Beyond boundaries: investigating shared and divergent connectivity in the pre-/postcentral gyri and supplementary motor area

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the functional connectivity of key brain regions involved in motor and sensory functions, namely the precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus and supplementary motor area (SMA). Using advanced MRI, the objective was to understand the neurophysiological integrative characterizations of these regions by examining their connectivity with eight distinct functional brain networks. The goal was to uncover their roles beyond conventional motor and sensory functions, contributing to a more holistic understanding of brain functioning.

METHODS

The study involved 198 healthy volunteers, with the primary methodology being functional connectivity analysis using advanced MRI techniques. The bilateral precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus and SMA served as seed regions, and their connectivity with eight distinct brain regional functional networks was investigated. This approach allowed for the exploration of synchronized activity between these critical brain areas, shedding light on their integrated functioning and relationships with other brain networks.

RESULTS

The study revealed a nuanced landscape of functional connectivity for the precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus and SMA with the main functional brain networks. Despite their high functional connectedness, these regions displayed diverse functional integrations with other networks, particularly in the salience, visual, cerebellar and language networks. Specific data and statistical significance were not provided in the abstract, but the results suggested unique and distinct roles for each brain area in sophisticated cognitive tasks beyond their conventional motor and sensory functions.

CONCLUSION

The study emphasized the multifaceted roles of the precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus and SMA. Beyond their crucial involvement in motor and sensory functions, these regions exhibited varied functional integrations with different brain networks. The observed disparities, especially in the salience, visual, cerebellar and language networks, indicated a nuanced and specialized involvement of these regions in diverse cognitive functions. The study underscores the importance of considering the broader neurophysiological landscape to comprehend the intricate roles of these brain areas, contributing to ongoing efforts in unraveling the complexities of brain function.

Altered dynamic and static brain activity and functional connectivity in COVID-19 patients: a preliminary study

This study aimed to investigate the effects of COVID-19 on brain functional activity through resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). fMRI scans were conducted on a cohort of 42 confirmed COVID-19-positive patients and 46 healthy controls (HCs) to assess brain functional activity. A combination of dynamic and static amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (dALFF/sALFF) and dynamic and static functional connectivity (dFC/sFC) was used for evaluation. Abnormal brain regions identified were then used as feature inputs in the model to evaluate support vector machine (SVM) capability in recognizing COVID-19 patients. Moreover, the random forest (RF) model was employed to verify the stability of SVM diagnoses for COVID-19 patients. Compared to HCs, COVID-19 patients exhibited a decrease in sALFF in the right lingual gyrus and the left medial occipital gyrus and an increase in dALFF in the right straight gyrus. Moreover, there was a decline in sFC between both lingual gyri and the right superior occipital gyrus and a reduction in dFC with the precentral gyrus. The dynamic and static combined ALFF and FC could distinguish between COVID-19 patients and the HCs with an accuracy of 0.885, a specificity of 0.818, a sensitivity of 0.933 and an area under the curve of 0.909. The combination of dynamic and static ALFF and FC can provide information for detecting brain functional abnormalities in COVID-19 patients.

Altered cognitive control network mediates the association between long-term pain and anxiety symptoms in primary dysmenorrhea

Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated the association of the cognitive control network (CCN) with the maintenance of chronic pain. However, whether and how dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a key region within the CCN, is altered in menstrual pain is unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate alterations in the DLPFC functional connectivity network in patients with primary dysmenorrhea (PDM). The study comprised 41 PDM patients and 39 matched healthy controls (HCs), all of whom underwent a resting-state functional MRI scan during the menstrual stage. All participants were instructed to complete the clinical assessment before the MRI scan. We used the DLPFC as the seed in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) analysis to investigate the difference between PDM patients and HCs. Compared to HCs, PDM patients showed increased right DLPFC rsFC at the bilateral lingual gyrus, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), and middle cingulate cortex, and decreased left DLPFC rsFC at the right orbital frontal cortex. In addition, increased right DLPFC-bilateral dACC connectivity mediated the association between disease duration and the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) scores in PDM patients. We confirmed that the DLPFC-dACC rsFC was associated with higher SAS scores, which could mediate the association between disease duration and anxiety symptoms in patients with PDM. Our findings provide central pathological evidence for an abnormal rsFC of the CCN in PDM patients, which may contribute to a better understanding of the neuropathophysiological mechanisms underlying PDM.

