Abstract
It is well-known that the widely utilized fewest switches surface hopping method suffers from the severe overcoherence problem, and thus adiabatic populations calculated by wave functions are generally inferior to those based on active states. More importantly, to achieve a complete description of nonadiabatic dynamics, the density matrix is essential. In this paper, we present an auxiliary branching corrected surface hopping (A-BCSH) method that introduces auxiliary wave packets (WPs) on the adiabatic potential energy surfaces for trajectory branching. Both rapid and gradual separation of WP components on different surfaces are characterized, and thus the correct decoherence time along each trajectory is captured. As demonstrated in the three standard Tully models, A-BCSH exhibits excellent internal consistency. Namely, close adiabatic populations are obtained based on both wave functions and active states. In particular, A-BCSH successfully obtains a reliable time-dependent spatial distribution of the density matrix, which relies only on electronic wave functions. Due to its high performance, our A-BCSH method provides a new and highly promising perspective on further development of more consistent surface hopping with reliable wave function.

Abstract
We report a surface hopping approach in which the implemented linear vibronic coupling Hamiltonian is constructed and the electronic wavefunction is propagated in the reciprocal space. The parameters of the linear vibronic coupling model, including onsite energies, phonon frequencies, and electron-phonon couplings, are calculated with density-functional theory and density-functional perturbation theory and interpolated in fine sampling points of the Brillouin zone with maximally localized Wannier functions. Using this approach, we studied the relaxation dynamics of the photo-excited hot carrier in a one-dimensional periodic carbon chain. The results show that the completeness of the number of Hilbert space k points and the number of phonon q points plays an important role in the hot carrier relaxation processes. By calculating the relaxation times of hot carriers under different reciprocal space sampling and extrapolating with the stretched-compressed exponential function, the relaxation times of hot electrons and holes in the quasi-continuous energy band are obtained. By considering the feedback effect in the hopping processes and analyzing the time-dependent phonon energy in different normal modes, we found that the long-wave longitudinal optical phonons play a major role in the relaxation dynamics of hot electrons and holes. We, therefore, provided herein an efficient and accurate approach for modeling the photophysical processes in periodic solid-state material systems.

Abstract
Polaritonic chemistry exploits strong light-matter coupling between molecules and confined electromagnetic field modes to enable new chemical reactivities. In systems displaying this functionality, the choice of the cavity determines both the confinement of the electromagnetic field and the number of molecules that are involved in the process. While in wavelength-scale optical cavities the light-matter interaction is ruled by collective effects, plasmonic subwavelength nanocavities allow even single molecules to reach strong coupling. Due to these very distinct situations, a multiscale theoretical toolbox is then required to explore the rich phenomenology of polaritonic chemistry. Within this framework, each component of the system (molecules and electromagnetic modes) needs to be treated in sufficient detail to obtain reliable results. Starting from the very general aspects of light-molecule interactions in typical experimental setups, we underline the basic concepts that should be taken into account when operating in this new area of research. Building on these considerations, we then provide a map of the theoretical tools already available to tackle chemical applications of molecular polaritons at different scales. Throughout the discussion, we draw attention to both the successes and the challenges still ahead in the theoretical description of polaritonic chemistry.

Abstract
Mixed quantum-classical dynamics based on the exact factorization exploits the "derived" electron-nuclear correlation (ENC) term aiming for the description of quantum coherences. The ENC contains interactions between the phase of electronic states and nuclear quantum momenta which depend on the spatial shape of the nuclear density. The original surface hopping based on the exact factorization (SHXF) [\textit{J. Phys. Chem. Lett.} \textbf{2018}, \textit{9}, 1097] exploits frozen Gaussian functions to construct the nuclear density in the ENC term while the phase of electronic states is approximated as a fictitious nuclear momentum change. However, in reality, the width of nuclear wave packets varies in time depending on the shape of potential energy surfaces. In this work, we present a modified SHXF approach and a newly-developed Ehrenfest dynamics based on the exact factorization (EhXF) with time-dependent Gaussian functions and phases by enforcing total energy conservation. We perform numerical tests for various one-dimensional two-state model Hamiltonians.Overall, the time-dependent width of Gaussian functions and the energy conserving phase show a reliable decoherence compared to the original frozen Gaussian-based SHXF and the exact quantum mechanical calculation.Especially, the energy conserving phase is crucial for EhXF to reproduce the correct quantum dynamics.

Abstract
We present a new algorithm of the branching corrected mean field (BCMF) method for nonadiabatic dynamics [J. Xu and L. Wang, J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 11, 8283 (2020)], which combines the key advantages of the two existed algorithms, i.e., the deterministic BCMF algorithm based on weights of trajectory branches (BCMF-w) and the stochastic BCMF algorithm with random collapse of the electronic wavefunction (BCMF-s). The resulting mixed deterministic-stochastic BCMF algorithm (BCMF-ws) is benchmarked in a series of standard scattering problems with potential wells on the excited-state surfaces, which are common in realistic systems. In all investigated cases, BCMF-ws holds the same high accuracy while the computational time is reduced about two orders of magnitude compared to the original BCMF-w and BCMF-s algorithms, thus promising for nonadiabatic dynamics simulations of general systems.

