Heavy metal pollution and the role of inorganic nanomaterials in environmental remediation

Portrait of a UK-Africa Capacity Building Initiative Consortium 2015-2022: the Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa and United Kingdom Materials Initiative (CaGSUMI) for developing materials for solar cells

The CaGSUMI consortium was funded by the Royal Society-Department for International Development (later the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) on the Africa Capacity Building Initiative programme between the years 2015 and 2022 and involved three Sub-Saharan African universities: Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana, University of Yaoundé I, Cameroon, and the University of Zululand, South Africa; and the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. The project was used to cement an emergent UK-Africa network in the areas of materials chemistry related to renewable energy generation with both thin films and nanomaterials. The consortium's outputs led to numerous publications of African science in international journals, a number of graduated PhDs who went on to permanent academic positions and prestigious fellowships, the establishment of a capacity-building plan relevant to the chemistry departments in each of the African countries, and the installation of a number of first-in-kind pieces of kit for African laboratories that will keep them on a competitive footing at an international level for the next decade and more.

Metal nanostructures in polymeric matrices for optical detection and removal of heavy metal ions, pesticides and dyes from water

Water pollutants such as heavy metal ions, pesticides, and dyes pose a worldwide issue. Their presence in water resources interferes with the normal growth mechanisms of living beings and causes long or short-term diseases. For this reason, research continuously tends to develop innovative, selective, and efficient processes or technologies to detect and remove pollutants from water. This review provides an up-to-date overview on metal nanoparticles loaded in polymeric matrices, such as hydrogels and membranes, and employed as optical sensors and as removing materials for water pollutants. The synthetic pathways of nanomaterials loading into polymeric matrices have been analyzed, particularly focusing on noble metal nanoparticles, noble metal nanoclusters, and metal oxide nanoparticles. Moreover, the sensing properties of modified matrices towards water pollutants have been discussed in addition to the interaction mechanisms between the sensors and the toxic compounds. The last part of the review has been devoted to illustrating the separation mechanism and removal performance of membranes loaded with nanomaterials in the treatment and purification of water streams from different contaminants (heavy metals, dyes and pesticides).

Effective chromium removal of metal anchored alginate-chitosan binary bio-composites

Water is the most essential resource for the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem. Any change in the quality of this water may cause adverse impact on the ecosystem. Hexavalent chromium is one such important pollutant that gets exposed in the water mainly through anthropogenic processes. Adsorption is considered to be an effective, economic and easiest method for remediation of such pollutants. Amongst the innumerable adsorbents available, biopolymers fetch the interest due to its cost effectiveness, efficiency and biocompatibility. But, the mechanical strength and workability of such biopolymers makes it unfit to use as an adsorbent. To improve these drawbacks, synthesis of biopolymeric composites become the need of the hour. So, an attempt was made here to synthesize metal cross-linked binary bio-composites using Alginate and Chitosan polymer matrix. Synthesized bio-composites were characterised with the aid of FTIR, XPS, Thermal analysis, SEM with EDAX and subjected for hexavalent chromium removal from water. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with 95 % confidence intervals was used to assess the significance of independent variables and their interactions. Adsorption studies were done using batch process and to achieve greater sorption, various influencing parameters were optimized one by one. While investigating one parameter, other parameters were kept unaltered. Optimization was done for the parameters like contact time, dosage of the adsorbent, pH of the medium and presence of co-ions. Contact time and dosage for all the composites was 30 mins and 0.1 g respectively. Amongst the composites, Zirconium loaded binary composite possess high sorption capacity of around 14.8 mg/g. While Calcium and Iron loaded composites exhibit sorption capacity of around 9.8 mg/g and 10.4 mg/g respectively. Presence of other co-ions in the medium doesn't affect the sorption process. Isothermal studies infer the adsorption follows Langmuir model and thermodynamic parameters concludes the endothermic and randomness of the adsorption. The bio-composites can be recycled and used upto three cycles. Field trial was conducted and the composites work well in such conditions.

Novel modified semi-carbonized fiber prepared using discarded clothes for derisking Cu(II) and Pb(II) contaminated water