Disrupted functional connectivity of the striatum in patients with diffuse axonal injury: a resting-state functional MRI study

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) disrupts the integrity of white matter microstructure and affects brain functional connectivity, resulting in persistent cognitive, behavioral and affective deficits. Mounting evidence suggests that altered cortical-subcortical connectivity is a major contributor to cognitive dysfunction. The functional integrity of the striatum is particularly vulnerable to DAI, but has received less attention. This study aimed to investigate the alteration patterns of striatal subdivision functional connectivity. Twenty-six patients with DAI and 27 healthy controls underwent resting-state fMRI scans on a 3.0 T scanner. We assessed striatal subdivision functional connectivity using a seed-based analysis in DAI. Furthermore, a partial correlation was used to measure its clinical association. Compared to controls, patients with DAI showed decreased functional connectivity between the right inferior ventral striatum and right inferior frontal gyrus, as well as the right inferior parietal lobule, between the left inferior ventral striatum and right inferior frontal gyrus, between the right superior ventral striatum and bilateral cerebellar posterior lobe, between the bilateral dorsal caudal putamen and right anterior cingulate gyrus, and between the right dorsal caudal putamen and right inferior parietal lobule. Moreover, decreased functional connectivity was observed between the left dorsal caudate and the right cerebellar posterior lobe, while increased functional connectivity was found between the left dorsal caudate and right inferior parietal lobule. Correlation analyses showed that regions with functional connectivity differences in the DAI group correlated with multiple clinical scoring scales, including cognition, motor function, agitated behavior, and anxiety disorders. These findings suggest that abnormalities in cortico-striatal and cerebellar-striatal functional connectivity are observed in patients with DAI, enriching our understanding of the neuropathological mechanisms of post-injury cognitive disorders and providing potential neuroimaging markers for the diagnosis and treatment of DAI.

Abnormal degree centrality can be a potential imaging biomarker in first-episode, drug-naive bipolar mania

Brain network abnormalities in emotional response exist in bipolar mania. However, few studies have been published on network degree centrality of first-episode, drug-naive bipolar mania, and healthy controls. This study aimed to assess the utility of neural activity values analyzed via degree centrality methods. Sixty-six first-episode, drug-naive patients with bipolar mania and 60 healthy controls participated in resting-state functional magnetic resonance rescanning and scale estimating. The degree centrality and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve methods were used for an analysis of the imaging data. Relative to healthy controls, first-episode bipolar mania patients displayed increased degree centrality values in the left middle occipital gyrus, precentral gyrus, supplementary motor area, Precuneus, and decreased degree centrality values in the left parahippocampal gyrus, right insula and superior frontal gyrus, medial. ROC results exhibited degree centrality values in the left parahippocampal gyrus that could distinguish first-episode bipolar mania patients from healthy controls with 0.8404 for AUC. Support vector machine results showed that reductions in degree centrality values in the left parahippocampal gyrus can be used to effectively differentiate between bipolar disorder patients and healthy controls with respective accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity values of 83.33%, 85.51%, and 88.41%. Increased activity in the left parahippocampal gyrus may be a distinctive neurobiological feature of first-episode, drug-naive bipolar mania. Degree centrality values in the left parahippocampal gyrus might be served as a potential neuroimaging biomarker to discriminate first-episode, drug-naive bipolar mania patients from healthy controls.

Disrupted voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity in congenital nystagmus using resting-state fMRI

OBJECTIVES

Idiopathic congenital nystagmus (CN) is a rare eye disease that can cause early blindness (EB). CN deficits are observed most frequently with oculomotor dysfunction; however, it is still unclear what neuromechanics underly CN with EB. Based on that visual experience requires the functional integration of both hemispheres, we hypothesized that CN adolescents with EB might exhibit impaired interhemispheric synchrony. Our study aimed to investigate the interhemispheric functional connectivity alterations using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) and their relationships with clinical features in CN patients.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study included 21 patients with CN and EB, and 21 sighted controls (SC), who were matched for sex, age and educational level. The 3.0 T MRI scan and ocular examination were performed. The VMHC differences were examined between the two groups, and the relationships between mean VMHC values in altered brain regions and clinical variables in the CN group were evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis.

