Abstract
BACKGROUND Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most catastrophic injuries that might lead to permanent use of a wheelchair and severely affects the quality of life, hence SCI patients report lower satisfaction with life (SWL) than the general population. Therefore, it is important to identify factors that determine SWL among wheelchair users with SCI. Our study aimed to assess the prevalence of low SWL and to identify its determinants among wheelchair users with SCI in Egypt. METHODS A cross-sectional study included 105 wheelchair users with SCI from the Al Hassan Foundation for wheelchair users in Egypt. The main outcome measure was low SWL, while the independent variables included sociodemographic characteristics, injury-related characteristics, anxiety, depression, neuropathic pain, functional independence, and environmental barriers. RESULTS The prevalence of low SWL among study participants was 57.1%. We found significant associations between SWL and age, area of living, and age at injury. Additionally, SWL correlated negatively with anxiety, depression, neuropathic pain, and environmental barriers, and positively with functional independence. Finally, the binary multiple logistic regression revealed that living in Upper Egypt (p = 0.017, OR = 13.7), depression (p = 0.034, OR = 6.08), older age (p = 0.002, OR = 1.21), and work and school environmental barriers (p = 0.022, OR = 0.46) were the predictors of low SWL. CONCLUSION To improve the SWL for wheelchair users with SCI we need to effectively manage neuropathic pain, depression, and anxiety, and promote functional independence. There is an urgent need to reinforce legislation to improve the living conditions for wheelchair users with SCI in Egypt, especially in Upper Egypt.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) burden and costs of spinal cord injury (SCI) on health services, patients and wider society. METHODS A systematic review guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Statement was conducted in March 2021 through Scopus, PubMed and Embase databases. Inclusion criteria were quantitative studies on SCI reporting healthcare costs, social costs and/or HRQoL measured with the Euroqol EQ-5D or Short-Form 36. Risk of bias was assessed using the QualSyst tool. Descriptive analyses, random-effects direct meta-analysis and random-effects meta-regression were conducted. RESULTS A total of 67 studies were eligible for inclusion. SCI individuals tend to report higher HRQoL in mental than physical dimensions of the Short-Form 36. Neurological level of SCI negatively affects HRQoL. Cross-sectional studies find employment is associated with better HRQoL, but the effect is not observed in longitudinal studies. The estimated lifetime expenditure per individual with SCI ranged from US$0.7 million to US$2.5 million, with greater costs associated with earlier age at injury, neurological level, United States of America healthcare setting and the inclusion of non-healthcare items in the study. CONCLUSIONS SCI is associated with low HRQoL on mobility and physical dimensions. Mental health scores tend to be greater than physical scores, and most dimensions of HRQoL appear to improve over time, at least over the first year. SCI is associated with high costs which vary by country. CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION This review was registered in PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42021235801).

Abstract
PURPOSE Spinal cord injury (SCI) is impairment of the spinal cord that adversely affects patients' health and quality of life (QoL). The aim of the study was to assess the quality of life (QoL) and related factors in patients with traumatic spinal cord injury in Middle Eastern countries. METHODS PubMed, Ovid Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), EBSCOhost, psycINFO, and Google Scholar were systematically searched for eligible studies published in peer-reviewed journals up till October 2023. RESULTS Out of 1060 papers found in the literature, only 18 studies from Iran, Lebanon, and Turkey met the inclusion criteria. The majority of the studies employed the SF-36 scale to assess for QoL. In general, all SCI patients had reduced QoL scores when compared to the healthy population. Some of the factors such as age, education level, the level of injury, time since injury onset, marriage, and job opportunities were correlated with SCI subjects QoL. Our papers were assessed and found to be of both good and high quality. CONCLUSION This review emphasizes the significant shortage of QoL studies among SCI patients in the Middle East countries and highlights the importance of improving the QoL of this marginalized population. This work should enhance the governments to establish rehabilitation centers, social and economic support systems, and mental health services to diminish complications arising from SCI.

