Localized states in the generalized Swift-Hohenberg equation

Stationary broken parity states in active matter models

We demonstrate that several nonvariational continuum models commonly used to describe active matter as well as other active systems exhibit nongeneric behavior: each model supports asymmetric but stationary localized states even in the absence of pinning at heterogeneities. Moreover, such states only begin to drift following a drift-transcritical bifurcation as the activity increases. Asymmetric stationary states should only exist in variational systems, i.e., in models with gradient structure. In other words, such states are expected in passive systems, but not in active systems where the gradient structure of the model is broken by activity. We identify a "spurious" gradient dynamics structure of these models that is responsible for this nongeneric behavior, and determine the types of additional terms that render the models generic, i.e., with asymmetric states that appear via drift-pitchfork bifurcations and are generically moving. We provide detailed illustrations of our results using numerical continuation of resting and steadily drifting states in both generic and nongeneric cases.

Collisions of localized patterns in a nonvariational Swift-Hohenberg equation

The cubic-quintic Swift-Hohenberg equation (SH35) has been proposed as an order parameter description of several convective systems with reflection symmetry in the layer midplane, including binary fluid convection. We use numerical continuation, together with extensive direct numerical simulations (DNSs), to study SH35 with an additional nonvariational quadratic term to model the effects of breaking the midplane reflection symmetry. The nonvariational structure of the model leads to the propagation of asymmetric spatially localized structures (LSs). An asymptotic prediction for the drift velocity of such structures, derived in the limit of weak symmetry breaking, is validated numerically. Next, we present an extensive study of possible collision scenarios between identical and nonidentical traveling structures, varying a temperaturelike control parameter. These collisions are inelastic and result in stationary or traveling structures. Depending on system parameters and the types of structures colliding, the final state may be a simple bound state of the initial LSs, but it can also be longer or shorter than the sum of the two initial states as a result of nonlinear interactions. The Maxwell point of the variational system, where the free energy of the global pattern state equals that of the trivial state, is shown to have no bearing on which of these scenarios is realized. Instead, we argue that the stability properties of bound states are key. While individual LSs lie on a modified snakes-and-ladders structure in the nonvariational SH35, the multipulse bound states resulting from collisions lie on isolas in parameter space, disconnected from the trivial solution. In the gradient SH35, such isolas are always of figure-eight shape, but in the present nongradient case they are generically more complex, although the figure-eight shape is preserved in a small subset of cases. Some of these complex isolas are shown to terminate in T-point bifurcations. A reduced model is proposed to describe the interactions between the tails of the LSs. The model consists of two coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs) capturing the oscillatory nature of SH35 profiles at the linear level. It contains three parameters: two interaction amplitudes and a phase, whose values are deduced from high-resolution DNSs using gradient descent optimization. For collisions leading to the formation of simple bound states, the reduced model reproduces the trajectories of LSs with high quantitative accuracy. When nonlinear interactions lead to the creation or deletion of wavelengths, the model performs less well. Finally, we propose an effective signature of a given interaction in terms of net attraction or repulsion relative to free propagation. It is found that interactions can be attractive or repulsive in the net, irrespective of whether the two closest interacting extrema are of the same or opposite signs. Our findings highlight the rich temporal dynamics described by this bistable nonvariational SH35, and show that the interactions in this system can be quantitatively captured, to a significant extent, by a highly reduced ODE model.

Front propagation and global bifurcations in a multivariable reaction-diffusion model

We study the existence and stability of propagating fronts in Meinhardt's multivariable reaction-diffusion model of branching in one spatial dimension. We identify a saddle-node-infinite-period bifurcation of fronts that leads to episodic front propagation in the parameter region below propagation failure and show that this state is stable. Stable constant speed fronts exist only above this parameter value. We use numerical continuation to show that propagation failure is a consequence of the presence of a T-point corresponding to the formation of a heteroclinic cycle in a spatial dynamics description. Additional T-points are identified that are responsible for a large multiplicity of different unstable traveling front-peak states. The results indicate that multivariable models may support new types of behavior that are absent from typical two-variable models but may nevertheless be important in developmental processes such as branching and somitogenesis.

Solitary-like and modulated wavepackets in the Couette-Taylor flow with a radial temperature gradient

We have performed numerical and experimental studies of the flow in a large aspect ratio Couette-Taylor system with a rotating inner cylinder and a fixed radial temperature gradient. The base flow state is a superposition of an azimuthal flow induced by rotation and an axial large convective cell induced by the temperature gradient. For a relatively large temperature gradient, the rotation rate of the inner cylinder destabilizes the convective cell to give rise to travelling wave pattern through a subcritical bifurcation. This wave pattern is associated with a temperature mode and it consists of helical vortices travelling in the annulus. In a small range of the rotation rate, helical vortices have longitudinal meandering leading to the formation of kinks randomly distributed, leading to spatio-temporal disordered patterns. The flow becomes regular for a large interval of rotation rate. The friction, the momentum and the heat transfer coefficients are computed and found to be independent of the heating direction. Instability mechanisms of repelling peak solutions in a multi-variable activator-inhibitor system

We study the linear stability properties of spatially localized single- and multi-peak states generated in a subcritical Turing bifurcation in the Meinhardt model of branching. In one spatial dimension, these states are organized in a foliated snaking structure owing to peak-peak repulsion but are shown to be all linearly unstable, with the number of unstable modes increasing with the number of peaks present. Despite this, in two spatial dimensions, direct numerical simulations reveal the presence of stable single- and multi-spot states whose properties depend on the repulsion from nearby spots as well as the shape of the domain and the boundary conditions imposed thereon. Front propagation is shown to trigger the growth of new spots while destabilizing others. The results indicate that multi-variable models may support new types of behavior that are absent from typical two-variable models.