RESULTS

Compared with the SC group, the CN had increased VMHC values in the bilateral cerebellum posterior and anterior lobes/cerebellar tonsil/declive/pyramis/culmen/pons, middle frontal gyri (BA 10) and frontal eye field/superior frontal gyri (BA 6 and BA 8). No particular areas of the brain had lower VMHC values. Furthermore, no correlation with the duration of disease or blindness could be demonstrated in CN.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest the existence of interhemispheric connectivity changes and provide further evidence for the neurological basis of CN with EB.

Functional connectivity of sub-cortical brain regions: disparities and similarities

Sub-cortical grey matter structures, such as the putamen, pallidum, caudate, thalamus, amygdala and hippocampus, play substantial roles in both simple and complex brain functions, including regulation of pleasure and emotions; control of movements; learning; decision-making; language development; and sensory, cognitive, social and other higher-order functions. Most of these regions act as information hubs for the nervous system, relaying and controlling the flow of information to various portions of the brain. To further understand the complex neurophysiological characteristics of sub-cortical areas, the aim of this study was to investigate the functional integrations of six sub-cortical areas to different major functional brain networks. One hundred ninety-eight healthy individuals were examined using resting-state functional MRI. The seeds identified in this study were six sub-cortical deep grey matter regions, namely putamen, pallidum, caudate, thalamus, amygdala and hippocampus. The analysis indicated that the link between the sub-cortical regions and some functional brain networks was similar in some aspects, but there were disparities in the mechanism underlying such a link and in the existence of functional connections between these regions and networks. Despite the substantial functional connectivity linkages between the sub-cortical regions, discrepancies were still noted. On the basis of the connections to the majority of the major brain networks, this study demonstrated the essential functional roles and involvements of the sub-cortical regions. This finding is consistent with an earlier report that revealed a substantial role of the sub-cortical regions in several brain functions.

Higher betweenness and degree centrality in the frontal and cerebellum cortex of Meige's syndrome patients than hemifacial spasm patients

Meige's syndrome and hemifacial spasm (HFS) are two different forms of dystonic movement disorder, but their difference in terms of resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) remains unclear. The present study applied resting state fMRI on the patients and quantified their functional connectivity with graph theoretical measures, including the degree centrality and the betweenness centrality. Fifteen Meige's syndrome patients and 19 HFS patients matched in age and gender were recruited and their MRI data were collected. To analyze the rsFC, we adopted the Anatomical Automatic Labeling (AAL) template, a brain atlas system including 90 regions of interest (ROIs) covering all the brain regions of cerebral cortex. For each participant, the time-course of each ROI was extracted, and the corresponding degree centrality and betweenness centrality of each ROI were computed. These measures were then compared between the Meige's syndrome patients and the HFS patients. Meige's syndrome patients showed higher betweenness centrality and degree centrality of bilateral superior medial frontal cortex, the left cerebellum cortex, etc. than the HFS patients. Our results suggest that the rsFC pattern in Meige's syndrome patients might become more centralized toward the prefrontal and vestibular cerebellar systems, indicating less flexibility in their functional connections. These results preliminarily revealed the characteristic abnormality in the functional connection of Meige's patients and may help to explore better treatment.