We report a novel modified semi-carbonized fiber (CF) prepared using cotton and acrylic clothes for derisking contaminated water to realize the resource utilization of discarded clothes in wastewater treatment. In this study, amphoteric and auxiliary modifiers were used to modify CFs for preparing amphoteric and amphoteric-auxiliary CFs. The basic physicochemical properties of different modified CFs were determined, and the microscopic morphology of modified CFs was detected. The isothermal adsorption characteristics of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on different modified CFs were investigated by the batch method, and the effect mechanisms of temperature, pH, ionic strength, and material dose were compared. Physicochemical properties and microscopic morphology results proved that amphoteric and auxiliary modifiers were modified on the CF surface and changed the surface properties of CF. The adsorption capacities of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on modified CFs increased with the increase in equilibrium concentration of Cu(II) and Pb(II), and the isotherm was more suitable for Freundlich model fitting than that of the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities (qm) of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on different modified CFs were 60.72-81.26 mg/g and 102.58-161.72 mg/g, respectively, and presented the trend of amphoteric-auxiliary CFs > amphoteric CFs > CFs. Increasing pH and temperature and decreasing ionic strength and material dose were beneficial to Cu(II) and Pb(II) adsorption. The Cu(II) and Pb(II) adsorption process was a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-increasing reaction, and the adsorption rate was controlled by chemisorption. The adsorption amount of amphoteric-auxiliary CFs maintained about 65% of original materials after 3 times of regeneration. Electrostatic attraction, precipitation, complexation, and ion exchange were the main adsorption mechanisms. The cation exchange capacity and total pore volume of modified CFs were key to determining qm of Cu(II) and Pb(II).

Transition Metal Catalysts for Atmospheric Heavy Metal Removal: A Review of Current Innovations and Advances

Atmospheric heavy metal pollution presents a severe threat to public health and environmental stability. Transition metal catalysts have emerged as a potent solution for the selective capture and removal of these pollutants. This review provides a comprehensive summary of current advancements in the field, emphasizing the efficiency and specificity of nanostructured transition metals, including manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc. Looking forward, we delve into the prospective trajectory of catalyst development, underscoring the need for materials with enhanced stability, regenerability, and environmental compatibility. We project that advancements in computational materials science, nanotechnology, and green chemistry will be pivotal in discovering innovative catalysts that are economically and environmentally sustainable. The integration of smart technologies for real-time monitoring and adaptive control is anticipated to revolutionize heavy metal remediation, ensuring efficient and responsive pollution abatement strategies in the face of evolving industrial scenarios and regulatory landscapes.

A review on adsorption of heavy metals from wastewater using carbon nanotube and graphene-based nanomaterials

The rampant rise in world population, industrialization, and urbanization expedite the contamination of water sources. The presence of the non-biodegradable character of heavy metals in waterways badly affects the ecological balance. In this modern era, the unavailability of getting clear water as well as the downturn in water quality is a major concern. Therefore, the effective removal of heavy metals has become much more important than before. In recent years, the attention to better wastewater remediation was directed towards adsorption techniques with novel adsorbents such as carbon nanomaterials. This review paper primarily emphasizes the fundamental concepts, structures, and unique surface properties of novel adsorbents, the harmful effects of various heavy metals, and the adsorption mechanism. This review will give an insight into the current status of research in the realm of sustainable wastewater treatment, applications of carbon nanomaterials, different types of functionalized carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide, and their adsorption capacity. The importance of MD simulations and density functional theory (DFT) in the elimination of heavy metals from aqueous media is also discussed. In addition to that, the effect of factors on heavy metal adsorption such as electric field and pressure is addressed.

Recent advances in nanotechnology for remediation of heavy metals

Heavy metal contamination of the environment has become an alarming environmental issue that has constituted serious threats to humans and the ecosystem. These metals have been identified as a priority class of pollutants due to their persistency in the environment and their potential to bioaccumulate in biological systems. Consequently, the remediation of heavy metals from various environmental matrices becomes a critical topic from the biological and environmental perspectives. To this end, various research interests have shifted to the need to put forward economically feasible and highly efficient approaches for mitigating these contaminants in the environment. Thus, numerous conventional approaches have reportedly been employed for the remediation of heavy metals, with each of the methods having its inherent limitations. More recently, studies have revealed that nanomaterials in their various forms show unique potential for the removal of various contaminants including heavy metals in comparison to their bulk counterparts making them a topic of importance to researchers in various fields. Also, various studies have documented specifically tailored nanomaterials that have been synthesized for the removal of heavy metals from various environmental matrices. This review provides up-to-date information on the application of nanotechnology for the remediation of heavy metals. It highlights various nanomaterials that have been employed for the remediation of heavy metals, current details on their methods of synthesis, factors affecting their adsorption processes, and the environmental and health impact of nanomaterials. Finally, it provides the challenges and future trends of nanomaterials for heavy metal removal.

