Symmetry breaking in linearly coupled dynamical lattices

Discrete and Semi-Discrete Multidimensional Solitons and Vortices: Established Results and Novel Findings

This article presents a concise survey of basic discrete and semi-discrete nonlinear models, which produce two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) solitons, and a summary of the main theoretical and experimental results obtained for such solitons. The models are based on the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations and their generalizations, such as a system of discrete Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations with the Lee-Huang-Yang corrections, the 2D Salerno model (SM), DNLS equations with long-range dipole-dipole and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions, a system of coupled discrete equations for the second-harmonic generation with the quadratic (χ(2)) nonlinearity, a 2D DNLS equation with a superlattice modulation opening mini-gaps, a discretized NLS equation with rotation, a DNLS coupler and its PT-symmetric version, a system of DNLS equations for the spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) binary Bose-Einstein condensate, and others. The article presents a review of the basic species of multidimensional discrete modes, including fundamental (zero-vorticity) and vortex solitons, their bound states, gap solitons populating mini-gaps, symmetric and asymmetric solitons in the conservative and PT-symmetric couplers, cuspons in the 2D SM, discrete SOC solitons of the semi-vortex and mixed-mode types, 3D discrete skyrmions, and some others.

Existence, symmetry breaking bifurcation and stability of two-dimensional optical solitons supported by fractional diffraction

We study existence, bifurcation and stability of two-dimensional optical solitons in the framework of fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation, characterized by its Lévy index, with self-focusing and self-defocusing saturable nonlinearities. We demonstrate that the fractional diffraction system with different Lévy indexes, combined with saturable nonlinearity, supports two-dimensional symmetric, antisymmetric and asymmetric solitons, where the asymmetric solitons emerge by way of symmetry breaking bifurcation. Different scenarios of bifurcations emerge with the change of stability: the branches of asymmetric solitons split off the branches of unstable symmetric solitons with the increase of soliton power and form a supercritical type bifurcation for self-focusing saturable nonlinearity; the branches of asymmetric solitons bifurcates from the branches of unstable antisymmetric solitons for self-defocusing saturable nonlinearity, featuring a convex shape of the bifurcation loops: an antisymmetric soliton loses its stability via a supercritical bifurcation, which is followed by a reverse bifurcation that restores the stability of the symmetric soliton. Furthermore, we found a scheme of restoration or destruction the symmetry of the antisymmetric solitons by controlling the fractional diffraction in the case of self-defocusing saturable nonlinearity.

Zigzag Solitons and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Discrete Rabi Lattices with Long-Range Hopping

A new type of discrete soliton, which we call zigzag solitons, is founded in two-component discrete Rabi lattices with long-range hopping. The spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of zigzag solitons is also studied. Through numerical simulation, we found that by enhancing the intensity of the long-range linearly-coupled effect or increasing the total input power, the SSB process from the symmetric soliton to the asymmetric soliton will switch from the supercritical to subcritical type. These results can help us better understand both the discrete solitons and the Rabi coupled effect.

Cross-symmetric dipolar-matter-wave solitons in double-well chains

We consider a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an array of two-well systems with an arbitrary orientation of the dipoles relative to the system's axis. The system can be built as a chain of local traps sliced into two parallel lattices by a repelling laser sheet. It is modeled by a pair of coupled discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equations, with dipole-dipole self-interactions and cross interactions. When the dipoles are not polarized perpendicular or parallel to the lattice, the cross interaction is asymmetric, replacing the familiar symmetric two-component discrete solitons by two new species of cross-symmetric ones, viz., on-site- and off-site-centered solitons, which are strongly affected by the orientation of the dipoles and separation between the parallel lattices. A very narrow region of intermediate asymmetric discrete solitons is found at the boundary between the on- and off-site families. Two different types of solitons in the PT-symmetric version of the system are constructed too, and stability areas are identified for them.

