Effect of Astragalus membranaceus in Rats on Peripheral Nerve Regeneration: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine Injection in Preventing Oxaliplatin-Induced Peripheral Neurotoxicity: An Analysis of Evidence from 3598 Patients

Background

Oxaliplatin is an effective chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of malignant tumors. However, severe oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neurotoxicity (OIPN) has been well documented. Traditional Chinese medicine injections (TCMIs) have shown significant efficacy in preventing OIPN. However, it is difficult for clinicians to determine the differences in the efficacy of various TCMIs in preventing OIPN. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of various TCMIs in preventing OIPN through a network meta-analysis (NMA) to further inform clinical decision-making.

Methods

The Chinese Journal Full Text Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, Chinese Science and Technology Journal Full Text Database, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of TCMIs for OIPN prevention. The retrieval time was from the establishment of the database to April 12, 2021. NMA was performed using Stata 14.0 software after 2 evaluators independently screened the literature, extracted information, and evaluated the risk of bias of the included studies.

Results

A total of 45 eligible RCTs involving 3598 cancer patients and 13 TCMIs were included. The 13 TCMIs included Xiaoaiping injection (XAPI), compound kushen injection (CKSI), Aidi injection (ADI), Brucea javanica oil emulsion injection (BJOEI), Shenmai injection (SMI), Kangai injection (KAI), Astragalus injection (AI), elemene emulsion injection (EEI), Shenfu injection (SFI), Shenqi Fuzheng injection (SIFZI), Kanglaite injection (KLEI), Huachansu injection (HCSI), and lentinan injection (LI). NMA results showed that AI was superior to AD and SIFZI was superior to ADI in reducing the incidence of grade I neurotoxicity. SIFZI was superior to EEI and ADI, and BJOEI was superior to chemotherapy alone in reducing the incidence of grade II neurotoxicity. SMI was superior to LI and CKSI in reducing the incidence of grade III neurotoxicity. SIFZI was superior to LI, BJOEI, XAPI, EEI, SMI, chemotherapy alone, HCSI, KLEI, and ADI in reducing the total incidence of grade I–IV neurotoxicity. SFI was superior to ADI. Based on the SUCRA values, AI was the most likely intervention to reduce the incidence of grade I neurotoxicity, SIFZI was the most likely intervention to reduce the total incidence of grade II and I–IV neurotoxicity, and SMI was the most likely intervention to reduce the incidence of grade III and IV neurotoxicity.

Conclusion

TCMIs can prevent OIPN to some extent, among which SIFZI, SMI, and AI may be the most promising TCMIs. However, given the limitations of current studies, more well-designed, high-quality clinical trials will be needed in the future to validate the benefits of TCMIs.

The PI3K/AKT Pathway-The Potential Key Mechanisms of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Stroke

Stroke is associated with a high disability and fatality rate, and adversely affects the quality of life of patients and their families. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used effectively in the treatment of stroke for more than 2000 years in China and surrounding countries and regions, and over the years, this field has gleaned extensive clinical treatment experience. The Phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) pathway is important for regulation of cell migration, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis, and plays a vital role in vascularization and oxidative stress in stroke. Current Western medicine treatment protocols for stroke include mainly pharmacologic or mechanical thrombectomy to restore blood flow. This review collates recent advances in the past 5 years in the TCM treatment of stroke involving the PI3K/AKT pathway. TCM treatment significantly reduces neuronal damage, inhibits cell apoptosis, and delays progression of stroke via various PI3K/AKT-mediated downstream pathways. In the future, TCM can provide new perspectives and directions for exploring the key factors, and effective activators or inhibitors that affect occurrence and progression of stroke, thereby facilitating treatment.