Exploring bifurcations in Bose-Einstein condensates via phase field crystal models

To facilitate the analysis of pattern formation and the related phase transitions in Bose-Einstein condensates, we present an explicit approximate mapping from the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation with cubic nonlinearity to a phase field crystal (PFC) model. This approximation is valid close to the superfluid-supersolid phase transition boundary. The simplified PFC model permits the exploration of bifurcations and phase transitions via numerical path continuation employing standard software. While revealing the detailed structure of the bifurcations present in the system, we demonstrate the existence of localized states in the PFC approximation. Finally, we discuss how higher-order nonlinearities change the structure of the bifurcation diagram representing the transitions found in the system.

Two-dimensional localized states in an active phase-field-crystal model

The active phase-field-crystal (active PFC) model provides a simple microscopic mean field description of crystallization in active systems. It combines the PFC model (or conserved Swift-Hohenberg equation) of colloidal crystallization and aspects of the Toner-Tu theory for self-propelled particles. We employ the active PFC model to study the occurrence of localized and periodic active crystals in two spatial dimensions. Due to the activity, crystalline states can undergo a drift instability and start to travel while keeping their spatial structure. Based on linear stability analyses, time simulations, and numerical continuation of the fully nonlinear states, we present a detailed analysis of the bifurcation structure of resting and traveling states. We explore, for instance, how the slanted homoclinic snaking of steady localized states found for the passive PFC model is modified by activity. Morphological phase diagrams showing the regions of existence of various solution types are presented merging the results from all the analysis tools employed. We also study how activity influences the crystal structure with transitions from hexagons to rhombic and stripe patterns. This in-depth analysis of a simple PFC model for active crystals and swarm formation provides a clear general understanding of the observed multistability and associated hysteresis effects, and identifies thresholds for qualitative changes in behavior.

Efficient calculation of phase coexistence and phase diagrams: application to a binary phase-field-crystal model

We show that one can employ well-established numerical continuation methods to efficiently calculate the phase diagram for thermodynamic systems described by a suitable free energy functional. In particular, this involves the determination of lines of phase coexistence related to first order phase transitions and the continuation of triple points. To illustrate the method we apply it to a binary phase-field-crystal model for the crystallisation of a mixture of two types of particles. The resulting phase diagram is determined for one- and two-dimensional domains. In the former case it is compared to the diagram obtained from a one-mode approximation. The various observed liquid and crystalline phases and their stable and metastable coexistence are discussed as well as the temperature-dependence of the phase diagrams. This includes the (dis)appearance of critical points and triple points. We also relate bifurcation diagrams for finite-size systems to the thermodynamics of phase transitions in the infinite-size limit.

Nonlinear waves in a quintic FitzHugh-Nagumo model with cross diffusion: Fronts, pulses, and wave trains

We study a tristable piecewise-linear reaction-diffusion system, which approximates a quintic FitzHugh-Nagumo model, with linear cross-diffusion terms of opposite signs. Basic nonlinear waves with oscillatory tails, namely, fronts, pulses, and wave trains, are described. The analytical construction of these waves is based on the results for the bistable case [Zemskov et al., Phys. Rev. E 77, 036219 (2008) and Phys. Rev. E 95, 012203 (2017) for fronts and for pulses and wave trains, respectively]. In addition, these constructions allow us to describe novel waves that are specific to the tristable system. Most interesting is the pulse solution with a zigzag-shaped profile, the bright-dark pulse, in analogy with optical solitons of similar shapes. Numerical simulations indicate that this wave can be stable in the system with asymmetric thresholds; there are no stable bright-dark pulses when the thresholds are symmetric. In the latter case, the pulse splits up into a tristable front and a bistable one that propagate with different speeds. This phenomenon is related to a specific feature of the wave behavior in the tristable system, the multiwave regime of propagation, i.e., the coexistence of several waves with different profile shapes and propagation speeds at the same values of the model parameters.

Phase-field-crystal description of active crystallites: Elastic and inelastic collisions

The active Phase-Field-Crystal (aPFC) model combines elements of the Toner-Tu theory for self-propelled particles and the classical Phase-Field-Crystal (PFC) model that describes the transition between liquid and crystalline phases. In the liquid-crystal coexistence region of the PFC model, crystalline clusters exist in the form of localized states that coexist with a homogeneous background. At sufficiently strong activity (related to self-propulsion strength), they start to travel. We employ numerical path continuation and direct time simulations to first investigate the existence regions of different types of localized states in one spatial dimension. The results are summarized in morphological phase diagrams in the parameter plane spanned by activity and mean density. Then we focus on the interaction of traveling localized states, studying their collision behavior. As a result, we distinguish "elastic" and "inelastic" collisions. In the former, localized states recover their properties after a collision, while in the latter, they may completely or partially annihilate, forming resting bound states or various traveling states.

