Vegetation controls on channel network complexity in coastal wetlands

Channel networks are key to coastal wetland functioning and resilience under climate change. Vegetation affects sediment and hydrodynamics in many different ways, which calls for a coherent framework to explain how vegetation shapes channel network geometry and functioning. Here, we introduce an idealized model that shows how coastal wetland vegetation creates more complexly branching networks by increasing the ratio of channel incision versus topographic diffusion rates, thereby amplifying the channelization feedback that recursively incises finer-scale side-channels. This complexification trend qualitatively agrees with and provides an explanation for field data presented here as well as in earlier studies. Moreover, our model demonstrates that a stronger biogeomorphic feedback leads to higher and more densely vegetated marsh platforms and more extensive drainage networks. These findings may inspire future field research by raising the hypothesis that vegetation-induced self-organization enhances the storm surge buffering capacity of coastal wetlands and their resilience under sea-level rise.

Physical interactions in non-ideal fluids promote Turing patterns

Turing's mechanism is often invoked to explain periodic patterns in nature, although direct experimental support is scarce. Turing patterns form in reaction-diffusion systems when the activating species diffuse much slower than the inhibiting species, and the involved reactions are highly nonlinear. Such reactions can originate from cooperativity, whose physical interactions should also affect diffusion. We here take direct interactions into account and show that they strongly affect Turing patterns. We find that weak repulsion between the activator and inhibitor can substantially lower the required differential diffusivity and reaction nonlinearity. By contrast, strong interactions can induce phase separation, but the resulting length scale is still typically governed by the fundamental reaction-diffusion length scale. Taken together, our theory connects traditional Turing patterns with chemically active phase separation, thus describing a wider range of systems. Moreover, we demonstrate that even weak interactions affect patterns substantially, so they should be incorporated when modelling realistic systems.

Scaling Law for Cracking in Shrinkable Granular Packings

Hydrated granular packings often crack into discrete clusters of grains when dried. Despite its ubiquity, an accurate prediction of cracking remains elusive. Here, we elucidate the previously overlooked role of individual grain shrinkage-a feature common to many materials-in determining crack patterning using both experiments and simulations. By extending classical Griffith crack theory, we obtain a scaling law that quantifies how cluster size depends on the interplay between grain shrinkage, stiffness, and size-applicable to a diverse array of shrinkable granular packings.

Universal scaling of polygonal desiccation crack patterns

Polygonal desiccation crack patterns are commonly observed in natural systems. Despite their quotidian nature, it is unclear whether similar crack patterns which span orders of magnitude in length scales share the same underlying physics. In thin films, the characteristic length of polygonal cracks is known to monotonically increase with the film thickness; however, existing theories that consider the mechanical, thermodynamic, hydrodynamic, and statistical properties of cracking often lead to contradictory predictions. Here we experimentally investigate polygonal cracks in drying suspensions of micron-sized particles by varying film thickness, boundary adhesion, packing fraction, and solvent. Although polygonal cracks were observed in most systems above a critical film thickness, in cornstarch-water mixtures, multiscale crack patterns were observed due to two distinct desiccation mechanisms. Large-scale, primary polygons initially form due to capillary-induced film shrinkage, whereas small-scale, secondary polygons appear later due to the deswelling of the hygroscopic particles. In addition, we find that the characteristic area of the polygonal cracks, A_{p}, obeys a universal power law, A_{p}=αh^{4/3}, where h is the film thickness. By quantitatively linking α with the material properties during crack formation, we provide a robust framework for understanding multiscale polygonal crack patterns from microscopic to geologic scales.
