Viscoelastic relaxation and topological fluctuations in glass-forming liquids

A method for characterizing the topological fluctuations in liquids is proposed. This approach exploits the concept of the weighted gyration tensor of a collection of particles and permits the definition of a local configurational unit (LCU). The first principal axis of the gyration tensor serves as the director of the LCU, which can be tracked and analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations. Analysis of moderately supercooled Kob-Andersen mixtures suggests that orientational relaxation of the LCU closely follows viscoelastic relaxation and exhibits a two-stage behavior. The slow relaxing component of the LCU corresponds to the structural, Maxwellian mechanical relaxation. Additionally, it is found that the mean curvature of the LCUs is approximately zero at the Maxwell relaxation time with the Gaussian curvature being negative. This observation implies that structural relaxation occurs when the configurationally stable and destabilized regions interpenetrate each other in a bicontinuous manner. Finally, the mean and Gaussian curvatures of the LCUs can serve as reduced variables for the shear stress correlation, providing a compelling proof of the close connection between viscoelastic relaxation and topological fluctuations in glass-forming liquids.

Mesoscopic two-point collective dynamics of glass-forming liquids

The collective density-density and hydrostatic pressure-pressure correlations of glass-forming liquids are spatiotemporally mapped out using molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that the sharp rise of structural relaxation time below the Arrhenius temperature coincides with the emergence of slow, nonhydrodynamic collective dynamics on mesoscopic scales. The observed long-range, nonhydrodynamic mode is independent of wave numbers and closely coupled to the local structural dynamics. Below the Arrhenius temperature, it dominates the slow collective dynamics on length scales immediately beyond the first structural peak in contrast to the well-known behavior at high temperatures. These results highlight a key connection between the qualitative change in mesoscopic two-point collective dynamics and the dynamic crossover phenomenon.

Liquid Structures and Diffusion Dynamics of Alkyl-Pyrene Liquids Studied by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Functional molecular liquids (FMLs) based on alkylated π-conjugated molecules have attracted attention as solvent-free and nonvolatile liquid materials with prominent optoelectronic features. Recently, novel FML compounds containing pyrene as the functional core were synthesized, and their rheological and photochemical properties were investigated. Although the molecules differ only in the number of alkyl chain substituents and their substitution positions, their viscosity coefficients are largely different beyond the Stokes-Einstein relation on the assumption of identical microscopic friction, indicating that local microscopic molecular interactions are crucial for the macroscopic rheological properties. Here, we report a theoretical study on the rheological properties of the alkyl-pyrene liquids by means of atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We performed long-time MD simulations for tens of microseconds to obtain ample statistical samples of the alkyl-pyrene liquids and analyzed their liquid structures and diffusion dynamics based on spatiotemporal correlation functions. We found the formation of characteristic local liquid structures of π-π stacking of the pyrene moieties and locally anisotropic and anomalous diffusion dynamics, which remarkably vary depending on the alkyl substituent patterns. The present results provide an atomistic insight into the macroscopic rheological properties of alkyl-π FMLs and molecular design strategy for them.

Real-Space Local Dynamics of Molten Inorganic Salts Using Van Hove Correlation Function

Molten inorganic salts are attracting resurgent attention because of their unique physicochemical properties, making them promising media for next-generation concentrating solar power systems and molten salt reactors. The dynamics of these highly disordered ionic media is largely studied by theoretical simulations, while the robust experimental techniques capable of observing local dynamics are not well-developed. To provide fundamental insights into the atomic-scale transport properties of molten salts, we report the real-space dynamics of molten magnesium chloride at high temperatures employing the Van Hove correlation function obtained by inelastic neutron scattering. Our results directly depict the distance-dependent dynamics of a molten salt on the picosecond time scale. This study demonstrates the capability of the developed approach to describe the locally correlated- and self-dynamics in molten salts, significantly improving our understanding of the interplay between microscopic structural parameters and their dynamics that ultimately control physical properties of condensed matter in extreme environments.

