Coherent nonlinear optical studies of elementary processes in biological complexes: diagrammatic techniques based on the wave function versus the density matrix

Separating single- from multi-particle dynamics in nonlinear spectroscopy

Quantum states depend on the coordinates of all their constituent particles, with essential multi-particle correlations. Time-resolved laser spectroscopy1 is widely used to probe the energies and dynamics of excited particles and quasiparticles such as electrons and holes2,3, excitons4-6, plasmons7, polaritons8 or phonons9. However, nonlinear signals from single- and multiple-particle excitations are all present simultaneously and cannot be disentangled without a priori knowledge of the system4,10. Here, we show that transient absorption-the most commonly used nonlinear spectroscopy-with N prescribed excitation intensities allows separation of the dynamics into N increasingly nonlinear contributions; in systems well-described by discrete excitations, these N contributions systematically report on zero to N excitations. We obtain clean single-particle dynamics even at high excitation intensities and can systematically increase the number of interacting particles, infer their interaction energies and reconstruct their dynamics, which are not measurable via conventional means. We extract single- and multiple-exciton dynamics in squaraine polymers11,12 and, contrary to common assumption6,13, we find that the excitons, on average, meet several times before annihilating. This surprising ability of excitons to survive encounters is important for efficient organic photovoltaics14,15. As we demonstrate on five diverse systems, our procedure is general, independent of the measured system or type of observed (quasi)particle and straightforward to implement. We envision future applicability in the probing of (quasi)particle interactions in such diverse areas as plasmonics7, Auger recombination2 and exciton correlations in quantum dots5,16,17, singlet fission18, exciton interactions in two-dimensional materials19 and in molecules20,21, carrier multiplication22, multiphonon scattering9 or polariton-polariton interaction8.

Detecting electronic coherences by time-domain high-harmonic spectroscopy

Ultrafast spectroscopy is capable of monitoring electronic and vibrational states. For electronic states a few eV apart, an X-ray laser source is required. We propose an alternative method based on the time-domain high-order harmonic spectroscopy where a coherent superposition of the electronic states is first prepared by the strong optical laser pulse. The coherent dynamics can then be probed by the higher-order harmonics generated by the delayed probe pulse. The high nonlinearity typically modeled by the three-step mechanism introduced by Lewenstein and Corkum can serve as a recipe for generation of the coherent excitation with broad bandwidth. The main advantage of the method is that only optical (non-X-ray) lasers are needed. A semiperturbative model based on the Liouville space superoperator approach is developed for the bookkeeping of the different orders of the nonlinear response for the high-order harmonic generation using multiple pulses. Coherence between bound electronic states is monitored in the harmonic spectra from both first- and second-order responses.

Analytical Theory of Attosecond Transient Absorption Spectroscopy of Perturbatively Dressed Systems

A theoretical description of attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy for temporally and spatially overlapping XUV and optical pulses is developed, explaining the signals one can obtain in such an experiment. To this end, we employ a two-stage approach based on perturbation theory, which allows us to give an analytical expression for the transient absorption signal. We focus on the situation in which the attosecond XUV pulse is used to create a coherent superposition of electronic states. As we explain, the resulting dynamics can be detected in the spectrum of the transmitted XUV pulse by manipulating the electronic wave packet using a carrier-envelope-phase-stabilized optical dressing pulse. In addition to coherent electron dynamics triggered by the attosecond pulse, the transmitted XUV spectrum encodes information on electronic states made accessible by the optical dressing pulse. We illustrate these concepts through calculations performed for a few-level model.

Quantum dynamics and spectroscopy of dihalogens in solid matrices. II. Theoretical aspects and G-MCTDH simulations of time-resolved coherent Raman spectra of Schrödinger cat states of the embedded I2Kr18 cluster

This study presents quantum dynamical simulations, using the Gaussian-based multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree (G-MCTDH) method, of time-resolved coherent Raman four-wave-mixing spectroscopic experiments for the iodine molecule embedded in a cryogenic crystal krypton matrix [D. Picconi et al., J. Chem. Phys. 150, 064111 (2019)]. These experiments monitor the time-evolving vibrational coherence between two wave packets created in a quantum superposition (i.e., a "Schrödinger cat state") by a pair of pump pulses which induce electronic B Πu30⁺⟵XΣg+1 transitions. A theoretical description of the spectroscopic measurement is developed, which elucidates the connection between the nonlinear signals and the wave packet coherence. The analysis provides an effective means to simulate the spectra for several different optical conditions with a minimum number of quantum dynamical propagations. The G-MCTDH method is used to calculate and interpret the time-resolved coherent Raman spectra of two selected initial superpositions for a I₂Kr₁₈ cluster embedded in a frozen Kr cage. The time- and frequency-dependent signals carry information about the molecular mechanisms of dissipation and decoherence, which involve vibrational energy transfer to the stretching mode of the four "belt" Kr atoms. The details of these processes and the number of active solvent modes depend in a non-trivial way on the specific initial superposition.

