Atmospheric reduced nitrogen: Sources, transformations, effects, and management

Human activities have increased atmospheric emissions and deposition of oxidized and reduced forms of nitrogen, but emission control programs have largely focused on oxidized nitrogen. As a result, in many regions of the world emissions of oxidized nitrogen are decreasing while emissions of reduced nitrogen are increasing. Emissions of reduced nitrogen largely originate from livestock waste and fertilizer application, with contributions from transportation sources in urban areas. Observations suggest a discrepancy between trends in emissions and deposition of reduced nitrogen in the U.S., likely due to an underestimate in emissions. In the atmosphere, ammonia reacts with oxides of sulfur and nitrogen to form fine particulate matter that impairs health and visibility and affects climate forcings. Recent reductions in emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides have limited partitioning with ammonia, decreasing long-range transport. Continuing research is needed to improve understanding of how shifting emissions alter formation of secondary particulates and patterns of transport and deposition of reactive nitrogen. Satellite remote sensing has potential for monitoring atmospheric concentrations and emissions of ammonia, but there remains a need to maintain and strengthen ground-based measurements and continue development of chemical transport models. Elevated nitrogen deposition has decreased plant and soil microbial biodiversity and altered the biogeochemical function of terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal ecosystems. Further study is needed on differential effects of oxidized versus reduced nitrogen and pathways and timescales of ecosystem recovery from elevated nitrogen deposition. Decreases in deposition of reduced nitrogen could alleviate exceedances of critical loads for terrestrial and freshwater indicators in many U.S. areas. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency should consider using critical loads as a basis for setting standards to protect public welfare and ecosystems. The U.S. and other countries might look to European experience for approaches to control emissions of reduced nitrogen from agricultural and transportation sectors.Implications: In this Critical Review we synthesize research on effects, air emissions, environmental transformations, and management of reduced forms of nitrogen. Emissions of reduced nitrogen affect human health, the structure and function of ecosystems, and climatic forcings. While emissions of oxidized forms of nitrogen are regulated in the U.S., controls on reduced forms are largely absent. Decreases in emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides coupled with increases in ammonia are shifting the gas-particle partitioning of ammonia and decreasing long-range atmospheric transport of reduced nitrogen. Effort is needed to understand, monitor, and manage emissions of reduced nitrogen in a changing environment.

Organic Peroxides in Aerosol: Key Reactive Intermediates for Multiphase Processes in the Atmosphere

Organic peroxides (POs) are organic molecules with one or more peroxide (-O-O-) functional groups. POs are commonly regarded as chemically labile termination products from gas-phase radical chemistry and therefore serve as temporary reservoirs for oxidative radicals (HOx and ROx) in the atmosphere. Owing to their ubiquity, active gas-particle partitioning behavior, and reactivity, POs are key reactive intermediates in atmospheric multiphase processes determining the life cycle (formation, growth, and aging), climate, and health impacts of aerosol. However, there remain substantial gaps in the origin, molecular diversity, and fate of POs due to their complex nature and dynamic behavior. Here, we summarize the current understanding on atmospheric POs, with a focus on their identification and quantification, state-of-the-art analytical developments, molecular-level formation mechanisms, multiphase chemical transformation pathways, as well as environmental and health impacts. We find that interactions with SO2 and transition metal ions are generally the fast PO transformation pathways in atmospheric liquid water, with lifetimes estimated to be minutes to hours, while hydrolysis is particularly important for α-substituted hydroperoxides. Meanwhile, photolysis and thermolysis are likely minor sinks for POs. These multiphase PO transformation pathways are distinctly different from their gas-phase fates, such as photolysis and reaction with OH radicals, which highlights the need to understand the multiphase partitioning of POs. By summarizing the current advances and remaining challenges for the investigation of POs, we propose future research priorities regarding their origin, fate, and impacts in the atmosphere.

Review of the influencing factors of secondary organic aerosol formation and aging mechanism based on photochemical smog chamber simulation methods

The formation and aging mechanism of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and its influencing factors have attracted increasing attention in recent years because of their effects on climate change, atmospheric quality and human health. However, there are still large errors between air quality model simulation results and field observations. The currently undetected components during the formation and aging of SOA due to the limitation of current monitoring techniques and the interactions among multiple SOA formation influencing factors might be the main reasons for the differences. In this paper, we present a detailed review of the complex dynamic physical and chemical processes and the corresponding influencing factors involved in SOA formation and aging. And all these results were mainly based the studies of photochemical smog chamber simulation. Although the properties of precursor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), oxidants (such as OH radicals), and atmospheric environmental factors (such as NO_x, SO₂, NH₃, light intensity, temperature, humidity and seed aerosols) jointly influence the products and yield of SOA, the nucleation and vapor pressure of these products were found to be the most fundamental aspects when interpreting the dynamics of the SOA formation and aging process. The development of techniques for measuring intermediate species in SOA generation processes and the study of SOA generation and aging mechanism in complex systems should be important topics of future SOA research.