Abstract
In this study, we developed an AI-based real-time motion feedback system for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) during rehabilitation, aiming to enhance their interest and motivation. The effectiveness of the system in improving upper-limb muscle strength during the Thera band exercises was evaluated. The motion analysis program, including exercise repetition counts and calorie consumption, was developed using MediaPipe, focusing on three key motions (chest press, shoulder press, and arm curl) for upper extremity exercises. The participants with SCI were randomly assigned to the experimental group (EG = 4) or control group (CG = 5), engaging in 1 h sessions three times a week for 8 weeks. Muscle strength tests (chest press, shoulder press, lat pull-down, and arm curl) were performed before and after exercises. Although both groups did not show significant differences, the EG group exhibited increased strength in all measured variables, whereas the CG group showed constant or reduced results. Consequently, the computer program-based system developed in this study could be effective in muscle strengthening. Furthermore, these findings may serve as a valuable foundation for future AI-driven rehabilitation exercise systems.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Secondary analysis of multicentre prospective observational data. OBJECTIVES To describe methods of bladder emptying at admission and discharge in patients with recently acquired spinal cord injury (SCI) and to describe predictors of bladder emptying methods at discharge. SETTING First inpatient rehabilitation in specialised rehabilitation centres in the Netherlands. METHODS Data from the Dutch Spinal Cord Injury Database collected between 2015 and 2019 were used. McNemar-Bowker test was used to evaluate if bladder emptying methods differed over time; One-Way ANOVA and Chi-Square tests to see if bladder emptying methods differed by demographic and injury-related characteristics. Binary logistic regression was used to predict the type of bladder emptying at discharge with demographic and injury-related characteristics measured at admission. RESULTS Of 1403 patients, 44.1% had cervical, 38.4% thoracic and 17.5% lumbosacral lesions at admission. AIS classification was mostly D (63.8%). The method of bladder emptying changed significantly (p < 0.001) from admission to discharge: decrease of clean intermittent assisted catheterisation (17.1% to 4.1%) and indwelling catheter (33.4% to 16.3%) and increase in clean intermittent self-catheterisation (CISC, 7.8% to 22.2%) and normal voiding (40.2% to 56.1%). Age, sex, SCI level, AIS classification and level of independence predicted the method of bladder emptying at discharge (all p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS During first inpatient rehabilitation, the method of bladder emptying changed resulting in more patients discharged with normal voiding and CISC. Age, sex, SCI level, AIS classification and level of independence in self-care were all confirmed as factors playing a role in this change.

Abstract
Introduction Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is one of the most common conditions associated with functional disability, affecting patients' quality of life (QOL). Disability can be affected by cognitive factors, such as pain catastrophizing. Similarly, unfulfilled basic psychological needs (i.e., autonomy, competence, relatedness) are associated with biases in pain perception and QOL. Using the fear-avoidance model and the self-determination theory, this study investigates: (1) the separate contribution of pain-related variables and basic psychological needs satisfaction in predicting QOL in patients proposed for LDH surgery; (2) pre- and post-surgical differences in pain catastrophizing and basic psychological needs satisfaction. Methods First, we used hierarchical regression on 193 patients (Mage = 46.10, SDage = 11.40) to identify predictors of QOL. Second, we performed paired t-tests on 55 patients to investigate pre- and post-surgical differences in pain catastrophizing and basic psychological needs satisfaction. Results Hierarchical regression showed that the model predicts 27% of the variance in QOL; medium pain level, age, pain catastrophizing, and basic psychological needs satisfaction were significant predictors. Also, pain catastrophizing significantly decreased after surgery [t (54) = 6.07, p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.81], but basic psychological needs satisfaction did not modify significantly. Discussion This research confirms the importance of pain perception and pain catastrophizing for LDH patients' QOL and broadens the applicability of the self-determination theory for spinal patients.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the association of Type D personality (TDP) with functional outcomes, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and neuropathic pain in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI), using dichotomous and continuous analysis methods. SETTING Tertiary rehabilitation center. METHODS This study included 105 persons with SCI. Independence level was determined using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM)-motor subscale. The Short Form-36 questionnaire (SF-36) was used to assess HRQoL. TDP (combined existence of negative affectivity and social inhibition) was assessed using Type D Scale-14 (DS-14). Presence of chronic pain was questioned and the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS) Pain Scale was used to distinguish neuropathic pain from others. RESULTS In dichotomous method, the FIM-motor score was significantly lower in persons with TDP (41 persons, 39%) (p = 0.025). Persons with TDP had significantly lower scores in vitality, emotional role and mental health. There was no significant difference between the groups, regarding neuropathic pain and LANSS scores (p > 0.05 for all). Negative affectivity and total DS-14 scores had negative correlation with mental health and vitality. In continuous interaction method, TDP predicted mainly the mental health components of SF-36 (particularly, vitality and mental health). Negative affectivity was the driving factor. TDP was not associated with FIM-motor, VAS pain or LANSS scores. CONCLUSIONS Mental component of HRQoL is associated with Type D in persons with SCI in both analyses. Assessment of potential differences related with TDP may be beneficial to develop and apply person-specific goals in SCI rehabilitation.