Study of double core hole excitations in molecules by X-ray double-quantum-coherence signals: a multi-configuration simulation

The multi-configurational self-consistent field method is employed to simulate the two-dimensional all-X-ray double-quantum-coherence (XDQC) spectroscopy, a four-wave mixing signal that provides direct signatures of double core hole (DCH) states. The valence electronic structure is probed by capturing the correlation between the single (SCH) and double core hole states. The state-averaged restricted-active-space self-consistent field (SA-RASSCF) approach is used which can treat the valence, SCH, and DCH states at the same theoretical level, and applies to all types of DCHs (located on one or two atoms, K-edge or L-edge), with both accuracy and efficiency. Orbital relaxation introduced by the core hole(s) and the static electron correlation is properly accounted for. The XDQC process can take place via different intermediate DCH state channels by tuning the pulse frequencies. We simulate the XDQC signals for the three isomers of aminophenol at 8 pulse frequency configurations, covering all DCH pathways involving the N1s and O1s core hole (N1sN1s, O1sO1s and N1sO1s), which reveal different patterns of valence excitations.

Monitoring conical intersections in the ring opening of furan by attosecond stimulated X-ray Raman spectroscopy

Attosecond X-ray pulses are short enough to capture snapshots of molecules undergoing nonadiabatic electron and nuclear dynamics at conical intersections (CoIns). We show that a stimulated Raman probe induced by a combination of an attosecond and a femtosecond pulse has a unique temporal and spectral resolution for probing the nonadiabatic dynamics and detecting the ultrafast (∼4.5 fs) passage through a CoIn. This is demonstrated by a multiconfigurational self-consistent-field study of the dynamics and spectroscopy of the furan ring-opening reaction. Trajectories generated by surface hopping simulations were used to predict Attosecond Stimulated X-ray Raman Spectroscopy signals at reactant and product structures as well as representative snapshots along the conical intersection seam. The signals are highly sensitive to the changes in nonadiabatically coupled electronic structure and geometry.

Electronic resonances in broadband stimulated Raman spectroscopy

Spontaneous Raman spectroscopy is a formidable tool to probe molecular vibrations. Under electronic resonance conditions, the cross section can be selectively enhanced enabling structural sensitivity to specific chromophores and reaction centers. The addition of an ultrashort, broadband femtosecond pulse to the excitation field allows for coherent stimulation of diverse molecular vibrations. Within such a scheme, vibrational spectra are engraved onto a highly directional field, and can be heterodyne detected overwhelming fluorescence and other incoherent signals. At variance with spontaneous resonance Raman, however, interpreting the spectral information is not straightforward, due to the manifold of field interactions concurring to the third order nonlinear response. Taking as an example vibrational spectra of heme proteins excited in the Soret band, we introduce a general approach to extract the stimulated Raman excitation profiles from complex spectral lineshapes. Specifically, by a quantum treatment of the matter through density matrix description of the third order nonlinear polarization, we identify the contributions which generate the Raman bands, by taking into account for the cross section of each process.

On the Resolution Limit of Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy: Modelling Fifth-Order Signals with Overlapping Pulses

Femtosecond stimulated Raman scattering (FSRS) spectroscopy is a powerful pump-probe technique that can track electronic and vibrational dynamics with high spectral and temporal resolution. The investigation of extremely short-lived species, however, implies deciphering complex signals and is ultimately hampered by unwanted nonlinear effects once the time resolution limit is approached and the pulses overlap temporally. Using the loop diagrams formalism we calculate the fifth-order response of a model system and address the limiting case where the relevant dynamics timescale is comparable to the pump-pulse duration and, consequently, the pump and the probe overlap temporally. We find that in this regime, additional diagrams that do not contribute for temporally well separated pulses need to be taken into account, giving rise to new time-dependent features, even in the absence of photoinduced dynamics and for negative delays.