Surface diffusion within the Caldeira-Leggett formalism

Surface diffusion is described in terms of the intermediate scattering function in the time domain and reciprocal space. Two extreme time regimes are analyzed, ballistic (very short times) and Brownian or diffusive (very long times). This open dynamics is studied from the master equation for the reduced density matrix within the Caldeira-Leggett formalism. Several characteristic magnitudes in this decoherence process such as the coherence length, ensemble width and purity of the density matrix are analyzed. Furthermore, for flat surfaces, the surface diffusion is considered for the Schrödinger cat states and identical adsorbates or adparticles, bosons and fermions. The analytical results are compared with those issued from solving the Lindblad master equation through the stochastic wave function method. This numerical analysis is extended to be applied to corrugated surfaces.

Generation of thermal scattering files with the CINEL code

The CINEL code dedicated to generate the thermal neutron scattering files in ENDF-6 format for solid crystalline, free gas materials and liquid water is presented. Compared to the LEAPR module of the NJOY code, CINEL is able to calculate the coherent and incoherent elastic scattering cross sections for any solid crystalline materials. Specific material properties such as anharmonicity and texture can be taken into account in CINEL. The calculation of the thermal scattering laws can be accelerated by using graphics processing unit (GPU), which enables to remove the short collision time approximation for large values of momentum transfer. CINEL is able to generate automatically the grids of dimensionless momentum and energy transfers. The Sampling the Velocity of the Target nucleus (SVT) algorithm capable of determining the scattered neutron distributions is implemented in CINEL. The obtained distributions for free target nuclei such as hydrogen and oxygen are in good agreement with analytical results and Monte-Carlo simulations when incident neutron energies are above a few eV. The introduction of the effective temperature and the rejection step to the SVT algorithm shows improvements to the neutron up-scattering treatment of hydrogen bound in liquid water.

Revisiting the single-saddle model for the β-relaxation of supercooled liquids

The dynamics of glass-forming liquids display several outstanding features, such as two-step relaxation and dynamic heterogeneities, which are difficult to predict quantitatively from first principles. In this work, we revisit a simple theoretical model of the β-relaxation, i.e., the first step of the relaxation dynamics. The model, first introduced by Cavagna et al. [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 36, 10721 (2003)], describes the dynamics of the system in the neighborhood of a saddle point of the potential energy surface. We extend the model to account for density–density correlation functions and for the four-point dynamic susceptibility. We obtain analytical results for a simple schematic model, making contact with related results for p-spin models and with the predictions of inhomogeneous mode-coupling theory. Building on recent computational advances, we also explicitly compare the model predictions against overdamped Langevin dynamics simulations of a glass-forming liquid close to the mode-coupling crossover. The agreement is quantitative at the level of single-particle dynamic properties only up to the early β-regime. Due to its inherent harmonic approximation, however, the model is unable to predict the dynamics on the time scale relevant for structural relaxation. Nonetheless, our analysis suggests that the agreement with the simulations may be largely improved if the modes’ spatial localization is properly taken into account.

Medium-range atomic correlation in simple liquids. I. Distinction from short-range order

Physical properties of liquids and glasses are controlled not only by the short-range order (SRO) in the nearest-neighbor atoms but also by the medium-range order (MRO) observed for atoms beyond the nearest neighbors. In this article the nature of the MRO as the descriptor of point-to-set atomic correlation is discussed focusing on simple liquids, such as metallic liquids. Through the results of x-ray diffraction and simulation with classical potentials we show that the third peak of the pair-distribution function, which describes the MRO, shows a distinct change in temperature dependence at the glass transition, whereas the first peak, which represents the SRO, changes smoothly through the glass transition. The result suggests that the glass transition is induced by the freezing of the MRO rather than that of the SRO, implying a major role of the MRO on the viscosity of supercooled liquid.

