The influence of supportive work environment on work-related stress and conflict management style among emergency care nurses: A descriptive correlational study

BACKGROUND

Stress and conflict in emergency departments are inevitable but can be managed. A supportive work environment is key to helping emergency care providers, especially nurses, constructively manage work-related stress and conflict.

AIM

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of supportive work environments on work-related stress and conflict management style among emergency care nurses.

METHODS

A descriptive correlational research design was utilized. Data were collected from 221 staff nurses recruited from two university hospital emergency departments in Alexandria, Egypt. Three instruments were used: (1) perceived organizational support scale, (2) nurses' occupational stressors scale, and (3) conflict management style inventory.

RESULTS

There was a highly significant correlation between supportive work environments and work-related stress (p = .000) and a significant correlation between supportive work environments and conflict management style (p = .026). Supportive work environments had a significant inverse negative relationship with work-related stress experienced by nurses (p = .001) and accounted for 51% of variance in work-related stress. Meanwhile, supportive work environments had a significant positive relationship with conflict management styles of nurses (p = .026). Work-related stress had a significant relationship with nurses' conflict management style (p = .000) and accounted for 45% of the variance in conflict management style.

LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION

The style of conflict management modeled by staff within emergency departments can positively or negatively influence the work environment and level of work-related stress. There is a necessity to cultivate a supportive culture for nurses in emergency departments to develop skills for constructive conflict management styles to reduce work-related stress.

Collaborative leadership and productive work performance: The mediating role of nurses' innovative behavior

AIM

This study aims to explore the relationship between collaborative leadership and nurses' productive work performance as well as the mediating role of nurses' innovative behavior in this relationship.

BACKGROUND

Collaborative leadership is an imperative necessity in the contemporary turbulent healthcare environment as it provides a collaborative atmosphere where innovative behavior and productive performance of nurses are fostered, hence moving healthcare organizations toward competitiveness and sustainability.

METHOD

A cross-sectional descriptive correlational exploratory research design was used to conduct the study. Data were collected from 550 nurses recruited from three large university hospitals in Alexandria, Egypt, using three instruments, namely, interprofessional collaborative leadership in healthcare teams scale, productive work performance questionnaire, and innovative behavior inventory. The instruments of the study are Likert-type questionnaires through which nurses' perspectives regarding study variables were investigated. We used descriptive statistics, inferential statistics as well as structured equation modeling (SEM).

RESULTS

SEM revealed that collaborative leadership accounted for 83% of the variance of individual productive work performance and 77% of the variance of nurses' innovative behavior. Moreover, nurses' innovative behavior partially mediates the relationship between collaborative leadership and their productive work performance.

CONCLUSION

Collaborative leadership practices are powerful strategies to enhance the innovative behavior of nurses and sustain their productive work performance.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY

Fostering a collaborative atmosphere in workplace is mandatory for nurses' innovativeness. Replacing hierarchal leadership styles with collaborative ones is a promising strategy to enhance the productive performance of nurses. Healthcare managers and leaders could cultivate an interprofessional collaborative culture in the workplace in order to sustain productivity and eradicate counterproductive work behaviors among healthcare providers.

Psychometric Properties of the Chinese Version of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy - Palliative Care (FACIT-Pal) in Patients With Advanced Cancer

CONTEXT

The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Palliative Care (FACIT-Pal) has been widely used in assessing the quality of life (QOL) of patients with life-limiting illness. However, the Chinese version of the FACIT-Pal has not been psychometrically validated yet.

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to psychometrically validate the FACIT-Pal in Chinese patients with advanced cancer.

METHODS

160 patients with advanced cancer in mainland China participated in this cross-sectional study. The scalability of the instrument was determined by the item-total correlations and the reliability was tested by examining the Cronbach's alpha coefficients. The construct and concurrent validity of the FACIT-Pal were also examined.

RESULTS

The item-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.25 to 0.72 (P < .01). Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the Chinese version of the FACIT-Pal was 0.94, ranging from 0.78 to 0.89 for subscales. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) results provided support for the measurement structure of the 26-item Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the 19-item palliative care subscale identified five factors accounting for 62.21% of the total variance. Total/subscale scores of the FACIT-Pal were positively correlated with that of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being 12 Item Scale (FACIT-Sp-12) (r = 0.338-0.811, P < .01), as well as with the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) scores (r = 0.163-0.273, P < .05), except for the correlation between social/family well-being subscale score and KPS score.

CONCLUSION

The Chinese version of the FACIT-Pal demonstrates desirable psychometric properties for evaluating QOL in Chinese patients with advanced cancer.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of life and accessing rehabilitation services among patients with spinal cord injury and their fear of COVID-19

BACKGROUND

The unanticipated coronavirus disease (COVID-19) had a negative effect on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and made significant changes in their daily routine. Patients with SCI face additional health risks, especially mental, behavioral, and physical. Without regular physiotherapy sessions, patients' psychological and functional abilities can deteriorate, and complications can occur. There is little information available about the impact of COVID-19 on the quality of life of patients with SCI, and their access to rehabilitation services during the pandemic.

OBJECTIVE

This study was designed to examine the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of life of patients with SCI and also their fear of COVID-19. The pandemic's impact on the accessibility of rehabilitation services and attendance at physiotherapy sessions in one Chinese hospital were also documented.

DESIGN

An observational study based on an online survey.

