Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether objective measures of oral health and salivary gland irradiation correlates with subjective measures of eating, drinking, and salivation in patients following head and neck radiation therapy (HNRT). METHODS This cross-sectional study included 112 patients following HNRT with a completed patient-reported outcome (PRO) scale. Objective measures at post-HNRT visit included decayed-missing-filled teeth (DMFT) scores, periodontal disease condition, oral hygiene status, dental prosthesis use, and prescribed radiation dose to salivary glands. Data were collected and statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS There was no significant association between PRO scales and dental prosthesis use, periodontal disease, and oral hygiene. Although some significant findings were seen with DMFT and prescribed radiation dose to salivary glands, this explained only very small amounts of the variation in eating, drinking, and salivation measures in these patients. CONCLUSION PRO measures should be integrated in the routine care of patients with head and neck cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A comprehensive understanding of changes in health-related quality of life after head and neck cancer surgery is necessary for effective preoperative counseling. The goal of this study was to perform a longitudinal analysis of postoperative quality of life outcomes after fibula free flap (FFF) mandible reconstruction. METHODS A retrospective review was performed for all patients who underwent oncologic mandible reconstruction with an FFF between 2000 and 2021. Completion of at least one postoperative FACE-Q questionnaire was necessary for inclusion. FACE-Q scores were divided into five time periods for analysis. Functional outcomes measured with speech language pathology (SLP) assessments and tracheostomy and gastrostomy tube status were analyzed at three time points. RESULTS One hundred and nine patients were included. Of these, 68 patients also had at least one SLP assessment. All outcomes as measured by the various FACE-Q scales did not improve significantly from the immediate postoperative time point to the last evaluated time point (p > 0.05). SLP functional outcomes showed some deterioration over time, but these were not significant (p > 0.05). The percentage of patients who required a tracheostomy (18 to 2%, p = 0.002) or gastrostomy tube (25 to 11%, p = 0.035) decreased significantly from the immediate postoperative time point to the last evaluated time point. CONCLUSION Subjective quality of life outcomes do not change significantly with time after oncologic FFF mandible reconstruction. Reconstructive surgeons can use these results to help patients establish appropriate and achievable quality of life goals after surgery. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the impact of specific relevant clinical variables on postoperative quality of life.

Abstract
PURPOSE Segmental mandibulectomy (SM) is a morbid procedure, often indicated in the treatment of oral cavity pathology; however, the effect on quality of life resulting from resection of specific mandibular subsites has not previously been investigated. This study's primary aim was to evaluate differences in Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among patients who underwent segmental mandibulectomy with condylectomy (SMc+) or not (SMc-), and secondarily among patients who underwent SM with symphyseal resection (SMs+) or not (SMs-). METHODS A single-centre cross-sectional study was performed, identifying adults who had undergone SM over a 5-year period. Patients who had disease recurrence, further major head and neck surgery, or any surgery 3 months prior to participating were excluded. Demographic, disease and treatment data were obtained via chart review. Participants completed the European Organisation for Treatment of Cancer 'General' and 'Head and Neck Specific' HRQoL modules. Condylectomy and midline-crossing resection were the primary and secondary predictor variables, while the primary outcome was HRQoL. Study variables were cross tabulated against predictor and outcome variables to identify potential confounders. The association between condylectomy and symphyseal resection on HRQoL was modelled using linear regression and subsequently with identified confounding factors. RESULTS Forty-five enrolled participants completed questionnaires, of which 20 had undergone condylectomy and 14 symphyseal resection. Participants were majority male (68.9%) and on average 60.2 ± 18 years old, having undergone surgery 3.8 ± 1.8 years prior to participation. Prior to adjustment, Condylectomy patients reported significantly worse 'Emotional Function' (mean ± standard deviation) (47.7 ± 25.5 vs 68.4 ± 26.6, P = .02), 'Social Function' (46.3 ± 33.6 vs 61.4 ± 28.9, P = .04) and 'Mouth Opening' (61.1 ± 36.7 vs 29.8 ± 38.3, P = .04) compared to the SMC- group. SMs + patients reported significantly worse scores in 'Social Function' (43.9 ± 30.1 vs 48.3 ± 32,1, P = .03), 'Dry Saliva' (65.1 ± 35.3 vs 38.5 ± 33.9, P < .01) and 'Social Eating' (48.5 ± 45.6 vs 30.8 ± 36.4, P < .01) compared to the SMs-group. Following adjustment only 'emotional function' in the SMc comparison retained significance (P = .04). CONCLUSIONS SM causes anatomical distortion resulting in functional deficit. While the condyle and symphysis are theoretically functionally important, our findings suggest that morbidity associated with their resection may be the result of associated surgical and adjuvant treatment burden.