The establishment of the general microexpression recognition ability and its relevant brain activity

Microexpressions are very transitory expressions lasting about 1/25∼1/2 s, which can reveal people's true emotions they try to hide or suppress. The PREMERT (pseudorandom ecological microexpression recognition test) could test the individual's microexpression recognition ability with six microexpression Ms (the mean of accuracy rates of a microexpression type under six expression backgrounds), and six microexpression SDs (the standard deviation of accuracy rates of this microexpression type under six expression backgrounds), but it and other studies did not explore the general microexpression recognition ability (the GMERA) or could not test the GMERA effectively. Therefore, the current study put forward and established the GMERA with the behavioral data of the PREMERT. The spontaneous brain activity in the resting state is a stable index to measure individual cognitive characteristics. Therefore, the current study explored the relevant resting-state brain activity of the GMERA indicators to prove that GMERA is an individual cognitive characteristic from brain mechanisms with the neuroimaging data of the PREMERT. The results showed that (1) there was a three-layer hierarchical structure in human microexpression recognition ability: The GMERA (the highest layer); recognition of a type of microexpression under different expression backgrounds (the second layer); and recognition of a certain microexpression under a certain expression background (the third layer). A common factor GMERA was extracted from the six microexpression types recognition in PREMERT. Four indicators of the GMERA were calculated from six microexpression Ms and six microexpression SDs, such as GMERAL (level of GMERA), GMERAF (fluctuation of GMERA), GMERAB (background effect of GMERA), and GMERABF (fluctuation of GMERAB), which had good parallel-forms reliability, calibration validity, and ecological validity. The GMERA provided a concise and comprehensive overview of the individual's microexpression recognition ability. The PREMERT was proved as a good test to measure the GMERA. (2) ALFFs (the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations) in both eyes-closed and eyes-opened resting-states and ALFFs-difference could predict the four indicators of the GMERA. The relevant resting-state brain areas were some areas of the expression recognition network, the microexpression consciousness and attention network, and the motor network for the change from expression backgrounds to microexpression. (3) The relevant brain areas of the GMERA and different types of microexpression recognition belonged to the three cognitive processes, but the relevant brain areas of the GMERA were the "higher-order" areas to be more concise and critical than those of different types of microexpression recognition.

Altered Intrinsic Brain Activity in Patients With Late-Life Depression: A Resting-State Functional MRI Study

Objectives

To investigate the altered intrinsic brain activity (IBA) in patients suffering from late-life depression (LLD) using a percent amplitude of fluctuation (PerAF) method.

Methods

In total, fifty patients with LLD and 40 non-depressed controls (NCs) were recruited for the present research. Participants underwent the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) test and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) scans. The RBANS test consists of 12 sub-tests that contribute to a total score and index scores across the following five domains: immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, language, attention, and delayed memory. The PerAF method was used for data analysis to detect changes in neural activity in the relevant brain regions. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was conducted to evaluate the ability of the RBANS test and proposed the PerAF method in distinguishing the two groups. The relationships between altered IBA and neuropsychologic deficits were determined by the Pearson correlation analysis.

Results

A significant difference existed in RBANS total score, immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, language, attention, and delayed memory between groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the NCs group, the LLD group demonstrated decreased PerAF differences in the bilateral superior frontal gyrus, orbital part (Frontal_Sup_Orb), and bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). The PerAF method and RBANS test exhibited an excellent discriminatory power with the area under curve (AUC) values in distinguishing the two groups. In addition, the attention score of the RBANS test positively correlated with the PerAF values of the bilateral Frontal_Sup_Orb and bilateral ACC.

Conclusion

The changes of PerAF in the bilateral Frontal_Sup_Orb and bilateral ACC are related to an increased risk of developing LLD. Moreover, the PerAF method could be used as an underlying sensitivity biomarker to identify the psychiatric disorder.

A longitudinal resting-state functional connectivity analysis on trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress symptoms in older individuals

BACKGROUND

Given the present demographic shift towards an aging society, there is an increased need to investigate the brain's functional connectivity in the context of aging. Trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are factors known to impact healthy aging and have been reported to be associated with functional connectivity differences. In the present study, we examined and compared differences in within-default mode network (DMN), within-salience network (SN) and between-DMN-SN functional connectivity, between trauma-exposed individuals with and without PTSD symptoms as well as non-traumatized individuals in a non-clininical older adult sample.

METHODS

Resting state functional MRI and behavioral data is taken from the Longitudinal Healthy Aging Brain Database Project (LHAB). For the present analysis, participants who completed the questionnaires on trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms (N = 110 individuals of which n = 50 individuals reported previous trauma exposure and n = 25 individuals reported PTSD symptoms; mean age = 70.55 years, SD = 4.82) were included.