Spatial correlations of entangled polymer dynamics

The spatial correlations of entangled polymer dynamics are examined by molecular dynamics simulations and neutron spin-echo spectroscopy. Due to the soft nature of topological constraints, the initial spatial decays of intermediate scattering functions of entangled chains are, to the first approximation, surprisingly similar to those of an unentangled system in the functional forms. However, entanglements reveal themselves as a long tail in the reciprocal-space correlations, implying a weak but persistent dynamic localization in real space. Comparison with a number of existing theoretical models of entangled polymers suggests that they cannot fully describe the spatial correlations revealed by simulations and experiments. In particular, the strict one-dimensional diffusion idea of the original tube model is shown to be flawed. The dynamic spatial correlation analysis demonstrated in this work provides a useful tool for interrogating the dynamics of entangled polymers. Lastly, the failure of the investigated models to even qualitatively predict the spatial correlations of collective single-chain density fluctuations points to a possible critical role of incompressibility in polymer melt dynamics.

Investigations of structural and dynamical mechanisms of ice formation regulated by graphene oxide nanosheets

Recent research indicates that graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets can be used to regulate ice formation by controlling critical ice nucleus growth in water at supercooling temperatures. In addition, the study of ice formation mechanisms regulated by GO nanosheets, a good model system for antifreeze proteins (AFPs), will shed light on how AFPs regulate ice formation in nature. In this work, time-resolved small-angle x-ray scattering (TR-SAXS) and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments were carried out to investigate the structural and dynamical mechanisms of ice formation regulated by GO nanosheets. Strikingly, a transient intermediate state was observed in TR-SAXS experiments that only exists in the aqueous dispersions with a larger GO size (11 nm). This serves as evidence that the size of GO is critical for regulating ice formation. Elastic neutron scattering results indicate that ice is formed in all samples and thermal hysteresis occurs in GO aqueous dispersions in both H₂O and D₂O. The structural and dynamics information about water molecules in GO, extracted from QENS, reveals different dynamical behaviors of water molecules in GO aqueous dispersions when approaching the ice formation temperature.

Rheology of granular liquids in extensional flows: Beyond the μ(I)-law

The Granular Integration Through Transients (GITT) formalism gives a theoretical description of the rheology of moderately dense granular flows and suspensions. In this work, we extend the GITT equations beyond the case of simple shear flows studied before. Applying this to the particular example of extensional flows, we show that the predicted behavior is somewhat different from that of the more frequently studied simple shear case, as illustrated by the possibility of nonmonotonous evolution of the effective friction coefficient μ with the inertial number I. By the reduction of the GITT equations to simple toy models, we provide a generalization of the μ(I)-law true for any type of flow deformation. Our analysis also includes a study of the Trouton ratio, which is shown to behave quite similarly to that of dense colloidal suspensions.

Temperature-dependent dynamic structure factors for liquid water inferred from inelastic neutron scattering measurements

Temperature-dependent dynamic structure factors S(Q, ω) for liquid water have been calculated using a composite model, which is based on the decoupling approximation of the mean square displacement of the water molecules into diffusion and solid-like vibrational parts. The solid-like vibrational part S_vib(Q, ω) is calculated with the phonon expansion method established in the framework of the incoherent Gaussian approximation. The diffusion part S_diff(Q, ω) relies on the Egelstaff-Schofield translational diffusion model corrected for jump diffusions and rotational diffusions with the Singwi-Sjölander random model and Sears expansion, respectively. Systematics of the model parameters as a function of temperature were deduced from quasi-elastic neutron scattering data analysis reported in the literature and from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations relying on the TIP4P/2005f model. The resulting S(Q, ω) values are confronted by means of Monte Carlo simulations to inelastic neutron scattering data measured with IN4, IN5, and IN6 time-of-flight spectrometers of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) (Grenoble, France). A modest range of temperatures (283-494 K) has been investigated with neutron wavelengths corresponding to incident neutron energies ranging from 0.57 to 67.6 meV. The neutron-weighted multiphonon spectra deduced from the ILL data indicate a slight overestimation by the MD simulations of the frequency shift and broadening of the librational band. The descriptive power of the composite model was suited for improving the comparison to experiments via Bayesian updating of prior model parameters inferred from MD simulations. The reported posterior temperature-dependent densities of state of hydrogen in H₂O would represent valuable insights for studying the collective coupling interactions in the water molecule between the inter- and intramolecular degrees of freedom.