SETTING

Outpatients clinic at the rehabilitation department of Wuhan's Tongji Hospital.

PARTICIPANTS

People who had been diagnosed with a spinal cord injury (SCI) and who were receiving regular medical monitoring as outpatients at the rehabilitation department were invited to participate in our study (n = 127).

INTERVENTION

Not applicable.

OUTCOME MEASURES

A 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12) designed to measure participants' quality of life before and during the pandemic. Their fear of COVID-19 was quantified using the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S). Demographic and medical status information was extracted from their medical records. Their use of rehabilitation services and attendance at physical therapy sessions was also documented.

RESULTS

Seventy-nine patients with SCI completed the SF-12 and FCV-19 scale. The mental and physical aspects of the participants' quality of life declined significantly, during the epidemic compared to the pre-epidemic period. More than half of the participants have experienced fear of COVID-19 based on FCV-19S. Most received only irregular physical therapy during routine checkups. Worry about virus transmission was the most common cause cited for not attending regular physical therapy sessions.

CONCLUSIONS

The quality of life of these Chinese patients with SCI declined during the pandemic. Most of the participants were shown a high level of fear of COVID-19 and were classified as having an intense fear of COVID-19, in addition to the impact of the pandemic on their access to rehabilitation services and attendance at physical therapy sessions.

Development and reliability and validity test of the Fear of Cancer Scale (FOCS)

OBJECTIVE

To develop a Fear of Cancer Scale (FOCS) for non-cancer populations.

METHODS

FOCS was developed by classical measurement theory. A total of 15 college students were invited to conduct semi-structured interviews. Seven experts were invited for expert consultation. A total of 2012 Chinese college students who had completed the electronic questionnaire on WJX.cn platform was included. The reliability and validity of FOCS were verified. Multiple linear regression analysis was adopted to explore the influencing factors of cancer fear among college students and further verify the validity of FOCS.

RESULTS

There were 17 items in the FOCS, including two subscales - direct fear (8 items), and indirect fear (9 items). FOCS had good validity and reliability. Multiple linear regression showed that GAD-7 score, CSDS score, negative coping score, positive coping score, guardian's highest education, gender, life satisfaction, nationality and major were the influencing factors of cancer fear (p < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

The 17-item FOCS was a reliable and valid measure to examine the level of cancer fear in non-cancer populations.

Association of Sociodemographic Factors, Breast Cancer Fear, and Perceived Self-Efficacy With Breast Cancer Screening Behaviors Among Middle-Aged Nigerian Women

Introduction:

Breast cancer (BC) is a major public health problem among women. However, BC screening uptake is abysmally low among Nigerian women. This study evaluated the association of BC fear and perceived self-efficacy with BC screening (clinical breast exam [CBE] and mammography) among middle-aged Nigerian women.

Methods:

A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among middle-aged women in Enugu State, southeast Nigeria. The data were collected between September 2019 and February 2020. The BC screening uptake, fear, and self-efficacy were assessed using the validated Breast Cancer Screening Questionnaire (BCSQ), Champion Breast Cancer Fear Scale (CBCFS), and Champion’s Mammography Self-Efficacy Scale (CMSES). Data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages, chi-square test, and univariate analysis of variance. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine independent associations between selected sociodemographic factors, cancer fear, perceived self-efficacy, and BC screening.

Results:

The mean age of the participants was 55.3 years (SD: 5.75). More than half of the women (51%) reported having a BC screening in the past 12 months. However, only 12.5% and 16.9% reported having a CBE or mammogram in the past 12 months. The prevalence of a high, moderate, and low level of fear was 68%, 22.3%, and 9.8%, respectively. The prevalence of a high, moderate, and low self-efficacy level was 50.6%, 37.5%, and 12.0%, respectively. The multivariable logistics regression analysis showed that women aged 50-59 years and 60-64 years were 3.5 times (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 3.50, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.07-5.89, P < .0001), and 5.92 times (AOR = 5.92 95% CI: 2.63-13.35, P < .0001), respectively, more likely to perform mammogram than those aged 40-49 years. Women with a high level of self-efficacy were 2.68 times (AOR = 2.68, 95% CI: 1.15-6.26, P < .0001) more likely to use mammographic screening than those with low self-efficacy. Although not statistically significant, women with a moderate level of BC fear were 0.56 times less likely to use mammogram than women with a low level of BC fear.

Conclusion:

A low proportion of women underwent CBE or mammography. Women had a high level of BC fear and a moderate level of self-efficacy for BC screening. The findings emphasize the need for health educational and psychosocial interventions that improve self-efficacy and promote regular BC screening among middle-aged women.

Psychometric Evaluation of the Arabic Version of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale

Fear is a central emotional response to imminent threats such as the coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19). The Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) assesses the severity of fear towards COVID-19. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the FCV-19S. Using a forward-backward translation, the FCV-19S was translated into Arabic. An online survey using the Arabic versions of FCV-19S and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was administered. Reliability and concurrent and confirmatory validity were examined. The dataset consisted of 693 Saudi participants. The internal consistency of the Arabic FCV-19S was satisfactory (α = .88), with sound concurrent validity indicated by significant and positive correlations with HADS (r = .66). The unidimensional structure of the FCV-19S was confirmed. The Arabic version of the FCV-19S is psychometrically robust and can be used in research assessing the psychological impact of COVID-19 among a Saudi adult population.
