Elastocapillary coalescence of plates and pillars

Integrating chemistry, fluid flow, and mechanics to drive spontaneous formation of three-dimensional (3D) patterns in anchored microstructures

Enzymatic reactions in solution drive the convection of confined fluids throughout the enclosing chambers and thereby couple the processes of reaction and convection. In these systems, the energy released from the chemical reactions generates a force, which propels the fluids' spontaneous motion. Here, we use theoretical and computational modeling to determine how reaction-convection can be harnessed to tailor and control the dynamic behavior of soft matter immersed in solution. Our model system encompasses an array of surface-anchored, flexible posts in a millimeter-sized, fluid-filled chamber. Selected posts are coated with enzymes, which react with dissolved chemicals to produce buoyancy-driven fluid flows. We show that these chemically generated flows exert a force on both the coated (active) and passive posts and thus produce regular, self-organized patterns. Due to the specificity of enzymatic reactions, the posts display controllable kaleidoscopic behavior where one regular pattern is smoothly morphed into another with the addition of certain reactants. These spatiotemporal patterns also form "fingerprints" that distinctly characterize the system, reflecting the type of enzymes used, placement of the enzyme-coated posts, height of the chamber, and bending modulus of the elastic posts. The results reveal how reaction-convection provides concepts for designing soft matter that readily switches among multiple morphologies. This behavior enables microfluidic devices to be spontaneously reconfigured for specific applications without construction of new chambers and the fabrication of standalone sensors that operate without extraneous power sources.

Elastocapillary menisci mediate interaction of neighboring structures at the surface of a compliant solid

Surface stress drives long-range elastocapillary interactions at the surface of compliant solids, where it has been observed to mediate interparticle interactions and to alter transport of liquid drops. We show that such an elastocapillary interaction arises between neighboring structures that are simply protrusions of the compliant solid. For compliant micropillars arranged in a square lattice with spacing p less than an interaction distance p^{*}, the distance of a pillar to its neighbors determines how much it deforms due to surface stress: Pillars that are close together tend to be rounder and flatter than those that are far apart. The interaction is mediated by the formation of an elastocapillary meniscus at the base of each pillar, which sets the interaction distance and causes neighboring structures to deform more than those that are relatively isolated. Neighboring pillars also displace toward each other to form clusters, leading to the emergence of pattern formation and ordered domains.

The Rising Aerogel Fibers: Status, Challenges, and Opportunities

Aerogel fibers garner tremendous scientific interest due to their unique properties such as ultrahigh porosity, large specific surface area, and ultralow thermal conductivity, enabling diverse potential applications in textile, environment, energy conversion and storage, and high-tech areas. Here, the fabrication methodologies to construct the aerogel fibers starting from nanoscale building blocks are overviewed, and the spinning thermodynamics and spinning kinetics associated with each technology are revealed. The huge pool of material choices that can be assembled into aerogel fibers is discussed. Furthermore, the fascinating properties of aerogel fibers, including mechanical, thermal, sorptive, optical, and fire-retardant properties are elaborated on. Next, the nano-confining functionalization strategy for aerogel fibers is particularly highlighted, touching upon the driving force for liquid encapsulation, solid-liquid interface adhesion, and interfacial stability. In addition, emerging applications in thermal management, smart wearable fabrics, water harvest, shielding, heat transfer devices, artificial muscles, and information storage, are discussed. Last, the existing challenges in the development of aerogel fibers are pointed out and light is shed on the opportunities in this burgeoning field.