Abstract
The “commando operation” is an extensive surgical procedure used to treat patients with oral squamous carcinoma and metastasis in the cervical lymph nodes. While the procedure can be curative, it is also very mutilating, which consequently has a major impact on the patient’s quality of life. Several studies showed that the procedure is associated with loss of certain functions, such as impairments in speech, chewing, swallowing, and loss of taste and appetite. Furthermore, some of these impairments and their degree depend on the reconstruction method. However, the data regarding the functional impairments and aesthetic results in patients who underwent the “commando operation” along with the pectoralis major myocutaneus flap reconstruction are still inconclusive. This study included 34 patients that underwent partial glossectomy, ipsilateral modified radical neck dissection, pectoralis major myocutaneus flap reconstruction, and adjuvant radiotherapy. A structured questionnaire was used to evaluate aesthetical results and functional impairments as well as to grade the level of satisfaction with the functional and aesthetic outcomes both by the patients and by the operator. Most of the patients stated that their speech (N = 33; 97%) and salivation (N = 32; 94.2%) severely changed after the operation and that they cannot chew (N = 33; 97%) and swallow (N = 33; 97%) the same as before the operation. Moreover, almost half of the patients (N = 16; 47%) reported that they have severe sleep impairments. However, only few of the included patients stated that they sought professional help regarding the speech (N = 4; 11.7%), eating (N = 5; 14.7%), and sleeping (N = 4; 11.7%) disturbances. Additionally, there was a statistically significant difference between the operator and the patients in the subjective assessment of the aesthetic results (p = 0.047), as operators gave significantly better grades. Our results imply that this procedure and reconstructive method possibly cause impairments that have an impact on the patients’ wellbeing. Moreover, our outcomes also suggest that patients should be educated and rehabilitated after the “commando operation” since most of them were reluctant to seek professional help regarding their impairments. Lastly, sleep deficiency, which was observed after the procedure, should be further explored.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Surgical resection of the maxilla impairs aesthetics, speech, swallowing, and mastication. Maxillary reconstruction is increasingly performed with virtual surgical planning (VSP) to enhance functional dental rehabilitation with a conventional denture or osseointegrated implants. The aim of this study was to determine whether dental status and VSP is associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and function in patients who have undergone maxillectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients who underwent free flap reconstruction or obturation of the maxilla between July 2009 and December 2020. The FACE-Q Head and Neck Cancer (FACE-Q) module, M.D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI), and Speech Handicap Index (SHI) were used to evaluate HRQOL. RESULTS Forty-three patients (response rate 59%) completed questionnaires and 48% underwent dental rehabilitation. In Okay Class II and III defects, adjusting for the effect of radiotherapy and time from surgery, there was a positive association between denture status and FACE-Q smiling (p = 0.020), eating (p = 0.012), smiling (p = 0.015), and MDADI global (p = 0.015), emotional (p = 0.027), functional (p = 0.028), and composite (p = 0.029) scores. VSP was associated with FACE-Q swallowing (p = 0.005), drooling (p = 0.030), eating (p = 0.008), smiling (p = 0.021), MDADI global (p = 0.017), emotional (p = 0.041), functional (p = 0.040), composite (p = 0.038), and SHI total scores (p = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS Dentoalveolar rehabilitation and VSP were associated with higher HRQOL scores relating to eating and drinking, smiling, and speaking.