Development of Eggshell-Based Orange Peel Activated Carbon Film for Synergetic Adsorption of Cadmium (II) Ion

Heavy metal contamination has spread around the world, particularly in emerging countries. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of starch/eggshell/orange peel-activated carbon-based composite films in removing cadmium (II) ions from water samples. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the composite films. The effect of Cd²⁺ was studied using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The morphology of the composite film reveals a highly porous and rough surface with more open channels and a non-uniform honeycomb, indicating that the film has a high potential to adsorb Cd²⁺. The diffraction peaks for this film were found to be at 13.74°, 17.45°, 18.4°, and 23.6°, indicating a typical crystalline A-type packing arrangement within the starch granules. The results indicate that crystalline structure was unaffected by the addition of eggshell powder and orange peel-activated carbon. In 0.5 mg L^-1 and 1.0 mg L^-1 Cd²⁺ ions, the composite film removed 100% and 99.7% of the Cd²⁺, respectively, while the maximum removal efficiency for methylene blue was 93.75%. Thus, the current study shows that starch/eggshell/orange peel activated carbon film has a high potential for commercial activated carbon as a low-cost adsorbent.

Leaching Remediation of Dredged Marine Sediments Contaminated with Heavy Metals

There are more than 150 ports in China and a considerable proportion of dredged sediments in ports and waterways are contaminated with heavy metals as the typical contaminants. It is mandatory to remediate the contaminated dredged sediments prior to further resource utilization. The over-arching objective of this study was to use natural organic acids (oxalic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, and malic acid) as leaching agents to remove heavy metals (Cu, Cd, and Pb) from contaminated dredged sediments. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the factors governing the removal rate of heavy metals and leaching kinetics. Citric acid had the best leaching effect on heavy metals Cu, Cd, and Pb with an optimal leaching concentration of 20 mmol/L and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:20. The average removal rates of Cu, Cd, and Pb were 85%, 73%, 56%, and 35% for citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, and oxalic acid, respectively. The leaching kinetics showed that the removal of heavy metals increased rapidly with time and then gradually reached the maximum value which was best described by the Elovich equation model. The outcomes of this study suggest that citric acid is an effective and environmentally friendly leaching agent for removing heavy metals from marine dredged sediments.

Ameliorative effects of plant growth promoting bacteria, zinc oxide nanoparticles and oxalic acid on Luffa acutangula grown on arsenic enriched soil

Arsenic (As) contamination and bioaccumulation are a serious threat to agricultural plants. To address this issue, we checked the efficacy of As tolerant plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and oxalic acid (OA) in Luffa acutangula grown on As rich soil. The selected most As tolerant PGPB i.e Providencia vermicola exhibited plant growth promoting features i.e solubilzation of phosphate, potassium and siderophores production. Innovatively, we observed the synergistic effects of P. vermicola, ZnO NPs (10 ppm) and OA (100 ppm) in L. acutangula grown on As enriched soil (150 ppm). Our treatments both as alone and in combination alleviated As toxicity exhibited by better plant growth and metabolism. Results revealed significantly enhanced photosynthetic pigments, proline, relative water content, total sugars, proteins and indole acetic acid along with As amelioration in L. acutangula. Furthermore, upregulated plant resistance was manifested with marked reduction in the lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage and pronounced antagonism of As and zinc content in leaves under toxic conditions. These treatments also improved level of nutrients, abscisic acid and antioxidants to mitigate As toxicity. This marked improvement in plants' defense mechanism of treated plants under As stress is confirmed by less damaged leaves cell structures observed through the scanning electron micrographs. We also found substantial decrease in the As bioaccumulation in the L. acutangula shoots and roots by 40 and 58% respectively under the co-application of P. vermicola, ZnO NPs and OA in comparison with control. Moreover, the better activity of soil phosphatase and invertase was assessed under the effect of our application. These results cast a new light on the application of P. vermicola, ZnO NPs and OA in both separate and combined form as a feasible and ecofriendly tool to alleviate As stress in L. acutangula.

Biological Synthesis of Nanocatalysts and Their Applications

Over the past few decades, the synthesis and potential applications of nanocatalysts have received great attention from the scientific community. Many well-established methods are extensively utilized for the synthesis of nanocatalysts. However, most conventional physical and chemical methods have some drawbacks, such as the toxicity of precursor materials, the requirement of high-temperature environments, and the high cost of synthesis, which ultimately hinder their fruitful applications in various fields. Bioinspired synthesis is eco-friendly, cost-effective, and requires a low energy/temperature ambient. Various microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae are used as nano-factories and can provide a novel method for the synthesis of different types of nanocatalysts. The synthesized nanocatalysts can be further utilized in various applications such as the removal of heavy metals, treatment of industrial effluents, fabrication of materials with unique properties, biomedical, and biosensors. This review focuses on the biogenic synthesis of nanocatalysts from various green sources that have been adopted in the past two decades, and their potential applications in different areas. This review is expected to provide a valuable guideline for the biogenic synthesis of nanocatalysts and their concomitant applications in various fields.