Bioinspired shape shifting of liquid-infused ribbed sheets

The recent emergence of stimuli-responsive, shape-shifting materials offers promising applications in fields as different as soft robotics, aeronautics, or biomedical engineering. Targeted shapes or movements are achieved from the advantageous coupling between some stimulus and various materials such as liquid crystalline elastomers, magnetically responsive soft materials, swelling hydrogels, etc. However, despite the large variety of strategies, they are strongly material dependent and do not offer the possibility to choose between reversible and irreversible transformations. Here, we introduce a strategy applicable to a wide range of materials yielding systematically reversible or irreversible shape transformations of soft ribbed sheets with precise control over the local curvature. Our approach-inspired by the spore-releasing mechanism of the fern sporangium-relies on the capillary deformation of an architected elastic sheet impregnated by an evaporating liquid. We develop an analytical model combining sheet geometry, material stiffness, and capillary forces to rationalize the onset of such deformations and develop a geometric procedure to inverse program target shapes requiring fine control over the curvature gradient. We finally demonstrate the potential irreversibility of the transformation by UV-curing a photosensitive evaporating solution and show that the obtained shells exhibit enhanced mechanical stiffness.

Nanoscale Elastocapillary Effect Induced by Thin-Liquid-Film Instability

Dense arrays of high-aspect-ratio (HAR) vertical nanostructures are essential elements of microelectronic components, photovoltaics, nanoelectromechanical, and energy storage devices. One of the critical challenges in manufacturing the HAR nanostructures is to prevent their capillary-induced aggregation during solution-based nanofabrication processes. Despite the importance of controlling capillary effects, the detailed mechanisms of how a solution interacts with nanostructures are not well understood. Using in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we track the dynamics of nanoscale drying process of HAR silicon (Si) nanopillars in real-time and identify a new mechanism responsible for pattern collapse and nanostructure aggregation. During drying, deflection and aggregation of nanopillars are driven by thin-liquid-film instability, which results in much stronger capillary interactions between the nanopillars than the commonly proposed lateral meniscus interaction forces. The importance of thin-film instability in dewetting has been overlooked in prevalent theories on elastocapillary aggregation. The new dynamic mechanism revealed by in situ visualization is essential for the development of robust nanofabrication processes.

Reversibly Erasable Broadband Omnidirectional Antireflection Coatings Inspired by Inclined Conical Structures on Blue-Tailed Forest Hawk Dragonfly Wings

Blue-tailed forest hawk dragonfly (Orthetrum triangulare) wings, covered with inclined conical structures, are studied for their high transparency and low reflectance for large viewing angles. However, limited by existing technologies, the exquisite inclined structures are not replicated easily or applied adequately. Here, we combine a shear-induced self-assembly approach and a colloidal lithography technology to create omnidirectional antireflection structures that are inspired by dragonfly wings. Nonclose-packed colloid crystals are spin-coated and serve as structural templates in a plasma etching procedure to pattern subwavelength inclined conical structures directly on shape memory polymer-coated substrates. The dependence of the antireflection functionality on the shape and inclination of conical structures is systematically investigated in this research. Compared with a featureless substrate, the structure-covered substrate can display an approximately 8% higher average transmittance in the visible wavelength range at normal incidence and even approximately 23% higher average transmittance as the incident angle increases to 75°. Moreover, the reconfigurable structures composed of shape memory polymers can be repeatedly deformed and recovered as a result of external stimuli at ambient conditions, and the corresponding broadband omnidirectional antireflection functionality is therefore reversibly erased and restored.

Evaporation-Induced Hierarchical Assembly of Rigid Silicon Nanopillars Fabricated by a Scalable Two-Level Colloidal Lithography Approach

Periodic arrays of silicon nanowires/nanopillars are of great technological importance in developing novel electrical, optical, biosensing, and electromechanical devices. Here, we report a novel two-level colloidal lithography technology for making periodic arrays of single-crystalline silicon nanopillars (or nanocolumns) over large areas. Spin-coated monolayer silica colloidal crystals with unusual nonclose-packed structures are utilized as first-level etching masks in generating ordered polymer posts whose sizes can be much smaller than the templating silica microspheres. These polymer posts can then be used as second-level structural templates in fabricating highly ordered silicon nanopillars with broadly tunable geometries by employing metal-assisted chemical etching. As the silicon nanopillars are produced by direct wet etching on the surface of a single-crystalline silicon wafer, they are relatively free of volume defects and thus their bending strength approaches the predicted theoretical maximum. Most importantly, the unique nonclose-packed structure of the original colloidal template and the close-to-ideal mechanical property enables the formation of unusual open-structured hierarchical assemblies of rigid silicon nanopillars during water evaporation. Both experiments and numerical finite-difference time-domain modeling confirm the importance of high aspect ratios of the templated silicon nanopillars in achieving superior broadband antireflection properties. The large fraction of entrapped air in the hierarchically assembled silicon nanopillars further facilitates to accomplish superhydrophobic surface states, promising for developing self-cleaning antireflection coatings for many important optoelectronic applications.

