Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus carriage is a risk factor for invasive infections. Unique genetic elements favoring the transition from colonizing to invasive phenotype have not yet been identified, and phenotypic adaptation traits are understudied. We therefore assessed phenotypic and genotypic profiles of 11 S. aureus isolate pairs sampled from colonized patients simultaneously suffering from invasive S. aureus infections. Ten out of 11 isolate pairs displayed the same spa and multilocus sequence type, suggesting colonization as an origin for the invasive infection. Systematic analysis of colonizing and invasive isolate pairs showed similar adherence, hemolysis, reproductive fitness properties, antibiotic tolerance, and virulence in a Galleria mellonella infection model, as well as minimal genetic differences. Our results provide insights into the similar phenotypes associated with limited adaptation between colonizing and invasive isolates. Disruption of the physical barriers of mucosa or skin was identified in the majority of patients, further emphasizing colonization as a major risk factor for invasive disease. IMPORTANCE S. aureus is a major pathogen of humans, causing a wide range of diseases. The difficulty to develop a vaccine and antibiotic treatment failure warrant the exploration of novel treatment strategies. Asymptomatic colonization of the human nasal passages is a major risk factor for invasive disease, and decolonization procedures have been effective in preventing invasive infections. However, the transition of S. aureus from a benign colonizer of the nasal passages to a major pathogen is not well understood, and both host and bacterial properties have been discussed as being relevant for this behavioral change. We conducted a thorough investigation of patient-derived strain pairs reflecting colonizing and invasive isolates in a given patient. Although we identified limited genetic adaptation in certain strains, as well as slight differences in adherence capacity among colonizing and invasive isolates, our work suggests that barrier breaches are a key event in the disease continuum of S. aureus.

Abstract
For an overview on the occurrence of Giardia assemblages in children in Eastern Slovakia, we examined 259 faecal samples of children from the segregated settlement in Medzev, 30 samples of children from the orphanage in Medzev and 40 samples of children with autism from the Special Elementary School in Košice. Thirty-eight samples (14.67 %) from the segregated settlement, 19 samples (63.33 %) from the orphanage and two samples (5.0 %) from the Special Elementary School were positive for Giardia by flotation. The initial microscopic diagnostics were completed by the genotyping of the triosephosphate isomerase-gene loci (tpi genes) which revealed the existence of two Giardia assemblages in Slovak population, namely Giardia duodenalis (assemblage A) and Giardia enterica (assemblage B). These results represent the first evidence of A and B assemblages in children in Slovakia. Epidemiological significance and the impact on the public health of Giardia infection are highlighted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Canada, surveys of enteric parasites in dogs and cats have been reported sporadically over the past 40 years, mostly focusing on a specific region. The present work was performed to determine the current prevalence of various parasites in fecal samples from shelter dogs and cats across the Canadian provinces. METHODS A total of 1086 dog and 636 cat fecal samples from 26 shelters were analysed using a sugar solution double centrifugal flotation technique. Prevalences (national, regional, provincial, age and parasite-specific), were calculated and compared using the Fisher-Exact test. A multiplex PCR was performed to distinguish Taenia spp, Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis on samples positive for taeniid eggs. RESULTS Overall, 33.9% of dogs and 31.8% of cats were positive for at least one parasite. Toxocara canis and T. cati were the most prevalent parasite present in fecal samples followed by Cystoisospora spp. Prevalence in dogs was similar across the Atlantic, East, West and Pacific regions, while prevalence in cats varied regionally. Eggs of E. granulosus/E. canadensis were detected in samples from dogs from BC, AB, and ON. CONCLUSIONS Data from this study will help in the development of strategies, based on the level of risk per geographic location for the prevention and response to these parasites in pets and free-roaming and shelter animals in Canada.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus tiene gran capacidad para colonizar la piel y las mucosas de los seres humanos y de diferentes animales. Varios estudios evidencian el papel de dicha colonización en la patogénesis y la epidemiología de las infecciones causadas por S. aureus. Se ha demostrado que los portadores nasales constituyen una fuente importante de propagación de la bacteria; una amplia proporción de las infecciones estafilocócicas invasivas asociadas al cuidado de la salud son de origen endógeno, y la colonización por cepas de S. aureus resistentes a meticilina (SARM), aún mal entendida, origina mayores complicaciones. La importancia de la colonización se ha definido con más profundidad en ambientes hospitalarios, pero recientemente se han hecho estudios en la comunidad con resultados contradictorios sobre la relación colonización-infección. En esta revisión se presentan algunas características relevantes del proceso de colonización por S. aureus, incluyendo las cepas de SARM, y se consideran los factores humanos y del microorganismo que influyen en él. Asimismo, se hace una revisión de los estudios colombianos al respecto.