Spatiotemporal mapping of mesoscopic liquid dynamics

The study of liquid dynamics at mesoscopic scales is still strewn with difficulty due to limitations in theory and experiment. Historically, significant attention has been given to the analysis of space-time correlation functions and their frequency-Fourier transforms at a few discrete wave numbers. The massive computing power afforded by modern high performance computing clusters and the advent of a wide-angle neutron spin-echo spectrometer, however, have unlocked a more intuitive and fruitful approach to this problem. Using molecular dynamics simulations, here we demonstrate the benefits of spatiotemporally mapping intermediate scattering functions on a dense grid of correlation times and wave numbers. Four model systems are investigated: a Lennard-Jones liquid, a coarse-grained bead-spring polymer, a molten sodium chloride, and a poly(ethylene oxide) melt. We show that the spatiotemporal mapping approach is particularly useful for elucidating the mesoscopic dynamics in these liquids, where several underlying mechanisms, such as molecular relaxations, hydrodynamic modes, and nonhydrodynamic excitations, are potentially at play. Compared to the traditional method, direct visualization of density space-time correlation functions on two-dimensional color maps permits appraisals of complicated dynamical behavior at mesoscales in a global manner. For example, the scaling relations between space and time for different types of molecular motions can be straightforwardly identified on these plots, without any model-dependent analysis. Additionally, we show how theoretical ideas regarding collective mesoscopic dynamics, such as the classical hydrodynamic theory, the convolution approximation, and a recently proposed phenomenological model, can be discussed in terms of the global features of spatiotemporal maps of intermediate scattering functions. The new perspective offered by the spatiotemporal mapping method should prove useful for the study of liquid dynamics in general.

Surface Diffusion by Means of Stochastic Wave Functions. The Ballistic Regime

Stochastic wave function formalism is briefly introduced and applied to study the dynamics of open quantum systems; in particular, the diffusion of Xe atoms adsorbed on a Pt(111) surface. By starting from a Lindblad functional and within the microscopic Caldeira–Leggett model for linear dissipation, a stochastic differential equation (Ito^-type differential equation) is straightforwardly obtained. The so-called intermediate scattering function within the ballistic regime is obtained, which is observable in Helium spin echo experiments. An ideal two-dimensional gas has been observed in this regime, leading to this function behaving as a Gaussian function. The influence of surface–adsorbate interaction is also analyzed by using the potential of two interactions describing flat and corrugated surfaces. Very low surface coverages are considered and, therefore, the adsorbate–adsorbate interaction is safely neglected. Good agreement is observed when our numerical results are compared with the corresponding experimental results and previous standard Langevin simulations.

Correlated atomic dynamics in liquid seen in real space and time

In liquids, the timescales for structure, diffusion, and phonon are all similar, of the order of a pico-second. This not only makes characterization of liquid dynamics difficult but also renders it highly questionable to describe liquids in these terms. In particular, the current definition of the structure of liquids by the instantaneous structure may need to be expanded because the liquid structure is inherently dynamic. Here, we advocate describing the liquid structure through the distinct-part of the Van Hove function, which can be determined by inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering measurements as well as by simulation. It depicts the dynamic correlation between atoms in space and time, starting with the instantaneous correlation function at t = 0. The observed Van Hove functions show that the atomic dynamics is strongly correlated in some liquids, such as water. The effect of atomic correlation on various transport properties of fluid, including viscosity and diffusivity, is discussed.

Local self-motion of water through the Van Hove function

We show that the self-part of the Van Hove function-the correlation function describing the dynamics of a single molecule-of water can be determined through a high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering experiment. The measurement of inelastic x-ray scattering up to 10Å^{-1} makes it possible to convert the inelastic x-ray scattering spectra into the Van Hove function, and its self-part is extracted from the short-range correlations. The diffusivity estimated from the short-range dynamics of water molecules is different from the long-range diffusivity measured by other methods. This approach using the experimentally determined self-part of the Van Hove function will be useful to the study of the local dynamics of atoms and molecules in liquids.

