urea caused increased growth, increased digestion, and decreased hepatic dysfunction. It also induced apoptosis of tumor cells and exerted neuroprotective properties. Products containing urea should be used with caution, especially in individuals with symptoms of chronic kidney disease. However, more studies are needed to elucidate the mechanisms of its therapeutic effects.

The effect of interval and continuous work on markers of acute kidney injury in a hot environment. Eur J Appl Physiol 2022; 122:2437-2450. Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the effect of high-intensity interval work (HIIW) and moderate-intensity continuous work (MICW) on markers of acute kidney injury (AKI) and kidney function in a hot environment. METHODS Nine males completed 2 h of work (2 × 60 min with 10 min passive rest) in a hot environment (40 °C and 15% relative humidity) as either HIIW [2 min at 80% peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) and 3 min at 30% VO2peak] or MICW (matched for total work of HIIW). Blood and urine samples were collected immediately before (Pre), after (Post), 1 h (1 h Post), and 24 h after (24 h Post) the trials. Urine flow rate (UFR), creatinine clearance, insulin-like growth factor binding protein 7 (IGFBP7), urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL), and urinary kidney injury marker 1 (uKIM-1) were measured to assess kidney function and injury. RESULTS Log IGFBP7 (p < 0.01), log uNGAL (p < 0.01), and log uKIM-1 (p = 0.01) all displayed a main effect for time after both HIIW and MICW. IGFBP7 (p = 0.01) and uKIM-1 (p < 0.01), corrected for Uosm, were higher after HIIW compared to MICW at Post, while IGFBP7 was also higher 1 h Post after HIIW compared to MICW (p = 0.02). UFR significantly decreasing from Pre to Post (p < 0.01) and 1 h Post (p < 0.01), but no main effect for condition (p = 0.53). CONCLUSION Both HIIW and MICW in a hot environment caused an increase in biomarkers of kidney injury (IGFBP7, KIM-1, and NGAL), but HIIW may have a greater impact on biomarkers related to AKI.

Under the name of Meroamerican Nephropathy (MeN) several hypotheses (including dehydration, heat stress, environmental or toxic exposure or even infections) have tried to explain the etiology this new disease. MeN affects young men, agricultural workers exposed to high temperatures. MeN courses with unspecific symptoms as low-grade fever and dysuria and progressive kidney disease with impaired renal function and hydroelectrolyte disturbances. The diagnosis requires kidney biopsy showing tubule-interstitial nephritis (usually at chronic stage). Although MeN conditions a high morbi-mortality in endemic regions, there is a lack of specific treatment and only preventive measures have demonstrated some effect of prognosis (avoid heat stress, constant hydration). In this review we aim to summarize the available information of MeN, illustrating the information in a case report.

Abstract
Amongst the many threats to health in our world, the most challenging ones are the ones with unknown causes. There is a mysterious epidemic of kidney disease called chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) that is occurring in many parts of the world. Unrelated to known risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension, CKDu mostly affects the young and middle-aged, with slight preponderance in males. It mostly occurs in people living in rural areas, especially working in agricultural jobs. Worldwide, the number of people with chronic kidney disease, and those who need dialysis and renal replacement, is increasing every year as compared to other chronic conditions like diabetes and AIDS. It's not just alarming but a great challenge to healthcare systems across the world, especially in resource-poor countries. CKDu has become a silent killer for most patients. The occurrence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in CKDu can be catastrophic for individuals, especially in countries with limited medical facilities, causing a significant socio-economic burden. Even within these economically developing nations, people affected by CKDu usually are from the most vulnerable and underserved populations. As a definitive etiology has not been postulated for CKDu to date, this comprehensive review was undertaken to throw light on the poorly understood epidemiologic risk factors and the course of the disease.

