Magnetic scaling in cuprate superconductors

Enhanced Magnetic Interaction by Face-Shared Hydride Anions in 6H-BaCrO2H

Studies on magnetic oxyhydrides have been almost limited to perovskite-based lattices with corner-sharing octahedra with a M-H-M (M: transition metal) angle of θ ∼ 180°. Using a high-pressure method, we prepared BaCrO₂H with a 6H-type hexagonal perovskite structure with corner- and face-sharing octahedra, offering a unique opportunity to investigate magnetic interactions based on a θ ∼ 90° case. Neutron diffraction for BaCrO₂H revealed an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at T_N ∼ 375 K, which is higher than ∼240 K in BaCrO_3-xF_x. The relatively high T_N of BaCrO₂H can be explained by the preferred occupancy of H^- at the face-sharing site that provides AFM superexchange in addition to AFM direct exchange interactions. First-principles calculations on BaCrO₂H in comparison with BaCrO₂F and BaMnO₃ further reveal that the direct Cr-Cr interaction is significantly enhanced by shortening the Cr-Cr distance due to the covalent nature of H^-. This study provides a useful strategy for the extensive control of magnetic interactions by exploiting the difference in the covalency of multiple anions.

Simulation of the NMR response in the pseudogap regime of the cuprates

The pseudogap in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors was discovered as a suppression of the Knight shift and spin relaxation time measured in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. However, theoretical understanding of this suppression in terms of the magnetic susceptiblility of correlated itinerant fermion systems was so far lacking. Here we study the temperature and doping evolution of these quantities on the two-dimensional Hubbard model using cluster dynamical mean field theory. We recover the suppression of the Knight shift and the linear-in-T spin echo decay that increases with doping. The relaxation rate shows a marked increase as T is lowered but no indication of a pseudogap on the Cu site, and a clear downturn on the O site, consistent with experimental results on single layer materials but different from double layer materials. The consistency of these results with experiment suggests that the pseudogap is well described by strong short-range correlation effects.

Charge orders, magnetism and pairings in the cuprate superconductors

We review the recent developments in the field of cuprate superconductors with special focus on the recently observed charge order in the underdoped compounds. We introduce new theoretical developments following the study of the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in two dimensions, in which preemptive orders in both charge and superconducting (SC) sectors emerge, that are in turn related by an SU(2) symmetry. We consider the implications of this proliferation of orders in the underdoped region, and provide a study of the type of fluctuations which characterize the SU(2) symmetry. We identify an intermediate energy scale where the SC fluctuations are dominant and argue that they are unstable towards the formation of a resonant excitonic state at the pseudogap temperature T (*). We discuss the implications of this scenario for a few key experiments.

Heavy holes as a precursor to superconductivity in antiferromagnetic CeIn3

Numerous phenomenological parallels have been drawn between f- and d-electron systems in an attempt to understand their display of unconventional superconductivity. The microscopics of how electrons evolve from participation in large moment antiferromagnetism to superconductivity in these systems, however, remains a mystery. Knowing the origin of Cooper paired electrons in momentum space is a crucial prerequisite for understanding the pairing mechanism. Of special interest are pressure-induced superconductors CeIn(3) and CeRhIn(5) in which disparate magnetic and superconducting orders apparently coexist-arising from within the same f-electron degrees of freedom. Here, we present ambient pressure quantum oscillation measurements on CeIn(3) that crucially identify the electronic structure-potentially similar to high-temperature superconductors. Heavy hole pockets of f-character are revealed in CeIn(3), undergoing an unexpected effective mass divergence well before the antiferromagnetic critical field. We thus uncover the softening of a branch of quasiparticle excitations located away from the traditional spin fluctuation-dominated antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. The observed Fermi surface of dispersive f-electrons in CeIn(3) could potentially explain the emergence of Cooper pairs from within a strong moment antiferromagnet.

Direct observation of the coexistence of the pseudogap and superconducting quasiparticles in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 + y by time-resolved optical spectroscopy

We report the ultrafast optical response of quasiparticles (QPs) in both the pseudogap (PG) and superconducting (SC) states of an underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 + y (Bi2212) single crystal measured with the time-resolved pump-probe technique. At a probe energy variant planck's over omegapr = 1.55 eV, it is found that the reflectivity change DeltaR/R changes its sign at exactly Tc, which allows the direct separation of the charge dynamics of PG and SC QPs. Further systematic investigations indicate that the transient signals associated with PG and SC QPs depend on the probe beam energy and polarization. By tuning them below Tc, two distinct components can be detected simultaneously, providing evidence for the coexistence of PG and SC QPs.

