Physical Chemistry Models for Chemical Research in the XXth and XXIst Centuries

Thermodynamic hypotheses and models are the touchstone for chemical results, but the actual models based on time-invariance, which have performed efficiently in the development of chemistry, are nowadays invalid for the interpretation of the behavior of complex systems exhibiting nonlinear kinetics and with matter and energy exchange flows with the surroundings. Such fields of research will necessarily foment and drive the use of thermodynamic models based on the description of irreversibility at the macroscopic level, instead of the current models which are strongly anchored in microreversibility.

Anti-aligning interaction between active particles induces a finite wavelength instability: The dancing hexagons

By considering a simple model for self-propelled particle interaction, we show that anti-aligning forces induce a finite wavelength instability. Consequently, the system exhibits pattern formation. The formed pattern involves, let us say, a choreographic movement of the active entities. At the level of particle density, the system oscillates between a stripe pattern and a hexagonal one. The underlying dynamics of these density oscillations consists of two counterpropagating and purely hexagonal traveling waves. They are assembling and disassembling a global hexagonal structure and a striped lineup of particles. This self-assembling process becomes quite erratic for long-time simulations, seeming aperiodic.

[Molecular and cellular mechanisms of ageing: modern knowledge (literature review)]

Ageing (as known as eldering, senescence) is a genetically and epigenetically programmed pathophysiological process. Velocity of biological ageing is defined as balance between alteration and reparation of body structures. According to last World Health Organization (WHO) highlights ageing still stays an extremely actual scientific, social and demographic problem: in 2020 total number of people older than 60 years and older was 1 billion people; in 2030 future number may be 1,4 billion people, in 2050 - 2,1 billion people. Absence of single universal theory of aging nowadays is reason for scientifical and clinical collaboration between biologists and doctors, including endocrinologists. Designing of potentially effective newest anti-ageing strategies (such as natural/synthetic telomerase regulators, mesenchymal stem cells etc.) is of interest to scientific community. The aim of present article is a review of modern omics (genomic, proteomic, metabolomic) ageing mechanisms, potential ways of targeted prevention and treatment of age-related disease according to conception of personalized medicine. Present review is narrative, it does not lead to systematic review, meta-analysis and does not aim to commercial advertisement. Review has been provided via PubMed article that have been published since 1979 until 2022.

Nonideal Reaction-Diffusion Systems: Multiple Routes to Instability

We develop a general classification of the nature of the instabilities yielding spatial organization in open nonideal reaction-diffusion systems, based on linear stability analysis. This encompasses dynamics where chemical species diffuse, interact with each other, and undergo chemical reactions driven out of equilibrium by external chemostats. We find analytically that these instabilities can be of two types: instabilities caused by intermolecular energetic interactions (E type), and instabilities caused by multimolecular out-of-equilibrium chemical reactions (R type). Furthermore, we identify a class of chemical reaction networks, containing unimolecular networks but also extending beyond them, that can only undergo E-type instabilities. We illustrate our analytical findings with numerical simulations on two reaction-diffusion models, each displaying one of the two types of instability and generating stable patterns.

A controversy about chance and the origins of life: thermodynamicist Ilya Prigogine replies to molecular biologist Jacques Monod

The ancient, interlinked questions about the role of chance in the living world and the origins of life, gained new relevance with the development of molecular biology in the twentieth century. In 1970, French molecular biologist Jacques Monod, joint winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, devoted a popular book on modern biology and its philosophical implications to these questions, which was quickly translated into English as Chance and Necessity. Nine years later, Belgian thermodynamicist Ilya Prigogine, 1977 winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, published a popular book on the history and philosophy of natural sciences with Belgian philosopher Isabelle Stengers. Translated into English under the title Order out of Chaos and widely discussed, the whole book can be seen as a response to Monod on these biological and philosophical questions. This study will trace this intellectual controversy between two Nobel Prize winners defending two opposing scientific and philosophical visions of the living world, rooted in two different scientific disciplines.

On the Direction of Time: From Reichenbach to Prigogine and Penrose

The question why natural processes tend to flow along a preferred direction has always been considered from within the perspective of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, especially its statistical formulation due to Maxwell and Boltzmann. In this article, we re-examine the subject from the perspective of a new historico-philosophical formulation based on the careful use of selected theoretical elements taken from three key modern thinkers: Hans Reichenbach, Ilya Prigogine, and Roger Penrose, who are seldom considered together in the literature. We emphasize in our analysis how the entropy concept was introduced in response to the desire to extend the applicability of the Second Law to the cosmos at large (Reichenbach and Penrose), and to examine whether intrinsic irreversibility is a fundamental universal characteristics of nature (Prigogine). While the three thinkers operate with vastly different technical proposals and belong to quite distinct intellectual backgrounds, some similarities are detected in their thinking. We philosophically examine these similarities but also bring into focus the uniqueness of each approach. Our purpose is not providing an exhaustive derivations of logical concepts identified in one thinker in terms of ideas found in the others. Instead, the main objective of this work is to stimulate historico-philosophical investigations and inquiries into the problem of the direction of time in nature by way of crossdisciplinary examinations of previous theories commonly treated in literature as disparate domains.

Observation and modelling of vegetation spirals and arcs in isotropic environmental conditions: dissipative structures in arid landscapes

We report for the first time on the formation of spirals like vegetation patterns in isotropic and uniform environmental conditions. The vegetation spirals are not waves and they do not rotate. They belong to the class of dissipative structures found out of equilibrium. Isolated or interacting spirals and arcs observed in South America (Bolivia) and North Africa (Morocco) are interpreted as a result of curvature instability that affects the circular shape of localized patches. The biomass exhibits a dynamical behaviour with arcs that transform into spirals. Interpretation of observations and of the predictions provided by the theory is illustrated by recent measurements of peculiar plant morphology (the alfa plant, or Stipa tenacissima L.) originated from northwestern Africa and the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula.This article is part of the theme issue 'Dissipative structures in matter out of equilibrium: from chemistry, photonics and biology (part 2)'.