Abstract
Summary: Opioid use and misuse in the United States has been at epidemic proportions and is predicted to increase further in the setting of the Coronavirus disease 19 pandemic. Acute kidney injury is a condition associated with significant morbidity and increased mortality. We review the literature on the effect of opioids on kidney function and critically examine the association between opioid use and acute kidney injury and identify at-risk populations in whom opioids should be used with caution. We also discuss the role of biomarkers in elucidating this condition and propose preventive measures, novel therapeutic options, and research directions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an emerging public health priority in Central America. However, data on the prevalence of CKD in Guatemala, Central America's most populous country, are limited, especially for rural communities. METHODS We conducted a population-representative survey of 2 rural agricultural municipalities in Guatemala. We collected anthropometric data, blood pressure, serum and urine creatinine, glycosylated hemoglobin, and urine albumin. Sociodemographic, health, and exposure data were self-reported. RESULTS We enrolled 807 individuals (63% of all eligible, 35% male, mean age 39.5 years). An estimated 4.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.4-6.6) had CKD, defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) less than 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2. Most individuals with an eGFR below 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2 had diabetes or hypertension. In multivariable analysis, the important factors associated with risk for an eGFR less than 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2 included a history of diabetes or hypertension (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 11.21; 95% CI 3.28-38.24), underweight (body mass index [BMI] <18.5) (aOR 21.09; 95% CI 2.05-217.0), and an interaction between sugar cane agriculture and poverty (aOR 1.10; 95% CI 1.01-1.19). CONCLUSIONS In this population-based survey, most observed CKD was associated with diabetes and hypertension. These results emphasize the urgent public health need to address the emerging epidemic of diabetes, hypertension, and CKD in rural Guatemala. In addition, the association between CKD and sugar cane in individuals living in poverty provides some circumstantial evidence for existence of CKD of unknown etiology in the study communities, which requires further investigation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The incidence of chronic kidney disease of unknown or uncertain etiology (CKDu) is recognized as a global non-communicable health crisis. The goal of this work is to compare the types of research studies in Latin America and Asia, two regions with increasing CKDu incidence. METHODS A comparative literature review was conducted to evaluate the CKDu research design for peer-reviewed articles published from 2015 to 2019. Full texts were reviewed to identify study location, study type, study design, risk factors evaluated, and if applicable, sample type and number. RESULTS In Asia and Latin America, 82 and 65 articles were identified in total, respectively, with 55 field studies in Asia versus 34 in Latin America. In Asia, research was focused on drinking water (34), heavy metals (20), and agrochemical product usage (19) as potential risk factors. In Latin America, research focused mostly on heat stress/dehydration (36) and agrochemical product usage (18) as potential CKDu risk factors. Biological samples were collected more frequently than environmental samples, especially in Latin America. DISCUSSION Research to pinpoint the risk factors associated with CKDu to date is not standardized and typically limited in geographical scope. The emphasis of CKDu research varies by geographic region, with a greater priority placed on water quality and chemical exposure in Asia, versus dehydration and heat stress in Latin America. Using a harmonized approach to CKDu research would yield improved understanding of the risk factors associated with CKDu and how they compare across affected regions.

Abstract
Currently, there is the paradox of low water intake but increased intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SB) in several populations; those habits are associated with an increased prevalence of metabolic derangements and greater chronic disease mortality. Persistent heat dehydration and increased SB intake stimulate the continued release of vasopressin and overactivation of the polyol-fructokinase pathway, synergizing each other, an effect partially mediated by oxidative stress. The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether water restriction concurrent with SB hydration can cause renal damage by stimulating similar pathways as heat dehydration. Three groups of male Wistar rats (n = 6) were fluid restricted; from 10 am to 12 pm animals could rehydrate with tap water (W), or sweetened beverages, one prepared with 11% of a fructose-glucose combination (SB), or with the noncaloric edulcorant stevia (ST). A normal control group of healthy rats was also studied. The animals were followed for 4 weeks. Markers of dehydration and renal damage were evaluated at the end of the study. Fluid restriction and water hydration mildly increased urine osmolality and induced a 15% fall in CrCl while increased the markers of tubular damage by NAG and KIM-1. Such changes were in association with a mild overexpression of V1a and V2 renal receptors, polyol fructokinase pathway overactivation, and increased renal oxidative stress with reduced expression of antioxidant enzymes. Hydration with SB significantly amplified those alterations, while in stevia hydrated rats, the changes were similar to the ones observed in water hydrated rats. These data suggest that current habits of hydration could be a risk factor in developing kidney damage.