Multidimensional x-ray spectroscopy of valence and core excitations in cysteine

Several nonlinear spectroscopy experiments which employ broadband x-ray pulses to probe the coupling between localized core and delocalized valence excitation are simulated for the amino acid cysteine at the K-edges of oxygen and nitrogen and the K- and L-edges of sulfur. We focus on two-dimensional (2D) and 3D signals generated by two- and three-pulse stimulated x-ray Raman spectroscopy (SXRS) with frequency-dispersed probe. We show how the four-pulse x-ray signals [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] can give new 3D insight into the SXRS signals. The coupling between valence- and core-excited states can be visualized in three-dimensional plots, revealing the origin of the polarizability that controls the simpler pump-probe SXRS signals.

Time-, frequency-, and wavevector-resolved x-ray diffraction from single molecules

Using a quantum electrodynamic framework, we calculate the off-resonant scattering of a broadband X-ray pulse from a sample initially prepared in an arbitrary superposition of electronic states. The signal consists of single-particle (incoherent) and two-particle (coherent) contributions that carry different particle form factors that involve different material transitions. Single-molecule experiments involving incoherent scattering are more influenced by inelastic processes compared to bulk measurements. The conditions under which the technique directly measures charge densities (and can be considered as diffraction) as opposed to correlation functions of the charge-density are specified. The results are illustrated with time- and wavevector-resolved signals from a single amino acid molecule (cysteine) following an impulsive excitation by a stimulated X-ray Raman process resonant with the sulfur K-edge. Our theory and simulations can guide future experimental studies on the structures of nano-particles and proteins.

Probing electronic and vibrational dynamics in molecules by time-resolved photoelectron, Auger-electron, and X-ray photon scattering spectroscopy

We present a unified description for time-resolved electron and photon scattering spectroscopies from molecules prepared in nonstationary states. Signals are expressed in terms of superoperator Green's functions and a systematic procedure for treating various degrees of freedom consistently at different levels of theory is developed. The standard Fermi Golden Rule expressions for photoelectron spectra, which are limited to broad, slowly-varying signals, are obtained as a limiting case of our more general theory that applies to broader parameter regimes.

Two-dimensional stimulated resonance Raman spectroscopy study of the Trp-cage peptide folding

We report a combined molecular dynamics (MD) and ab initio simulation study of the ultrafast broadband ultraviolet (UV) stimulated resonance Raman (SRR) spectra of the Trp-cage mini protein. Characteristic two dimensional (2D) SRR features of various folding states are identified. Structural fluctuations erode the cross peaks and the correlation between diagonal peaks is a good indicator of the α-helix formation.

Double-core excitations in formamide can be probed by X-ray double-quantum-coherence spectroscopy

The attosecond, time-resolved X-ray double-quantum-coherence four-wave mixing signals of formamide at the nitrogen and oxygen K-edges are simulated using restricted excitation window time-dependent density functional theory and the excited core hole approximation. These signals, induced by core exciton coupling, are particularly sensitive to the level of treatment of electron correlation, thus providing direct experimental signatures of electron and core-hole many-body effects and a test of electronic structure theories.

We report an ab-initio simulation study of the ultrafast broad bandwidth ultraviolet (UV) stimulated resonance Raman spectra (SRRS) of L-tyrosine, L-tryptophan and trans-L-tryptophan-L-tyrosine (WY) dipeptide. Two-pulse one-dimensional (1D) SRRS and three-pulse 2D SRRS that reveal inter- and intra-residue vibrational coorelations are simulated using electronically resonant or preresonant pulse configurations that select the Raman signal and discriminate against excited state pathways. Multimode effects are incorporated via the cumulant expansion. The 2D SRRS technique is more sensitive to residue couplings than spontaneous Raman.

Multidimensional attosecond resonant X-ray spectroscopy of molecules: lessons from the optical regime

New free-electron laser and high-harmonic generation X-ray light sources are capable of supplying pulses short and intense enough to perform resonant nonlinear time-resolved experiments in molecules. Valence-electron motions can be triggered impulsively by core excitations and monitored with high temporal and spatial resolution. We discuss possible experiments that employ attosecond X-ray pulses to probe the quantum coherence and correlations of valence electrons and holes, rather than the charge density alone, building on the analogy with existing studies of vibrational motions using femtosecond techniques in the visible regime.

Two-dimensional stimulated resonance Raman spectroscopy of molecules with broadband x-ray pulses

Expressions for the two-dimensional stimulated x-ray Raman spectroscopy (2D-SXRS) signal obtained using attosecond x-ray pulses are derived. The 1D- and 2D-SXRS signals are calculated for trans-N-methyl acetamide (NMA) with broad bandwidth (181 as, 14.2 eV FWHM) pulses tuned to the oxygen and nitrogen K-edges. Crosspeaks in 2D signals reveal electronic Franck-Condon overlaps between valence orbitals and relaxed orbitals in the presence of the core-hole.