Fluid dynamic instabilities: theory and application to pattern forming in complex media

In this review article, we exemplify the use of stability analysis tools to rationalize pattern formation in complex media. Specifically, we focus on fluid flows, and show how the destabilization of their interface sets the blueprint of the patterns they eventually form. We review the potential use and limitations of the theoretical methods at the end, in terms of their applications to practical settings, e.g. as guidelines to design and fabricate structures while harnessing instabilities.This article is part of the themed issue 'Patterning through instabilities in complex media: theory and applications'.

Segmentation in cohesive systems constrained by elastic environments

The complexity of fracture-induced segmentation in elastically constrained cohesive (fragile) systems originates from the presence of competing interactions. The role of discreteness in such phenomena is of interest in a variety of fields, from hierarchical self-assembly to developmental morphogenesis. In this paper, we study the analytically solvable example of segmentation in a breakable mass-spring chain elastically linked to a deformable lattice structure. We explicitly construct the complete set of local minima of the energy in this prototypical problem and identify among them the states corresponding to the global energy minima. We show that, even in the continuum limit, the dependence of the segmentation topology on the stretching/pre-stress parameter in this problem takes the form of a devil's type staircase. The peculiar nature of this staircase, characterized by locking in rational microstructures, is of particular importance for biological applications, where its structure may serve as an explanation of the robustness of stress-driven segmentation.This article is part of the themed issue 'Patterning through instabilities in complex media: theory and applications.'

New Bioengineering Breakthroughs and Enabling Tools in Regenerative Medicine

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

In this review, we provide a general overview of recent bioengineering breakthroughs and enabling tools that are transforming the field of regenerative medicine (RM). We focus on five key areas that are evolving and increasingly interacting including mechanobiology, biomaterials and scaffolds, intracellular delivery strategies, imaging techniques, and computational and mathematical modeling.

RECENT FINDINGS

Mechanobiology plays an increasingly important role in tissue regeneration and design of therapies. This knowledge is aiding the design of more precise and effective biomaterials and scaffolds. Likewise, this enhanced precision is enabling ways to communicate with and stimulate cells down to their genome. Novel imaging technologies are permitting visualization and monitoring of all these events with increasing resolution from the research stages up to the clinic. Finally, algorithmic mining of data and soft matter physics and engineering are creating growing opportunities to predict biological scenarios, device performance, and therapeutic outcomes.

SUMMARY

We have found that the development of these areas is not only leading to revolutionary technological advances but also enabling a conceptual leap focused on targeting regenerative strategies in a holistic manner. This approach is bringing us ever more closer to the reality of personalized and precise RM.

Laser printing hierarchical structures with the aid of controlled capillary-driven self-assembly

Capillary force is often regarded as detrimental because it may cause undesired distortion or even destruction to micro/nanostructures during a fabrication process, and thus many efforts have been made to eliminate its negative effects. From a different perspective, capillary force can be artfully used to construct specific complex architectures. Here, we propose a laser printing capillary-assisted self-assembly strategy for fabricating regular periodic structures. Microscale pillars are first produced by localized femtosecond laser polymerization and are subsequently assembled into periodic hierarchical architectures with the assistance of controlled capillary forces in an evaporating liquid. Spatial arrangements, pillar heights, and evaporation processes are readily tuned to achieve designable ordered assemblies with various geometries. Reversibility of the assembly is also revealed by breaking the balance between the intermolecular force and the elastic standing force. We further demonstrate the functionality of the hierarchical structures as a nontrivial tool for the selective trapping and releasing of microparticles, opening up a potential for the development of in situ transportation systems for microobjects.