Adaptive stochastic continuation with a modified lifting procedure applied to complex systems

Many complex systems occurring in the natural or social sciences or economics are frequently described on a microscopic level, e.g., by lattice- or agent-based models. To analyze the states of such systems and their bifurcation structure on the level of macroscopic observables, one has to rely on equation-free methods like stochastic continuation. Here we investigate how to improve stochastic continuation techniques by adaptively choosing the parameters of the algorithm. This allows one to obtain bifurcation diagrams quite accurately, especially near bifurcation points. We introduce lifting techniques which generate microscopic states with a naturally grown structure, which can be crucial for a reliable evaluation of macroscopic quantities. We show how to calculate fixed points of fluctuating functions by employing suitable linear fits. This procedure offers a simple measure of the statistical error. We demonstrate these improvements by applying the approach in analyses of (i) the Ising model in two dimensions, (ii) an active Ising model, and (iii) a stochastic Swift-Hohenberg model. We conclude by discussing the abilities and remaining problems of the technique.

Chaotic motion of localized structures

Mobility properties of spatially localized structures arising from chaotic but deterministic forcing of the bistable Swift-Hohenberg equation are studied and compared with the corresponding results when the chaotic forcing is replaced by white noise. Short structures are shown to possess greater mobility, resulting in larger root-mean-square speeds but shorter displacements than longer structures. Averaged over realizations, the displacement of the structure is ballistic at short times but diffusive at larger times. Similar results hold in two spatial dimensions. The effects of chaotic forcing on the stability of these structures is also quantified. Shorter structures are found to be more fragile than longer ones, and their stability region can be displaced outside the pinning region for constant forcing. Outside the stability region the deterministic fluctuations lead either to the destruction of the structure or to its gradual growth.

A dot-stripe Turing model of joint patterning in the tetrapod limb

Iterative joints are a hallmark of the tetrapod limb, and their positioning is a key step during limb development. Although the molecular regulation of joint formation is well studied, it remains unclear what controls the location, number and orientation (i.e. the pattern) of joints within each digit. Here, we propose the dot-stripe mechanism for joint patterning, comprising two coupled Turing systems inspired by published gene expression patterns. Our model can explain normal joint morphology in wild-type limbs, hyperphalangy in cetacean flippers, mutant phenotypes with misoriented joints and suggests a reinterpretation of the polydactylous Ichthyosaur fins as a polygonal joint lattice. By formulating a generic dot-stripe model, describing joint patterns rather than molecular joint markers, we demonstrate that the insights from the model should apply regardless of the biological specifics of the underlying mechanism, thus providing a unifying framework to interrogate joint patterning in the tetrapod limb.

Origin of localized snakes-and-ladders solutions of plane Couette flow

Spatially localized invariant solutions of plane Couette flow are organized in a snakes-and-ladders structure strikingly similar to that observed for simpler pattern-forming partial differential equations [Schneider, Gibson, and Burke, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 104501 (2010)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.104.104501]. We demonstrate the mechanism by which these snaking solutions originate from well-known periodic states of the Taylor-Couette system. They are formed by a localized slug of wavy-vortex flow that emerges from a background of Taylor vortices via a modulational sideband instability. This mechanism suggests a close connection between pattern-formation theory and Navier-Stokes flow.

Role of Gaussian curvature on local equilibrium and dynamics of smectic-isotropic interfaces

Recent research on interfacial instabilities of smectic films has shown unexpected morphologies that are not fully explained by classical local equilibrium thermodynamics. Annealing focal conic domains can lead to conical pyramids, changing the sign of the Gaussian curvature and exposing smectic layers at the interface. In order to explore the role of the Gaussian curvature on the stability and evolution of the film-vapor interface, we introduce a phase-field model of a smectic-isotropic system as a first step in the study. Through asymptotic analysis of the model, we generalize the classical condition of local equilibrium, the Gibbs-Thomson equation, to include contributions from surface bending and torsion and a dependence on the layer orientation at the interface. A full numerical solution of the phase-field model is then used to study the evolution of focal conic structures in smectic domains in contact with the isotropic phase via local evaporation and condensation of smectic layers. As in experiments, numerical solutions show that pyramidal structures emerge near the center of the focal conic owing to evaporation of adjacent smectic planes and to their orientation relative to the interface. Near the center of the focal conic domain, a correct description of the motion of the interface requires the additional curvature terms obtained in the asymptotic analysis, thus clarifying the limitations in modeling motion of hyperbolic surfaces solely driven by mean curvature.

Defectlike structures and localized patterns in the cubic-quintic-septic Swift-Hohenberg equation

We study numerically the cubic-quintic-septic Swift-Hohenberg (SH357) equation on bounded one-dimensional domains. Under appropriate conditions stripes with wave number k≈1 bifurcate supercritically from the zero state and form S-shaped branches resulting in bistability between small and large amplitude stripes. Within this bistability range we find stationary heteroclinic connections or fronts between small and large amplitude stripes, and demonstrate that the associated spatially localized defectlike structures either snake or fall on isolas. In other parameter regimes we also find heteroclinic connections to spatially homogeneous states and a multitude of dynamically stable steady states consisting of patches of small and large amplitude stripes with different wave numbers or of spatially homogeneous patches. The SH357 equation is thus extremely rich in the types of patterns it exhibits. Some of the features of the bifurcation diagrams obtained by numerical continuation can be understood using a conserved quantity, the spatial Hamiltonian of the system.

Front depinning by deterministic and stochastic fluctuations: A comparison

Driven dissipative many-body systems are described by differential equations for macroscopic variables which include fluctuations that account for ignored microscopic variables. Here, we investigate the effect of deterministic fluctuations, drawn from a system in a state of phase turbulence, on front dynamics. We show that despite these fluctuations a front may remain pinned, in contrast to fronts in systems with Gaussian white noise fluctuations, and explore the pinning-depinning transition. In the deterministic case, this transition is found to be robust but its location in parameter space is complex, generating a fractal-like structure. We describe this transition by deriving an equation for the front position, which takes the form of an overdamped system with a ratchet potential and chaotic forcing; this equation can, in turn, be transformed into a linear parametrically driven oscillator with a chaotically oscillating frequency. The resulting description provides an unambiguous characterization of the pinning-depinning transition in parameter space. A similar calculation for noise-driven front propagation shows that the pinning-depinning transition is washed out.