Dynamics of proteins in solution

The dynamics of proteins in solution includes a variety of processes, such as backbone and side-chain fluctuations, interdomain motions, as well as global rotational and translational (i.e. center of mass) diffusion. Since protein dynamics is related to protein function and essential transport processes, a detailed mechanistic understanding and monitoring of protein dynamics in solution is highly desirable. The hierarchical character of protein dynamics requires experimental tools addressing a broad range of time- and length scales. We discuss how different techniques contribute to a comprehensive picture of protein dynamics, and focus in particular on results from neutron spectroscopy. We outline the underlying principles and review available instrumentation as well as related analysis frameworks.

Linking Structure to Dynamics in Protic Ionic Liquids: A Neutron Scattering Study of Correlated and Single-Particle Motions

Coupling between dynamical heterogeneity of ionic liquids and their structural periodicity on different length-scales can be directly probed by quasielastic neutron scattering with polarization analysis. The technique provides the tools to investigate single-particle and cooperative ion motions separately and, thus, dynamics of ion associations affecting the net charge transport can be experimentally explored. The focus of this study is the structure-dynamic relationship in the protic ionic liquid, triethylammonium triflate, characterized by strong hydrogen bonds between cations and anions. The site-selective deuterium/hydrogen-isotope substitution was applied to modulate the relative contributions of different atom groups to the total coherent and incoherent scattering signal. This approach in combination with molecular dynamics simulations allowed us to obtain a sophisticated description of cation self-diffusion and confined ion pair dynamics from the incoherent spectral component by using the acidic proton as a tagged particle. The coherent contribution of the neutron spectra demonstrated substantial ion association leading to collective ion migration that preserves charge alteration on picosecond time scale, as well as correlation of the localized dynamics occurring between adjacent ions.

Coherent X-rays reveal the influence of cage effects on ultrafast water dynamics

The dynamics of liquid water feature a variety of time scales, ranging from extremely fast ballistic-like thermal motion, to slower molecular diffusion and hydrogen-bond rearrangements. Here, we utilize coherent X-ray pulses to investigate the sub-100 fs equilibrium dynamics of water from ambient conditions down to supercooled temperatures. This novel approach utilizes the inherent capability of X-ray speckle visibility spectroscopy to measure equilibrium intermolecular dynamics with lengthscale selectivity, by measuring oxygen motion in momentum space. The observed decay of the speckle contrast at the first diffraction peak, which reflects tetrahedral coordination, is attributed to motion on a molecular scale within the first 120 fs. Through comparison with molecular dynamics simulations, we conclude that the slowing down upon cooling from 328 K down to 253 K is not due to simple thermal ballistic-like motion, but that cage effects play an important role even on timescales over 25 fs due to hydrogen-bonding.

Nonaffine deformation and tunable yielding of colloidal assemblies at the air-water interface

Silica nanoparticles trapped at the air-water interface form a 2D solid state with amorphous order. We propose a theoretical model to describe how this solid-like state deforms under a shear strain ramp up to and beyond a yielding point which leads to plastic flow. The model accounts for all the particle-level and many-body physics of the system: nonaffine displacements, local connectivity and its evolution in terms of cage-breaking, and interparticle interactions mediated by the particle chemistry and colloidal forces. The model is able to reproduce experimental data with only two non-trivial fitting parameters: the relaxation time of the cage and the viscous relaxation time. The interparticle spring constant contains information about the strength of interparticle bonding which is tuned by the amount of surfactant that renders the particles hydrophobic and mutually attractive. This framework opens up the possibility of quantitatively tuning and rationally designing the mechanical response of colloidal assemblies at the air-water interface. Also, it provides a mechanistic explanation for the observed non-monotonic dependence of yield strain on surfactant concentration.

