Electron emission in He+-atom and He+-molecule collisions: A combined experimental and theoretical study

EDDIX--a database of ionisation double differential cross sections

The use of Monte Carlo track structure is a choice method in biophysical modelling and calculations. To precisely model 3D and 4D tracks, the cross section for the ionisation by an incoming ion, double differential in the outgoing electron energy and angle, is required. However, the double differential cross section cannot be theoretically modelled over the full range of parameters. To address this issue, a database of all available experimental data has been constructed. Currently, the database of Experimental Double Differential Ionisation Cross sections (EDDIX) contains over 1200 digitalised experimentally measured datasets from the 1960s to present date, covering all available ion species (hydrogen to uranium) and all available target species. Double differential cross sections are also presented with the aid of an eight parameter functions fitted to the cross sections. The parameters include projectile species and charge, target nuclear charge and atomic mass, projectile atomic mass and energy, electron energy and deflection angle. It is planned to freely distribute EDDIX and make it available to the radiation research community for use in the analytical and numerical modelling of track structure.

Evidence for Fermi-shuttle ionization in intermediate velocity C+ + Xe collisions

Experimental evidence has been found for consecutive projectile-target-projectile (triple) and projectile-target-projectile-target (quadruple) "ping-pong" scattering of ionized target electrons in single C+ +Xe collisions at 150 and 233 keV/u impact energies. Distinct signatures of the multiple electron scattering contributions to the high-energy part (300-3400 eV) of the double differential electron spectra have been separated and identified with the help of reference measurements using He+ projectile ions and different calculations.

W values for helium particles in nitrogen and argon in the energy range from 10 keV to 10 MeV

An analytical model is presented that facilitates the calculation of the mean energy W expended to produce an ion pair upon complete slow-down for heavy particles in gases. This model is applied to the calculation of the W values for helium beams of energies from 10 keV to 10 MeV in argon and nitrogen gas. Good agreement of the theoretical W values with the experimental ones is found in the case of nitrogen. The theoretical results for argon are about 15% higher than the experimental values throughout the entire energy range. However, they show a similar energy dependence. The theoretical and the experimental W values for nitrogen exhibit an extraordinary energy dependence at energies around 300 keV, at which the cross-section for charge exchange cycles reaches the maximal value. Such a phenomenon was also observed in the case of the W values for protons, which show a clear minimum at the energy of the maximal cross-section for charge exchange cycles.