Fluid-supported elastic sheet under compression: Multifold solutions

The properties of a hinged floating elastic sheet of finite length under compression are considered. Numerical continuation is used to compute spatially localized buckled states with many spatially localized folds. Both symmetric and antisymmetric states are computed and the corresponding bifurcation diagrams determined. Weakly nonlinear analysis is used to analyze the transition from periodic wrinkles to singlefold and multifold states and to compute their energy. States with the same number of folds have energies that barely differ from each other and the energy gap decreases exponentially as localization increases. The stability of the different competing states is studied and the multifold solutions are all found to be unstable. However, the decay time into solutions with fewer folds can be so slow that multifolds may appear to be stable.

Dynamics of the Desai-Zwanzig model in multiwell and random energy landscapes

We analyze a variant of the Desai-Zwanzig model [J. Stat. Phys. 19, 1 (1978)JSTPBS0022-471510.1007/BF01020331]. In particular, we study stationary states of the mean field limit for a system of weakly interacting diffusions moving in a multiwell potential energy landscape, coupled via a Curie-Weiss type (quadratic) interaction potential. The location and depth of the local minima of the potential are either deterministic or random. We characterize the structure and nature of bifurcations and phase transitions for this system, by means of extensive numerical simulations and of analytical calculations for an explicitly solvable model. Our numerical experiments are based on Monte Carlo simulations, the numerical solution of the time-dependent nonlinear Fokker-Planck (McKean-Vlasov) equation, the minimization of the free-energy functional, and a continuation algorithm for the stationary solutions.

Spatially localized structures in the Gray-Scott model

Spatially localized structures in the one-dimensional Gray-Scott reaction-diffusion model are studied using a combination of numerical continuation techniques and weakly nonlinear theory, focusing on the regime in which the activator and substrate diffusivities are different but comparable. Localized states arise in three different ways: in a subcritical Turing instability present in this regime, and from folds in the branch of spatially periodic Turing states. They also arise from the fold of spatially uniform states. These three solution branches interconnect in complex ways. We use numerical continuation techniques to explore their global behaviour within a formulation of the model that has been used to describe dryland vegetation patterns on a flat terrain.This article is part of the theme issue 'Dissipative structures in matter out of equilibrium: from chemistry, photonics and biology (part 2)'.

Resting and traveling localized states in an active phase-field-crystal model

The conserved Swift-Hohenberg equation (or phase-field-crystal [PFC] model) provides a simple microscopic description of the thermodynamic transition between fluid and crystalline states. Combining it with elements of the Toner-Tu theory for self-propelled particles, Menzel and Löwen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 055702 (2013)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.110.055702] obtained a model for crystallization (swarm formation) in active systems. Here, we study the occurrence of resting and traveling localized states, i.e., crystalline clusters, within the resulting active PFC model. Based on linear stability analyses and numerical continuation of the fully nonlinear states, we present a detailed analysis of the bifurcation structure of periodic and localized, resting and traveling states in a one-dimensional active PFC model. This allows us, for instance, to explore how the slanted homoclinic snaking of steady localized states found for the passive PFC model is amended by activity. A particular focus lies on the onset of motion, where we show that it occurs either through a drift-pitchfork or a drift-transcritical bifurcation. A corresponding general analytical criterion is derived.

Snakes and ghosts in a parity-time-symmetric chain of dimers

We consider linearly coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations with gain and loss terms and with a cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The system models a parity-time (PT)-symmetric coupler composed by a chain of dimers. We study uniform states and site-centered and bond-centered spatially localized solutions and present that each solution has a symmetric and antisymmetric configuration between the arms. The symmetric solutions can become unstable due to bifurcations of asymmetric ones, that are called ghost states, because they exist only when an otherwise real propagation constant is taken to be complex valued. When a parameter is varied, the resulting bifurcation diagrams for the existence of standing localized solutions have a snaking behavior. The critical gain and loss coefficient above which the PT symmetry is broken corresponds to the condition when bifurcation diagrams of symmetric and antisymmetric states merge. Past the symmetry breaking, the system no longer has time-independent states. Nevertheless, equilibrium solutions can be analytically continued by defining a dual equation that leads to ghost states associated with growth or decay, that are also identified and examined here. We show that ghost localized states also exhibit snaking bifurcation diagrams. We analyze the width of the snaking region and provide asymptotic approximations in the limit of strong and weak coupling where good agreement is obtained.

Tristability between stripes, up-hexagons, and down-hexagons and snaking bifurcation branches of spatial connections between up- and down-hexagons

Third-order amplitude equations on hexagonal lattices can be used for predicting the existence and stability of stripes, up-hexagons, and down-hexagons in pattern-forming systems. These amplitude equations predict the nonexistence of bistable ranges between up- and down-hexagons and tristable ranges between stripes, up-, and down-hexagons. In the present work we use fifth-order amplitude equations for finding such bistable and tristable ranges for a generalized Swift-Hohenberg equation and discuss stationary front connections between up- and down-hexagons.