Abstract
The global burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has risen, and chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) contributes considerably to the national burden of CKD. It is characterized by irreversible, slowly advancing disease, and symptoms often appear in the late stages of the disease. It is a serious, novel cause of kidney failure and leads to premature deaths. Many hypotheses have emerged; however, the etiology of CKDu continues to be elusive and debatable and it is claimed that the etiology is multifactorial, encompassing environmental, genetic, occupational, and social factors. The dominant histopathological feature is chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis. It predominantly affects individuals with low socio-economic status, of working age, largely without chronic comorbidities, who perform strenuous labor in extreme conditions in various tropical areas of the world. It is often fatal due to fast progression and limited access to dialysis or transplant options in the involved geographic areas. Early recognition and appropriate interventions at the earliest possible stage are imperative for decreasing its associated morbidity and mortality. In this review, I tried to summarize available evidence on the risk factors, epidemiology, clinical features, treatment, and prevention of CKDu. The literature search for this review was conducted comprehensively by using different electronic databases and by using appropriate search terms.

Abstract
The kidneys' integrative responses to heat stress aid thermoregulation, cardiovascular control, and water and electrolyte regulation. Recent evidence suggests the kidneys are at increased risk of pathological events during heat stress, namely acute kidney injury (AKI), and that this risk is compounded by dehydration and exercise. This heat stress related AKI is believed to contribute to the epidemic of chronic kidney disease (CKD) occurring in occupational settings. It is estimated that AKI and CKD affect upwards of 45 million individuals in the global workforce. Water and electrolyte disturbances and AKI, both of which are representative of kidney-related pathology, are the two leading causes of hospitalizations during heat waves in older adults. Structural and physiological alterations in aging kidneys likely contribute to this increased risk. With this background, this comprehensive narrative review will provide the first aggregation of research into the integrative physiological response of the kidneys to heat stress. While the focus of this review is on the human kidneys, we will utilize both human and animal data to describe these responses to passive and exercise heat stress, and how they are altered with heat acclimation. Additionally, we will discuss recent studies that indicate an increased risk of AKI due to exercise in the heat. Lastly, we will introduce the emerging public health crisis of older adults during extreme heat events and how the aging kidneys may be more susceptible to injury during heat stress.

Abstract
High-technology medicine saves lives and produces waste; this is the case of dialysis. The increasing amounts of waste products can be biologically dangerous in different ways: some represent a direct infectious or toxic danger for other living creatures (potentially contaminated or hazardous waste), while others are harmful for the planet (plastic and non-recycled waste). With the aim of increasing awareness, proposing joint actions and coordinating industrial and social interactions, the Italian Society of Nephrology is presenting this position statement on ways in which the environmental impact of caring for patients with kidney diseases can be reduced. Due to the particular relevance in waste management of dialysis, which produces up to 2 kg of potentially contaminated waste per session and about the same weight of potentially recyclable materials, together with technological waste (dialysis machines), and involves high water and electricity consumption, the position statement mainly focuses on dialysis management, identifying ten first affordable actions: (1) reducing the burden of dialysis (whenever possible adopting an intent to delay strategy, with wide use of incremental schedules); (2) limiting drugs and favouring "natural" medicine focussing on lifestyle and diet; (3) encouraging the reuse of "household" hospital material; (4) recycling paper and glass; (5) recycling non-contaminated plastic; (6) reducing water consumption; (7) reducing energy consumption; (8) introducing environmental-impact criteria in checklists for evaluating dialysis machines and supplies; (9) encouraging well-planned triage of contaminated and non-contaminated materials; (10) demanding planet-friendly approaches in the building of new facilities.

Abstract
Occupational heat stress increases the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) and kidney disease. This study tested the hypothesis that attenuating the magnitude of hyperthermia (i.e., increase in core temperature) and/or dehydration during prolonged physical work in the heat attenuates increases in AKI biomarkers. Thirteen healthy adults (3 women, 23 ± 2 yr) exercised for 2 h in a 39.7 ± 0.6°C, 32 ± 3% relative-humidity environmental chamber. In four trials, subjects received water to remain euhydrated (Water), continuous upper-body cooling (Cooling), a combination of both (Water + Cooling), or no intervention (Control). The magnitude of hyperthermia (increased core temperature of 1.9 ± 0.3°C; P < 0.01) and dehydration (percent loss of body mass of -2.4 ± 0.5%; P < 0.01) were greatest in the Control group. There were greater increases in the urinary biomarkers of AKI in the Control trial: albumin (increase of 13 ± 11 μg/mL; P ≤ 0.05 compared with other trials), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) (increase of 16 ± 14 ng/dL, P ≤ 0.05 compared with Cooling and Water + Cooling groups), and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) (increase of 227 ± 190 ng/mL; P ≤ 0.05 compared with other trials). Increases in IGFBP7 in the Control trial persisted after correcting for urine production/concentration. There were no differences in the AKI biomarker tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 2 (TIMP-2) between trials (P ≥ 0.11). Our findings indicate that the risk of AKI is highest with greater magnitudes of hyperthermia and dehydration during physical work in the heat. Additionally, the differential findings between IGFBP7 (preferentially secreted in proximal tubules) and TIMP-2 (distal tubules) suggest the proximal tubules as the location of potential renal injury.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We demonstrate that the risk for acute kidney injury (AKI) is higher in humans with greater magnitudes of hyperthermia and dehydration during physical work in the heat and that alleviating the hyperthermia and/or limiting dehydration equally reduce the risk of AKI. The biomarker panel employed in this study suggests the proximal tubules as the location of potential renal injury.