Abstract
This review explores how human papillomavirus-related oropharyngeal cancer affects health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) and the role patient-reported outcomes (PROs) can play in optimizing treatment. PRO measures (PROMs) are comprehensive, subjective assessments of patients' day-to-day HR-QoL. Developed through a scientifically robust, multistage process, PROMs offer insight into patients' symptoms, function, and satisfaction with care. The use of PROMs can increase symptom awareness, stimulate discussion, and enhance shared decision-making between patients and healthcare providers.

Abstract
Importance Shared decision-making is a partnership between physicians and patients whereby patient values and preferences are incorporated with the best medical evidence. Shared decision-making may reduce decisional conflict, improve value-choice congruence, and increase patient involvement. Despite potential benefit in many key areas of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, both clinical and research focuses on shared decision-making are scarce. Head and neck surgical oncology is of particular interest owing to the frequency by which preference-sensitive decisions must be made. Information used in this review was obtained between January 1 and February 1, 2020. Observations Various conceptual models have been developed in an attempt to define the concept of shared decision-making. More than 40 instruments have endeavored to measure the construct of shared decision-making. However, in head and neck surgery, few studies to date have explicitly done so. Situations of clinical equipoise, such as in the management of indeterminate thyroid nodules and in the treatment of laryngeal cancer, are frequent. In contrast, value-option incongruence may occur when patient values do not align with the most oncologically sound treatment choice, such as when the resection and reconstruction of oral cancer may leave patients with significant sequelae. Several patient decision aids have been developed to improve shared decision-making in specific clinical scenarios, for example, in considering total laryngectomy or primary chemoradiotherapy. Conclusions and Relevance Despite its potential benefit, there is a dearth of research and clinical applications of shared decision-making in head and neck surgery. Shared decision-making represents an area of substantial need in this regard, and additional efforts should be put forth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite reports demonstrating feasibility of immediate dental implant placement in mandibular reconstruction with free fibula flaps for benign disease, this practice is not routinely used in the oncologic setting. The authors aim to demonstrate the safety of immediate dental implant placement for oncologic mandible reconstruction. METHODS In 2017, the authors' center began immediate dental implant placement in free fibula flaps for oncologic patients undergoing mandibulectomy reconstruction. Immediate dental implant placement patients were compared to a historical cohort also reconstructed with computer-aided design and manufacturing technology beginning in 2011 (n = 34) as a noninferiority study design. Primary outcomes of interest included 90-day complications, time to radiotherapy, and time to and number of patients achieving dental restoration. RESULTS Sixty-one patients underwent free fibula flaps following mandibulectomy using computer-aided design and manufacturing. Seventy-two dental implants were placed in the immediate dental implant placement cohort (n = 27). No differences were noted in major or minor 90-day complications between groups (p > 0.05). Radiotherapy was required in 55 percent in the immediate dental implant placement cohort versus 62 percent in the historical cohort, with no significant difference in time to radiotherapy (67.6 days versus 62.2 days, respectively). One dental implant was removed for nonosseointegration noted during vestibuloplasty. Fourteen (51.8 percent) immediate dental implant patients had complete dental restoration at 90 days compared with none in the historical cohort (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Immediate dental implant placement is a safe procedure with an unchanged short-term complication profile and no delay in radiotherapy initiation. Patients undergoing immediate dental implant placement are more likely to complete full dental rehabilitation. Long-term and health-related quality-of-life outcomes remain to be determined. Abstract
