Synthesis and applications of MANs/poly(MMA-co-BA) nanocomposite latex by miniemulsion polymerization

Template-Directed Polymerization of Binary Acrylate Monomers on Surface-Activated Lignin Nanoparticles in Toughening of Bio-Latex Films

Fabricating bio-latex colloids with core-shell nanostructure is an effective method for obtaining films with enhanced mechanical characteristics. Nano-sized lignin is rising as a class of sustainable nanomaterials that can be incorporated into latex colloids. Fundamental knowledge of the correlation between surface chemistry of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) and integration efficiency in latex colloids and from it thermally processed latex films are scarce. Here, an approach to integrate self-assembled nanospheres of allylated lignin as the surface-activated cores in a seeded free-radical emulsion copolymerization of butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate is proposed. The interfacial-modulating function on allylated LNPs regulates the emulsion polymerization and it successfully produces a multi-energy dissipative latex film structure containing a lignin-dominated core (16% dry weight basis). At an optimized allyl-terminated surface functionality of 1.04 mmol g^-1 , the LNPs-integrated latex film exhibits extremely high toughness value above 57.7 MJ m^-3 . With multiple morphological and microstructural characterizations, the well-ordered packing of latex colloids under the nanoconfinement of LNPs in the latex films is revealed. It is concluded that the surface chemistry metrics of colloidal cores in terms of the abundance of polymerization-modulating anchors and their accessibility have a delicate control over the structural evolution of core-shell latex colloids.

The morphology of poly(terminal vinyl dimethicone-co-methyl methacrylate-co-n-butyl acrylate)/pigment composite film and its application in pigment printing of polyester fabric

In this study, a series of poly(terminal vinyl dimethicone-co-methyl methacrylate-co-n-butyl acrylate)/pigment composite particles (P(DMS-Acr)/PB CPs) were successfully prepared via miniemulsion polymerization and their latex film microstructures on were examined carefully using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and so on. Significant phase separation was observed after film formation, and the copper phthalocyanine blue (PB) particles tend to distribute in the polysiloxane island phase. After baking at 120 °C, the protrusions were generated. With increasing amount of vinyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane (ViPDMS) or baking time, the number of the protrusions became more and the appearance of the protrusions tends to be sharp. When the P(DMS-Acr)/PB CPs were applied in fabric printing, a continuous film was formed on the surface of the fabric at room temperature and therefore the gaps between yarns were blocked. However, the gaps in the fabric reappeared after baking at 120 °C, which could be attributed to the rapid flow of the polymer component. Finally, the fiber was coated with a layer of latex film containing a large number of mastoid structures, and the printed fabric could still retain the majority of the gaps between yarns and between fibers. Therefore, the printed fabric exhibited excellent performances such as good air permeability, softness, and rubbing fastness.

Poly(terminal vinyl dimethicone-co-methyl methacrylate-co-n-butyl acrylate)/pigment composite latexes were prepared by miniemulsion polymerization and the morphology of the composite film on the surface of polyester fabric and substrate was studied.

Preparation of ZnO Nanoparticles with High Dispersibility Based on Oriented Attachment (OA) Process

Understanding nanoparticle growth mechanisms is crucial for the synthesis of nanocrystals with desired biological and chemical properties. Growth of nanocrystals by oriented attachment (OA) is frequently reported as a method supplementary to the classical growth by Ostwald ripening (OR) process. In this work, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by wet chemical method. Size/shape evolution of ZnO NPs in ethanol solution was systematically studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, a detailed process of the nanoparticle growth-based OA mechanism is discussed. Results revealed that reaction conditions affect size/shape of NPs and change their surface structure: prior to OA, the surface of adjacent particles transformed into their "rough" states. We proved that stability of the solution was significantly improved in this state. Such a state is important to design nanoparticles with high stability and as nano-suspensions with special physical and/or chemical properties. This state is a critical step in enhancing OA process.