Connection between nonlinear energy optimization and instantons

How systems transit between different stable states under external perturbation is an important practical issue. We discuss here how a recently developed energy optimization method for identifying the minimal disturbance necessary to reach the basin boundary of a stable state is connected to the instanton trajectory from large deviation theory of noisy systems. In the context of the one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation, which has multiple stable equilibria, we first show how the energy optimization method can be straightforwardly used to identify minimal disturbances-minimal seeds-for transition to specific attractors from the ground state. Then, after generalizing the technique to consider multiple, equally spaced-in-time perturbations, it is shown that the instanton trajectory is indeed the solution of the energy optimization method in the limit of infinitely many perturbations provided a specific norm is used to measure the set of discrete perturbations. Importantly, we find that the key features of the instanton can be captured by a low number of discrete perturbations (typically one perturbation per basin of attraction crossed). This suggests a promising new diagnostic for systems for which it may be impractical to calculate the instanton.

Bifurcation structure of localized states in the Lugiato-Lefever equation with anomalous dispersion

The origin, stability, and bifurcation structure of different types of bright localized structures described by the Lugiato-Lefever equation are studied. This mean field model describes the nonlinear dynamics of light circulating in fiber cavities and microresonators. In the case of anomalous group velocity dispersion and low values of the intracavity phase detuning these bright states are organized in a homoclinic snaking bifurcation structure. We describe how this bifurcation structure is destroyed when the detuning is increased across a critical value, and determine how a bifurcation structure known as foliated snaking emerges.

Implications of tristability in pattern-forming ecosystems

Many ecosystems show both self-organized spatial patterns and multistability of possible states. The combination of these two phenomena in different forms has a significant impact on the behavior of ecosystems in changing environments. One notable case is connected to tristability of two distinct uniform states together with patterned states, which has recently been found in model studies of dryland ecosystems. Using a simple model, we determine the extent of tristability in parameter space, explore its effects on the system dynamics, and consider its implications for state transitions or regime shifts. We analyze the bifurcation structure of model solutions that describe uniform states, periodic patterns, and hybrid states between the former two. We map out the parameter space where these states exist, and note how the different states interact with each other. We further focus on two special implications with ecological significance, breakdown of the snaking range and complex fronts. We find that the organization of the hybrid states within a homoclinic snaking structure breaks down as it meets a Maxwell point where simple fronts are stationary. We also discover a new series of complex fronts between the uniform states, each with its own velocity. We conclude with a brief discussion of the significance of these findings for the dynamics of regime shifts and their potential control.

Homoclinic snaking in the discrete Swift-Hohenberg equation

We consider the discrete Swift-Hohenberg equation with cubic and quintic nonlinearity, obtained from discretizing the spatial derivatives of the Swift-Hohenberg equation using central finite differences. We investigate the discretization effect on the bifurcation behavior, where we identify three regions of the coupling parameter, i.e., strong, weak, and intermediate coupling. Within the regions, the discrete Swift-Hohenberg equation behaves either similarly or differently from the continuum limit. In the intermediate coupling region, multiple Maxwell points can occur for the periodic solutions and may cause irregular snaking and isolas. Numerical continuation is used to obtain and analyze localized and periodic solutions for each case. Theoretical analysis for the snaking and stability of the corresponding solutions is provided in the weak coupling region.

Delay-induced depinning of localized structures in a spatially inhomogeneous Swift-Hohenberg model

We report on the dynamics of localized structures in an inhomogeneous Swift-Hohenberg model describing pattern formation in the transverse plane of an optical cavity. This real order parameter equation is valid close to the second-order critical point associated with bistability. The optical cavity is illuminated by an inhomogeneous spatial Gaussian pumping beam and subjected to time-delayed feedback. The Gaussian injection beam breaks the translational symmetry of the system by exerting an attracting force on the localized structure. We show that the localized structure can be pinned to the center of the inhomogeneity, suppressing the delay-induced drift bifurcation that has been reported in the particular case where the injection is homogeneous, assuming a continuous wave operation. Under an inhomogeneous spatial pumping beam, we perform the stability analysis of localized solutions to identify different instability regimes induced by time-delayed feedback. In particular, we predict the formation of two-arm spirals, as well as oscillating and depinning dynamics caused by the interplay of an attracting inhomogeneity and destabilizing time-delayed feedback. The transition from oscillating to depinning solutions is investigated by means of numerical continuation techniques. Analytically, we use an order parameter approach to derive a normal form of the delay-induced Hopf bifurcation leading to an oscillating solution. Additionally we model the interplay of an attracting inhomogeneity and destabilizing time delay by describing the localized solution as an overdamped particle in a potential well generated by the inhomogeneity. In this case, the time-delayed feedback acts as a driving force. Comparing results from the later approach with the full Swift-Hohenberg model, we show that the approach not only provides an instructive description of the depinning dynamics, but also is numerically accurate throughout most of the parameter regime.

Chimera-type states induced by local coupling

Coupled oscillators can exhibit complex self-organization behavior such as phase turbulence, spatiotemporal intermittency, and chimera states. The latter corresponds to a coexistence of coherent and incoherent states apparently promoted by nonlocal or global coupling. Here we investigate the existence, stability properties, and bifurcation diagram of chimera-type states in a system with local coupling without different time scales. Based on a model of a chain of nonlinear oscillators coupled to adjacent neighbors, we identify the required attributes to observe these states: local coupling and bistability between a stationary and an oscillatory state close to a homoclinic bifurcation. The local coupling prevents the incoherent state from invading the coherent one, allowing concurrently the existence of a family of chimera states, which are organized by a homoclinic snaking bifurcation diagram.