BACKGROUND The anterolateral thigh flap (ALT) has proven over time to be one of the best reconstructive workhorses due to its versatility and reliability. Without preoperative imaging, vascular anomalies such as having no sizable perforator are sometimes encountered during dissection. We propose a technique, based on a modified version of the traditional myocutaneous ALT to allow harvest of the flap based on non-sizable perforators. This technique can also enable the splitting of a flap when only one sizable perforator is present. METHODS A retrospective review of patients who received reconstruction with free ALT flap from 2013 to 2019 by the senior author HSS was performed and included all flaps in which non-sizable perforators were harvested. Data collected for analysis included patient demographics, flap size, defect location, inset type, and flap survival. SURGICAL TECHNIQUE Despite detachment of the majority of skin paddle from the muscle, the flap is harvested with a sleeve of areolar tissue containing preferably more than one non-sizable perforator attached to a small muscular segment of the vastus lateralis containing the pedicle. RESULTS A total of 349 ALT flaps were performed during the review period by senior author HSS, and 25 flaps were harvested with non-sizable perforator, 10 of which were to enable a split. There were no total losses and 6 partial losses; 2 were amenable to direct closure after debridement, 1 required skin graft, and 3 required a new flap for wound coverage. Incorporating more than one non-sizable perforator increases the reliability of the flap. This technique should be used with caution in patients with multiple underlying comorbidities and when a flow-through flap is required. We were able to achieve primary closure of all donor sites. CONCLUSIONS It is possible to harvest the anterolateral thigh flap without sizable perforators by conversion to a modified version of the myocutaneous flap. In well-selected patients, using our technique, several non-sizable perforators can reliably perfuse an ALT without the need to use an alternative donor site. This maximizes the number of harvestable ALTs and increases the reconstructive potential by splitting previously "un-splitable" flaps.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The management of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue represents the most demanding treatment planning in head and neck surgery. Ablation followed by free flap reconstruction is considered the gold standard, but not all patients are suitable for this strategy. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive view of surgical reconstruction possibilities in patients not eligible for free flaps. METHODS Following PRISMA recommendations, a systematic literature review was conducted searching for original papers that investigated outcomes of patients treated by surgical ablation for tongue SCC followed by reconstruction with local or pedicled flaps. Selected papers were read and data extracted for qualitative analysis. RESULTS Twenty articles met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The study design was case series in sixteen papers, cohort study in the remaining four. Four different local flaps (BMM, FAMM, NLIF, SMIF) and four regional flaps have been discussed in included studies (IHF, SFIF, SCM, PMMC). CONCLUSION The improved anatomical knowledge makes local flaps a reliable alternative to free tissue transfer in cases requiring small-/medium-sized defects. Regional flaps still represent cornerstones in reconstruction of the tongue. Ease of execution, costs-to-benefit ratio, low-rate complications, minimal donor site morbidity represent the best advantages choosing local/regional flaps.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poly-4-hydroxybutyric acid (P4HB, Phasix™) is a biosynthetic polymer that degrades by hydrolysis that can be woven into a mesh for use in soft tissue reinforcement. Herein, we describe our initial experience performing complex abdominal wall repair (CAWR) utilizing component separation and P4HB mesh as onlay reinforcement. METHODS All patients undergoing CAWR between June 2014 and May 2017 were followed prospectively for postoperative outcomes. Only those patients who underwent components separation with primary repair of the fascial edges followed by onlay of P4HB mesh were included in this study. RESULTS 105 patients (52 male, 53 female; mean age 59.2 years, range 22-84) met inclusion criteria. Mean BMI was 29.1 (range 16-48); 52% patients had prior attempted hernia repair, most with multiple medical comorbidities (71% of patients with ASA 3 or greater). 30% of cases were not clean at the time of repair (CDC class 2 or greater). Median follow-up was 36 months (range 9-63). Eighteen patients (17%) developed a hernia recurrence ranging from 2 to 36 months postoperatively. Five (5%) patients developed a localized superficial infection treated with antibiotics, three (2.8%) required re-operation for non-healing wounds, and six (6%) patients developed seroma. CONCLUSIONS These data demonstrate a relatively low rate of hernia recurrence, seroma, and other common complications of CAWR in a highly morbid patient population. Importantly, the rate of mesh infection was low and no patients required complete mesh removal, even when placed into a contaminated or infected surgical field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study reports long-term head and neck cancer (HNC) patient-reported symptoms using the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory Head and Neck Cancer Module (MDASI-HN) in a large cohort of HNC survivors. METHODS MDASI-HN results were prospectively collected from an institutional survivorship database. Associations with clinicopathologic data were analyzed using χ2 , Mann-Whitney, and univariate regression. RESULTS Nine hundred and twenty-eight patients were included. Forty-six percent had oropharyngeal primary tumors. Eighty-two percent had squamous cell carcinoma. Fifty-six percent of patients had ablative surgery and 81% had radiation therapy as a component of treatment. The most severe symptoms were xerostomia and dysphagia. Symptom scores were worst for hypopharynx and varied by subsite. Patients treated with chemoradiation or surgery followed by radiation ± chemotherapy reported the worst symptoms while patient treated with surgery plus radiation ± chemotherapy reported the worst interference. CONCLUSION HNC survivors describe their long-term symptom burden and inform efforts to improve care many years into survivorship.