Discovery of I-WP minimal-surface-based photonic crystal in the scale of a longhorn beetle

Crystal-Inspired Cellular Metamaterials and Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces

Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs) are found in many natural objects including butterfly wings, sea urchins, and biological membranes. They simultaneously have zero mean curvature at every point and a crystallographic group symmetry. A metamaterial can be created from such periodic surfaces or used as a reinforcement of a composite material. While a TPMS as a mathematical object has been known since 1865, only novel additive manufacturing (AM) technology made it possible to fabricate cellular materials with complex TPMS shapes. Cellular TPMS-based metamaterials have remarkable properties related to wetting/liquid penetration, shock absorption, and the absence of stress concentrators. Recent studies showed that TPMSs are also found in natural crystals when electron surfaces are considered. Artificial crystal-inspired metamaterials mimic such crystals including zeolites and schwarzites. These metamaterials are used for shock, acoustic waves, and vibration absorption, and as structural materials, heat exchangers, and for other applications. The choice of the crystalline cell of a material, as well as its microstructure, plays a decisive role in its properties. The new area of crystal-inspired materials has many common features with traditional biomimetics with models being borrowed from nature and adjusted for engineering applications.

Anoplophora graafi longhorn beetle coloration is due to disordered diamond-like packed spheres

While artificial photonic materials are typically highly ordered, photonic structures in many species of birds and insects do not possess a long-range order. Studying their order-disorder interplay sheds light on the origin of the photonic band gap. Here, we investigated the scale morphology of the Anoplophora graafi longhorn beetle. Combining small-angle X-ray scattering and slice-and-view FIB-SEM tomography with molecular dynamics and optical simulations, we characterised the chitin sphere assemblies within blue and green A. graafi scales. The low volume fraction of spheres and the number of their nearest neighbours are incompatible with any known close-packed sphere morphology. A short-range diamond lattice with long-range disorder best describes the sphere assembly, which will inspire the development of new colloid-based photonic materials.

Integrated evaluation of biomechanical and biological properties of the biomimetic structural bone scaffold: Biomechanics, simulation analysis, and osteogenesis

A porous structure is essential for bone implants because it increases the bone ingrowth space and improves mechanical and biological properties. The biomimetically designed porous Voronoi scaffold can reconstruct the structure and function of cancellous bone; however, its comprehensive properties need to be investigated further. In this study, algorithms based on scaling factors were used to design the Voronoi scaffolds. Classic approaches, such as computer-aided design and the implicit surface method, have been used to design Diamond, Gyroid, and I-WP scaffolds as controls. All scaffolds were prepared by selective laser melting of titanium alloys and three-dimensional printing. Mechanical tests, finite element analysis, and in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to investigate the biomechanical, cytologic, and osteogenic performance of the scaffolds, while computational fluid dynamics simulations were used to explore the underlying mechanisms. Diamond scaffolds have a better loading capacity, and the mechanical behaviors and fluid flow of Voronoi scaffolds are similar to those of the human trabecular bone. Cells showed more proliferation and distribution on the Diamond and Voronoi scaffolds and exhibited evident differentiation on Gyroid and Voronoi scaffolds. Bone formation was apparent on the inner part of the Gyroid, the outer part of the I-WP, and the entire Diamond and Voronoi scaffolds. The hydrodynamic properties and stimulus response of cells influenced by the porous structure account for the varied biological performance of the scaffolds. The Voronoi scaffolds with bionic mechanical behavior and an appropriate hydrodynamic response exhibit evident cell growth and osteogenesis, making them preferable for porous structural bone implants.

A Novel Ultra-Wideband Electromagnetic-Wave-Absorbing Metastructure Inspired by Bionic Gyroid Structures

Traditional honeycomb-like structural electromagnetic (EM)-wave-absorbing materials have been widely used in various equipment as multifunctional materials. However, current EM-wave-absorbing materials are limited by narrow absorption bandwidths and incidence angles because of their anisotropic structural morphology. The work presented here proposes a novel EM-wave-absorbing metastructure with an isotropic morphology inspired by the gyroid microstructures seen in Parides sesostris butterfly wings. A matching redesign methodology between the material and subwavelength scale properties of the gyroid microstructure is proposed, inspired by the interaction mechanism between the microstructure and the material properties on the EM-wave-absorption performance of the prepared metastructure. The bioinspired metastructure is fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) and subsequent coating through dipping processes, filled with dielectric lossy materials. Based on simulations and experiments, the metastructure designed in this work exhibits an ultrawide absorption bandwidth covering the frequency range of 2-40 GHz with a fractional bandwidth of 180% at normal incidence. Moreover, the metastructure has a stable frequency response when the incident angle is 60° under transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization. Finally, the synergistic mechanism between the microstructure and the material is elucidated, which provides a new paradigm for the design of novel ultra-broadband EM-absorbing materials.

Polarization-dependent reflection of I-WP minimal-surface-based photonic crystal

Brilliantly colored butterflies and weevils are known to utilize photonic crystals for their coloration. Interestingly, the morphology of such crystals made of cuticle is based on triply periodic minimal surfaces such as gyroid and diamond surfaces. Recently, a different minimal-surface-based photonic crystal, the I-WP surface, was discovered inside the scale of a longhorn beetle. The letter I is derived from expressing the body center symmetry and WP is derived from a wrapped package. It was reported that the brilliant green color is produced by the photonic band gap existing along the [110] direction of this crystal. In this study, the polarization dependence of the reflection from this photonic crystal was investigated. A peculiar reflectance spectrum with two peaks was observed under the crossed polarizers. This characteristic is theoretically reproduced by calculating the reflectance from a finite-sized photonic crystal, and the spectral shape is explained based on the symmetry of the electromagnetic modes. In addition, inspired by this longhorn beetle, a photonic crystal structure consisting of colloidal particles is proposed, which has a similar polarization effect.