RESULTS

The reporting of PTSD symptoms relative to no symptoms was associated with lower within-DMN connectivity, while on a trend level trauma-exposed individuals showed higher within-SN connectivity compared to non-trauma exposed individuals. Consistent with existing models of healthy aging, between-DMN-SN functional connectivity showed an increase across time in older age.

CONCLUSION

Present results suggest that alterations in within-DMN and within-SN functional connectivity also occur in non-treatment seeking older adult populations with trauma exposure and in association with PTSD symptoms. These changes manifest, alongside altered between-DMN-SN functional connectivity, in older age supposedly independent of aging-related functional desegregation.

Altered intrinsic brain activity in mild Alzheimer's disease patients with sleep disturbances

Sleep disturbances are one of the preventive factors to delay the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease. Early identification of Alzheimer's disease patients prone to develop sleep disturbances to offer early medical intervention is important. Resting-state functional MRI is a widely used method to investigate the neural mechanisms and find neuroimaging biomarkers in neuropsychiatric diseases. In this study, we applied percent amplitude of fluctuation (PerAF) and mPerAF (divided by global mean PerAF) to test the strength of intrinsic brain activity in 38 mild Alzheimer's disease patients with sleep disturbances (ADSD) and 21 mild Alzheimer's disease patients without sleep disturbances (ADNSD). Compared with ADNSD, we found decreased intrinsic brain activity in the calcarine gyrus, the lingual gyrus, the fusiform gyrus extending to the parahippocampal gyrus, the precentral gyrus, the postcentral gyrus (all in the left hemisphere) and the left brainstem. Conclusively, ADSD exhibited reduced neural activity in specific brain regions related to the sensorimotor network and the visual network, which indicated the contribution of sleep disturbances to the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Especially, the ventral visual pathway to the hippocampus might serve for the memory impaired by sleep disturbances in Alzheimer's disease, and the brainstem might be critical in the initiation of sleep disturbances in Alzheimer's disease. These findings further elucidate the interactions between Alzheimer's disease and sleep disturbances and could help with the early recognition of Alzheimer's disease patients who tend to develop sleep disturbances.

Resting-state functional connectivity in patients with a complex PTSD or complex dissociative disorder before and after inpatient trauma treatment

INTRODUCTION

Recent research suggests that traumatized patients are characterized by disrupted resting-state functional connectivity. We examined whether neural networks involved in resting-state change over the course of a phase-oriented inpatient treatment for complex traumatized and dissociative disorder patients. We also investigated associations between these network alterations and clinical symptoms and emotion regulation skills.

METHODS

Pre- and post-treatment, electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded during resting-state in patients (n = 23) with a complex dissociative disorder (CDD) or complex posttraumatic stress disorder (cPTSD). Patients also completed clinical and emotion regulation questionnaires. To reduce variance in the collected data, patients were exclusively tested as one prototypical dissociative part referred to as Apparently Normal Part (ANP). Functional network connectivity was examined and compared with a matched healthy control group (n = 37), also measured twice.

RESULTS

Prior to treatment and compared with controls, patients had a significantly lower functional connectivity strength within eyes-open and eyes-closed resting-state networks in the theta and alpha frequency band. Following treatment, functional connectivity strength within these networks was comparable to the control group and comprised areas belonging to the default mode network (DMN) and prefrontal as well as anterior cingulate control regions. Treatment-related network normalizations in the theta frequency band were associated with a self-reported increase in the use of cognitive reappraisal strategies and reduction in emotion regulation difficulties.

CONCLUSION

Phase-oriented trauma treatment can strengthen resting-state network connectivity and can increase the capacity of complex traumatized and dissociative patients as ANP to handle emotional challenges effectively.