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The anterolateral thigh free flap is one of the most commonly used flaps in reconstructive procedures. The purpose of this study was to assess this new classification of chimeric anterolateral thigh free flaps. METHODS Sixty-five patients underwent free anterolateral thigh chimeric free flap reconstruction of defects in the head and neck region. We summarized the anatomic features of perforators, including the number and origin of the perforators. RESULTS Sixty-five cases of femoral anterolateral double island flaps were divided into 3 types: trunk type (type I), 11 cases (16.9%), in which the perforators of two flaps originated in the descending branch and the transverse branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery; branch type (type II), 45 cases (69.3%), in which both the perforators originated in the descending branch or the transverse branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery; and bifurcation type (type III), 9 cases (13.8%), in which two perforators originated in the bifurcation of one perforator that originated in the descending branch or the transverse branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery. All 65 flaps survived and none showed partial necrosis. CONCLUSIONS The anterolateral thigh chimeric flap can be divided into 3 types: trunk type (I type), branch type (II type) and bifurcation type (III type).

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The head and neck cancer (HNC) survivorship experience is unique among cancer populations. This review seeks to explore the HNC survivor experience associated with altered upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) function using principles of survivorship. RECENT FINDINGS HNC survivors experience complex physical, functional, and psychosocial challenges related to UADT dysfunction. Interventions need to address all of these dimensions being mindful of the survivor experience. Studies reveal related unmet needs of both HNC survivors and their family members. An expose of the HNC survivorship experience is timely since 2016/2017 contains the release of landmark position papers and guidelines in the field. These address the unique challenges faced by the HNC population, their management, and the triad psychosocial, functional, and physical survivor burden. Such developments will drive future care. SUMMARY The head and neck survivorship experience is characterized by complex changes with broad impact when examined in an experiential framework. HNC survivor care demands clinical excellence from multiple disciplines that are positioned to enact recent HNC guidelines and adopt survivorship principles. Future research in this population that explores experiential aspects of altered UADT function would be valuable in informing clinical practice. A biopsychosocial framework is presented for conceptualizing the HNC survivorship experience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Existing patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) used to assess patients with head and neck cancer have methodologic and content deficiencies. Herein, the development of a PROM that meets a range of clinical and research needs across head and neck oncology is described. METHODS After development of the conceptual framework, which involved a literature review, semistructured patient interviews, and expert input, patients with head and neck cancer who were treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center were recruited by their surgeon. The FACE-Q Head and Neck Cancer Module was completed by patients in the clinic or was sent by mail. Rasch measurement theory analysis was used for item selection for final scale development and to examine reliability and validity. Scale scores for surgical defect and adjuvant therapy were compared with the cohort average to assess clinical applicability. RESULTS The sample consisted of 219 patients who completed the draft scales. Fourteen independently functioning scales were analyzed. Item fit was good for all 102 items, and all items had ordered thresholds. Scale reliability was acceptable (person separation index was >0.75 for all scales; Cronbach α values were >.87 for all scales; test-retest ranged from 0.86 to 0.96). The scales performed well in a clinically predictable way, demonstrating functional and psychosocial differences across disease sites and with adjuvant therapy. CONCLUSIONS The scales forming the FACE-Q Head and Neck Cancer Module were found to be clinically relevant and scientifically sound. This new PROM now is validated and ready for use in research and clinical care.