75As NMR studies of superconducting LaFeAsO0.9F0.1

We have performed 75As nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on aligned powders of the new LaFeAsO0.9F0.1 superconductor. In the normal state, we find a strong temperature dependence of the spin shift and Korringa behavior of the spin lattice relaxation rate. In the superconducting state, we find evidence for line nodes in the superconducting gap and spin-singlet pairing. Our measurements reveal a strong anisotropy of the spin lattice relaxation rate, which suggests that superconducting vortices contribute to the relaxation rate when the field is parallel to the c axis but not for the perpendicular direction.

Phenomenological model of protected behavior in the pseudogap state of underdoped cuprate superconductors

By extending previous work on the scaling of low frequency magnetic properties of the 2-1-4 cuprates to the 1-2-3 materials, we arrive at a consistent phenomenological description of protected behavior in the pseudogap state of the magnetically underdoped cuprates. Between zero hole doping and a doping level of approximately 0.22, it reflects the presence of a mixture of an insulating spin liquid that produces the measured magnetic scaling behavior and a Fermi liquid that becomes superconducting for doping levels x>0.06. Our analysis suggests the existence of two quantum critical points, at doping levels x approximately 0.05 and x approximately 0.22, and that d-wave superconductivity in the pseudogap region arises from quasiparticle-spin liquid interaction, i.e., magnetic interactions between quasiparticles in the Fermi liquid induced by their coupling to the spin liquid excitations.

Pair density wave in the pseudogap state of high temperature superconductors

Recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments of Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) have shown evidence of real-space organization of electronic states at low energies in the pseudogap state [Science 303, 1995 (2004)]]. We argue based on symmetry considerations as well as model calculations that the experimentally observed modulations are due to a density wave of d-wave Cooper pairs without global phase coherence. We show that scanning tunneling microscopy measurements can distinguish a pair density wave from more typical electronic modulations such as those due to charge density wave ordering or scattering from an on site periodic potential.

Antiferromagnetic vortex core in Tl(2)Ba(2)CuO(6+delta) studied by nuclear magnetic resonance

Spatially resolved NMR is used to probe the magnetism in and around vortex cores of nearly optimally doped Tl(2)Ba(2)CuO(6+delta) (T(c)=85 K). The NMR relaxation rate T(-1)1 at the 205Tl site provides direct evidence that the antiferromagnetic (AF) spin correlation is significantly enhanced in the vortex core region. In the core region Cu spins show a local AF ordering with moments parallel to the layers at T(N)=20 K. Above T(N) the core region is in the paramagnetic state which is a reminiscence of the state above the pseudogap temperature (T(*) approximately 120 K), indicating that the pseudogap disappears within cores.

Strong spin-fluctuation effects on the photoemission line shape in the normal state of high-T(c) cuprates

We have studied the quasiboson model for photoemission from cuprates in the normal state, where quasiparticles are coupled to collective spin excitations strongly enhanced near momentum (pi,pi). The present model has a benefit to describe the observed crossover from the overdoped to the underdoped cases because it is in principle an infinite-order theory in the limit of narrow bandwidth. The anomalous dependences of the photoemission line shape on the momentum and hole concentration are consistently understood within the model with no adjustable parameter except for a doping-independent coupling constant.

Contributions of spin-lattice relaxation to the echo decay of planar Cu in high-temperature superconductors

Measurement of T2G, the Gaussian component of the spin-echo envelope of planar Cu nuclei in high-temperature superconductors, gives important information about the real part of the Cu electron spin susceptibility. In the traditional picture of the planar Cu echo decay, the internuclear coupling is assumed to remain static with respect to spin-lattice relaxation and mutual exchange fluctuations. In some circumstances, however, this assumption breaks down. We calculate the internuclear corrections arising from spin-lattice relaxation to the conventional theory of T2G and show that T2G can be easily corrected for these effects. We argue that mutual exchanges due to the perpendicular indirect couplings are suppressed in these materials. For YBa2Cu4O8, we find a correction on the order of 10% in T2g and using the corrected values we find that the isotope ration 63T2G/65T2G agrees with theory.