Resting-state networks in the course of aging-differential insights from studies across the lifespan vs. amongst the old

Resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) has widely been used to examine reorganization of functional brain networks during normal aging. The extraction of generalizable age trends, however, is hampered by differences in methodological approaches, study designs and sample characteristics. Distinct age ranges of study samples thereby represent an important aspect between studies especially due to the increase in inter-individual variability over the lifespan. The current review focuses on comparing age-related differences in RSFC in the course of the whole adult lifespan versus later decades of life. We summarize and compare studies assessing age-related differences in within- and between-network RSFC of major resting-state brain networks. Differential effects of the factor age on resting-state networks can be identified when comparing studies focusing on younger versus older adults with studies investigating effects within the older adult population. These differential effects pertain to higher order and primary processing resting-state networks to a varying extent. Especially during later decades of life, other factors beyond age might come into play to understand the high inter-individual variability in RSFC.

Intrinsic dialogues between the two hemispheres in middle-aged male alcoholics: a resting-state functional MRI study

BACKGROUND

The purpose of this study was to investigate the interhemispheric intrinsic connectivity measured by resting-state functional MRI (R-fMRI) in middle-aged male alcoholics.

METHODS

Thirty male alcoholics (47.33 ± 8.30 years) and 30 healthy males (47.20 ± 6.17 years) were recruited and obtained R-fMRI data. Inter- and intrahemispheric coordination was performed by using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) and seed-based functional connectivity analysis.

RESULTS

We found significantly decreased VMHC in a set of regions in male alcoholics patients, including lateral temporal, inferior frontal gyrus, insular/insulae operculum, precuneus/posterior cingulate gyrus, and pars triangularis (P < 0.05, corrected). Subsequent seed-based functional connectivity analysis demonstrated disrupted functional connectivity between the regions of local homotopic connectivity deficits and other areas of the brain, particularly the areas subserving the default, salience, primary somatomotor, and language systems.

CONCLUSIONS

Middle-aged male alcoholic subjects demonstrated prominent reductions in inter- and intrahemispheric functional coherence. These abnormal changes may reflect degeneration of system/network integration, particularly the domains subserving default, linguistic processing, and salience integration.

Functional reorganization of neural networks involved in emotion regulation following trauma therapy for complex trauma disorders

OBJECTIVES

We investigated whether patients with complex interpersonal trauma engage neural networks that are commonly activated during cognitive reappraisal and responding naturally to affect-laden images. In this naturalistic study, we examined whether trauma treatment not only reduces symptoms but also changes neural networks involved in emotional control.

METHODS

Before and after eight weeks of phase-oriented inpatient trauma treatment, patients (n = 28) with complex posttraumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) and complex dissociative disorders (CDD) performed a cognitive reappraisal task while electroencephalography (EEG) was registered. Patients were measured as a prototypical dissociative part that aims to fulfill daily life goals while avoiding traumatic memories and associated dissociative parts. Matched healthy controls (n = 38) were measured twice as well. We examined task-related functional connectivity and assessed self-reports of clinical symptoms and emotion regulation skills.

RESULTS

Prior to treatment and compared to controls, patients showed hypoconnectivity within neural networks involved in emotional downregulation while reappraising affect-eliciting pictures as well as viewing neutral and affect-eliciting pictures. Following treatment, connectivity became normalized in these networks comprising regions associated with cognitive control and memory. Additionally, patients showed a treatment-related reduction of negative but not of positive dissociative symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first study demonstrating that trauma-focused treatment was associated with favorable changes in neural networks involved in emotional control. Emotional overregulation manifesting as negative dissociative symptoms was reduced but not emotional underregulation, manifesting as positive dissociative symptoms.

Task Context Influences Brain Activation during Music Listening

In this paper, we examined brain activation in subjects during two music listening conditions: listening while simultaneously rating the musical piece being played [Listening and Rating (LR)] and listening to the musical pieces unconstrained [Listening (L)]. Using these two conditions, we tested whether the sequence in which the two conditions were fulfilled influenced the brain activation observable during the L condition (LR → L or L → LR). We recorded high-density EEG during the playing of four well-known positively experienced soundtracks in two subject groups. One group started with the L condition and continued with the LR condition (L → LR); the second group performed this experiment in reversed order (LR → L). We computed from the recorded EEG the power for different frequency bands (theta, lower alpha, upper alpha, lower beta, and upper beta). Statistical analysis revealed that the power in all examined frequency bands increased during the L condition but only when the subjects had not had previous experience with the LR condition (i.e., L → LR). For the subjects who began with the LR condition, there were no power increases during the L condition. Thus, the previous experience with the LR condition prevented subjects from developing the particular mental state associated with the typical power increase in all frequency bands. The subjects without previous experience of the LR condition listened to the musical pieces in an unconstrained and undisturbed manner and showed a general power increase in all frequency bands. We interpret the fact that unconstrained music listening was associated with increased power in all examined frequency bands as a neural indicator of a mental state that can best be described as a mind-wandering state during which the subjects are “drawn into” the music.

