Abstract
BACKGROUND Dysbiosis during childhood impacts the configuration and maturation of the microbiota. The immaturity of the infant microbiota is linked with the development of inflammatory, allergic, and dysmetabolic diseases. AIMS To identify taxonomic changes associated with age and GDM and classify the maturity of the intestinal microbiota of children of mothers with GDM and children without GDM (n-GDM). METHODS Next-generation sequencing was used to analyze the V3-V4 region of 16S rRNA gene. QIIME2 and Picrust2 were used to determine the difference in the relative abundance of bacterial genera between the study groups and to predict the functional profile of the intestinal microbiota. RESULTS According to age, the older GDM groups showed a lower alpha diversity and different abundance of Enterobacteriaceae, Veillonella, Clostridiales, and Bacteroides. Regarding the functional profile, PWY-7377 and K05895 associated with Vitamin B12 metabolism were reduced in GDM groups. Compared to n-GDM group, GDM offspring had microbiota immaturity as age-discriminatory taxa in random forest failed to classify GDM offspring according to developmental age (OOB error 81%). Conclusion. Offspring from mothers with GDM have a distinctive taxonomic profile related to taxa associated with gut microbiota immaturity.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Recent research breakthroughs have emerged from applied basic research throughout all scientific areas, including adult and paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition (PGHAN). The research landscape within the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) is also inevitably changing from clinical research to studies involving applied laboratory research. This position paper aims to depict the current status quo of basic science and translational research within ESPGHAN, and to delineate how the society could invest in research in the present and future time. The paper also explores which research areas in the field of PGHAN represent the current and future priorities, and what type of support is needed across the ESPGHAN working groups (WGs) and special interest groups (SIGs) to fulfil their research goals.

Abstract
Adequate dietary intake is vital for infants' growth and development. The aim was to analyse food consumption and energy and nutrient intakes in a group of healthy Spanish infants and toddlers. Cross-sectional study. 154 infants were assessed at 6 months, and followed at 12 and 30 months. Clinical history, anthropometry, type of feeding, food consumption and energy and nutrient intakes (24-hours recall) were estimated. Advice about food consumed, estimated average requirements, the prevalence of inadequate intakes and percentage of adequacy of the recommended dietary allowance were applied. Toddlers had an excessive daily consumption of meat (>51.3g/day), milk (>545g/day), fish (>20.8g/day) and free-sugar foods (>30.5g/day). This consumption was related to a very high intake of proteins (>18%) and free sugars (>10%), at 12 and 30 months, as a percentage of daily energy intake. The mean prevalence of inadequacy intakes was above 48% for iron at 6 months, and 68% and 87% for vitamin D at 12 and 30 months, respectively. At 6 months, infants who were breastfed had greater adequacy in energy and nutrients to recommended dietary, while infants fed infant formula had a higher intake (>120% compared with RDA) in vitamins E, C, B1, B2, pantothenic acid, B6, B12 and folic acid. The contribution of micronutrients in infant formula should be reviewed, appropriate protein and free sugars should be provided during complementary feeding, as well as strategies to avoid vitamin D deficiency since childhood; and continue with the promotion of breastfeeding.

Abstract: Nutritional surveys are important information sources for public policy in the food and nutrition field. They focus on assessing usual dietary patterns, because health outcomes result from the long-term intake. Here we aimed to evaluate diet quality adjusted for day-to-day variance among Brazilian children. Data were collected between March 2013 and August 2015. The sample included 8- to 12-year-old children (n = 1,357) from public schools from all administrative regions of a Brazilian city. One 24-h dietary recall (24HR) was collected for the whole sample and two 24HR for two non-consecutive days of the same week for a subsample. The Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI-2010) was adapted to Brazilian food habits and the Brazilian dietary guidelines were used to evaluate diet quality. Statistical analysis included a multipart, nonlinear mixed model with correlated random effects proposed by the U.S. National Cancer Institute to correct diet quality for day-to-day variance. The adapted HEI-2010 total score was 51.8. Children with poorer diet quality (< 10th percentile) scored less than 41.1, and children with higher diet quality (> 90th percentile) scored more than 62.4. The overall adequacy of adapted HEI-2010 components was low. Higher adequacy percentages were identified for total protein foods (94.9%), greens (62.3%), and seafood and plant proteins (52.2%). Seven components showed less than 10% of adequacy: refined grains, fatty acids, dairy, sodium, total vegetable, whole grains, and empty calories. This study identified the main inadequacies among children’s diet quality, which can guide promotion actions for healthy eating.

Abstract
The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition has experienced an amazing development in the 50 years of its existence. It grew from a small group of 36 friends who held an informal meeting with some 20 oral presentations to share and discuss their clinical and research work, to a large, multiprofessional society that sets widely recognized standards for clinical care and policy and hosts the world's largest congress of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition with more than 4500 delegates from 100 countries. However, the Society's mission has remained the same: to promote the health of children with special attention to the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and nutritional status, through knowledge creation, the dissemination of science based information, the promotion of best practice in the delivery of care and the provision of high-quality education. The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition's success is based on the enthusiasm and engagement of its membership that contribute extensive volunteer work to support child health, while maintaining a positive spirit of collaboration and friendship, which characterises this Society. This article aims at describing recent developments and the current situation of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition.

Abstract
Since the conception of an idea of a few paediatric gastroenterologists in Europe to create a society for Paediatric Gastroenterology in 1967, and its foundation in 1968, half a century has passed. The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) now celebrates its 50th anniversary and its utmost success in combining clinical and scientific expertise in the fields of paediatric gastroenterology, haepatology, and nutrition. To describe this success story 14 of the still living presidents of ESPGHAN recount their impressions of the steady growth of ESPGHAN with all the historical facets from their own points of view. This historical view of ESPGHAN over the last 5 decades provides personal accounts of the development of all activities and creations of this great European Society. The Society started as a small family of experts in the field into a global working open society involved in a large variety of activities within the subspecialties, becoming a leading organisation in Europe and beyond. This unique view gives also a wonderful insight into the famous clinicians and researchers from all over Europe who have helped in the growth and development of ESPGHAN. By describing all these activities and collaborations it becomes clear that this astonishing pan-European enterprise was achieved by people who put considerable effort and time into the development of this society. Their statements serve as a historical source and reference for future evaluation of the first 50 years of ESPGHAN. In depicting different time episodes, and by assembling all the historical pieces of a puzzle together, the statements help to illustrate how a highly structured society such as ESPGHAN has evolved over the last 50 years, for what it stands for today and what is to be expected in the future.

Abstract
Growth and development are central characteristics of childhood. Deviations from normal growth can indicate serious health challenges. The adverse impact of early growth faltering and malnutrition on later health has long been known. In contrast, the impact of rapid early weight and body fat gain on programming of later disease risk have only recently received increased attention. Numerous observational studies related diet in early childhood and rapid early growth to the risk of later obesity and associated disorders. Causality was confirmed in a large, double-blind randomised trial testing the 'Early Protein Hypothesis'. In this trial we found that attenuation of protein supply in infancy normalized early growth and markedly reduced obesity prevalence in early school age. These results indicate the need to describe and analyse growth patterns and their regulation through diet in more detail and to characterize the underlying metabolic and epigenetic mechanisms, given the potential major relevance for public health and policy. Better understanding of growth patterns and their regulation could have major benefits for the promotion of public health, consumer-orientated nutrition recommendations, and the development of improved food products for specific target populations.
