Search for microscopic and macroscopic biaxiality in the cybotactic nematic phase of new oxadiazole bent-core mesogens

Macroscopic Biaxial Order in Multilayer Films of Bent-Core Liquid Crystals Deposited by Combined Langmuir-Blodgett/Langmuir-Schaefer Technique

Bent-core liquid crystals, a class of mesogenic compounds with non-linear molecular structures, are well known for their unconventional mesophases, characterized by complex molecular (and supramolecular) ordering and often featuring biaxial and polar properties. In the nematic phase, their unique behavior is manifested in the formation of nano-sized biaxial clusters of layered molecules (cybotactic groups). While this prompted their consideration in the quest for nematic biaxiality, experimental evidence indicates that the cybotactic order is only short-ranged and that the nematic phase is macroscopically uniaxial. By combining atomic force microscopy, neutron reflectivity and wide-angle grazing-incidence X-ray scattering, here, we demonstrate that multilayer films of a bent-core nematic, deposited on silicon by a combined Langmuir-Blodgett and Langmuir-Schaefer approach, exhibit macroscopic in-plane ordering, with the long molecular axis tilted with respect to the sample surface and the short molecular axis (i.e., the apex bisector) aligned along the film compression direction. We thus propose the use of Langmuir films as an effective way to study and control the complex anchoring properties of bent-core liquid crystals.

Liquid Crystalline Systems from Nature and Interaction of Living Organisms with Liquid Crystals

Biomaterials, which are substances interacting with biological systems, have been extensively explored to understand living organisms and obtain scientific inspiration (such as biomimetics). However, many aspects of biomaterials have yet to be fully understood. Because liquid crystalline phases are ubiquitously found in biomaterials (e.g., cholesterol, amphiphile, DNA, cellulose, bacteria), therefore, a wide range of research has made attempts to approach unresolved issues with the concept of liquid crystals (LCs). This review presents these studies that address the interactive correlation between biomaterials and LCs. Specifically, intrinsic LC behavior of various biomaterials such as DNA, cellulose nanocrystals, and bacteriaare first introduced. Second, the dynamics of bacteria in LC media are addressed, with focus on how bacteria interact with LCs, and how dynamics of bacteria can be controlled by exploiting the characteristics of LCs. Lastly, how the strong correlation between LCs and biomaterials has been leveraged to design a new class of biosensors with additional functionalities (e.g., self-regulated drug release) that are not available in previous systems is reviewed. Examples addressed in this review convey the message that the intersection between biomaterials and LCs offers deep insights into fundamental understanding of biomaterials, and provides resources for development of transformative technologies.

In situ measurements of twist and bend elastic constants in the oblique helicoidal cholesteric

Unique electro-optical properties of the oblique helicoidal cholesteric (Ch_{OH}) stem from its heliconical director structure. An applied electric field preserves the single-harmonic modulation of the director while tuning the Ch_{OH} period and the corresponding Bragg-peak wavelength within a broad spectral range. We use the response of Ch_{OH} to the electric field to measure the elastic constants of twist K_{22} and bend K_{33} directly in the cholesteric phase. The temperature dependencies of K_{22} and K_{33} allow us to determine the range of the electric tunability of the Ch_{OH} pitch and the heliconical angle. The data are important for understanding how molecular composition and chirality influence macroscopic elastic properties of the chiral liquid crystals and for the development of Ch_{OH}-based optical devices.

Nanoscale Structure of Langmuir–Blodgett Film of Bent-Core Molecules

Bent-core mesogens (BCMs) are a class of thermotropic liquid crystals featuring several unconventional properties. However, the interpretation and technological exploitation of their unique behavior have been hampered by the difficulty of controlling their anchoring at surfaces. To tackle this issue, we report the nanoscale structural characterization of BCM films prepared using the Langmuir–Blodgett technique. Even though BCMs are quite different from typical amphiphilic molecules, we demonstrate that stable molecular films form over water, which can then be transferred onto silicon substrates. The combination of Brewster angle microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray reflectivity measurements shows that the molecules, once transferred onto a solid substrate, form a bilayer structure with a bottom layer of flat molecules and an upper layer of upright molecules. These results suggest that Langmuir–Blodgett films of BCMs can provide a useful means to control the alignment of this class of liquid crystals.