Dynamic heterogeneities and non-Gaussian behavior in two-dimensional randomly confined colloidal fluids

A binary mixture of superparamagnetic colloidal particles is confined between glass plates such that the large particles become fixed and provide a two-dimensional disordered matrix for the still mobile small particles, which form a fluid. By varying fluid and matrix area fractions and tuning the interactions between the superparamagnetic particles via an external magnetic field, different regions of the state diagram are explored. The mobile particles exhibit delocalized dynamics at small matrix area fractions and localized motion at high matrix area fractions, and the localization transition is rounded by the soft interactions [T. O. E. Skinner et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 128301 (2013)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.111.128301]. Expanding on previous work, we find the dynamics of the tracers to be strongly heterogeneous and show that molecular dynamics simulations of an ideal gas confined in a fixed matrix exhibit similar behavior. The simulations show how these soft interactions make the dynamics more heterogeneous compared to the disordered Lorentz gas and lead to strong non-Gaussian fluctuations.

Segment-scale, force-level theory of mesoscopic dynamic localization and entropic elasticity in entangled chain polymer liquids

We develop a segment-scale, force-based theory for the breakdown of the unentangled Rouse model and subsequent emergence of isotropic mesoscopic localization and entropic elasticity in chain polymer liquids in the absence of ergodicity-restoring anisotropic reptation or activated hopping motion. The theory is formulated in terms of a conformational N-dynamic-order-parameter generalized Langevin equation approach. It is implemented using a universal field-theoretic Gaussian thread model of polymer structure and closed at the level of the chain dynamic second moment matrix. The physical idea is that the isotropic Rouse model fails due to the dynamical emergence, with increasing chain length, of time-persistent intermolecular contacts determined by the combined influence of local uncrossability, long range polymer connectivity, and a self-consistent treatment of chain motion and the dynamic forces that hinder it. For long chain melts, the mesoscopic localization length (identified as the tube diameter) and emergent entropic elasticity predictions are in near quantitative agreement with experiment. Moreover, the onset chain length scales with the semi-dilute crossover concentration with a realistic numerical prefactor. Distinctive novel predictions are made for various off-diagonal correlation functions that quantify the full spatial structure of the dynamically localized polymer conformation. As the local excluded volume constraint and/or intrachain bonding spring are softened to allow chain crossability, the tube diameter is predicted to swell until it reaches the radius-of-gyration at which point mesoscopic localization vanishes in a discontinuous manner. A dynamic phase diagram for such a delocalization transition is constructed, which is qualitatively consistent with simulations and the classical concept of a critical entanglement degree of polymerization.

Dynamic cross-correlations between entangled biofilaments as they diffuse

Entanglement in polymer and biological physics involves a state in which linear interthreaded macromolecules in isotropic liquids diffuse in a spatially anisotropic manner beyond a characteristic mesoscopic time and length scale (tube diameter). The physical reason is that linear macromolecules become transiently localized in directions transverse to their backbone but diffuse with relative ease parallel to it. Within the resulting broad spectrum of relaxation times there is an extended period before the longest relaxation time when filaments occupy a time-averaged cylindrical space of near-constant density. Here we show its implication with experiments based on fluorescence tracking of dilutely labeled macromolecules. The entangled pairs of aqueous F-actin biofilaments diffuse with separation-dependent dynamic cross-correlations that exceed those expected from continuum hydrodynamics up to strikingly large spatial distances of ≈15 µm, which is more than 10⁴ times the size of the solvent water molecules in which they are dissolved, and is more than 50 times the dynamic tube diameter, but is almost equal to the filament length. Modeling this entangled system as a collection of rigid rods, we present a statistical mechanical theory that predicts these long-range dynamic correlations as an emergent consequence of an effective long-range interpolymer repulsion due to the de Gennes correlation hole, which is a combined consequence of chain connectivity and uncrossability. The key physical assumption needed to make theory and experiment agree is that solutions of entangled biofilaments localized in tubes that are effectively dynamically incompressible over the relevant intermediate time and length scales.