Soliton nanoantennas in two-dimensional arrays of quantum dots

We consider two-dimensional (2D) arrays of self-organized semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) strongly interacting with electromagnetic field in the regime of Rabi oscillations. The QD array built of two-level states is modelled by two coupled systems of discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Localized modes in the form of single-peaked fundamental and vortical stationary Rabi solitons and self-trapped breathers have been found. The results for the stability, mobility and radiative properties of the Rabi modes suggest a concept of a self-assembled 2D soliton-based nano-antenna, which is stable against imperfections In particular, we discuss the implementation of such a nano-antenna in the form of surface plasmon solitons in graphene, and illustrate possibilities to control their operation by means of optical tools.

Discrete solitons and vortices on two-dimensional lattices of PT-symmetric couplers

We introduce a 2D network built of PT-symmetric dimers with on-site cubic nonlinearity, the gain and loss elements of the dimers being linked by parallel square-shaped lattices. The system may be realized as a set of PT-symmetric dual-core waveguides embedded into a photonic crystal. The system supports PT-symmetric and antisymmetric fundamental solitons (FSs) and on-site-centered solitary vortices (OnVs). Stability of these discrete solitons is the central topic of the consideration. Their stability regions in the underlying parameter space are identified through the computation of stability eigenvalues, and verified by direct simulations. Symmetric FSs represent the system's ground state, being stable at lowest values of the power, while anti-symmetric FSs and OnVs are stable at higher powers. Symmetric OnVs, which are also stable at lower powers, are remarkably robust modes: on the contrary to other PT-symmetric states, unstable OnVs do not blow up, but spontaneously rebuild themselves into stable FSs.

Discrete localized modes supported by an inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinearity

We report that infinite and semi-infinite lattices with spatially inhomogeneous self-defocusing (SDF) onsite nonlinearity, whose strength increases rapidly enough toward the lattice periphery, support stable unstaggered (UnST) discrete bright solitons, which do not exist in lattices with the spatially uniform SDF nonlinearity. The UnST solitons coexist with stable staggered (ST) localized modes, which are always possible under the defocusing onsite nonlinearity. The results are obtained in a numerical form and also by means of variational approximation (VA). In the semi-infinite (truncated) system, some solutions for the UnST surface solitons are produced in an exact form. On the contrary to surface discrete solitons in uniform truncated lattices, the threshold value of the norm vanishes for the UnST solitons in the present system. Stability regions for the novel UnST solitons are identified. The same results imply the existence of ST discrete solitons in lattices with the spatially growing self-focusing nonlinearity, where such solitons cannot exist either if the nonlinearity is homogeneous. In addition, a lattice with the uniform onsite SDF nonlinearity and exponentially decaying intersite coupling is introduced and briefly considered. Via a similar mechanism, it may also support UnST discrete solitons. The results may be realized in arrayed optical waveguides and collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in deep optical lattices. A generalization for a two-dimensional system is briefly considered.

Nonlinear surface lattice coupler

We study two-component surface solitons in a pair of linearly coupled truncated waveguiding arrays with the Kerr nonlinearity. Symmetric solitons have a very small stability area, while those that are antisymmetric and asymmetric are stable in vast regions. Below a critical value of the coupling constant, branches of the symmetric and asymmetric modes separate, and accordingly, asymmetric solitons cease to bifurcate from the symmetric ones, providing the first example of asymmetric modes in nonlinear couplers that do not originate from symmetric counterparts.

Symmetry breaking and restoring wave transmission in diode-antidiode double chains

We introduce a system of two parallel-coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger inhomogeneous chains. Each one favors the unidirectional transmission of incident packets, in the opposite directions with respect to each other. Two different configurations of the diode-antidiode pair are considered, i.e., a ladder and a plaquette. They feature, respectively, the uniform transverse linear coupling or the coupling limited to the central nonlinear segment of the system. In the case of weak linear coupling, the symmetry breaking is observed (i.e., the pair still features the diode behavior), while the moderately strong coupling restores the symmetry, making the transmission effectively bidirectional. In the case of the ladder, an oscillatory dependence of the transmission on the strength of the coupling is observed and qualitatively explained.

