State-dependent volume isotope shifts of low-lying states of group-IIa and -IIb elements

Laser Spectroscopy of Neutron-Rich ^{207,208}Hg Isotopes: Illuminating the Kink and Odd-Even Staggering in Charge Radii across the N=126 Shell Closure

The mean-square charge radii of ^{207,208}Hg (Z=80, N=127, 128) have been studied for the first time and those of ^{202,203,206}Hg (N=122, 123, 126) remeasured by the application of in-source resonance-ionization laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE (CERN). The characteristic kink in the charge radii at the N=126 neutron shell closure has been revealed, providing the first information on its behavior below the Z=82 proton shell closure. A theoretical analysis has been performed within relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov and nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approaches, considering both the new mercury results and existing lead data. Contrary to previous interpretations, it is demonstrated that both the kink at N=126 and the odd-even staggering (OES) in its vicinity can be described predominately at the mean-field level and that pairing does not need to play a crucial role in their origin. A new OES mechanism is suggested, related to the staggering in the occupation of the different neutron orbitals in odd- and even-A nuclei, facilitated by particle-vibration coupling for odd-A nuclei.

Absolute frequency and isotope shift measurements of mercury 1S0-3P1 transition

We report the measurement of the absolute frequencies of the 6s^{2 1}S₀-6s6p ³P₁ transition (253.7 nm) and the relevant isotope shifts in five mercury isotopes  ¹⁹⁸Hg,  ¹⁹⁹Hg,  ²⁰⁰Hg,  ²⁰²Hg, and  ²⁰⁴Hg. The Doppler-free saturated absorption measurements were performed in an atomic vapour cell at room temperature with a four-harmonic generated (FHG) continuous-wave (cw) laser digitally locked to the atomic transition. It was referenced with a femtosecond optical frequency comb synchronized to the frequency of local representation of the International Atomic Time to provide traceability to the SI second by the 330 km-long stabilized fibre optical link. The transition frequencies and isotope shifts have been determined with an accuracy of a few hundred kHz, at least one order of magnitude better than any previous measurement. By making a King plot with the isotope shifts of 6s6p ³P₂-6s7s ³S₁ transition (546 nm) we determined the accurate value of the ratio of the electronic field-shift parameters E₅₄₆/E₂₅₄ and estimated the electronic field-shift term E₂₅₄.

Probing New Long-Range Interactions by Isotope Shift Spectroscopy

We explore a method to probe new long- and intermediate-range interactions using precision atomic isotope shift spectroscopy. We develop a formalism to interpret linear King plots as bounds on new physics with minimal theory inputs. We focus only on bounding the new physics contributions that can be calculated independently of the standard model nuclear effects. We apply our method to existing Ca^{+} data and project its sensitivity to conjectured new bosons with spin-independent couplings to the electron and the neutron using narrow transitions in other atoms and ions, specifically, Sr and Yb. Future measurements are expected to improve the relative precision by 5 orders of magnitude, and they can potentially lead to an unprecedented sensitivity for bosons within the 0.3 to 10 MeV mass range.

Early onset of ground state deformation in neutron deficient polonium isotopes

In-source resonant ionization laser spectroscopy of the even-A polonium isotopes (192-210,216,218)Po has been performed using the 6p(3)7s (5)S(2) to 6p(3)7p (5)P(2) (λ=843.38  nm) transition in the polonium atom (Po-I) at the CERN ISOLDE facility. The comparison of the measured isotope shifts in (200-210)Po with a previous data set allows us to test for the first time recent large-scale atomic calculations that are essential to extract the changes in the mean-square charge radius of the atomic nucleus. When going to lighter masses, a surprisingly large and early departure from sphericity is observed, which is only partly reproduced by beyond mean field calculations.
