Effect on electrospun fibres by synthesis of high branching polylactic acid

Modification of Poly(lactic acid) with Orange Peel Powder as Biodegradable Composite

Traditional fossil-based plastic usage and disposal has been one of the largest environmental concerns due to its non-biodegradable nature and high energy consumption during the manufacturing process. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as a renewable polymer derived from natural sources with properties comparable to classical plastics and low environmental cost has gained much attention as a safer alternative. Abundantly generated orange peel waste is rich in valuable components and there is still limited study on the potential uses of orange peel waste in reinforcing the PLA matrix. In this study, orange peel fine powder (OPP) synthesized from dried orange peel waste was added into PLA solution. PLA/OPP solutions at different OPP loadings, i.e., 0, 10, 20, 40, and 60 wt% were then casted out as thin films through solution casting method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis has shown that the OPP is incorporated into the PLA matrix, with OH groups and C=C stretching from OPP can be observed in the spectra. Tensile test results have reviewed that the addition of OPP has decreased the tensile strength and Young's modulus of PLA, but significantly improve the elongation at break by 49 to 737%. Water contact angle analysis shows that hydrophilic OPP has modified the surface hydrophobicity of PLA with a contact angle ranging from 70.12° to 88.18°, but higher loadings lead to decrease of surface energy. It is proven that addition of OPP improves the biodegradability of PLA, where PLA/60 wt% OPP composite shows the best biodegradation performance after 28 days with 60.43% weight loss. Lastly, all PLA/OPP composites have better absorption in alkaline solution.

Recent advances in polymer scaffolds for biomedical applications

The review provides insights into current advancements in electrospinning-assisted manufacturing for optimally designing biomedical devices for their prospective applications in tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, sensing, and enzyme immobilization, and others. Further, the evolution of electrospinning-based hybrid biomedical devices using a combined approach of 3 D printing and/or film casting/molding, to design dimensionally stable membranes/micro-nanofibrous assemblies/patches/porous surfaces, etc. is reported. The influence of various electrospinning parameters, polymeric material, testing environment, and other allied factors on the morphological and physico-mechanical properties of electrospun (nano-/micro-fibrous) mats (EMs) and fibrous assemblies have been compiled and critically discussed. The spectrum of operational research and statistical approaches that are now being adopted for efficient optimization of electrospinning process parameters so as to obtain the desired response (physical and structural attributes) has prospectively been looked into. Further, the present review summarizes some current limitations and future perspectives for modeling architecturally novel hybrid 3 D/selectively textured structural assemblies, such as biocompatible, non-toxic, and bioresorbable mats/scaffolds/membranes/patches with apt mechanical stability, as biological substrates for various regenerative and non-regenerative therapeutic devices.

Preparation and Characterization of Electrospun Polylactic Acid (PLA) Fiber Loaded with Birch Bark Triterpene Extract for Wound Dressing

Drug-loaded electrospun fibers have attracted increasing attention as a promising wound dressing material due to their capability of preventing from infections and inflammation and maintaining an appropriate environment for wound healing. In this study, polylactic acid (PLA), which is widely used in wound management, was chosen as electrospinnable polymer. A triterpene extract (TE) from the outer bark of birch known for its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and wound healing effects was chosen to produce TE-loaded PLA electrospun fibers for wound dressing. A binary solvent system of dichloromethane (DCM) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was employed, and the ratio of the solvents was optimized for preparing smooth and uniform fibers. The morphology of TE-loaded PLA electrospun fibers was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The entrapment of TE in PLA fibers was confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to analyze the solid state of TE in PLA fibers. The release behavior of TE was assayed by a shaking flask method for a period of 96 h. The results revealed that TE-loaded electrospun PLA microfibers could be reliably prepared and are promising future candidates in wound therapy.