Time course of EEG oscillations during repeated listening of a well-known aria

While previous studies have analyzed mean neurophysiological responses to musical stimuli, the current study aimed to identify specific time courses of electroencephalography (EEG) oscillations, which are associated with dynamic changes in the acoustic features of the musical stimulus. In addition, we were interested in whether these time courses change during a repeated presentation of the same musical piece. A total of 16 subjects repeatedly listened to the well-known aria “Nessun dorma,” sung by Paul Potts, while continuous 128-channel EEG and heart rate, as well as electrodermal responses, were recorded. The time courses for the EEG oscillations were calculated using a time resolution of 1 second for several frequency bands, on the basis of individual alpha-peak frequencies (theta, low alpha-1, low alpha-2, upper alpha, and beta). For all frequency bands, we identified a more or less continuous increase in power relative to a baseline period, indicating strong event-related synchronization (ERS) during music listening. The ERS time courses, however, did not correlate strongly with the time courses of the acoustic features of the aria. In addition, we did not observe changes in EEG oscillations after repeated presentation of the same musical piece. Aside from this distinctive feature, we identified a remarkable variability in EEG oscillations, both within and between the repeated presentations of the aria. We interpret the continuous increase in ERS observed in all frequency bands during music listening as an indicator of a particular neurophysiological and psychological state evoked by music listening. We suggest that this state is characterized by increased internal attention (accompanied by reduced external attention), increased inhibition of brain networks not involved in the generation of this internal state, the maintenance of a particular level of general alertness, and a type of brain state that can be described as “mind wandering.” The overall state can be categorized as a psychological process that may be seen as a “drawing in” to the musical piece. However, this state is not stable and varies considerably throughout the music listening session and across subjects. Most important, however, is the finding that the neurophysiological activations occurring during music listening are dynamic and not stationary.

On the subjective acceptance during cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging at 7.0 Tesla

PURPOSE

This study examines the subjective acceptance during UHF-CMR in a cohort of healthy volunteers who underwent a cardiac MR examination at 7.0T.

METHODS

Within a period of two-and-a-half years (January 2012 to June 2014) a total of 165 healthy volunteers (41 female, 124 male) without any known history of cardiac disease underwent UHF-CMR. For the assessment of the subjective acceptance a questionnaire was used to examine the participants experience prior, during and after the UHF-CMR examination. For this purpose, subjects were asked to respond to the questionnaire in an exit interview held immediately after the completion of the UHF-CMR examination under supervision of a study nurse to ensure accurate understanding of the questions. All questions were answered with "yes" or "no" including space for additional comments.

RESULTS

Transient muscular contraction was documented in 12.7% of the questionnaires. Muscular contraction was reported to occur only during periods of scanning with the magnetic field gradients being rapidly switched. Dizziness during the study was reported by 12.7% of the subjects. Taste of metal was reported by 10.1% of the study population. Light flashes were reported by 3.6% of the entire cohort. 13% of the subjects reported side effects/observations which were not explicitly listed in the questionnaire but covered by the question about other side effects. No severe side effects as vomiting or syncope after scanning occurred. No increase in heart rate was observed during the UHF-CMR exam versus the baseline clinical examination.

CONCLUSIONS

This study adds to the literature by detailing the subjective acceptance of cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging examinations at a magnetic field strength of 7.0T. Cardiac MR examinations at 7.0T are well tolerated by healthy subjects. Broader observational and multi-center studies including patient cohorts with cardiac diseases are required to gain further insights into the subjective acceptance of UHF-CMR examinations.