Nanostructure of Unconventional Liquid Crystals Investigated by Synchrotron Radiation

The macroscopic properties of novel liquid crystal (LC) systems-LCs with unconventional molecular structure as well as conventional LCs in unconventional geometries-directly descend from their mesoscopic structural organization. While X-ray diffraction (XRD) is an obvious choice to investigate their nanoscale structure, conventional diffractometry is often hampered by experimental difficulties: the low scattering power and short-range positional order of the materials, resulting in weak and diffuse diffraction features; the need to perform measurements in challenging conditions, e.g., under magnetic and/or electric fields, on thin films, or at high temperatures; and the necessity to probe micron-sized volumes to tell the local structural properties from their macroscopic average. Synchrotron XRD allows these problems to be circumvented thanks to the superior diffraction capabilities (brilliance, q-range, energy and space resolution) and advanced sample environment available at synchrotron beamlines. Here, we highlight the potentiality of synchrotron XRD in the field of LCs by reviewing a selection of experiments on three unconventional LC systems: the potentially biaxial and polar nematic phase of bent-core mesogens; the very high-temperature nematic phase of all-aromatic LCs; and polymer-dispersed liquid crystals. In all these cases, synchrotron XRD unveils subtle nanostructural features that are reflected into macroscopic properties of great interest from both fundamental and technological points of view.

Soft matter from liquid crystals

Liquid crystals (LCs) are fluids within which molecules exhibit long-range orientational order, leading to anisotropic properties such as optical birefringence and curvature elasticity. Because the ordering of molecules within LCs can be altered by weak external stimuli, LCs have been widely used to create soft matter systems that respond optically to electric fields (LC display), temperature (LC thermometer) or molecular adsorbates (LC chemical sensor). More recent studies, however, have moved beyond investigations of optical responses of LCs to explore the design of complex LC-based soft matter systems that offer the potential to realize more sophisticated functions (e.g., autonomous, self-regulating chemical responses to mechanical stimuli) by directing the interactions of small molecules, synthetic colloids and living cells dispersed within the bulk of LCs or at their interfaces. These studies are also increasingly focusing on LC systems driven beyond equilibrium states. This review presents one perspective on these advances, with an emphasis on the discovery of fundamental phenomena that may enable new technologies. Three areas of progress are highlighted; (i) directed assembly of amphiphilic molecules either within topological defects of LCs or at aqueous interfaces of LCs, (ii) templated polymerization in LCs via chemical vapor deposition, an approach that overcomes fundamental challenges related to control of LC phase behavior during polymerization, and (iii) studies of colloids in LCs, including chiral colloids, soft colloids that are strained by LCs, and active colloids that are driven into organized states by dissipation of energy (e.g. bacteria). These examples, and key unresolved issues discussed at the end of this perspective, serve to convey the message that soft matter systems that integrate ideas from LC, surfactant, polymer and colloid sciences define fertile territory for fundamental studies and creation of future transformative technologies.

Biaxial, Twist-bend, and Splay-bend Nematic Phases of Banana-shaped Particles Revealed by Lifting the "Smectic Blanket"

We perform an extensive computational study on the phase behavior of hard banana-shaped particles, and show that biaxial, twist-bend, and splay-bend nematic phases are metastable with respect to a smectic phase for a system of hard bent spherocylinders. However, if the smectic phase is destabilized-either by polydispersity in the particle length or by curvature in the particle shape-stable biaxial, twist-bend, and splay-bend nematic phases are obtained. This provides a unified and consistent picture on the subtle role of particle shape on the phase behavior of bent rods.

Phase behavior of hard C_{2h}-symmetric particle systems

Using Monte Carlo numerical simulation, this work sketches the phase diagram of systems of certain hard C_{2h}-symmetric particles, formed by gluing two aligned and displaced hard spherocylinders with a cylindrical-length-to-diameter ratio realistically, if viewed not only from the lyotropic colloidal liquid-crystal side but also from the thermotropic low-molecular-mass liquid-crystal side, equal to 5, as a function of the displacement. Several distinctive phases are observed, such as a nonperiodic smectic-B-like phase, a nonperiodic smectic-H-like phase, a smectic-C phase, and a short-layer-spacing uniaxial smectic-A phase but no biaxial nematic phase.