Structural relaxation and diffusion in a model colloid-polymer mixture: dynamical density functional theory and simulation

Within the Asakura-Oosawa model, we study structural relaxation in mixtures of colloids and polymers subject to Brownian motion in the overdamped limit. We obtain the time evolution of the self and distinct parts of the van Hove distribution function G(r,t) by means of dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) using an accurate free-energy functional based on Rosenfeld's fundamental measure theory. In order to remove unphysical interactions within the self part, we extend the recently proposed quenched functional framework (Stopper et al 2015 J. Chem. Phys. 143 181105) toward mixtures. In addition, we obtain results for the long-time self diffusion coefficients of colloids and polymers from dynamic Monte Carlo simulations, which we incorporate into the DDFT. From the resulting DDFT equations we calculate G(r, t), which we find to agree very well with our simulations. In particular, we examine the influence of polymers which are slow relative to the colloids-a scenario for which both DDFT and simulation show a significant peak forming at r  =  0 in the colloid-colloid distribution function, akin to experimental findings involving gelation of colloidal suspensions. Moreover, we observe that, in the presence of slow polymers, the long-time self diffusivity of the colloids displays a maximum at an intermediate colloid packing fraction. This behavior is captured by a simple semi-empirical formula, which provides an excellent description of the data.

The relative diffusive transport rate of SrI2 in water changes over the nanometer length scale as measured by coherent quasielastic neutron scattering

X-ray and neutron scattering have been used to provide insight into the structures of ionic solutions for over a century, but the probes have covered distances shorter than 8 Å. For the non-hydrolyzing salt SrI2 in aqueous solution, a locally ordered lattice of ions exists that scatters slow neutrons coherently down to at least 0.1 mol L(-1) concentration, where the measured average distance between scatterers is over 18 Å. To investigate the motions of these scatterers, coherent quasielastic neutron scattering (CQENS) data on D2O solutions with SrI2 at 1, 0.8, 0.6, and 0.4 mol L(-1) concentrations was obtained to provide an experimental measure of the diffusive transport rate for the motion between pairs of ions relative to each other. Because CQENS measures the motion of one ion relative to another, the frame of reference is centered on an ion, which is unique among all diffusion measurement methods. We call the measured quantity the pairwise diffusive transport rate Dp. In addition to this ion centered frame of reference, the diffusive transport rate can be measured as a function of the momentum transfer q, where q = (4π/λ)sin θ with a scattering angle of 2θ. Since q is related to the interion distance (d = 2π/q), for the experimental range 0.2 Å(-1)≤q≤ 1.0 Å(-1), Dp is, then, measured over interion distances from 40 Å to ≈6 Å. We find the measured diffusional transport rates increase with increasing distance between scatterers over the entire range covered and interpret this behavior to be caused by dynamic coupling among the ions. Within the model of Fickian diffusion, at the longer interionic distances Dp is greater than the Nernst-Hartley value for an infinitely dilute solution. For these nm-distance diffusional transport rates to conform with the lower, macroscopically measured diffusion coefficients, we propose that local, coordinated counter motion of at least pairs of ions is part of the transport process.

On the Gaussian approximation in colloidal hard sphere fluids

We study the behaviour of the self-intermediate scattering function and self-van Hove correlation function for quasi-two-dimensional colloidal hard sphere fluids at a range of area fractions. We compute these functions first directly from the particle coordinates and secondly from the mean squared displacement via the Gaussian approximation. This allows us to test the validity of this approximation over a range of length and time scales, where we find that the Gaussian approximation holds if the hydrodynamic limits are appropriately probed. Surprisingly, only small deviations from Gaussian behaviour are seen at intermediate times, even for dense fluids. We next consider these deviations from Gaussian behaviour firstly via the non-Gaussian parameter and secondly by considering the relaxation times of the intermediate scattering function. From these measurements we develop a scaling relation in order to directly determine the combinations of wavevectors and times at which the non-Gaussian behavior is seen. This allows for the clear identification of the hydrodynamic regimes and thus provides new insight into the crossover between long- and short-time self-diffusion.