Abstract
An epidemic of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is occurring in laborers who undertake physical work in hot conditions. Rodent data indicate that heat exposure causes kidney injury, and when this injury is regularly repeated it can elicit CKD. Studies in humans demonstrate that a single bout of exercise in the heat increases biomarkers of acute kidney injury (AKI). Elevations in AKI biomarkers in this context likely reflect an increased susceptibility of the kidneys to AKI. Data largely derived from animal models indicate that the mechanism(s) by which exercise in the heat may increase the risk of AKI is multifactorial. For instance, heat-related reductions in renal blood flow may provoke heterogenous intrarenal blood flow. This can promote localized ischemia, hypoxemia and ATP depletion in renal tubular cells, which could be exacerbated by increased sodium reabsorption. Heightened fructokinase pathway activity likely exacerbates ATP depletion occurring secondary to intrarenal fructose production and hyperuricemia. Collectively, these responses can promote inflammation and oxidative stress, thereby increasing the risk of AKI. Equivalent mechanistic evidence in humans is lacking. Such an understanding could inform the development of countermeasures to safeguard the renal health of laborers who regularly engage in physical work in hot environments.

Abstract
Recently repeated heat stress and dehydration have been reported to cause oxidative stress and kidney damage that is enhanced by rehydrating with fructose solutions. We hypothesized that antioxidants might provide a novel way to prevent kidney damage. To test this hypothesis, mild heat stress was induced by exposing rats to 37 °C during 1 h in a closed chamber. The supplementation with water-soluble antioxidants (Antiox), ascorbic acid 1% plus N-acetyl cysteine 600 mg/L was done either in the 10% fructose 2 h rehydration fluid immediately after heat stress (Fructose 10% + Antiox), and/or in the tap water (Water + Antiox) for the remainder of the day, or in both fluids. After 4 weeks, control rats exposed to heat with fructose rehydration developed impaired renal function, tubular injury, intrarenal oxidative stress, a reduction in Nrf2-Keap1 antioxidant pathway, stimulation of vasopressin and the intrarenal polyol-fructokinase pathway. In contrast, dosing the antioxidants in the tap water (i.e., before the heat exposure and rehydration with fructose) preserved renal function, prevented renal tubule dysfunction and avoided the increase in systemic blood pressure. These effects were likely due to the amplification of the antioxidant defenses through increased Nrf2 nuclear translocation stimulated by the antioxidants and by the prevention of polyol fructokinase pathway overactivation. More studies to understand the mechanisms implicated in this pathology are warranted as there is recent evidence that they may be operating in humans as well.

Abstract
Background Leptospirosis is a worldwide prevalent zoonosis and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading global disease burden. Because of pathophysiological changes in the kidney, it has been suggested that these conditions may be associated. However, the extent of this interaction has not been synthetized. We aimed to systematically review and critically appraise the evidence on the association between leptospirosis and CKD. Methodology/Principal findings Observational studies with a control group were selected. Leptospirosis, confirmed with laboratory methods, and CKD also based on a laboratory assessment, were the exposures and outcomes of interest. The search was conducted in EMBASE, MEDLINE, Global Health, Scopus and Web of Science. Studies selected for qualitative synthesis were assessed for risk of bias following the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. 5,981 reports were screened, and 2 (n = 3,534) were included for qualitative synthesis. The studies were conducted in Taiwan and Nicaragua; these reported cross-sectional and longitudinal estimates. In the general population, the mean estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was lower (p<0.001) in people testing positive for antileptospira antibodies (eGFR = 98.3) than in negative controls (eGFR = 100.8). Among sugarcane applicants with high creatinine, those who were seropositive had lower eGFR (mean difference: -10.08). In a prospective analysis, people with high antileptospira antibodies titer at baseline and follow-up, had worse eGFR (p<0.05). Conclusion Although the available evidence suggests there may be a positive association between leptospirosis and CKD, whereby leptospirosis could be a risk factor for CKD, it is still premature to draw conclusions. There is an urgent need for research on this association. Leptospirosis is an infection that can affect the kidneys acutely, though it seems that even after the acute infection there could be risk of a long-term impaired kidney function. The evidence on this matter is sparse and limited, thus the need to comprehensively seek, synthetize and appraise the available scientific literature. In so doing, this work has found preliminary evidence that leptospirosis may be associated with impaired kidney function as per eGFR. This work and findings strongly reveal that more research is needed to quantify and characterize the long-term risk of CKD among those who had had leptospirosis infection. The raising burden of non-communicable diseases paired with a still non-negligible burden of communicable and neglected tropical diseases in low- and middle-income countries, deserve the synergism of these two broad fields for the benefit of patients and population health.