Oral Administration of East Asian Herbal Medicine for Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis with Association Rule Analysis to Identify Core Herb Combinations

This review aimed to comprehensively assess the efficacy and safety of oral East Asian herbal medicine (EAHM) for overall peripheral neuropathy (PN). In addition, an Apriori algorithm-based association rule analysis was performed to identify the core herb combination, thereby further generating useful hypotheses for subsequent drug discovery. A total of 10 databases were searched electronically from inception to July 2021. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing EAHM with conventional analgesic medication or usual care for managing PN were included. The RCT quality was appraised using RoB 2.0, and the random effects model was used to calculate the effect sizes of the included RCTs. The overall quality of evidence was evaluated according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation. By analyzing the constituent herb data, the potential association rules of core herb combinations were explored. A total of 67 RCTs involving 5753 patients were included in this systematic review. In a meta-analysis, EAHM monotherapy and combined EAHM and western medicine therapy demonstrated substantially improved sensory nerve conduction velocity, motor nerve conduction velocity, and response rate. Moreover, EAHM significantly improved the incidence rate, pain intensity, Toronto clinical scoring system, and Michigan diabetic neuropathy score. The evidence grade was moderate to low due to the substantial heterogeneity among the studies. Nine association rules were identified by performing the association rule analysis on the extraction data of 156 EAHM herbs. Therefore, the constituents of the herb combinations with consistent association rules were Astragali Radix, Cinnamomi Ramulus, and Spatholobi Calulis. This meta-analysis supports the hypothesis that EAHM monotherapy and combined therapy may be beneficial for PN patients, and follow-up research should be conducted to confirm the precise action target of the core herb.

Revisiting the Role of Biologically Active Natural and Synthetic Compounds as an Intervention to Treat Injured Nerves

Traumatic lesions in nerves present high incidence and may culminate in sensorimotor and/or autonomic dysfunctions or a total loss of function, affecting the patient's quality of life. Although the microenvironment favors peripheral nerve regeneration, the regenerative process is not always successful. Some herbs, natural products, and synthetic drugs have been studied as potential pro-regenerative interventions. We reviewed and discussed the most recent articles published over the last ten years in high impact factor journals. Even though most of the articles contemplated in this review were in vitro and animal model studies, those with herbs showed promising results. Most of them presented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Drugs of several pharmacological classes also showed optimistic outcomes in nerve functional recovery, including clinical trials. The results are hopeful; however, mechanisms of action need to be elucidated, and there is a need for more high-quality clinical studies. The study presents careful compilation of findings of dozens of compounds with consistent pro-regenerative evidence published in respected scientific journals. It may be valuable for health professionals and researchers in the field.

Effect of herbal extracts on peripheral nerve regeneration after microsurgery of the sciatic nerve in rats

Background

Recent experimental studies using herbal extracts have shown the possibility of peripheral nerve regeneration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of herbal extracts on peripheral nerve regeneration in a rat sciatic nerve injury model.

Methods

A total of 53 rats were randomly assigned to a control group or one of four experimental groups. In all rats, the sciatic nerve was completely severed and microscopic epineural end-to-end neurorrhaphy was performed. Normal saline (2 mL) was topically applied to the site of nerve repair in the control group, whereas four different herbal extracts – 2 mL each of Astragalus mongholicus Bunge, Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino, Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux, or Paeonia lactiflora Pall. – were topically applied to the site of nerve repair in each experimental group. Nerve conduction studies were performed at an average of 11.9 weeks after the operation, and conduction velocity and proximal and distal amplitudes were measured. Biopsies were performed at an average of 13.2 weeks after the initial neurorrhaphy. The quality of nerve anastomosis and perineural adhesion to the surrounding soft tissues was macroscopically evaluated. The neuroma size at the site of the neurorrhaphy was microscopically measured, whereas the size of the scar tissue was evaluated relative to the diameter of the repaired nerve.

Results

The nerve conduction study results showed the highest nerve conduction velocity in the experimental group that used the Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino extract and the highest proximal and distal amplitudes in the experimental group that used the Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux extract. Macroscopic evaluations after the second operation showed that grade 2 perineural adhesion was found in 70.8% of rats. The mean neuroma size in the Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino, Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux, and Paeonia lactiflora Pall. groups showed statistically significant decreases relative to the control group. The mean scar tissue formation index in the Paeonia lactiflora Pall. group showed a statistically significant decrease relative to the control group.

