Velocity statistics in dissipative, dense granular media

Heterogeneity of dynamics in a modulated colloidal liquid

We study the dynamics of a system of two dimensional colloidal particles subjected to a spatially periodic external potential using Brownian dynamics simulations. We characterize the dynamics in the system by the mean square displacements and the self-van Hove function. The static density plots suggest that system gets into modulated liquid phase in presence of the external potential. We find that diffusion coefficients, obtained from long time mean sqaure displacements, decay exponentially with increasing potential strength. The self-van Hove functions computed from the distribution of particle displacemets in a given time interval show non-gaussian behaviour in directions both parallel and transverse to the external modulation. This suggests heterogeneous dynamics and is supported by particle mobilities and residence times.

Diffusivity and weak clustering in a quasi-two-dimensional granular gas

We present results from a detailed simulation of a quasi-two-dimensional dissipative granular gas, kept in a noncondensed steady state via vertical shaking over a rough substrate. This gas shows a weak power-law decay in the tails of its pair distribution functions, indicating clustering. This clustering depends monotonically on the dissipation coefficient and disappears when the sphere-sphere collisions are conservative. Clustering is also sensitive to the packing fraction. This gas also displays the standard nonequilibrium characteristics of similar systems, including non-Maxwellian velocity distributions. The diffusion coefficients are calculated over all the conditions of the simulations, and it is found that diluted gases are more diffusive for smaller restitution coefficients.

Model for density waves in gravity-driven granular flow in narrow pipes

A gravity-driven flow of grains through a narrow pipe in vacuum is studied by means of a one-dimensional model with two coefficients of restitution. Numerical simulations show clearly how density waves form when a strikingly simple criterion is fulfilled: that dissipation due to collisions between the grains and the walls of the pipe is greater per collision than that which stems from collisions between particles. Counterintuitively, the highest flow rate is observed when the number of grains per density wave grows large. We find strong indication that the number of grains per density wave always approaches a constant as the particle number tends to infinity, and that collapse to a single wave, which was often observed also in previous simulations, occurs because the number of grains is insufficient for multiple wave formation.
