Unified description for the nuclear equation of state and fragmentation in heavy-ion collisions

Density functional for the lattice gas from fundamental measure theory

We construct a density functional for the lattice gas or Ising model on square and cubic lattices based on lattice fundamental measure theory. To treat the nearest-neighbor attractions between the lattice gas particles, the model is mapped to a multicomponent model of hard particles with additional lattice polymers where effective attractions between particles arise from the depletion effect. The lattice polymers are further treated via the introduction of polymer clusters (labelled by the numbers of polymer they contain) such that the model becomes a multicomponent model of particles and polymer clusters with nonadditive hard interactions. The density functional for this nonadditive hard model is constructed with lattice fundamental measure theory. The resulting bulk phase diagram recovers the Bethe-Peierls approximation and planar interface tensions show a considerable improvement compared to the standard mean-field functional and are close to simulation results in three dimensions. We demonstrate the existence of planar interface solutions at chemical potentials away from coexistence when the equimolar interface position is constrained to arbitrary real values.

Thermal decomposition of RDX from reactive molecular dynamics

We use the recently developed reactive force field ReaxFF with molecular dynamics to study thermal induced chemistry in RDX [cyclic-[CH(2)N(NO(2))](3)] at various temperatures and densities. We find that the time evolution of the potential energy can be described reasonably well with a single exponential function from which we obtain an overall characteristic time of decomposition that increases with decreasing density and shows an Arrhenius temperature dependence. These characteristic timescales are in reasonable quantitative agreement with experimental measurements in a similar energetic material, HMX [cyclic-[CH(2)N(NO(2))](4)]. Our simulations show that the equilibrium population of CO and CO(2) (as well as their time evolution) depend strongly of density: at low density almost all carbon atoms form CO molecules; as the density increases larger aggregates of carbon appear leading to a C deficient gas phase and the appearance of CO(2) molecules. The equilibrium populations of N(2) and H(2)O are more insensitive with respect to density and form in the early stages of the decomposition process with similar timescales.

Shock waves in high-energy materials: the initial chemical events in nitramine RDX

We extend the reactive force field ReaxFF to describe the high energy nitramine RDX and use it with molecular dynamics (MD) to study its shock-induced chemistry. We studied shock propagation via nonequilibrium MD simulations at various collision velocities. We find that for high impact velocities (>6 km/s) the RDX molecules decompose and react to form a variety of small molecules in very short time scales (<3 ps). These products are consistent with those found experimentally at longer times. For lower velocities only NO2 is formed, also in agreement with experiments.

Caloric curves and energy fluctuations in the microcanonical liquid-Gas phase transition

In this paper we study a microcanonical lattice gas model with a constrained average volume. We show that the caloric curve explicitly depends on the considered transformation of the volume with the excitation energy and so does not bear direct information on the characteristics of the phase transition. Conversely, partial energy fluctuations are demonstrated to be a direct measure of the equation of state. Since the heat capacity has a negative branch in the phase transition region, the presence of abnormally large kinetic energy fluctuations is a signal of the liquid-gas phase transition.