Conclusions

The peripheral nerve regeneration effect of the herbal extracts was confirmed through decreased neuroma and scar tissue formation.

Neurotransmitter, Antioxidant and Anti-neuroinflammatory Mechanistic Potentials of Herbal Medicines in Ameliorating Autism Spectrum Disorder

BACKGROUND

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental issue that disrupts behavior, nonverbal communication, and social interaction, impacting all aspects of an individual's social development. The underlying origin of autism is unclear, however, oxidative stress, as well as serotonergic, adrenergic and dopaminergic systems are thought to be implicated in ASD. Despite the fact that there is no effective medication for autism, current pharmacological treatments are utilized to ameliorate some of the symptoms such as selfmutilation, aggression, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors, inattention, hyperactivity, and sleep disorders.

METHODS

In accord with the literature regarding the activity of herbal medicines on neurotransmitter function, we aimed to review the most worthy medicinal herbs possessing neuroprotective effects.

RESULTS

Based on the outcome, medicinal herbs such as Zingiber officinale, Astragalus membranaceu, Ginkgo biloba, Centella asiatica and Acorus calamus, have antioxidant activity, which can influence neurotransmitter systems and are potentially neuroprotective.

CONCLUSION

Consequently, these herbs, in theory at least, appear to be suitable candidates within an overall management strategy for those on the autism spectrum.

A Systematic Review of Phytochemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics on Astragali Radix: Implications for Astragali Radix as a Personalized Medicine

Astragali radix (AR) is one of the most widely used traditional Chinese herbal medicines. Modern pharmacological studies and clinical practices indicate that AR possesses various biological functions, including potent immunomodulation, antioxidant, anti-inflammation and antitumor activities. To date, more than 200 chemical constituents have been isolated and identified from AR. Among them, isoflavonoids, saponins and polysaccharides are the three main types of beneficial compounds responsible for its pharmacological activities and therapeutic efficacy. After ingestion of AR, the metabolism and biotransformation of the bioactive compounds were extensive in vivo. The isoflavonoids and saponins and their metabolites are the major type of constituents absorbed in plasma. The bioavailability barrier (BB), which is mainly composed of efflux transporters and conjugating enzymes, is expected to have a significant impact on the bioavailability of AR. This review summarizes studies on the phytochemistry, pharmacology and pharmacokinetics on AR. Additionally, the use of AR as a personalized medicine based on the BB is also discussed, which may provide beneficial information to achieve a better and more accurate therapeutic response of AR in clinical practice.

Multi-Component Herbal Products in the Prevention and Treatment of Chemotherapy-Associated Toxicity and Side Effects: A Review on Experimental and Clinical Evidences

Chemotherapy is nowadays the main treatment of human cancers. Chemotherapeutic agents target rapidly dividing cancer cells to suppress tumor progression, however, their non-specific cytotoxicity often leads to significant side effects that might be intolerable to cancer patients. Multi-component herbal products have been used for thousands of years for the treatment of multiple human diseases. This study aims to systematically summarize and evaluate the experimental and clinical evidences of the efficacy of multi-component herbal products in improving chemotherapy-induced side effect. Literature was retrieved from PubMed database and evaluated based on the side effects described. Multi-component herbal products were found to be effective in ameliorating the neurotoxicity, gastrointestinal toxicity, hematological toxicity, cardiotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Both experimental and clinical evidences were found, indicating the potential of applying multicomponent herbal products in the clinical treatment of chemotherapy-induced side effects. However, the lack of mechanistic and pharmacokinetic studies, inconsistency in product quality, as well as insufficient clinical evidence suggested that more investigations are urgently necessary. In all, our review shed light on the potential of using multi-component herbal products in the clinical management of chemotherapy-induced toxicity and side effects. We also discussed the potential threats of natural products for cancer treatment and compared the advantages of using herbs to conventional chemical drugs.

