Dielectric properties of biological cells in the dipolar approximation for the single-shell ellipsoidal model: the effect of localized surface charge distributions at the membrane interface

Ambiguity in the interpretation of the low-frequency dielectric properties of biological tissues

The frequency-dependent behaviour of the dielectric properties of biological tissues in the frequency range below 1 kHz has been under debate since the past century. Here, we reanalyse the raw data of the main resource of the dielectric properties of biological tissues in impedance representation. Employing a Kramers-Kronig validity test and parameter estimation techniques, we can describe the data by two physical parametric models that correspond to opposing biophysical interpretations: on the one hand the data can be explained only by intrinsic tissue properties, but on the other hand evidence for electrode-specific effects can be found for all tissues under investigation. The first interpretation would justify the continued use of a parametric model comprising four Cole-Cole dispersions, which describe the dielectric properties from extremely low to very high frequencies. As an alternative that is in accordance with the second interpretation, we suggest to omit the slowest of the four dispersions in the model and increase the static conductivity to account for a frequency-independent conductivity below 1 kHz.

Electrochemical Impedance Characterization of Blood Cell Suspensions-Part 2: Three-Phase Systems With Single-Shelled Particles

The analyses presented in Part 1 are expanded to three-phase composite materials. The theory developed in Part 1 is used for analytical and numerical calculations of dielectric spectra. In this study, three-phase systems with single-shelled particles were considered. The disordered particle distribution, aligned orientation of particles, and particles placed in different lattice structures are studied. It is shown that both two-phase and three-phase composites exhibit β-dispersion, while three-phase composites additionally exhibit δ-dispersion. This is the fundamental difference in the spectra for two- and three-phase materials. In the case of aligned orientation, the effective permittivity in the direction perpendicular to the spheroid plane exhibits a maximum at a volume fraction of approximately 0.5. Both two- and three-phase materials display this behavior. This may be of interest for the development of new metamaterials. The dielectric properties of composite materials with random distribution and periodic arrangement of particles differ significantly. The dielectric spectrum of erythrocyte suspension in plasma was measured by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The measurement system consisted of a small chamber with two planar electrodes placed at the bottom and an impedance analyzer. The dielectric properties of erythrocyte cytoplasm and membrane were numerically determined based on experimental data. The measurement of the dielectric properties of whole blood and blood components is very promising for various medical applications.

Numerical analysis of electromagnetic interactions by a cell during the mitosis phases

In this work, a numerical study of the interaction of an electromagnetic field with a biological cell in the different phases of mitosis is presented. In particular, the validity of the single-shell model during mitosis from a geometrical viewpoint has been considered. We consider the Jurkat cell for our analysis and model the content of the cell, composed by the nucleus and different organelles immersed in cytoplasm and delimited by the cell membrane, as a single material with appropriate electromagnetic properties derived by making use of effective medium approximation methods, i.e., we used a quasistatic approach to deal with the cell. To validate the model, a comparison between the original and 2 approximated geometry models is made and the results are in very good accordance. Subsequently, an analysis of the scattered field indicates that the most sensitive component to the mitosis phase is the one parallel to the segment joining the centers of the cells.

Some physicochemical remarks on spontaneous emulsification of vitreal tamponades

The importance of gravitational instability in determining the emulsification of vitreal tamponades is discussed. Theoretical results and numerical simulations indicate that the spontaneous formation of water-silicon oil is a rare event and that the very low concentration of surface active agents cannot justify the systematic formation of emulsions. The gravitational instabilities seem to play the main role. Our theoretical results seem in agreement with the experimental evidences; furthermore they indicate a future research line for the improvement of endotamponades. Indeed, the use of biodegradable antifoam may avoid the formation of bubbles and delay the formation of emulsions.

Plasmonic Near-Field Absorbers for Ultrathin Solar Cells

If the active layer of efficient solar cells could be made 100 times thinner than in today's thin film devices, their economic competitiveness would greatly benefit. However, conventional solar cell materials do not have the optical capability to allow for such thickness reductions without a substantial loss of light absorption. To address this challenge, the use of plasmon resonances in metal nanostructures to trap light and create charge carriers in a nearby semiconductor material is an interesting opportunity. In this Perspective, recent progress with regards to ultrathin (∼10 nm) plasmonic nanocomposites is reviewed. Their optimal internal geometry for plasmon near-field induced absorption is discussed, and a zero thickness effective medium representation is used to optimize stacks including an Al back reflector for photovoltaics. This shows that high conversion efficiencies (>20%) are possible even when taking surface scattering effects and thin passivating layers inserted between the metal and semiconductor into account.

Electromechanical effects on multilayered cells in nonuniform rotating fields

We use the Maxwell stress tensor to calculate the dielectrophoretic force and electrorotational torque acting on a realistic four-shelled model of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a nonuniform rotating electric field generated by four coplanar square electrodes. The comparison of these results with numerical calculations of the dipolar and quadrupolar contributions obtained from an integral equation for the polarization charge density shows the effect of the quadrupole contribution in the proximity of the electrode plane. We also show that under typical experimental conditions the substitution of the multilayered cell by an equivalent cell with homogeneous permittivity underestimates the quadrupole contribution to the force and torque by 1 order of magnitude.