Abstract
Background: One of the chronic diseases with various challenges for patients and caregivers is spinal cord injury (SCI). The spread and prevalence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been an influential risk factor for abuse. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the rate of abuse in patients with SCI during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study population was all SCI cases in Ilam, Iran. Researcher-made forms and questionnaires with confirmed validity and reliability, including the demographic characteristics, form and perceived abuse researcher-made questionnaire for people with SCI, were used. The perceived abuse questionnaire for patients with SCI was a researcher-made questionnaire designed based on library studies, interviews with patients, and determination of abuse instances. This instrument consists of 20 questions answered as yes (score 1) or no (score 0). After data collection, statistical analyzes were performed using the SPSS software version 16. Results: According to our results, the mean ± SD of the perceived abuse score by caregivers and patients was 8.48 ± 2.31 and 42.45% during the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively. Moreover, the mean ± SD of the age of patients was 62.86 ± 19.15 years, and the patient abuse increased with elevation in age (P = 0, F = 27.42). The possible abuse score was 0 - 20 divided into three categories of low (20, 20.4%), moderate (76, 76.5%), and high (2, 2%). The perceived abuse score was significantly higher among women and patients with a history of more than 10 years of SCI. Abuse prevalence did not have a significant relationship with income and marital status. Regarding age and abuse, our results showed a rise in perceived abuse scores with an increase in age. Conclusions: The present study showed that it is necessary to take measures to prevent abuse in patients with SCI. Moreover, the prevalence of abuse related to COVID-19 in patients with SCI was high. Therefore, preventive actions need to be proposed in this field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/CONTEXT To evaluate the relationship between severity of neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) and functional status, depression, and quality of life in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and to determine the factors associated with developing moderate-to-severe NBD. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING University hospital rehabilitation outpatient clinic. PARTICIPANTS Individuals with traumatic SCI, at least one year post-injury (N = 92). INTERVENTIONS Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction Score, Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Short Form-36 (SF-36). RESULTS In the current sample, we found that half of the individuals with SCI had moderate-to-severe NBD. Individuals with moderate and severe NBD had lower motor FIM (P = 0.008 and P = 0.006, respectively) and SF-36 physical functioning (PF) scale (P = 0.020 and P = 0.031, respectively) scores than individuals with very minor NBD. There was no difference in the BDI scores among individuals with different levels of NBD. Individuals with American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) A injuries were more likely to develop moderate-to-severe NBD than those with AIS C (odds ratio (OR) = 6.52; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-37.79; P = 0.005) or AIS D (OR = 17.19; 95% CI 3.61-81.82; p < 0.001) injuries. CONCLUSION Individuals with moderate-to-severe NBD had higher levels of dependency in activities of daily living and lower SF-36 PF scale scores than individuals with very minor NBD. Among individuals with SCI, completeness of injury was a significant factor for developing moderate-to-severe NBD.