Astragalus Polysaccharide Protects Neurons and Stabilizes Mitochondrial in a Mouse Model of Parkinson Disease

BACKGROUND Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) have a very good therapeutic effect in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and nerve injury disease. However, research on Parkinson disease (PD) treatment with APS is lacking. MATERIAL AND METHODS The present study was designed to explore the effects of APS on the protection of neurons and mitochondrial in a mouse model of PD using behavioral experiments, and observations of mitochondrial structure and transmembrane potential. RESULTS It was shown that APS could attenuate 1-methyl-4-pheyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced motor dysfunction (P<0.01), increase the proportion of TH-positive cells (P<0.01), reverse MPTP-induced mitochondrial structural damage, and reduce MPTP-induced high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increase MPTP-induced decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential. In addition, APS also decreased the bax/bcl2 ratio, and cytochrome-c and caspase-3 protein content (P<0.01) in substantia nigra in our mouse PD model. CONCLUSIONS APS provided a protective effect on neurons and mitochondrial in a mouse PD model.

Increased Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide and Macrophages Are Involved in Astragalus membranaceus-Mediated Peripheral Nerve Regeneration in Rats

Astragalus membranaceus (AM) is one of 50 fundamental herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. Previous studies have shown that AM extract can be a potential nerve growth-promoting factor, being beneficial for the growth of peripheral nerve axons. We further investigated the effects of AM extract on regeneration in a rat sciatic nerve transection model. Rats were divided into three groups ([Formula: see text]): normal saline (intraperitoneal) as the control, and 1.5[Formula: see text]g/kg or 3.0[Formula: see text]g/kg of AM extract (every other day for four weeks), respectively. We evaluated neuronal electrophysiology, neuronal connectivity, macrophage infiltration, expression levels and location of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and expression levels of both nerve growth factors (NGFs) and immunoregulatory factors. In the high-dose AM group, neuronal electrophysiological function (measured by nerve conductive velocity and its latency) was significantly improved ([Formula: see text]). Expression levels of CGRP and macrophage density were also drastically enhanced ([Formula: see text]). Expression levels of fibroblast growth factor (FGF), NGF, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-[Formula: see text], interleukin-1 (IL-1), and interferon (IFN)-[Formula: see text] were reduced in the high-dose AM group ([Formula: see text]), while FGF, NGF, PDGF, IL-1, and IFN-[Formula: see text] were increased in the low-dose AM group ([Formula: see text]). These results suggest that AM can modulate local inflammatory conditions, enhance nerve regeneration, and potentially increase recovery of a severe peripheral nerve injury.

Radix Astragali-Based Chinese Herbal Medicine for Oxaliplatin-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background. Treatment of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) remains a big challenge for oncologists. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of Radix Astragali- (RA-) based Chinese herbal medicine in the prevention and treatment of oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy, including the incidence and grading of neurotoxicity, effective percentage, and nerve conduction velocity. Methods. All randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were found using PubMed, Cochrane, Springer, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang Database of China Science Periodical Database (CSPD) by keyword search. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.0. Results. A total of 1552 participants were included in 24 trials. Meta-analysis showed the incidence of all-grade neurotoxicity was significantly lower in experimental groups and high-grade neurotoxicity was also significantly less. Effective percentage was significantly higher and sensory nerve conduction velocity was improved significantly, but changes in motor nerve conduction velocity were not statistically significant. No adverse events associated with RA-based intervention were reported. Conclusion. RA-based intervention may be beneficial in relieving oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy. However, more double-blind, multicenter, large-scale RCTs are needed to support this theory. Trial Registration. Can medical herbs stimulate regeneration or neuroprotection and treat neuropathic pain in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy?

Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy (CIPN) has a relevant impact on the quality of life of cancer patients. There are no curative conventional treatments, so further options have to be investigated. We conducted a systematic review in English and Chinese language databases to illuminate the role of medical herbs. 26 relevant studies on 5 single herbs, one extract, one receptor-agonist, and 8 combinations of herbs were identified focusing on the single herbs Acorus calamus rhizoma, Cannabis sativa fructus, Chamomilla matricaria, Ginkgo biloba, Salvia officinalis, Sweet bee venom, Fritillaria cirrhosae bulbus, and the herbal combinations Bu Yang Huan Wu, modified Bu Yang Huan Wu plus Liuwei Di Huang, modified Chai Hu Long Gu Mu Li Wan, Geranii herba plus Aconiti lateralis praeparata radix , Niu Che Sen Qi Wan (Goshajinkigan), Gui Zhi Jia Shu Fu Tang (Keishikajutsubuto), Huang Qi Wu Wu Tang (Ogikeishigomotsuto), and Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang (Shakuyakukanzoto). The knowledge of mechanism of action is still limited, the quality of clinical trials needs further improvement, and studies have not yielded enough evidence to establish a standard practice, but a lot of promising substances have been identified. While CIPN has multiple mechanisms of neuronal degeneration, a combination of herbs or substances might deal with multiple targets for the aim of neuroprotection or neuroregeneration in CIPN.

Effect of Arecoline on Regeneration of Injured Peripheral Nerves

The present study provides in vitro and in vivo evaluation of arecoline on peripheral nerve regeneration. In the in vitro study, we found that arecoline at 50 μg/ml could significantly promote the survival and outgrowth of cultured Schwann cells as compared to the controls treated with culture medium only. In the in vivo study, we evaluated peripheral nerve regeneration across a 10-mm gap in the sciatic nerve of the rat, using a silicone rubber nerve chamber filled with the arecoline solution. In the control group, the chambers were filled with normal saline only. At the end of the fourth week, morphometric data revealed that the arecoline-treated group at 5 μg/ml significantly increased the number and the density of myelinated axons as compared to the controls. Immunohistochemical staining in the arecoline-treated animals at 5 μg/ml also showed their neural cells in the L4 and L5 dorsal root ganglia ipsilateral to the injury were strongly retrograde-labeled with fluorogold and lamina I–II regions in the dorsal horn ipsilateral to the injury were significantly calcitonin gene-related peptide-immunolabeled compared with the controls. In addition, we found that the number of macrophages recruited in the distal sciatic nerve was increased as the concentration of arecoline was increased. Electrophysiological measurements showed the arecoline-treated groups at 5 and 50 μg/ml had a relatively larger nerve conductive velocity of the evoked muscle action potentials compared to the controls. These results indicate that arecoline could stimulate local inflammatory conditions, improving the recovery of a severe peripheral nerve injury.

The protective effects of Achyranthes bidentata polypeptides on rat sciatic nerve crush injury causes modulation of neurotrophic factors

Pharmacological treatment is a therapeutic approach to improving nerve regeneration and functional recovery after peripheral nerve crush injury. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of the polypeptides isolated from Achyranthes bidentata Blume (abbreviated as ABPP) on rat sciatic crush injury and to test the possible involvement of neurotrophic factors. After surgical crush injury, rats received daily intraperitoneal injection of 0.2 ml saline containing 2 mg ABPP, 1 μg nerve growth factor (NGF) or no additive. The results from walking track analysis, electrophysiological assessment and histological evaluation indicated that the repair outcomes by ABPP treatment were close to those by NGF treatment, but better than those by treatment with saline alone. The quantitative real-time RT-PCR was used to monitor the mRNA expression of growth associated protein in the crush nerves and the mRNA expression of NGF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), tyrosine kinase (Trk)A and TrkB in the dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) at L4-L6. The mRNA expression of these genes in the crush nerve sample and DRGs sample was higher after treatment with ABPP or NGF than after treatment with saline alone. Our findings suggest that ABPP might protect peripheral nerve against crush injury through stimulating release of neurotrophic factors and the other cytokines.

