Characterization of polybutadiene-poly(ethyleneoxide) aggregates in aqueous solution: a light-scattering and small-angle neutron-scattering study

Form factor of asymmetric elongated micelles: playing with Russian dolls has never been so informative

Scattering techniques (i.e., static light scattering, small angle neutron scattering,11 or small angle X-ray scattering) are excellent tools to study nanoscopic objects in solution. However, to interpret the experimental data, one needs to use the appropriate form factor. While recent progress has been made in the writing of form factors for complex structures, there is still a need to develop a method to evaluate the form factor of inhomogeneous elongated scatterers. Here, we propose an approach based on the principle of "Russian dolls". Multiblock rods are represented as multi generations of rods (mother, daughter, granddaughter, etc.), where each rod is nested within the rod of the previous generation, like Russian dolls. A shift parameter is used to introduce asymmetry in the rod along its long axis. This approach not only allowed us to write the form factor of multiblock rods, but it also gave us the possibility to account for the polydispersity in length of each block and of the shift parameter. Finally, we applied these equations to the case of a series of solutions of triblock comicelles slightly polydisperse in length.

Patchy worm-like micelles: solution structure studied by small-angle neutron scattering

Triblock terpolymers exhibit a rich self-organization behavior including the formation of fascinating cylindrical core-shell structures with a phase separated corona. After crystallization-induced self-assembly of polystyrene-block-polyethylene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) triblock terpolymers (abbreviated as SEMs = Styrene-Ethylene-Methacrylates) from solution, worm-like core-shell micelles with a patchy corona of polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) were observed by transmission electron microscopy. However, the solution structure is still a matter of debate. Here, we present a method to distinguish in situ between a Janus-type (two faced) and a patchy (multiple compartments) configuration of the corona. To discriminate between both models the scattering intensity must be determined mainly by one corona compartment. Contrast variation in small-angle neutron scattering enables us to focus on one compartment of the worm-like micelles. The results validate the existence of the patchy structure also in solution.

Properties of pH-responsive mixed aggregates of polystyrene-block-poly(L-lysine) and nonionic surfactant in solution and adsorbed at a solid surface

Poly(styrene) 388- block-poly( l-lysine) 138 could be dispersed in water with the aid of the nonionic surfactant C 12E 6. Light scattering and direct imaging techniques show that the copolymer/surfactant aggregates are polydisperse spherical micelles. The rather broad size distribution can be attributed to the glassy state of the polystyrene core of the micelles hampering equilibration. Nevertheless, the poly( l-lysine) block remains pH sensitive in these mixed aggregates and circular dichroism measurements show that poly( l-lysine) block adopts a random coil conformation at low pH and an beta-sheet conformation at pH > or = 11 without any change in the micellar shape. Samples prepared by evaporation of drops of the solutions on graphite wafers exhibit different wetting patterns depending on the polypeptide conformation as indicated by atomic force microscopy.

Characterization of superlighting polymer-DNA aggregates: a fluorescence and light scattering study

The massive amplification of fluorescence signal observed upon hybridization of as few as five DNA molecules into self-assembled structures formed between a cationic polymer and DNA oligonucleotides is investigated. These superlighting polymer-DNA aggregates were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy, static and dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential measurements in order to characterize the aggregation behavior and to understand the processes involved during DNA detection. Multi-angle laser light scattering was also used to obtain the weight-average aggregate mass (AM), the aggregation number (Nagg), the radius of gyration (Rg), and the dissymmetry ratio (z). These results have been used, together with TEM imaging, to propose a suitable physical model for the aggregates.