Abstract
RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE Mesoamerican nephropathy (MeN), a form of chronic kidney disease (CKD) of unknown cause in Central America, affects young individuals working in physically strenuous occupations. Repeated episodes of work-related kidney injury may lead to CKD in this setting. We aimed to better understand the burden and natural history of acute kidney injury (AKI) in workers at risk for MeN. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study of active sugarcane workers, followed by prospective follow-up of individuals with AKI. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS 326 sugarcane workers with normal preharvest serum creatinine (Scr) values and no history of CKD in an MeN hotspot in Nicaragua near the end of the harvest, and prospective follow-up of workers with AKI. PREDICTOR AKI during the harvest, as defined by Scr level increase ≥ 0.3mg/dL over baseline to a level ≥ 1.3mg/dL. OUTCOMES Kidney function trajectory and development of CKD over 12 months. ANALYTICAL APPROACH Linear regression models were used to analyze the association between job category and kidney function. For workers with AKI, the effect of time on Scr level was evaluated using linear mixed effects. RESULTS 34 of 326 participants were found to have AKI, with a median late-harvest Scr level of 1.64mg/dL in the AKI group. Workers without AKI had a median Scr level of 0.88mg/dL. AKI was more common among cane cutters compared with other field workers. Participants with AKI had variable degrees of kidney function recovery, with median 6- and 12-month Scr values of 1.25 and 1.27mg/dL, respectively (P < 0.001 for each follow-up value compared to late-harvest Scr). When we compared workers' kidney function before the AKI episode to their kidney function at last follow-up, 10 participants with AKI developed de novo estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60mL/min/1.73m2 and 11 had a >30% decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate. LIMITATIONS Follow-up limited to 1 year and some loss to follow-up in the prospective component of the study. Broad definition of AKI that includes both acute and subacute kidney injury. CONCLUSIONS In a group of sugarcane workers with normal preharvest kidney function, newly decreased kidney function developing during the harvest season was common. Of those with kidney injury, nearly half had established CKD 12 months later.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this systematic review is to examine the epidemiological knowledge and gaps in understanding of the potential causes of chronic kidney disease of undetermined cause (CKDu) in Meso-America. METHODS A systematic literature search of epidemiological studies of CKDu was conducted in PubMed, Embase and Web of Science from January 2000 to January 2017. Study quality was assessed by adapting the tool from Higgins et al. for observational studies. Where applicable, the summary prevalence odds ratio (POR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random effects model. RESULTS Twenty-five epidemiological studies were included in the analysis of risk factors for CKDu. The quality assessment of each occupational and community study was medium. The PORs for CKDu were males versus females 2.42 (95% CI 1.76-3.08), family history of CKD (versus none) 1.84 (95% CI 1.37-2.30), high water intake (versus low) 1.61 (95% CI 1.01-2.21) and low altitude (versus highland) 2.09 (95% CI 1.00-3.17). There were no significant associations between CKDu and pesticide exposure (versus no) 1.17 (95% CI 0.87-1.46), alcohol consumption (versus no) 1.34 (95% CI 0.84-1.84), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (versus no) 0.99 (95% CI 0.60-1.39) and heat stress (versus no) 1.52 (95% CI -0.91 - 3.95). CONCLUSION Our meta-analysis showed positive associations for males (versus females) and family history of CKD, water intake, lowland altitude and CKDu. There were no significant associations with pesticide exposure, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs intake, heat stress and alcohol consumption.