Self-organization of network dynamics into local quantized states

Self-organization and pattern formation in network-organized systems emerges from the collective activation and interaction of many interconnected units. A striking feature of these non-equilibrium structures is that they are often localized and robust: only a small subset of the nodes, or cell assembly, is activated. Understanding the role of cell assemblies as basic functional units in neural networks and socio-technical systems emerges as a fundamental challenge in network theory. A key open question is how these elementary building blocks emerge, and how they operate, linking structure and function in complex networks. Here we show that a network analogue of the Swift-Hohenberg continuum model-a minimal-ingredients model of nodal activation and interaction within a complex network-is able to produce a complex suite of localized patterns. Hence, the spontaneous formation of robust operational cell assemblies in complex networks can be explained as the result of self-organization, even in the absence of synaptic reinforcements.

Competition between drift and spatial defects leads to oscillatory and excitable dynamics of dissipative solitons

We have reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 064103 (2013)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.110.064103 that in systems which otherwise do not show oscillatory dynamics, the interplay between pinning to a defect and pulling by drift allows the system to exhibit excitability and oscillations. Here we build on this work and present a detailed bifurcation analysis of the various dynamical instabilities that result from the competition between a pulling force generated by the drift and a pinning of the solitons to spatial defects. We show that oscillatory and excitable dynamics of dissipative solitons find their origin in multiple codimension-2 bifurcation points. Moreover, we demonstrate that the mechanisms leading to these dynamical regimes are generic for any system admitting dissipative solitons.

Localised pattern formation in a model for dryland vegetation

We analyse the model for vegetation growth in a semi-arid landscape proposed by von Hardenberg et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 87:198101, 2001), which consists of two parabolic partial differential equations that describe the evolution in space and time of the water content of the soil and the level of vegetation. This model is a generalisation of one proposed by Klausmeier but it contains additional terms that capture additional physical effects. By considering the limit in which the diffusion of water in the soil is much faster than the spread of vegetation, we reduce the system to an asymptotically simpler parabolic-elliptic system of equations that describes small amplitude instabilities of the uniform vegetated state. We carry out a thorough weakly nonlinear analysis to investigate bifurcations and pattern formation in the reduced model. We find that the pattern forming instabilities are subcritical except in a small region of parameter space. In the original model at large amplitude there are localised solutions, organised by homoclinic snaking curves. The resulting bifurcation structure is well known from other models for pattern forming systems. Taken together our results describe how the von Hardenberg model displays a sequence of (often hysteretic) transitions from a non-vegetated state, to localised patches of vegetation that exist with uniform low-level vegetation, to periodic patterns, to higher-level uniform vegetation as the precipitation parameter increases.

Rodlike localized structure in isotropic pattern-forming systems

Stationary two-dimensional localized structures have been observed in a wide variety of dissipative systems. The existence, stability properties, dynamical evolution, and bifurcation diagram of an azimuthal symmetry breaking, rodlike localized structure in the isotropic prototype model of pattern formation, the Swift-Hohenberg model, is studied. These rodlike structures persist under the presence of nongradient perturbations. Interaction properties of the rodlike structures are studied. This allows us to envisage the possibility of different crystal-like configurations.

Origin of finite pulse trains: Homoclinic snaking in excitable media

Many physical, chemical, and biological systems exhibit traveling waves as a result of either an oscillatory instability or excitability. In the latter case a large multiplicity of stable spatially localized wavetrains consisting of different numbers of traveling pulses may be present. The existence of these states is related here to the presence of homoclinic snaking in the vicinity of a subcritical, finite wavenumber Hopf bifurcation. The pulses are organized in a slanted snaking structure resulting from the presence of a heteroclinic cycle between small and large amplitude traveling waves. Connections of this type require a multivalued dispersion relation. This dispersion relation is computed numerically and used to interpret the profile of the pulse group. The different spatially localized pulse trains can be accessed by appropriately customized initial stimuli, thereby blurring the traditional distinction between oscillatory and excitable systems. The results reveal a new class of phenomena relevant to spatiotemporal dynamics of excitable media, particularly in chemical and biological systems with multiple activators and inhibitors.

Curvature-induced symmetry breaking determines elastic surface patterns

Symmetry-breaking transitions associated with the buckling and folding of curved multilayered surfaces-which are common to a wide range of systems and processes such as embryogenesis, tissue differentiation and structure formation in heterogeneous thin films or on planetary surfaces-have been characterized experimentally. Yet owing to the nonlinearity of the underlying stretching and bending forces, the transitions cannot be reliably predicted by current theoretical models. Here, we report a generalized Swift-Hohenberg theory that describes wrinkling morphology and pattern selection in curved elastic bilayer materials. By testing the theory against experiments on spherically shaped surfaces, we find quantitative agreement with analytical predictions for the critical curves separating labyrinth, hybrid and hexagonal phases. Furthermore, a comparison to earlier experiments suggests that the theory is universally applicable to macroscopic and microscopic systems. Our approach builds on general differential-geometry principles and can thus be extended to arbitrarily shaped surfaces.

Mathematically guided approaches to distinguish models of periodic patterning

How periodic patterns are generated is an open question. A number of mechanisms have been proposed--most famously, Turing's reaction-diffusion model. However, many theoretical and experimental studies focus on the Turing mechanism while ignoring other possible mechanisms. Here, we use a general model of periodic patterning to show that different types of mechanism (molecular, cellular, mechanical) can generate qualitatively similar final patterns. Observation of final patterns is therefore not sufficient to favour one mechanism over others. However, we propose that a mathematical approach can help to guide the design of experiments that can distinguish between different mechanisms, and illustrate the potential value of this approach with specific biological examples.

