The Use of Mobile Messaging for Telecommunications with Patients in Ophthalmology: A Systematic Review

Background: Communication and concordance between patients and providers are crucial for improved outcomes and disease prevention. Mobile health strategies have been shown to improve patient accessibility and convenience. Mobile messaging is one strategy that has demonstrated varying degrees of effectiveness in patient care. The aim of this review is to investigate methods, outcomes, and conclusions of studies that have assessed mobile messaging interventions in ophthalmology. Methods: A qualitative systematic review of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases was conducted to identify studies that investigated the implementation and efficacy of mobile messaging services in ophthalmology practice. Included articles were categorized based on study content: appointment attendance, patient preference and willingness, education, concordance, and other clinical outcomes. Three tools were used to assess for potential bias. Results: Out of a total of 3,655 unique titles retrieved, 15 articles were included in the final qualitative synthesis after abstract and full-text screening. Included studies were published between 2008 and 2020 from seven different countries and across various contexts. All but one study found that the use of mobile messaging in ophthalmology care led to improved process measures or patient outcomes. Evidence for a positive effect was the strongest for appointment follow-up. Survey and feedback data suggest that patients, more so younger patients, are open to mobile message interventions. Conclusion: Mobile messaging interventions can play a role in improving appointment attendance, patient education, and patient practices for ophthalmology patients. Further study is necessary to determine the effectiveness of this tool across various groups and settings.

Lumbar Movement Dysfunction Based on Movement Control Impairment Classification System in Those Who Do and Do Not Develop Transient Low Back Pain During Prolonged Sitting

OBJECTIVE

Long-term sitting triggers movement-related disorders. We used a movement control impairment (MCI) system to investigate lumbar movement dysfunction in those who did and did not develop transient low back pain (LBP) during prolonged sitting.

METHODS

Twelve patients who did and did not develop transient LBP during sitting for 2 hours were enrolled. We tested the movement control abilities of the 2 groups using 6 MCI tests (12 test items).

RESULTS

The mean MCI test score in the transient LBP developer group was significantly higher than that in the LBP non-developer group (P = .03). Lumbar flexion movement control as the backward rocking test was significantly more common in the transient LBP developer than in the LBP non-developer group (P < .027). Pelvic shifting and asymmetry during side-bending of the trunk were evident in both groups (all P > .05). However, pelvic shifting during side-bending of the trunk was evident only in the LBP group (33%; P = .093).

CONCLUSION

The group exhibiting transient LBP had higher positive MCI test scores and exhibited more asymmetry than the other group. Even the non-LBP group exhibited poor lumbar flexion and rotation. Therefore, subjects with subclinical dysfunction caused by prolonged sitting may require homogenous subgroups classification for the early detection of mechanical risk factors and health and functional interventions.

Biophotonics: the big picture

The 5th International Conference on Biophotonics (ICOB) held April 30 to May 1, 2017, in Fremantle, Western Australia, brought together opinion leaders to discuss future directions for the field and opportunities to consider. The first session of the conference, "How to Set a Big Picture Biophotonics Agenda," was focused on setting the stage for developing a vision and strategies for translation and impact on society of biophotonic technologies. The invited speakers, panelists, and attendees engaged in discussions that focused on opportunities and promising applications for biophotonic techniques, challenges when working at the confluence of the physical and biological sciences, driving factors for advances of biophotonic technologies, and educational opportunities. We share a summary of the presentations and discussions. Three main themes from the conference are presented in this position paper that capture the current status, opportunities, challenges, and future directions of biophotonics research and key areas of applications: (1) biophotonics at the nano- to microscale level; (2) biophotonics at meso- to macroscale level; and (3) biophotonics and the clinical translation conundrum.

Dermatopathology education in the era of modern technology

Continuing technological advances are inevitably impacting the study and practice of dermatopathology (DP). We are seeing the transition from glass slide microscopy to virtual microscopy, which is serving both as an accessible educational medium for medical students, residents and fellows in the form of online databases and atlases, as well as a research tool to better inform us regarding the development of visual diagnostic expertise. Expansion in mobile technology is simplifying slide image attainment and providing greater opportunities for phone- and tablet-based microscopy, including teledermatopathology instruction and consultation in resource-poor areas with lack of specialists. Easily accessible mobile and computer-based applications ("apps"), including myDermPath and Clearpath, are providing an interactive medium for DP instruction. The Internet and social networking sites are enabling rapid global communication of DP information and image-sharing, promoting collaborative diagnostic research and scholastic endeavors.

Remote autopsy services: A feasibility study on nine cases

Introduction We have conducted a feasibility study on remote autopsy services in order to increase the flexibility of the service with benefits for teaching and interdepartmental collaboration. Methods Three senior staff pathologists, one senior autopsy technician and one junior resident participated in the study. Nine autopsies were performed by the autopsy technician or resident, supervised by the primary pathologist, through the secure, double encrypted video link using Jabber Video (Cisco) with a high-speed broadband connection. The primary pathologist and autopsy room each connected to the secure virtual meeting room using 14″ laptops with in-built cameras (Hewlett-Packard). A portable high-definition web camera (Cisco) was used in the autopsy room. Primary and secondary pathologists independently interpreted and later compared gross findings for the purpose of quality assurance. The video was streamed live only during consultations and interpretation. A satisfaction survey on technical and professional aspects of the study was conducted. Results Independent interpretations of gross findings between primary and secondary pathologists yielded full agreement. A definite cause of death in one complex autopsy was determined following discussions between pathologists and reviews of the clinical notes. Our satisfaction level with the technical and professional aspects of the study was 87% and 97%, respectively. Discussion Remote autopsy services are found to be feasible in the hands of experienced staff, with increased flexibility and interest of autopsy technicians in the service as a result.
