Magnetic behavior of metastable fcc Fe-Cu after thermal treatments

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Aerosol Nanoparticles of Fe and Its Alloys

Structure and magnetic properties of aerosol nanoparticles of Fe and its alloys (FeMn, FeNi, FeNiMn, FePt, FeCr, FeCo, and FeCu) have been reviewed. It has been shown that, compared to a bulk material, the particles have a number of specific features being of much fundamental and applied interest. The effect of both a quenched high-temperature Fe modification and its oxides on the structure and magnetism of nanoparticles has been considered in detail. Particular attention has been paid to the recently observed fine structure in the hyperfine field distribution at iron nuclei in Mössbauer spectra for pure iron and its alloys both as a bulk and aerosol nanoparticles. This phenomenon makes it possible to reveal very weak magnetic interactions in the system under study. The plausible origin of these magnetic interactions has been also discussed.

Hyperfine and magnetic properties of Fe-Cu clusters and Fe precipitates embedded in a Cu matrix

Using the first-principles real-space linear muffin-tin orbital method within the atomic sphere approximation (RS-LMTO-ASA) we study hyperfine and local magnetic properties of substituted pure Fe and Fe-Cu clusters in an fcc Cu matrix. Spin and orbital contributions to magnetic moments, hyperfine fields and the Mössbauer isomer shifts at the Fe sites in Fe precipitates and Fe-Cu alloy clusters of sizes up to 60 Fe atoms embedded in the Cu matrix are calculated and the influence of the local environment on these properties is discussed.

Superferromagnetism in mechanically alloyed fcc Fe(23)Cu(77) with bimodal cluster size distribution

Magnetic measurements, x-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used to characterize a nanostructured fcc Fe(23)Cu(77) at.% alloy prepared by high-energy ball-milling, addressing in particular the effect of clustering on the nature of the interacting magnetic entities. The interpretation of magnetization measurements leads to the conclusion that grains, whose mean size is ∼16 nm, contain two populations of magnetic Fe-rich nanoclusters with a bimodal size distribution. These two sets of clusters contain about 14 and 400 Fe atoms and have magnetic moments of 30 µ(B) and 860 µ(B), respectively. The inter-cluster ferromagnetic interactions that lead to superferromagnetism with a Curie temperature T(C)∼220 K can be described by a mean field determined by the smaller clusters only, which account for 90% of the magnetization.

Iron changes in natural and Fe(III) loaded montmorillonite during carbon nanotube growth

A detailed elaboration of the transformations of iron species, present in natural and Fe(NO(3))(3) loaded montmorillonite, during carbon deposition and carbon nanotube growth is described. According to transmission electron microscopy results, deposited carbon atoms form fibres in the case of pristine montmorillonite and multiwalled carbon nanotubes in the case of Fe(III) loaded montmorillonite. Mössbauer and x-ray diffraction analysis results point to an extensive reduction of structural and intercalated Fe(III) cations to Fe(II) with the latter migrating from the interlayer space to the vacant octahedral sites of the mineral's lattice. Such migration of the non-structural iron catalyst prohibits extensive contamination of the final composite with various metal catalyst impurities. The crucial role of the active catalytic centres in the formation of carbon nanotubes is ascribed to a minor quantity of iron, found entrapped in the carbon nanostructures, which, at the end of the reaction, is identified as iron carbide. The interesting formation of a nanometric γ-iron precipitate is also detected, which is probably stabilized through strong interactions with the lattice of montmorillonite. Finally, it is demonstrated that iron-rich natural clay minerals can serve as direct catalysts for carbon nanotube growth.

Microstructure investigations of ball milled materials

HREM and FEG TEM were emphasized and extensively used to follow the most subtle changes in the structure and composition of ball-milled Cu, Fe-Cu, and thermally decomposed Fe60Cu40. Some significant results are obtained and summarized as follows: HREM shows that the deformation of ball-milled copper proceeds mainly by twinning and shear bands (SBs) formation. The nano-grains formed during ball milling (BM) contain a high density of dislocations. The grain boundaries (GBs) of nanocrystalline (NC) Cu prepared by BM are ordered, curved, and strained, but disordering, lattice distortion, and nanovoids in local regions were frequently observed. Nanoscale composition analysis on mechanically alloyed Fe16Cu84 shows that the average Fe content in both the interior of grains and the GBs is close to the designed composition, which proves that a supersaturated solid solution has really formed. However, the Fe content is rather inhomogeneous between the larger and smaller grains, which infers the inhomogeneous mixing of Fe and Cu during mechanical alloying (MA). NC structure and the mechanical force-enhanced fast diffusion are the reasons of the formation of supersaturated solid solutions in immiscible systems with positive enthalpy of mixing. HREM observations carried out with the thermally decomposed Fe60Cu40 solid solution show that the Nishiyama (N-W) or Kurdyumov-Sachs (K-S) orientation relationships exist between alpha-Fe and Cu. Energy dispersive X-ray spectra (EDXS) results show that the Cu content in these alpha-Fe grains reaches as high as 9.5 at.% even after heating to 1,400 degrees C, which is even higher than the maximum solubility of Cu in gamma-Fe at 1,094 degrees C.