Localized states in periodically forced systems

The theory of stationary spatially localized patterns in dissipative systems driven by time-independent forcing is well developed. With time-periodic forcing, related but time-dependent structures may result. These may consist of breathing localized patterns, or states that grow for part of the cycle via nucleation of new wavelengths of the pattern followed by wavelength annihilation during the remainder of the cycle. These two competing processes lead to a complex phase diagram whose structure is a consequence of a series of resonances between the nucleation time and the forcing period. The resulting diagram is computed for the periodically forced quadratic-cubic Swift-Hohenberg equation, and its details are interpreted in terms of the properties of the depinning transition for the fronts bounding the localized state on either side. The results are expected to shed light on localized states in a large variety of periodically driven systems.

Subcritical Turing bifurcation and the morphogenesis of localized patterns

Subcritical Turing bifurcations of reaction-diffusion systems in large domains lead to spontaneous onset of well-developed localized patterns via the homoclinic snaking mechanism. This phenomenon is shown to occur naturally when balancing source and loss effects are included in a typical reaction-diffusion system, leading to a super- to subcritical transition. Implications are discussed [corrected]for a range of physical problems, arguing that subcriticality leads to naturally robust phase transitions to localized patterns.

Patterned deposition at moving contact lines

When a simple or complex liquid recedes from a smooth solid substrate it often leaves a homogeneous or structured deposit behind. In the case of a receding non-volatile pure liquid the deposit might be a liquid film or an arrangement of droplets depending on the receding speed of the meniscus and the wetting properties of the system. For complex liquids with volatile components as, e.g., polymer solutions and particle or surfactant suspensions, the deposit might be a homogeneous or structured layer of solute--with structures ranging from line patterns that can be orthogonal or parallel to the receding contact line via hexagonal or square arrangements of drops to complicated hierarchical structures. We review a number of recent experiments and modelling approaches with a particular focus on mesoscopic hydrodynamic long-wave models. The conclusion highlights open question and speculates about future developments.

Self-localized states in species competition

We study the conditions under which species interaction, as described by continuous versions of the competitive Lotka-Volterra model (namely the nonlocal Kolmogorov-Fisher model, and its differential approximation), can support the existence of localized states, i.e., patches of species with enhanced population surrounded in niche space by species at smaller densities. These states would arise from species interaction, and not by any preferred niche location or better fitness. In contrast to previous works we include only quadratic nonlinearities, so that the localized patches appear on a background of homogeneously distributed species coexistence, instead of on top of the no-species empty state. For the differential model we find and describe in detail the stable localized states. For the full nonlocal model, however, competitive interactions alone do not allow the conditions for the observation of self-localized states, and we show how the inclusion of additional facilitative interactions leads to the appearance of them.

Transitions between patterned states in vegetation models for semiarid ecosystems

A feature common to many models of vegetation pattern formation in semiarid ecosystems is a sequence of qualitatively different patterned states, "gaps → labyrinth → spots," that occurs as a parameter representing precipitation decreases. We explore the robustness of this "standard" sequence in the generic setting of a bifurcation problem on a hexagonal lattice, as well as in a particular reaction-diffusion model for vegetation pattern formation. Specifically, we consider a degeneracy of the bifurcation equations that creates a small bubble in parameter space in which stable small-amplitude patterned states may exist near two Turing bifurcations. Pattern transitions between these bifurcation points can then be analyzed in a weakly nonlinear framework. We find that a number of transition scenarios besides the standard sequence are generically possible, which calls into question the reliability of any particular pattern or sequence as a precursor to vegetation collapse. Additionally, we find that clues to the robustness of the standard sequence lie in the nonlinear details of a particular model.

Formation of localized structures in bistable systems through nonlocal spatial coupling. I. General framework

The present work studies the influence of nonlocal spatial coupling on the existence of localized structures in one-dimensional extended systems. We consider systems described by a real field with a nonlocal coupling that has a linear dependence on the field. Leveraging spatial dynamics we provide a general framework to understand the effect of the nonlocality on the shape of the fronts connecting two stable states. In particular we show that nonlocal terms can induce spatial oscillations in the front tails, allowing for the creation of localized structures, that emerge from pinning between two fronts. In parameter space the region where fronts are oscillatory is limited by three transitions: the modulational instability of the homogeneous state, the Belyakov-Devaney transition in which monotonic fronts acquire spatial oscillations with infinite wavelength, and a crossover in which monotonically decaying fronts develop spatial oscillations with a finite wavelength. We show how these transitions are organized by codimension 2 and 3 points and illustrate how by changing the parameters of the nonlocal coupling it is possible to bring the system into the region where localized structures can be formed.

Spatial localization in heterogeneous systems

We study spatial localization in the generalized Swift-Hohenberg equation with either quadratic-cubic or cubic-quintic nonlinearity subject to spatially heterogeneous forcing. Different types of forcing (sinusoidal or Gaussian) with different spatial scales are considered and the corresponding localized snaking structures are computed. The results indicate that spatial heterogeneity exerts a significant influence on the location of spatially localized structures in both parameter space and physical space, and on their stability properties. The results are expected to assist in the interpretation of experiments on localized structures where departures from spatial homogeneity are generally unavoidable.