Formation of extremely low-volatility organic compounds from styrene ozonolysis: Implication for nucleation

Styrene is a highly reactive compound with the dual nature of aromatics and olefins. This work presents evidence for formation of extremely low-volatility organic compounds (ELVOCs) from styrene ozonolysis. The molecules of ELVOCs were analyzed using a high-resolution orbitrap mass spectrometer. The results show that ELVOCs were oligomers characterized by stabilized Criegee radicals (SCIs) as chain units. The addition of C₆H₅CHOO (SCI1) or CH₂OO (SCI2) can dramatically decrease the oligomers' volatility. At low relative humidity (RH), ELVOCs are mainly formed from the reaction of RO₂ radical, C₆H₅OO·, with SCI1 and SCI2; however, ELVOCs are primarily produced by the reaction between benzoic acid and SCI1 at high RH. Ambient particles were also collected to propose the probable oligomers from styrene-SCI. Our results suggest that styrene-SCI derived ELVOCs may act as nucleating agents, potentially providing an experimental basis for nucleation events that frequently occur in urban areas.

Temperature-dependent kinetics of the atmospheric reaction between CH2OO and acetone

Criegee intermediates are important oxidants produced in the ozonolysis of alkenes in the atmosphere. Quantitative kinetics of the reactions of Criegee intermediates are required for atmospheric modeling. However, the experimental studies do not cover the full relevant range of temperature and pressure. Here we report the quantitative kinetics of CH₂OO + CH₃C(O)CH₃ by using our recently developed dual strategy that combines coupled cluster theory with high excitation levels for conventional transition state theory and well validated levels of density functional theory for direct dynamics calculations using canonical variational transition theory including tunneling. We find that the W3X-L//DF-CCSD(T)-F12b/jun-cc-pVDZ electronic structure method can be used to obtain quantitative kinetics of the CH₂OO + CH₃C(O)CH₃ reaction. Whereas previous investigations considered a one-step mechanistic pathway, we find that the CH₂OO + CH₃C(O)CH₃ reaction occurs in a stepwise manner. This has implications for the modeling of Criegee-intermediate reactions with other ketones and with aldehydes. In the kinetics calculations, we show that recrossing effects of the conventional transition state are negligible for determining the rate constant of CH₂OO + CH₃C(O)CH₃. The present findings reveal that the rate ratio between CH₂OO + CH₃C(O)CH₃ and OH + CH₃C(O)CH₃ has a significant negative dependence on temperature such that the CH₂OO + CH₃C(O)CH₃ reaction can contribute as a significant sink for atmospheric CH₃C(O)CH₃ at low temperature. The present findings should have broad implications in understanding the reactions of Criegee intermediates with carbonyl compounds and ketones in the atmosphere.

Gas-phase and aqueous-surface reaction mechanism of Criegee radicals with serine and nucleation of products: A theoretical study

Criegee intermediates (CIs) are short-lived carbonyl oxides, which can affect the budget of OH radicals, ozone, ammonia, organic/inorganic acids in the troposphere. This study investigated the reaction of CIs with serine (Ser) in the gas phase by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and at the gas-liquid interface by using Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD). The results reveal that the reactivity of the three functional groups of Ser can be ordered as follows: COOH > NH₂ > OH. Water-mediated reactions of CIs with NH₂ and OH groups of Ser on the droplet follow the proton exchange mechanism. The products, sulfuric acids, ammonia, and water molecules form stable clusters within 20 ns. This study shows that hydroperoxide products can contribute to new particle formation (NPF). The result deepens the understanding of the reaction of CIs with multifunctional pollutants and atmospheric behavior of CIs in polluted areas.

Ozonolysis of Permethrin in the Atmosphere: Mechanism, Kinetics, and Evaluation of Toxicity

Pyrethroid, a pesticide widely used worldwide, could mimic, block, or synergize the effects of endogenous hormones in humans or mammals after entering into the atmosphere and after being sprayed and applied in large quantities. This research aims to study the mechanism, kinetics, and eco-toxicity evaluation of the ozonolysis of permethrin (PER)-one of the typical pyrethroid (type I) pesticides. Existing experimental studies only predicted that ozonolysis of PER could generate a cycloperoxy analogue of PER (IM13-1-11), and the reaction mechanism has not yet been completed. To make up for the lack of experimental results, the 13 primary reaction pathways of PER and ozone, as well as the subsequent reactions of Criegee intermediates with small molecules such as NO_x, CO_x, SO₂, and O₂, have been studied to propose new reaction paths by quantum chemical calculations in this work. We calculated the total reaction rate constant of PER and ozone at 298 K and 1 atm based on the calculated thermodynamic data and the transition state theory (TST), which was compared with the experimental values to prove the reliability of our results. Based on the quantitative structure and activity relationship, we predicted the acute and chronic toxicity of PER and its products of ozonolysis to three representative organisms-fish, daphnia, and green algae to avoid animal experiments. The results show that ozonolysis products of PER are still extremely harmful to the environment and should be taken seriously, although the products have less toxicity than PER.