Unstaggered-staggered solitons in two-component discrete nonlinear Schrödinger lattices

We present stable bright solitons built of coupled unstaggered and staggered components in a symmetric system of two discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations with the attractive self-phase-modulation nonlinearity, coupled by the repulsive cross-phase-modulation interaction. These mixed modes are of a "symbiotic" type, as each component in isolation may only carry ordinary unstaggered solitons. The results are obtained in an analytical form, using the variational and Thomas-Fermi approximations (VA and TFA), and the generalized Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) criterion for the evaluation of the stability. The analytical predictions are verified against numerical results. Almost all the symbiotic solitons are predicted by the VA quite accurately and are stable. Close to a boundary of the existence region of the solitons (which may feature several connected branches), there are broad solitons which are not well approximated by the VA and are unstable.

Solitons in a chain of parity-time-invariant dimers

Dynamics of a chain of interacting parity-time-invariant nonlinear dimers is investigated. A dimer is built as a pair of coupled elements with equal gain and loss. A relation between stationary soliton solutions of the model and solitons of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation is demonstrated. Approximate solutions for solitons whose width is large in comparison to the lattice spacing are derived, using a continuum counterpart of the discrete equations. These solitons are mobile, featuring nearly elastic collisions. Stationary solutions for narrow solitons, which are immobile due to the pinning by the effective Peierls-Nabarro potential, are constructed numerically, starting from the anticontinuum limit. The solitons with the amplitude exceeding a certain critical value suffer an instability leading to blowup, which is a specific feature of the nonlinear parity-time-symmetric chain, making it dynamically different from DNLS lattices. A qualitative explanation of this feature is proposed. The instability threshold drops with the increase of the gain-loss coefficient, but it does not depend on the lattice coupling constant, nor on the soliton's velocity.

Interface solitons in locally linked two-dimensional lattices

Existence, stability, and dynamics of soliton complexes, centered at the site of a single transverse link connecting two parallel two-dimensional (2D) lattices, are investigated. The system with the onsite cubic self-focusing nonlinearity is modeled by the pair of discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations linearly coupled at the single site. Symmetric, antisymmetric, and asymmetric complexes are constructed by means of the variational approximation (VA) and numerical methods. The VA demonstrates that the antisymmetric soliton complexes exist in the entire parameter space, while the symmetric and asymmetric modes can be found below a critical value of the coupling parameter. Numerical results confirm these predictions. The symmetric complexes are destabilized via a supercritical symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation, which gives rise to stable asymmetric modes. The antisymmetric complexes are subject to oscillatory and exponentially instabilities in narrow parametric regions. In bistability areas, stable antisymmetric solitons coexist with either symmetric or asymmetric ones.

Symmetry breaking of solitons in two-component Gross-Pitaevskii equations

We revisit the problem of the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of solitons in two-component linearly coupled nonlinear systems, adding the nonlinear interaction between the components. With this feature, the system may be realized in new physical settings, in terms of optics and the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). SSB bifurcation points are found analytically, for both symmetric and antisymmetric solitons (the symmetry between the two components is meant here). Asymmetric solitons, generated by the bifurcations, are described by means of the variational approximation (VA) and numerical methods, demonstrating good accuracy of the variational results. In the space of the self-phase-modulation (SPM) parameter and soliton's norm, a border separating stable symmetric and asymmetric solitons is identified. The nonlinear coupling may change the character of the SSB bifurcation, from subcritical to supercritical. Collisions between moving asymmetric and symmetric solitons are investigated too. Antisymmetric solitons are destabilized by a supercritical bifurcation, which gives rise to self-confined modes featuring Josephson oscillations, instead of stationary states with broken antisymmetry. An additional instability against delocalized perturbations is also found for the antisymmetric solitons.