Experimental Conditions for the Stabilization of the Lyotropic Biaxial Nematic Mesophase

Nematic phases are some of the most common phases among the lyotropic liquid crystalline structures. They have been widely investigated during last decades. In early studies, two uniaxial nematic phases (discotic, ND, and calamitic, NC) were identified. After the discovery of the third one, named biaxial nematic phase (NB) in 1980, however, some controversies in the stability of biaxial nematic phases began and still continue in the literature. From the theoretical point of view, the existence of a biaxial nematic phase is well established. This review aims to bring information about the historical development of those phases considering the early studies and then summarize the recent studies on how to stabilize different nematic phases from the experimental conditions, especially, choosing the suitable constituents of lyotropic mixtures.

Formation and development of nanometer-sized cybotactic clusters in bent-core nematic liquid crystalline compounds

Two homologue achiral bent-core liquid crystals (LCs), BCN66 and BCN84, in their nematic phases are studied by dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range 10 Hz-10 MHz. In each of these compounds, two relaxation processes are identified and assigned to (i) collective dynamics of molecules in nanometer-sized cybotactic clusters and (ii) individual molecular relaxations, in the ascending order of frequency of the probe field. The temperature and the bias electric field dependence of the dielectric strength and relaxation frequency for these processes are shown to give rise to sharpness in cluster boundaries, increased size and volume fraction in the LC nematic phase. The effect of the bias field on the LC cell is similar to reducing its temperature; both variables increase the cluster size and volume fraction and give rise to sharp cluster boundaries. The findings confirm that dielectric spectroscopy is a powerful and an extremely useful technique to provide a deeper understanding of the mechanism of cybotactic cluster formation in the isotropic liquid and the nematic phase of LCs as a function of temperature and the bias field.

Can off-centre mesogen dipoles extend the biaxial nematic range?

We have investigated the possibility of extending the stability range of the biaxial nematic phase by adding an off-centre dipole of various strengths and orientations to elongated biaxial Gay-Berne (GB) mesogens yielding a relatively narrow biaxial nematic (N_bx) phase, and a smectic (S_bx) phase when dipole-less. The effect of dipoles is not easy to predict, and our previous investigations have shown the limited benefits of having a central dipole. Here we show, employing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, that a not too strong off-centre dipole positioned along the longest axis of the nematogen can extend the temperature range of stability of the biaxial nematic phase, also shifting it towards lower temperatures.

Two-state model for nematic liquid crystals made of bent-core molecules

Nematic (N) liquid crystals made of bent-core molecules exhibit unusual physical properties such as an intermediate phase between the N and isotropic (I) phases, a very weak NI transition as inferred from magnetic birefringence measurements in a low field, which is apparently incompatible with a large shift in the NI transition temperature (T_{ni}) measured under a high field. Using our conformational studies on the aromatic cores, we propose that only conformers which are more straightened than those in the ground state (GS) form clusters with a few layers, which persist even in the isotropic phase, as inferred from x-ray and rheological experiments. We present a Landau-de Gennes theory of the medium, including an orientational coupling between the clusters and the GS molecules, which accounts for all the unusual properties. The intermediate phase to isotropic transition is predicted to exhibit critical behavior at a very low magnetic field of <1kG.

Short bent-core molecules: X-ray, polarization, dielectricity, texture and electro-optics investigations

Bent-core liquid crystals based on 1,2,4-oxadiazole as a central unit have been the first mesogens to exhibit a ferroelectric response in the nematic phase. This behavior has been widely recognized as due to the presence of smectic-like polar cybotactic clusters permeating the nematic phase. Unfortunately, these compounds exhibited rather high melting points, about 120 °C, due to the presence of four benzene rings in the molecules. Here we describe the synthesis and physical characterization of a new series of BC mesogens, featuring the same bent core as the previous compounds but shorter outer substituents. By keeping only two benzene rings, we were able to lower the melting points to about 70 °C. However, while X-ray diffraction and dielectric spectroscopy measurements confirm the cybotactic nature of the nematic phase of these compounds, polarization and electro-optical measurements ascribe their polar response to flexoelectricity rather than to spontaneous polarization. Finally, texture investigation suggests the biaxiality of the nematic phase, which is indicated also by conoscopic measurements. These results are important for recognizing size and rigidity limitations in designing bent-core liquid crystal molecules suitable for applications.