A large-scale outdoor atmospheric simulation smog chamber for studying atmospheric photochemical processes: Characterization and preliminary application

Understanding the formation mechanisms of secondary air pollution is very important for the formulation of air pollution control countermeasures in China. Thus, a large-scale outdoor atmospheric simulation smog chamber was constructed at Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (the CRAES Chamber), which was designed for simulating the atmospheric photochemical processes under the conditions close to the real atmospheric environment. The chamber consisted of a 56-m³ fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) Teflon film reactor, an electrically-driven stainless steel alloy shield, an auxiliary system, and multiple detection instrumentations. By performing a series of characterization experiments, we obtained basic parameters of the CRAES chamber, such as the mixing ability, the background reactivity, and the wall loss rates of gaseous compounds (propene, NO, NO₂, ozone) and aerosols (ammonium sulfate). Oxidation experiments were also performed to study the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA), including α-pinene ozonolysis, propene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene photooxidation. Temperature and seed effects on the vapor wall loss and SOA yields were obtained in this work: higher temperature and the presence of seed could reduce the vapor wall loss; SOA yield was found to depend inversely on temperature, and the presence of seed could increase SOA yield. The seed was suggested to be used in the chamber to reduce the interaction between the gas phase and chamber walls. The results above showed that the CRAES chamber was reliable and could meet the demands for investigating tropospheric chemistry.

Atmospheric Chemistry of CH2OO: The Hydrolysis of CH2OO in Small Clusters of Sulfuric Acid

The hydrolysis of CH₂OO is not only a dominant sink for the CH₂OO intermediate in the atmosphere but also a key process in the formation of aerosols. Herein, the reaction mechanism and kinetics for the hydrolysis of CH₂OO catalyzed by the precursors of atmospheric aerosols, including H₂SO₄, H₂SO₄···H₂O, and (H₂SO₄)₂, have been studied theoretically at the CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVDZ-F12//B3LYP/6-311+G(2df,2pd) level. The calculated results show that the three catalysts decrease the energy barrier by over 10.3 kcal·mol^-1; at the same time, the product formation of HOCH₂OOH is more strongly bonded to the three catalysts than to the reactants CH₂OO and H₂O, revealing that small clusters of sulfuric acid promote the hydrolysis of CH₂OO both kinetically and thermodynamically. Kinetic simulations show that the H₂SO₄-assisted reaction is more favorable than the H₂SO₄···H₂O- (the pseudo-first-order rate constant being 27.9-11.5 times larger) and (H₂SO₄)₂- (between 2.8 × 10⁴ and 3.4 × 10⁵ times larger) catalyzed reactions. Additionally, due to relatively lower concentration of H₂SO₄, the hydrolysis of CH₂OO with H₂SO₄ cannot compete with the CH₂OO + H₂O or (H₂O)₂ reaction within the temperature range of 280-320 K, since its pseudo-first-order rate ratio is smaller by 4-7 or 6-8 orders of magnitude, respectively. However, the present results provide a good example of how small clusters of sulfuric acid catalyze the hydrolysis of an important atmospheric species.

Optimization of a volatile organic compound control strategy in an oil industry center in Canada by evaluating ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation potential

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a vital role in the formation of photochemical smog and haze in large urban environments. Previous source apportionment studies have focused on the contribution of different sources to VOC concentration with a view to pinpointing the major culprits for effective emission mitigation. However, different VOC sources may have different ozone (O₃) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potentials. From a control perspective, it would be more rational to consider the role of individual VOC sources in secondary pollution; therefore, here, we propose a tiered source identification method that considers the formation potentials of O₃ and SOA, which we applied in Calgary, Alberta, a site under the influence of multiple competing VOC sources. The pollution characteristics, secondary pollutant formation potential, and geographical origin of VOC sources were investigated over a five-year period. Seven major sources were identified using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, among which vehicle exhausts and solid fuel combustion were the dominant VOC sources responsible for O₃ (60%) and SOA (63%) formation. Combustion of both liquid fuel (gasoline and diesel) and solid fuel (wood and coal) has exceeded the contribution of oil and gas production and become the top contributor to O₃ and aerosol pollution in Calgary. This finding is consistent with the significant reduction (32.2-99.8%) in oil and gas production in Calgary over the period of 2013-2017. The source apportionment results show that the primary VOC source has shifted from conventional oil and gas extraction to a mixture of vehicle exhausts and oil and gas extraction, indicating the effectiveness of emission control measures taken in the energy sectors. Moreover, regionally transported VOCs from combustion sources in southeastern British Columbia have greatly increased the VOC level and secondary pollutant formation in Calgary. To effectively alleviate secondary pollution problems, the performance of joint pollution control measures has been suggested by the governments of both Alberta and British Columbia. These findings reveal that the tiered source identification strategy combining the traditional receptor model with socioeconomic factors, emission inventory, and source region analysis is a robust and promising tool for the interpretation of source apportionment results and optimization of secondary pollution control.
