Observation of coherent Smith-Purcell radiation from short-bunched electrons

Engineering tunable terahertz radiation from an electron bunch using graphene metasurfaces

We propose an approach to generate tunable terahertz (THz) radiation from an electron bunch passing over the unique graphene metasurface. We not only control the frequency of the THz radiation but also tune the amplitude and direction of the radiation by varying the chemical potential of the graphene. Several new phenomena are observed. The radiation has the same frequency with the resonant frequency of the graphene metasurface at normal incidence. The radiation frequency meets the linear relationship with the chemical potential. The radiation magnitude is the inverse to the reflection magnitude, and the sum of them is close to being a constant. The strong Smith-Purcell radiation on the graphene metasurface is due to the interaction between the electron bunch and periodic surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The stronger the SPP, the higher is the radiation magnitude that is obtained. These results would provide a promising way for developing tunable radiation in the THz band.

Inverse-Designed Narrowband THz Radiator for Ultrarelativistic Electrons

THz radiation finds various applications in science and technology. Pump-probe experiments at free-electron lasers typically rely on THz radiation generated by optical rectification of ultrafast laser pulses in electro-optic crystals. A compact and cost-efficient alternative is offered by the Smith-Purcell effect: a charged particle beam passes a periodic structure and generates synchronous radiation. Here, we employ the technique of photonic inverse design to optimize a structure for Smith-Purcell radiation at a single wavelength from ultrarelativistic electrons. The resulting design is highly resonant and emits narrowbandly. Experiments with a 3D-printed model for a wavelength of 900 μm show coherent enhancement. The versatility of inverse design offers a simple adaption of the structure to other electron energies or radiation wavelengths. This approach could advance beam-based THz generation for a wide range of applications.

First demonstration of coherent resonant backward diffraction radiation for a quasi-monochromatic terahertz-light source

We proposed coherent resonant backward diffraction radiation (CRBDR), which generates wavelength-tunable quasi-monochromatic lights using a compact diffractor assembly in an accelerator facility of high-energy electron beams, as a unique intense terahertz (THz) light source. Superimposing the coherent backward diffracted radiation emitted by periodically arranged hollow diffractors, it is possible to amplify the frequency components satisfying a resonant condition, and make the radiation monochromatic. We demonstrated the CRBDR using the L-band linac at the Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science at Kyoto University. It was observed that the coherent backward diffraction radiation was amplified more than three times at a frequency which was the fundamental resonant frequency in the CRBDR theory. Moreover, the number of diffractors at the saturation of the radiation power was consistent with the number estimated from the electron distribution in a bunch. The experimental results show that the CRBDR is useful as a quasi-monochromatic light source in the THz band.

Analysis of Smith-Purcell free-electron lasers

We present an analysis of the beam dynamics in a Smith-Purcell free-electron laser (FEL). In this system, an electron beam interacts resonantly with a copropagating surface electromagnetic mode near the grating surface. The surface mode arises as a singularity in the frequency dependence of the reflection matrix. Since the surface mode is confined very close to the grating surface, the interaction is significant only if the electrons are moving very close to the grating surface. The group velocity of the surface mode resonantly interacting with a low-energy electron beam is in the direction opposite to the electron beam. The Smith-Purcell FEL is therefore a backward wave oscillator in which, if the beam current exceeds a certain threshold known as start current, the optical intensity grows to saturation even if no mirrors are employed for feedback. We derive the coupled Maxwell-Lorentz equations for describing the interaction between the surface mode and the electron beam, starting from the slowly varying approximation and the singularity in the reflection matrix. In the linear regime, we derive an analytic expression for the start current and calculate the growth rate of optical power in time. The analysis is extended to the nonlinear regime by performing a one-dimensional time-dependent numerical simulation. Results of our numerical calculation compare well with the analytic calculation in the linear regime and show saturation behavior in the nonlinear regime. We find that a significant amount of power grows in the surface mode due to this interaction. Several ways to outcouple this power to freely propagating modes are discussed.

Observation of optical Smith-Purcell radiation at an electron beam energy of 855 MeV

Smith-Purcell radiation, generated when a beam of charged particles passes close to the surface of a diffraction grating, has been studied in the visible spectral range at wavelengths of 360 and 546 nm with the low emittance 855 MeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The beam focused to a spot size of 4 microm (full width at half maximum) passed over optical diffraction gratings of echelle profiles with blaze angles of 0.8 degrees, 17.27 degrees, and 41.12 degrees and grating periods of 0.833 and 9.09 microm. Taking advantage of the specific emission characteristics of Smith-Purcell radiation a clear separation from background components, such as diffracted synchrotron radiation from upstream beam optical elements and transition radiation, was possible. The intensity scales with a modified Bessel function of the first kind as a function of the distance between electron beam and grating surface. Experimental radiation factors have been determined and compared with calculations on the basis of Van den Berg's theory [P.M. Van den Berg, J. Opt. Soc. Am. 63, 689 (1973)]. Fair agreement has been found for gratings with large blaze angles while the measurement with the shallow grating (blaze angle 0.8 degrees ) is at variance with this theory. Finally, the optimal operational parameters of a Smith-Purcell radiation source in view of already existing powerful undulator sources are discussed.

Observation of coherent cerenkov radiation from a solid dielectric with short bunches of electrons

Short bunches of 150-MeV electrons of a linear accelerator passed along the surface of a crystal quartz or a teflon and coherent Cerenkov radiation from the solid dielectrics has been observed in the wavelength range from 0.5 to 4 mm. Properties of the radiation have been experimentally investigated. The angular distribution of the observed radiation showed a maximum peak in the direction of the Cerenkov angle with several satellite peaks. The intensity increased linearly with increasing the length of the medium and was proportional to the square of the number of electrons in the bunch. The spectral intensity was enhanced by almost five orders of magnitude in comparison with the theoretical calculation of incoherent radiation.
