Virtual global health education partnerships for health professional students: a scoping review

INTRODUCTION

Although there is rising interest in virtual global health (GH) education in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been no report on the body of literature describing virtual education partnerships for health professional students. This scoping review examines virtual GH partnerships involving health professional students, including any barriers identified or best practices and ways to address them.

METHODS

We searched PubMed for studies describing virtual GH education partnerships using keywords related to GH, virtual learning, and partnerships. Inclusion criteria were that the activity was virtual, involved health professional students in two or more countries, and was reported in English or Spanish. In-person clinical electives and interventions that had not yet occurred were excluded. Study quality was assessed using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI).

RESULTS

The search algorithm yielded 308 articles. Seventeen studies met full inclusion criteria. Four studies described asynchronous formats, whereas 13 were synchronous. Common challenges included scheduling challenges, language barriers, and technological limitations. Suggested improvements included having increased faculty support and expanding partnerships to multiple languages. The median MERSQI score was 8.25 out of 18 possible points.

CONCLUSION

There are limited studies investigating the effectiveness of virtual GH education partnerships, and more robust evaluation is needed to further understand the optimal role of virtual education in teaching GH skills. Despite logistical challenges, virtual partnerships can provide innovative GH education through bidirectional educational exchanges that students find valuable.

The effect of crossword puzzle activity used in distance education on nursing students' problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills: A comparative study

AIM

The study was planned to determine the effect of crossword puzzle activity in distance education on nursing students' problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills.

BACKGROUND

In online education, increasing nursing students' learning skills, motivations and participation is important.

DESIGN

The study is a randomized-controlled trial.

METHOD

The study sample consisted of 132 nursing students registered to the Pediatric Nursing distance course in the 2020-2021 academic year. 20 students who were assigned to the control group did not agree to participate in the study and did not fill in the data form. Accordingly, the study was completed with the participation of 112 students, with 66 students in the experimental group and 46 students in the control group. In the 14-week distance education, 20-question crossword puzzle activity per unit was applied to the students in the experimental group. The standards for reporting consort guidelines for reporting parallel group randomized trials were used to report this research. The students in the control group were taught in the form of presentation. At the beginning and end of the study, CDMNS and PSI were applied to the students. Ethics committee approval (Number: 2021/79) was obtained from the relevant university to conduct the research.

RESULTS

A statistically significant difference was found between pretest and posttest scores of the experimental group in PSI and CDMNS scales (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Crossword puzzle activity used in distance education developed the students' problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills.

Dialogues on nursing curriculum and pedagogy: a critical planning activity for global educational collaboration

PURPOSE

We describe the experience of a collaborative, dialogical process on nursing pedagogy to identify the best process for creating a mutually beneficial international nursing education exchange.

APPROACH

Faculty from two universities in Sucre, Bolivia and in Seattle, Washington, US engaged in planned virtual dialogues to share their nursing curricula, course content, teaching methodologies, and contextual challenges and strengths.

RESULTS

From the dialogues, a thematic analysis using a modified conventional content analysis approach was completed, and four themes emerged: 1) similarities in course content, pedagogy, and curricular challenges; 2) differences in teaching competencies; 3) teaching methodologies responsive to national trends; and 4) benefits from and alternatives to the use of educational technology. Early dialogues among participants allowed them to discern areas of need and interest for future planning.

IMPLICATIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE

Intentional academic dialogues should be the first step to enter in an exchange program to enable participants from different hemispheres to contribute equally as partners in the formation of nurses able to respond the current global health concerns.

Virtual global health in graduate medical education: a systematic review

OBJECTIVES

To synthesize recent virtual global health education activities for graduate medical trainees, document gaps in the literature, suggest future study, and inform best practice recommendations for global health educators.

METHODS

We systematically reviewed articles published on virtual global health education activities from 2012-2021 by searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, ERIC, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses A&I. We performed bibliography review and search of conference and organization websites. We included articles about primarily virtual activities targeting for health professional trainees. We collected and qualitatively analyzed descriptive data about activity type, evaluation, audience, and drivers or barriers. Heterogeneity of included articles did not lend to formal quality evaluation.

RESULTS

Forty articles describing 69 virtual activities met inclusion criteria. 55% of countries hosting activities were high-income countries. Most activities targeted students (57%), with the majority (53%) targeting trainees in both low- to middle- and high-income settings. Common activity drivers were course content, organization, peer interactions, and online flexibility. Common challenges included student engagement, technology, the internet, time zones, and scheduling. Articles reported unanticipated benefits of activities, including wide reach; real-world impact; improved partnerships; and identification of global health practice gaps.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first review to synthesize virtual global health education activities for graduate medical trainees. Our review identified important drivers and challenges to these activities, the need for future study on activity preferences, and considerations for learners and educators in low- to middle-income countries. These findings may guide global health educators in their planning and implementation of virtual activities.

Pediatric Chief Resident Exchange Program-A Novel Method to Share Educational Ideas Across Training Programs

BACKGROUND

Pediatric residency programs offer many conferences and activities to meet the educational needs of their residents. We developed and assessed the Pediatric Chief Resident Exchange Program where pediatric chief residents visited another institution for a day with the goal of sharing educational and curricular innovations between residency programs in an experiential manner.

APPROACH/INNOVATION

Pediatric chief residents participated in various activities during the exchange including educational conferences and discussions with residency program leadership at the host institutions. Surveys were administered to all participating chiefs to determine if any changes to educational conferences or curriculum were made or planned to be made at their home program based upon what they observed at the other institution and to have chiefs reflect on what they gained from the experience.

RESULTS

Twenty-eight chief residents from 9 programs participated in the exchange program over 3 academic years (2015-2018). All respondents felt the exchange experience was worthwhile. The majority (67%) of programs planned to implement a change at their institution based on participation in the exchange with over half actually making a change by the end of the academic year. Participating chiefs gained a sense of camaraderie, appreciated that other programs experienced similar struggles, and developed further insight into the chief resident role.

DISCUSSION

The Pediatric Chief Resident Exchange Program is a novel method of sharing educational practices between institutions that can lead to curricular changes at participating programs. It can also be an opportunity for chief resident professional development.

Fostering Global Health Practice: An Undergraduate Nursing Student Exchange and International Service-Learning Program

BACKGROUND

Nurses increasingly are identified as key health care members on global health initiatives, and nursing curricula should address this competency to prepare students to work in a global environment. This article will share how processes and structures were established for an international undergraduate nursing student exchange and service-learning experience between two schools of nursing.

METHOD

The goals of the project were to (a) implement an annual nursing student exchange of approximately 3 weeks in length; (b) select eight students from each school, accompanied by a faculty member, to participate; and (c) provide opportunities for students to participate in service-learning assessments in identified communities.

RESULTS

To date, an annual exchange is in its fourth year of existence.

CONCLUSION

An international service-learning opportunity is one way to improve nursing students' ability to provide culturally competent health care. [J Nurs Educ. 2019;58(4):235-239.].
