Resynthesizing behavior through phylogenetic refinement

This article proposes that biologically plausible theories of behavior can be constructed by following a method of "phylogenetic refinement," whereby they are progressively elaborated from simple to complex according to phylogenetic data on the sequence of changes that occurred over the course of evolution. It is argued that sufficient data exist to make this approach possible, and that the result can more effectively delineate the true biological categories of neurophysiological mechanisms than do approaches based on definitions of putative functions inherited from psychological traditions. As an example, the approach is used to sketch a theoretical framework of how basic feedback control of interaction with the world was elaborated during vertebrate evolution, to give rise to the functional architecture of the mammalian brain. The results provide a conceptual taxonomy of mechanisms that naturally map to neurophysiological and neuroanatomical data and that offer a context for defining putative functions that, it is argued, are better grounded in biology than are some of the traditional concepts of cognitive science.

Phylostratigraphic profiles reveal a deep evolutionary history of the vertebrate head sensory systems

Background

The vertebrate head is a highly derived trait with a heavy concentration of sophisticated sensory organs that allow complex behaviour in this lineage. The head sensory structures arise during vertebrate development from cranial placodes and the neural crest. It is generally thought that derivatives of these ectodermal embryonic tissues played a central role in the evolutionary transition at the onset of vertebrates. Despite the obvious importance of head sensory organs for vertebrate biology, their evolutionary history is still uncertain.

Results

To give a fresh perspective on the adaptive history of the vertebrate head sensory organs, we applied genomic phylostratigraphy to large-scale in situ expression data of the developing zebrafish Danio rerio. Contrary to traditional predictions, we found that dominant adaptive signals in the analyzed sensory structures largely precede the evolutionary advent of vertebrates. The leading adaptive signals at the bilaterian-chordate transition suggested that the visual system was the first sensory structure to evolve. The olfactory, vestibuloauditory, and lateral line sensory organs displayed a strong link with the urochordate-vertebrate ancestor. The only structures that qualified as genuine vertebrate innovations were the neural crest derivatives, trigeminal ganglion and adenohypophysis. We also found evidence that the cranial placodes evolved before the neural crest despite their proposed embryological relatedness.

Conclusions

Taken together, our findings reveal pre-vertebrate roots and a stepwise adaptive history of the vertebrate sensory systems. This study also underscores that large genomic and expression datasets are rich sources of macroevolutionary information that can be recovered by phylostratigraphic mining.

Key steps in the morphogenesis of a cranial placode in an invertebrate chordate, the tunicate Ciona savignyi

Tunicates and vertebrates share a common ancestor that possessed cranial neurogenic placodes, thickenings in embryonic head epidermis giving rise to sensory structures. Though orthology assignments between vertebrate and tunicate placodes are not entirely resolved, vertebrate otic placodes and tunicate atrial siphon primordia are thought to be homologous based on morphology and position, gene expression, and a common signaling requirement during induction. Here, we probe key points in the morphogenesis of the tunicate atrial siphon. We show that the siphon primordium arises within a non-dividing field of lateral-dorsal epidermis. The initial steps of atrial primordium invagination are similar to otic placode invagination, but a placode-derived vesicle is never observed as for the otic vesicle of vertebrates. Rather, confocal imaging reveals an atrial opening through juvenile stages and beyond. We inject a photoactivatable lineage tracer to show that the early atrial siphon of the metamorphic juvenile, including its aperture and lining, derives from cells of the atrial placode itself. Finally, we perturb the routing of the gut to the left atrium by laser ablation and pharmacology to show that this adaptation to a sessile lifestyle depends on left-right patterning mechanisms present in the free-swimming chordate ancestor.

The serial transformation hypothesis of vertebrate origins: comment on "The new head hypothesis revisited"

In "The New Head Hypothesis Revisited," R.G. Northcutt (2005. J Exp Zool (Mol Dev Evol) 304B:274-297) evaluates the original postulates of this hypothesis (Northcutt and Gans, 1983. Quart Rev Biol 58:1-28). One of these postulates is that the brain-particularly the forebrain-evolved at essentially the same time as many neural crest and neurogenic placode derivatives-including sensory ganglia, dermal skeleton and sensory capsules of the head, and branchial arches. Northcutt's subsequent paper in 1996 concluded with the idea that transitional forms might not have occurred at the origin of vertebrates. Butler proposed a "Serial Transformation" hypothesis in 2000, which disputed the latter idea in that paired eyes and an enlarged brain (but lacking telencephalon) were envisioned to have been gained before elaboration of most neural crest and neurogenic placodal derivatives. In 2003, J. Mallatt and J.-Y. Chen analyzed fossils of the Cambrian animal Haikouella, which strongly support its affinity to craniates and aspects of several hypotheses, including Butler's transformational model, because although branchial bars are present, most other neural crest and placodal derivatives are absent, while paired eyes and an enlarged brain (but probably without telencephalon) are present. A more complete picture of vertebrate origins can be realized when the various hypotheses are constructively reconciled.

Early development of amphioxus nervous system with special reference to segmental cell organization and putative sensory cell precursors: a study based on the expression of pan-neuronal marker gene Hu/elav

The development of the nervous system of amphioxus was investigated at the cellular level based on the expression of the pan-neuronal marker gene Hu/elav. In situ hybridization analysis showed that an amphioxus Hu/elav homolog (AmphiHu/Hel) was expressed in individual cells within the neural plate, but the cells exhibited no obvious arrangements in early embryos without distinct somites. However, in neurulae with somites, AmphiHu/Hel-positive cells were clustered along the D-V axis in close register with the boundaries of somites, resulting in reiterated cell arrangements that became evident along the neuraxis. Furthermore, AmphiHu/Hel-positive cell clusters appeared one by one along with the development of underlying somites. Double-staining in situ hybridization analysis with the islet gene revealed that the cell clusters contain presumptive motoneurons. In addition, AmphiHu/Hel expression was also observed outside the CNS, probably in the epithelial ectoderm, suggesting that amphioxus has a large number of putative sensory cell precursors as early as the early neurula stage. Taking recent gene expression studies and anatomical studies into consideration, we discuss ontogenetic and phylogenetic features of the amphioxus nervous system.

Origin of the vertebrate inner ear: evolution and induction of the otic placode

The vertebrate inner ear forms a highly complex sensory structure responsible for the detection of sound and balance. Some new aspects on the evolutionary and developmental origin of the inner ear are summarised here. Recent molecular data have challenged the longstanding view that special sense organs such as the inner ear have evolved with the appearance of vertebrates. In addition, it has remained unclear whether the ear originally arose through a modification of the amphibian mechanosensory lateral line system or whether both evolved independently. A comparison of the developmental mechanisms giving rise to both sensory systems in different species should help to clarify some of these controversies. During embryonic development, the inner ear arises from a simple epithelium adjacent to the hindbrain, the otic placode, that is specified through inductive interactions with surrounding tissues. This review summarises the embryological evidence showing that the induction of the otic placode is a multistep process which requires sequential interaction of different tissues with the future otic ectoderm and the recent progress that has been made to identify some of the molecular players involved. Finally, the hypothesis is discussed that induction of all sensory placodes initially shares a common molecular pathway, which may have been responsible to generate an 'ancestral placode' during evolution.