On scattered waves and lipid domains: detecting membrane rafts with X-rays and neutrons

In order to understand the biological role of lipids in cell membranes, it is necessary to determine the mesoscopic structure of well-defined model membrane systems. Neutron and X-ray scattering are non-invasive, probe-free techniques that have been used extensively in such systems to probe length scales ranging from angstroms to microns, and dynamics occurring over picosecond to millisecond time scales. Recent developments in the area of phase separated lipid systems mimicking membrane rafts will be presented, and the underlying concepts of the different scattering techniques used to study them will be discussed in detail.

Correlated two-particle diffusion in dense colloidal suspensions at early times: Theory and comparison to experiment

The spatially resolved diffusive dynamic cross correlations of a pair of colloids in dense quasi-two-dimensional monolayers of identical particles are studied experimentally and theoretically at early times where motion is Fickian. In very dense systems where strong oscillatory equilibrium packing correlations are present, we find an exponential decay of the dynamic cross correlations on small and intermediate length scales. At large separations where structure becomes random, an apparent power law decay with an exponent of approximately -2.2 is observed. For a moderately dense suspension where local structural correlations are essentially absent, this same apparent power law decay is observed over all probed interparticle separations. A microscopic nonhydrodynamic theory is constructed for the dynamic cross correlations which is based on interparticle frictional effects and effective structural forces. Hydrodynamics enters only via setting the very short-time single-particle self-diffusion constant. No-adjustable-parameter quantitative predictions of the theory for the dynamic cross correlations are in good agreement with experiment over all length scales. The origin of the long-range apparent power law is the influence of the constraint of fixed interparticle separation on the amplitude of the mean square force exerted on the two tagged particles by the surrounding fluid. The theory is extended to study high-packing-fraction 3D hard sphere fluids. The same pattern of an oscillatory exponential form of the dynamic cross correlation function is predicted in the structural regime, but the long-range tail decays faster than in monolayers with an exponent of -3.

Statistics of non-affine defect precursors: tailoring defect densities in colloidal crystals using external fields

Coarse-graining atomic displacements in a solid produces both local affine strains and "non-affine" fluctuations. Here we study the equilibrium dynamics of these coarse grained quantities to obtain space-time dependent correlation functions. We show how a subset of these thermally excited, non-affine fluctuations act as precursors for the nucleation of lattice defects and suggest how defect probabilities may be altered by an experimentally realisable "external" field conjugate to the global non-affinity parameter. Our results are amenable to verification in experiments on colloidal crystals using commonly available holographic laser tweezer and video microscopy techniques, and may lead to simple ways of controlling the defect density of a colloidal solid.

Structural heterogeneities at the origin of acoustic and transport anomalies in glycerol glass-former

By means of large scale molecular dynamics simulations, we explore mesoscopic properties of prototypical glycerol glass-former above and below the glass transition. The model used, in excellent agreement with various experimental techniques, permits to carefully study the structure and the vibrational dynamics. We find that a medium range order is present in glycerol glass-former and arises from hydrogen bond network extension. The characteristic size of the structural heterogeneities is related to the anomalous properties of acoustic vibrations (Rayleigh scattering, "mode softening," and Boson Peak) in the glassy state. Finally the characteristic size of these heterogeneities, nearly constant in temperature, is also connected to the cross-over between structural relaxation and diffusion in liquid glycerol.

Multi-component modeling of quasielastic neutron scattering from phospholipid membranes

We investigated molecular motions in the 0.3-350 ps time range of D2O-hydrated bilayers of 1-palmitoyl-oleoyl-sn-glycero-phosphocholine and 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-phosphocholine in the liquid phase by quasielastic neutron scattering. Model analysis of sets of spectra covering scale lengths from 4.8 to 30 Å revealed the presence of three types of motion taking place on well-separated time scales: (i) slow diffusion of the whole phospholipid molecules in a confined cylindrical region; (ii) conformational motion of the phospholipid chains; and (iii) fast uniaxial rotation of the hydrogen atoms around their carbon atoms. Based on theoretical models for the hydrogen dynamics in phospholipids, the spatial extent of these motions was analysed in detail and the results were compared with existing literature data. The complex dynamics of protons was described in terms of elemental dynamical processes involving different parts of the phospholipid chain on whose motions the hydrogen atoms ride.