Abstract
Trajectory surface hopping combined with ab initio electronic structure calculations is a popular and powerful approach for on-the-fly nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. For large systems, however, this remains a significant challenge because of the unaffordable computational cost of large-scale electronic structure calculations. Here, we present an efficient divide-and-conquer approach to construct the system Hamiltonian based on Wannier analysis and machine learning. In detail, the large system under investigation is first decomposed into small building blocks, and then all possible segments formed by building blocks within a cutoff distance are found out. Ab initio molecular dynamics is carried out to generate a sequence of geometries for each equivalent segment with periodicity. The Hamiltonian matrices in the maximum localized Wannier function (MLWF) basis are obtained for all geometries and utilized to train artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the structure-dependent Hamiltonian elements. Taking advantage of the orthogonality and spatial locality of MLWFs, the one-electron Hamiltonian of a large system at arbitrary geometry can be directly constructed by the trained ANNs. As demonstrations, we study charge transport in a zigzag graphene nanoribbon (GNR), a coved GNR, and a series of hybrid GNRs with a state-of-the-art surface hopping method. The interplay between delocalized and localized states is found to determine the electron dynamics in hybrid GNRs. Our approach has successfully studied GNRs with >10 000 atoms, paving the way for efficient and reliable all-atom nonadiabatic dynamics simulation of general systems.

Abstract
We present mixed quantum-classical approaches based on the exact factorization framework. The electron-nuclear correlation term in the exact factorization enables us to deal with quantum coherences by accounting for electronic and nuclear nonadiabatic couplings effectively within classical nuclei approximation. We compare coupled- and independent-trajectory approximations with each other to understand algorithms in description of the bifurcation of nuclear wave packets and the correct spatial distribution of electronic wave functions along with nuclear trajectories. Finally, we show numerical results for comparisons of coupled- and independent-trajectory approaches for the photoisomerization of a protonated Schiff base from excited state molecular dynamics (ESMD) simulations with the recently developed Python-based ESMD code, namely, the PyUNIxMD program.

Abstract
Theoretical/computational description of excited state molecular dynamics is nowadays a crucial tool for understanding light-matter interactions in many materials. Here we present an open-source Python-based nonadiabatic molecular dynamics program package, namely PyUNIxMD, to deal with mixed quantum-classical dynamics for correlated electron-nuclear propagation. The PyUNIxMD provides many interfaces for quantum chemical calculation methods with commercial and noncommercial ab initio and semiempirical quantum chemistry programs. In addition, the PyUNIxMD offers many nonadiabatic molecular dynamics algorithms such as fewest-switch surface hopping and its derivatives as well as decoherence-induced surface hopping based on the exact factorization (DISH-XF) and coupled-trajectory mixed quantum-classical dynamics (CTMQC) for general purposes. Detailed structures and flows of PyUNIxMD are explained for the further implementations by developers. We perform a nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulation for a molecular motor system as a simple demonstration.

Abstract
We provide an in-depth investigation of the time interval convergence when both trivial crossing and decoherence corrections are applied to Tully's fewest switches surface hopping (FSSH) algorithm. Using one force-based and one energy-based decoherence strategies as examples, we show decoherence corrections intrinsically enhance the trivial crossing problem. We propose a restricted decoherence (RD) strategy and incorporate it into the self-consistent (SC) fewest switches surface hopping algorithm [L. Wang and O. V. Prezhdo, J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 5, 713 (2014)]. The resulting SC-FSSH-RD approach is applied to general Hamiltonians with different electronic couplings and electron-phonon couplings to mimic charge transport in tens to hundreds of molecules. In all cases, SC-FSSH-RD allows us to use a large time interval of 0.1 fs for convergence and the simulation time is reduced by over one order of magnitude. Both the band and hopping mechanisms of charge transport have been captured perfectly. SC-FSSH-RD makes surface hops in the adiabatic representation and can be implemented in both diabatic and locally diabatic representations for wave function propagation. SC-FSSH-RD can potentially describe general nonadiabatic dynamics of electrons and excitons in organics and other materials.

Abstract
Description of correct electron-nuclear couplings is crucial in modeling of nonadiabatic dynamics. Within traditional semiclassical or mixed quantum-classical dynamics, the coupling between quantum electronic states and classical nuclear trajectories is governed by nonadiabatic coupling vectors coupled to classical nuclear momenta. This enables us to develop a very powerful nonadiabatic dynamics algorithm, namely, surface hopping dynamics, which can describe the splitting of nuclear wave packets and detailed balance. Despite its efficiency and practicality, it suffers from the lack of quantum decoherence due to incorrect accounts for the electron-nuclear coupling. Here we present a new surface hopping algorithm based on the exact electron-nuclear correlation from the exact factorization of molecular wave functions. This algorithm demands comparable computational costs to existing surface hopping methods. Numerical simulations with two-state models and a multidimensional multistate realistic molecule show that the electron-nuclear coupling beyond the nonadiabatic coupling terms can describe the quantum coherence properly.

Abstract
We report the first nonadiabatic molecular dynamics study based on the exact factorization of the electron-nuclear wave function. Our approach (a coupled-trajectory mixed quantum-classical, CT-MQC, scheme) is based on the quantum-classical limit derived from systematic and controlled approximations to the full quantum-mechanical problem formulated in the exact-factorization framework. Its strength is the ability to correctly capture quantum (de)coherence effects in a trajectory-based approach to excited-state dynamics. We show this by benchmarking CT-MQC dynamics against a revised version of the popular fewest-switches surface-hopping scheme that is able to fix its well-documented overcoherence issue. The CT-MQC approach is successfully applied to investigation of the photochemistry (ring-opening) of oxirane in the gas phase, analyzing in detail the role of decoherence. This work represents a significant step forward in the establishment of the exact factorization as a powerful tool to study excited-state dynamics, not only for interpretation purposes but mainly for nonadiabatic ab initio molecular dynamics simulations.