Growth-Promoting Effects of Quercetin on Peripheral Nerves in Rats

Objectives

The present study evaluated in vitro and in vivo the effects of quercetin (QC), a major ingredient in various flavonoids, on peripheral nerve regeneration.

Methods

In the in vitro study, we found that QC at concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 10 μg/mL could significantly promote the survival and outgrowth of cultured Schwann cells as compared with the controls treated with culture medium only. In the in vivo study, we evaluated peripheral nerve regeneration across a 15-mm gap in the sciatic nerve of the rat, using a silicone rubber nerve chamber filled with the QC solution. In the control group, the chambers were filled with normal saline only.

Results

At the end of 8 weeks, morphometric data revealed that all 3 QC groups significantly increased the count and density of myelinated axons as compared with the controls. Electro-physiological measurements showed that the QC-treated group at 1 μg/mL had a significantly larger area of evoked muscle action potential (MAP) compared with the controls. In addition, the amplitude of the MAP in the QC-treated groups at 0.1 and 1 μg/mL was significantly larger than that in the controls.

Conclusions

All of these results indicate that QC treatment has nerve growth–promoting effects which may lead to a promising herbal medicine for the recovery of regenerating peripheral nerves.

Protective effect of GCSB-5, an herbal preparation, against peripheral nerve injury in rats

AIM OF THE STUDY

GCSB-5 (traditional name: Chungpa-Juhn), an herbal medicine composed of 6 crude herbs (Saposhnikovia divaricata Schiskin, Achyranthis bidentata Blume, Acanthopanax sessiliflorum Seem, Cibotium baromets J. Smith, Glycine max Meriill, and Eucommia ulmoides Oliver), has been widely used in Asia for treatment of neuropathic and inflammatory diseases. This study investigated the protective effect of GCSB-5 against peripheral nerve injury in vitro and in vivo.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

After left sciatic nerve transection, rats received oral administration of GCSB-5 (30, 100, 300, and 600 mg/kg), or saline (vehicle), respectively, once daily for 8 weeks. Motor functional recovery and axonal nerve regeneration were evaluated by measurement of sciatic functional index (SFI), sensory regeneration distance, and gastrocnemius muscle mass ratio. The myelinated axon number was counted by morphometric analysis. In the in vitro study, the effects of GCSB-5 on H(2)O(2)-induced oxidative damage in SH-SY5Y cells were investigated by measurement of cell viability, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, release of lactate dehydrogenease (LDH), and cellular glutathione contents. Neurite outgrowth was also determined.

RESULTS

After 8 weeks of nerve transection, SFI, regeneration distance, and gastrocnemius muscle mass ratio and myelinated axon number showed a significant decrease and these decreases were attenuated by GCSB-5. GCSB-5 significantly inhibited H(2)O(2)-induced cell death and oxidative stress, as evidenced by decreases in production of ROS and lipid peroxidation and release of LDH, and by increase in total GSH content.

CONCLUSIONS

The neuroprotective effect afforded by GCSB-5 is due in part to reduced oxidative stress.

Earthworm extracts facilitate PC12 cell differentiation and promote axonal sprouting in peripheral nerve injury

The present study provides in vitro and in vivo evaluations of earthworm (Pheretima aspergilum) on peripheral nerve regeneration. In the in vitro study, we found the earthworm (EW) water extracts caused a marked enhancement of the nerve growth factor-mediated neurite outgrowth from PC12 cells as well as the expressions of growth associated protein 43 and synapsin I. In the in vivo study, silicone rubber chambers filled with EW extracts were used to bridge a 10 mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Eight weeks after implantation, the group receiving EW extracts had a much higher success percentage of regeneration (90%) compared to the control (60%) receiving the saline. In addition, quantitative histology of the successfully regenerated nerves revealed that myelinated axons in EW group at 31.25 microg/ml was significantly more than those in the controls (p < 0.05). These results showed that EW extracts can be a potential growth-promoting factor on regenerating peripheral nerves.