Abstract
Introduction The current study evaluated the analgesic effects of bumetanide as an adjunctive in the management of neuropathic pain following Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). The peripheral expression of Na-K-Cl Cotransporter-1 (NKCC1) and K-Cl Cotransporter-2 (KCC2) genes in polymorphonuclear lymphocytes (PMLs) was assessed as a possible biomarker indicating central mechanisms underlying the observed response. Methods Through an open-label, single-arm, pilot trial of bumetanide (2 mg/d), an add-on treatment was conducted on 14 SCI patients for 19 weeks. This study consisted of 3 phases: pre-treatment (1 month), titration (3 weeks), and active treatment (4 months). Ultimately, 9 patients completed the study. The primary outcome variables were the endpoint pain score using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and also the short-form of the McGill pain questionnaire. Secondary endpoints included the short-form of the health survey that assesses the quality of life. Blood samples were collected and used for determining the expression of NKCC1 and KCC2 genes in transcription and translation levels. Results Bumetanide treatment significantly decreased average pain intensity according to the NRS and the short-form of the McGill pain questionnaire scores. Baseline expression of KCC2 protein was low between groups and increased significantly following treatment (P<0.05). In the current study, pain improvement was accompanied by the greater mean change from the baseline (improvement) for the overall quality of life. Conclusion These data highlighted the analgesic effect of bumetanide on neuropathic pain and indicated the potential role of the upregulation of KCC2 protein and involvement of GABAergic disinhibition in producing neuropathic pain.

Abstract
Background Cellular transplantations have promising effects on treating spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and Schwann cells (SCs), which have safety alongside their complementary characteristics, are suggested to be the two of the best candidates in SCI treatment. In this study, we assessed the safety and possible outcomes of intrathecal co-transplantation of autologous bone marrow MSC and SC in patients with subacute traumatic complete SCI. Methods Eleven patients with complete SCI (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS); grade A) were enrolled in this study during the subacute period of injury. The patients received an intrathecal autologous combination of MSC and SC and were followed up for 12 months. We assessed the neurological changes by the American Spinal Injury Association’s (ASIA) sensory-motor scale, functional recovery by spinal cord independence measure (SCIM-III), and subjective changes along with adverse events (AE) with our checklist. Furthermore, electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction velocity (NCV), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and urodynamic study (UDS) were conducted for all the patients at the baseline, 6 months, and 1 year after the intervention. Results Light touch AIS score alterations were approximately the same as the pinprick changes (11.6 ± 13.1 and 12 ± 13, respectively) in 50% of the cervical and 63% of the lumbar-thoracic patients, and both were more than the motor score alterations (9.5 ± 3.3 in 75% of the cervical and 14% of the lumbar-thoracic patients). SCIM III total scores (21.2 ± 13.3) and all its sub-scores (“respiration and sphincter management” (15 ± 9.9), “mobility” (9.5 ± 13.3), and “self-care” (6 ± 1.4)) had statistically significant changes after cell injection. Our findings support that the most remarkable positive, subjective improvements were in trunk movement, equilibrium in standing/sitting position, the sensation of the bladder and rectal filling, and the ability of voluntary voiding. Our safety evaluation revealed no systemic complications, and radiological images showed no neoplastic overgrowth, syringomyelia, or pseudo-meningocele. Conclusion The present study showed that autologous SC and bone marrow-derived MSC transplantation at the subacute stage of SCI could reveal statistically significant improvement in sensory and neurological functions among the patients. It appears that using this combination of cells is safe and effective for clinical application to spinal cord regeneration during the subacute period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Assessing the validity of generic instruments across different clinical contexts is an important area of methodological research in economic evaluation and outcomes measurement. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to examine the empirical validity of a generic, preference-based capability wellbeing instrument (ICECAP-A) in the context of spinal cord injury. METHODS This study consisted of a secondary analysis of data collected using an online cross-sectional survey. The survey included questions regarding demographics, injury classifications and characteristics, secondary health conditions, quality of life and wellbeing, and functioning in activities of daily living. Analysis comprised the descriptive assessment of Spearman's rank correlations between item-/dimension-level data for the ICECAP-A and four preference-based health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instruments, and discriminant and convergent validity approaches to examine 21 evidence-informed or theoretically derived constructs. Constructs were defined using participant and injury characteristics and responses to a range of health, wellbeing and functioning outcomes. RESULTS Three hundred sixty-four individuals completed the survey. Mean index score for the ICECAP-A was 0.761; 12 (3%) individuals reported full capability (upper anchor; score = 1), and there were no reports of zero capabilities (lower anchor; score = 0). The strongest correlations were dominated by items and dimensions on the comparator (HRQoL) instruments that are non-health aspects of quality of life, such as happiness and control over one's life (including self-care). Of 21 hypothesised constructs, 19 were confirmed in statistical tests, the exceptions being the exploratory hypotheses regarding education and age at injury. CONCLUSION The ICECAP-A is an empirically valid outcome measure for assessing capability wellbeing in people with spinal cord injury living in a community setting. The extent to which the ICECAP-A provides complementary information to preference-based HRQoL instruments is dependent on the comparator.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional survey of the Neurogenic Bladder Research Group (NBRG) registry; a multicenter prospective observation study. OBJECTIVES To assess how patient-reported urinary tract infections (PRUTIs) in spinal cord injury (SCI) affect quality of life (QOL). SETTING Multiple United States hospitals. METHODS 1479 participants with SCI were asked about neurogenic bladder-related QOL. Eligibility: age ≥ 18 years with acquired SCI. PRUTI frequency over the last year was classified as 0, 1-3, 4-6, or >6. Four UTI QOL domains were assessed: (1) UTIs limited daily activities, (2) UTIs caused increased muscle spasms, (3) UTIs would not go away, and (4) UTIs made me avoid going out. Multivariable regression identified variables associated with poor QOL. RESULTS PRUTI frequency was 0 in 388 patients (26%), 1-3 in 677 (46%), 4-6 in 223 (15%), and more than 6 in 190 (13%). Increasing PRUTI rate was independently associated with worse QOL for all four questions. Compared with those with 0 PRUTIs, participants reporting >6 were more likely to limit daily activities (OR 9.0 [95% CI 8.1-21.2] p < 0.0001), experience increased muscle spasms (OR 12.4 [95% CI 7.5-20.6] p < 0.0001), perceive a UTI would not go away (OR 30.1 [95% CI 15.0-60.4] p < 0.0001), and avoid going out because of UTIs (OR 7.2 [95% CI 4.2-12.4] p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS An increasing rate of PRUTIs is independently associated with worse QOL. Thorough evaluation and treatment may improve QOL in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify and classify quality of life (QoL) tools for assessing the influence of neurogenic bladder after spinal cord injury/disease (SCI). DESIGN Systematic Review Methods: Medline/Pubmed, CINAHL, and PsycInfo were searched using terms related to SCI, neurogenic bladder and QoL. Studies that assessed the influence neurogenic bladder on QoL (or related construct) in samples consisting of ≥50% individuals with SCI were included. Two independent reviewers screened titles and abstracts of 368 identified references; 118 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility, and 42 studies were included. Two reviewers independently classified outcomes as objective (societal viewpoint) or subjective (patient perspective) using a QoL framework. RESULTS Ten objective QoL measures were identified, with the Medical Outcomes Short Form (SF-36/SF-12) used most frequently. Fourteen subjective QoL measures were identified; 8 were specific to neurogenic bladder. Psychometric evidence for SCI-specific neurogenic bladder QoL tools was reported for the Quality of Life Index (QLI), Qualiveen, Bladder Complications Scale, Spinal Cord Injury-Quality of Life (SCI-QOL) Bladder Management Difficulties, and the SCI-QOL Bladder Management Difficulties-Short Form. The QLI and Qualiveen showed sensitivity to neurogenic bladder in experimental designs. CONCLUSION Several objective and subjective tools exist to assess the influence of neurogenic bladder on QoL in SCI. The QLI and Qualiveen, both subjective tools, were the only validated SCI-specific tools that showed sensitivity to neurogenic bladder. Further validation of existing subjective SCI-specific outcomes is needed. Research to validate objective measures of QoL would be useful for informing practice and policy related to resource allocation for bladder care post-SCI.