Abstract
Morphofunctional reconstruction is a pivotal aspect in the surgery of head and neck neoplasms: nowadays, microvascular free flap surgery represents the gold standard. In choosing the surgical technique, the effects on residual quality of life, especially in elderly people, usually considered more fragile and so often excluded from microsurgical procedures, must be taken into account. This multicentre study evaluated the quality of life index in patients more than 75 years of age and who underwent to head and neck microsurgical reconstruction. Data from patients aged > 75 years at the time of major head and neck reconstruction conducted with free flaps between 1 January 2005 and 30 June 2015 were analysed retrospectively. We administered the Italian version of Quality of Life questionnaire SF-36, at least 24 months after surgery. Results were compared to those for the general Italian population of the same age. We enrolled 39 patients with an average age of 80.6 years. The results did not differ significantly from the reference population. The international literature has already shown that chronologic age is not a valid parameter to determine the surgical treatment modality. Even considering the quality of residual life, our study supports the indication for free-flap reconstruction of head and neck defects in the elderly, confirming its effectiveness in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Segmental mandibulectomy impairs health-related quality of life (QoL), by altering speech, mastication, swallowing, and facial aesthetics. Fibula free flap (FFF) used for mandible reconstruction is known to improve outcomes; however, minimal information exists in the literature regarding patient-reported outcomes. We aim to assess how current studies evaluate patient perception following segmental mandibulectomy and FFF mandible reconstruction. METHODS Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a search was conducted for publications involving FFF mandible reconstruction from 2005 to 2017 using PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PsychInfo. RESULTS Of 2212 articles identified initially, only 7 studies were deemed suitable. Six studies used the University of Washington Quality of Life questionnaire, 3 Oral Health Impact Profile, and 1 used European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Head and Neck (EORTC-H&N35). CONCLUSIONS There is a paucity of information in published reports on QoL outcomes following mandible reconstruction with FFF. In the era of patient-centered health care, observations warrant attention from researchers for physician-assessed patient-reported measures to factor in QoL expectation during surgical decision-making about the choice of reconstruction.

Abstract
Maxillary defects can be resolved by prosthetic obturation, autologous tissue reconstruction, or a combination of both. However, there is still controversy in the selection of the optimal approach. Therefore, the aim of this study was to systematically review evidences comparing the performance of obturators and flaps in patients after maxillary oncological ablation. Both electronic and manual searching approaches were conducted to identify eligible evidence. Two reviewers independently assessed the risk of bias. In addition, the same reviewers independently extracted the data. Meta-analyses were performed using Revman 5.3, and best evidence synthesis was performed. Sixteen studies were included and a total of 528 participants were analyzed. All studies were assessed at low quality. Results of this meta-analysis showed weak evidence in the difference between obturators and flaps on the outcome regarding word intelligibility (P = 0.004) and masticatory efficiency (P = 0.002). However, no differences were detected regarding speech intelligibility and nasalance. All studies were compiled into the best evidence synthesis. The sum of 31 evidences was considered. Twelve evidences were evaluated at a moderate level, such as speech, mastication, pain, salivation, taste sensations, and mouth opening. Except the outcomes of word intelligibility, masticatory efficiency, and mouth pain, other moderate evidences showed no difference between obturators and flaps. In conclusion, both obturators and flaps might be effective in patients' rehabilitation functions after maxillary ablation. However, some advantages were observed when using surgical reconstruction over prosthetic rehabilitation. Additional high-quality studies are needed to provide more solid evidence before applying these results into clinical practice.

Abstract
AIMS The aims of this study of people with oral cavity cancer were to compare the social support, depression, nicotine dependence, physical function and social-emotional function of those who continued smoking with those who quit smoking, by matching age and survival time and to identify the predictors of continued smoking during the survival period. BACKGROUND People who continue to smoke after cancer treatment may have an impact on treatment response and survival. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey was conducted. METHODS This study compared 92 people with oral cavity cancer who continued smoking with 92 people who quit smoking, with matching for age and survival time between January 2015 - November 2015. Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to compare the two groups. RESULTS The quit smoking group had significantly more social support, less depression and greater social-emotional function than the continued smoking group. People who were unmarried, received surgery without reconstruction, had poor social support and had poor social-emotional function were more likely to continue smoking. CONCLUSIONS People with oral cavity cancer were more likely to continue smoking after the treatment if they had low social support, depression, greater nicotine dependence and poor social-emotional function. Healthcare professionals should pay more attention to social support, psychological status and nicotine dependence of people who were treated for oral cavity cancer.