Self-organization and nanostructure formation in chemical vapor deposition

When thin films are grown on a substrate by chemical vapor deposition, the evolution of the first deposited layers may be described, on mesoscopic scales, by dynamical models of the reaction-diffusion type. For monatomic layers, such models describe the evolution of atomic coverage due to the combined effect of reaction terms representing adsorption-desorption and chemical processes and nonlinear diffusion terms that are of the Cahn-Hilliard type. This combination may lead, below a critical temperature, to the instability of uniform deposited layers. This instability triggers the formation of nanostructures corresponding to regular spatial variations of substrate coverage. Patterns wavelengths and symmetries are selected by dynamical variables and not by variational arguments. According to the balance between reaction- and diffusion-induced nonlinearities, a succession of nanostructures including hexagonal arrays of dots, stripes, and localized structures of various types may be obtained. These structures may initiate different growth mechanisms, including Volmer-Weber and Frank-Van der Merwe types of growth. The relevance of this approach to the study of deposited layers of different species is discussed.

Analytical results for front pinning between an hexagonal pattern and a uniform state in pattern-formation systems

In pattern-forming systems, localized patterns are states of intermediate complexity between fully extended ordered patterns and completely irregular patterns. They are formed by stationary fronts enclosing an ordered pattern inside an homogeneous background. In two dimensions, the ordered pattern is most often hexagonal and the conditions for fronts to stabilize are still unknown. In this Letter, we show how the locking of these fronts depends on their orientation relative to the pattern. The theory rests on general asymptotic arguments valid when the spatial scale of the front is slow compared to that of the hexagonal pattern. Our analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulations with the Swift-Hohenberg equation, relevant to hydrodynamical and buckling instabilities, and a nonlinear optical cavity model.

Linking actin networks and cell membrane via a reaction-diffusion-elastic description of nonlinear filopodia initiation

Reaction-diffusion models have been used to describe pattern formation on the cellular scale, and traditionally do not include feedback between cellular shape changes and biochemical reactions. We introduce here a distinct reaction-diffusion-elasticity approach: The reaction-diffusion part describes bistability between two actin orientations, coupled to the elastic energy of the cell membrane deformations. This coupling supports spatially localized patterns, even when such solutions do not exist in the uncoupled self-inhibited reaction-diffusion system. We apply this concept to describe the nonlinear (threshold driven) initiation mechanism of actin-based cellular protrusions and provide support by several experimental observations.

Localized states in the conserved Swift-Hohenberg equation with cubic nonlinearity

The conserved Swift-Hohenberg equation with cubic nonlinearity provides the simplest microscopic description of the thermodynamic transition from a fluid state to a crystalline state. The resulting phase field crystal model describes a variety of spatially localized structures, in addition to different spatially extended periodic structures. The location of these structures in the temperature versus mean order parameter plane is determined using a combination of numerical continuation in one dimension and direct numerical simulation in two and three dimensions. Localized states are found in the region of thermodynamic coexistence between the homogeneous and structured phases, and may lie outside of the binodal for these states. The results are related to the phenomenon of slanted snaking but take the form of standard homoclinic snaking when the mean order parameter is plotted as a function of the chemical potential, and are expected to carry over to related models with a conserved order parameter.

Localized oscillatory states in magnetoconvection

Localized states are found in many pattern forming systems. The aim of this paper is to investigate the occurrence of oscillatory localized states in two-dimensional Boussinesq magnetoconvection. Initially considering an idealized model, in which the vertical structure of the system has been simplified by a projection onto a small number of Fourier modes, we find that these states are restricted to the low ζ regime (where ζ represents the ratio of the magnetic to thermal diffusivities). These states always exhibit bistability with another nontrivial solution branch; in other words, they show no evidence of subcritical behavior. This is due to the weak flux expulsion that is exhibited by these time-dependent solutions. Using the results of this parameter survey, we locate corresponding states in a fully resolved two-dimensional system, although the mode of oscillation is more complex in this case. This is the first time that a localized oscillatory state, of this kind, has been found in a fully resolved magnetoconvection simulation.

Homoclinic snaking near a codimension-two Turing-Hopf bifurcation point in the Brusselator model

Spatiotemporal Turing-Hopf pinning solutions near the codimension-two Turing-Hopf point of the one-dimensional Brusselator model are studied. Both the Turing and Hopf bifurcations are supercritical and stable. The pinning solutions exhibit coexistence of stationary stripes of near critical wavelength and time-periodic oscillations near the characteristic Hopf frequency. Such solutions of this nonvariational problem are in contrast to the stationary pinning solutions found in the subcritical Turing regime for the variational Swift-Hohenberg equations, characterized by a spatially periodic pattern embedded in a spatially homogeneous background state. Numerical continuation was used to solve periodic boundary value problems in time for the Fourier amplitudes of the spatiotemporal Turing-Hopf pinning solutions. The solution branches are organized in a series of saddle-node bifurcations similar to the known snaking structures of stationary pinning solutions. We find two intertwined pairs of such branches, one with a defect in the middle of the striped region, and one without. Solutions on one branch of one pair differ from those on the other branch by a π phase shift in the spatially periodic region, i.e., locations of local minima of solutions on one branch correspond to locations of maxima of solutions on the other branch. These branches are connected to branches exhibiting collapsed snaking behavior, where the snaking region collapses to almost a single value in the bifurcation parameter. Solutions along various parts of the branches are described in detail. Time dependent depinning dynamics outside the saddle nodes are illustrated, and a time scale for the depinning transitions is numerically established. Wavelength variation within the snaking region is discussed, and reasons for the variation are given in the context of amplitude equations. Finally, we compare the pinning region to the Maxwell line found numerically by time evolving the amplitude equations.