Abstract
[Purpose] The present study investigated the physical and mental effects of plant factory
work in individuals with cervical spinal cord injury and the use of a newly developed
agricultural working environment. [Subjects] Six males with C5–C8 spinal cord injuries and
10 healthy volunteers participated. [Methods] Plant factory work involved three simulated
repetitive tasks: sowing, transplantation, and harvesting. Surface electromyography was
performed in the dominant upper arm, upper trapezius, anterior deltoid, and biceps brachii
muscles. Subjects’ moods were monitored using the Profile of Mood States. [Results] Five
males with C6–C8 injuries performed the same tasks as healthy persons; a male with a C5
injury performed fewer repetitions of tasks because it took longer. Regarding muscle
activity during transplantation and harvesting, subjects with spinal cord injury had
higher values for the upper trapezius and anterior deltoid muscles compared with healthy
persons. The Profile of Mood States vigor scores were significantly higher after tasks in
subjects with spinal cord injury. [Conclusion] Individuals with cervical spinal cord
injury completed the plant factory work, though it required increased time and muscle
activity. For individuals with C5–C8 injuries, it is necessary to develop an appropriate
environment and assistive devices to facilitate their work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research has examined the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and mental health of persons with spinal cord injury (SCI), but the majority of the research has taken place in the United States, Western Europe, and other developed countries. Limited research has been conducted with persons with SCI in Latin America. OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship between HRQOL and mental health in persons with SCI from Neiva, Colombia. DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Participants were recruited from the Foundation for the Integral Development of People with Disabilities, a nonprofit community organization for persons with disabilities. PARTICIPANTS Forty persons with SCI from Neiva, Colombia. METHODS Caregivers completed the Spanish versions of questionnaires. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Participants completed self-report measures of HRQOL (SF-36 Health Questionnaire) and mental health (Satisfaction with Life Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and State Trait Anxiety Inventory). RESULTS The hypothesis that higher HRQOL would be related to better mental health found robust support, as the canonical correlation between these 2 sets of variables uncovered that 50.4% of the variance was shared, such that persons with lower HRQOL had reduced mental health. Within this canonical correlation, anxiety, fatigue, and general health loaded most highly, suggesting that persons with SCI who experienced lower energy and reduced general health tended to have high anxiety. Additionally, 9 out of the 18 bivariate correlations between these 2 variable sets were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS In Latin America, SCI rehabilitation services are extremely sparse and rarely include interventions that target postinjury mental health. The current study suggests that mental health issues in patients with reduced HRQOL warrant attention in SCI rehabilitation services, especially in this region.

Abstract
PURPOSE The validity of the SF-6D, a preference-based measure of health-related quality of life, is not well explored in the context of spinal cord injury (SCI). The aim of this analysis was to assess appropriate measurement properties of the SF-6D in a sample of individuals living with SCI. METHODS Longitudinal data from the Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Registry were used. Responses to the 36-item short-form health survey were transformed into SF-6D utility scores. We investigated practicality, floor and ceiling effects, and responsiveness to change. Responsiveness to change was explored using three different anchors that reflected changes in self-reported health, functional independence, and life satisfaction. Discriminative validity was assessed by ten a priori defined hypotheses, with a distinction made between 'strong' and 'weak' hypotheses. RESULTS Three hundred and fifty-eight individuals with SCI were included in this analysis. Practicality was deemed acceptable based on a completion rate of 94%. The SF-6D showed low responsiveness to detect important health changes over time, and differences in responsiveness were found between individuals with paraplegia and tetraplegia. All five strong hypotheses and three weak hypotheses were confirmed. CONCLUSION The SF-6D demonstrated good practicality and discriminative validity in this sample. The failure to detect self-reported and clinically important health changes requires further consideration. Comparative performance of the SF-6D (i.e., how the SF-6D performs against other preference-based measures) is unknown in the SCI context and requires further research.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate and compare the effects of two different rehabilitation therapies on spinal cord injured (SCI) rats: neuromuscular electrical stimulation which is timed to robotic treadmill training (NMES+RTT) and RTT alone. Several electromyography (EMG) based variables were measured, but most did not change significantly after treatment, contrary to observations of overall qualitative stepping ability. However, when the variables are viewed in multi-dimensional space, there are visible differences between changes after NMES+RTT vs. those after RTT only. Principal component analysis (PCA) and k-means clustering were applied to the multivariate data. The data in principal component space was significantly separated, according to the Euclidean distance. PCA also provided a straightforward tool for selecting which combination of measures to compare. The measures which best separated out the differences between NMES+RTT and RTT were percentage of steps associated with bursts, burst-to-step latency, and the standard deviation of this latency, even though these measures did not always show the greatest statistical significance individually. Thus, the rehabilitative effects of NMES+RTT are not necessarily reflected in individual EMG measures, but rather in a combination of the measures representing a multi-dimensional space.