Physicomechanical performance and encapsulation efficiency of β-cyclodextrin loaded functional electrospun mats based on aliphatic polyesters and their blends

Designing complex-forming biodegradable and biocompatible electrospun mats (EMs) by incorporating β- cyclodextrin (β-CD) into polylactic acid (PLA)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) (70:30 w/w) blend based polyester matrix. The influence of β-CD loading on the morphological, thermal, and microstructural properties was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The studies revealed the presence of characteristic interactions between the polymer matrix and β-CD moieties. Further, the quasi-static mechanical properties of EMs were evaluated using a universal testing machine. An enhancement in modulus and strength was obtained for ∼ 2.5-5 phr of β-CD content and beyond ∼ 5 phr of β-CD content, the mechanical properties of EMs were observed to deteriorate. The contact angle studies indicated a decrease in hydrophobicity of PLA/PCL-based EMs with the increase in β-CD content. The swelling and weight loss studies in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) indicated a subsequent release of β-CD from the EMs. FT-IR and ¹H NMR spectra elucidated the removal of curcumin from ethanol-water solutions and its simultaneous encapsulation in β-CD hydrophobic cavities (released) of fabricated EMs. Thus, the study demonstrates the development of aliphatic polyester-based biodegradable-functional EMs with tunable physico-mechanical properties for biomedical applications, facilitating encapsulation and rapid removal of waste hydrophobic ultrafine molecules from the system.

Effects of synthesised polyaniline (PAni) contents on the anti-static properties of PAni-based polylactic acid (PLA) films

An anti-static polymer film was prepared using biodegradable poly(lactic acid) as a matrix and polyaniline (PAni) as an anti-static agent. It is aimed to be applied in packaging applications to dissipate the accumulated charges. The anti-static properties of PLA films were investigated with various PAni contents ranging from 0% to 20% through ex situ polymerisation by the solution casting method. PAni was synthesised in the solution form through chemical oxidation at 0 °C. The synthesis of PAni was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy. The mechanical and anti-static properties of the samples were characterised using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) and a resistivity meter, respectively. The experimental results indicated that incorporation of PAni into PLA films affected the morphology, anti-static and mechanical properties of the samples. PLA/PAni showed a compact surface with a porous structure, reflecting the interfacial interaction between PLA and PAni in the presence of a plasticiser. It was discovered and compared with other compositions, PLA with 15% PAni exhibited excellent anti-static performance with 2.45 × 10¹⁰ ohm/sq surface resistivity and the highest tensile strength, elongation at break and modulus of 29.3 ± 2.4 MPa, 60.1 ± 1.6% and 1364.0 ± 85.2 MPa respectively. Hence, PAni is a good candidate to be used in PLA/PAni systems by giving a suitable surface resistivity that can potentially be applied in anti-static packaging applications.

Synthesis of Ultrahigh Molecular Weight PLAs Using a Phenoxy-Imine Al(III) Complex

l- and d-lactide polymerization kinetics using phenoxy-imine ligands of the type Me2Al[O-2-tert-Bu-6-(C6F5N=CH)C6H3] in the presence of n-butanol and benzyl alcohol by ring-opening polymerization into polylactide are investigated. Effects of initiator concentration, catalyst concentration, polymerization temperature, and time on the molecular weight of poly-l-lactide are also investigated. Purification and drying of l-lactide are found to significantly influence the polymerization kinetics and the final molecular weight achieved. Ultrahigh molecular weight poly(l-lactic acid) PLLA (M w = 1.4 × 106 g/mol with Đ = 1.8) and ultrahigh molecular weight poly(d-lactic acid) PDLA (M w = 1.3 × 106 g/mol with Đ = 2.0) are obtained when polymerization is performed with a molar ratio of monomer to catalyst (LA/Al) of 8000 for 72 h at 120 °C in the presence of benzyl alcohol with conversions of 96 and 91%, respectively. We report for the first time the synthesis of ultrahigh molecular weight poly-l- and d-lactide using the Me2Al[O-2-tert-Bu-6-(C6F5N=CH)C6H3] catalyst. The identified catalyst is found to be suitable for the synthesis of a broad range of molecular weights.
