Critical transitions in heterogeneous networks: Loss of low-degree nodes as an early warning signal

A space-fractional bidomain framework for cardiac electrophysiology: 1D alternans dynamics

Cardiac electrophysiology modeling deals with a complex network of excitable cells forming an intricate syncytium: the heart. The electrical activity of the heart shows recurrent spatial patterns of activation, known as cardiac alternans, featuring multiscale emerging behavior. On these grounds, we propose a novel mathematical formulation for cardiac electrophysiology modeling and simulation incorporating spatially non-local couplings within a physiological reaction-diffusion scenario. In particular, we formulate, a space-fractional electrophysiological framework, extending and generalizing similar works conducted for the monodomain model. We characterize one-dimensional excitation patterns by performing an extended numerical analysis encompassing a broad spectrum of space-fractional derivative powers and various intra- and extracellular conductivity combinations. Our numerical study demonstrates that (i) symmetric properties occur in the conductivity parameters' space following the proposed theoretical framework, (ii) the degree of non-local coupling affects the onset and evolution of discordant alternans dynamics, and (iii) the theoretical framework fully recovers classical formulations and is amenable for parametric tuning relying on experimental conduction velocity and action potential morphology.

The effects of beta-cell mass and function, intercellular coupling, and islet synchrony on [Formula: see text] dynamics

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a challenging metabolic disorder characterized by a substantial loss of [Formula: see text]-cell mass and alteration of [Formula: see text]-cell function in the islets of Langerhans, disrupting insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis. The mechanisms for deficiency in [Formula: see text]-cell mass and function during the hyperglycemia development and T2D pathogenesis are complex. To study the relative contribution of [Formula: see text]-cell mass to [Formula: see text]-cell function in T2D, we make use of a comprehensive electrophysiological model of human [Formula: see text]-cell clusters. We find that defect in [Formula: see text]-cell mass causes a functional decline in single [Formula: see text]-cell, impairment in intra-islet synchrony, and changes in the form of oscillatory patterns of membrane potential and intracellular [Formula: see text] concentration, which can lead to changes in insulin secretion dynamics and in insulin levels. The model demonstrates a good correspondence between suppression of synchronizing electrical activity and published experimental measurements. We then compare the role of gap junction-mediated electrical coupling with both [Formula: see text]-cell synchronization and metabolic coupling in the behavior of [Formula: see text] concentration dynamics within human islets. Our results indicate that inter-[Formula: see text]-cellular electrical coupling depicts a more important factor in shaping the physiological regulation of islet function and in human T2D. We further predict that varying the whole-cell conductance of delayed rectifier [Formula: see text] channels modifies oscillatory activity patterns of [Formula: see text]-cell population lacking intercellular coupling, which significantly affect [Formula: see text] concentration and insulin secretion.

Koopman analysis in oscillator synchronization

Synchronization is an important dynamical phenomenon in coupled nonlinear systems, which has been studied extensively in recent years. However, analysis focused on individual orbits seems hard to extend to complex systems, while a global statistical approach is overly cursory. Koopman operator technique seems to balance well the two approaches. In this paper we extend Koopman analysis to the study of synchronization of coupled oscillators by extracting important eigenvalues and eigenfunctions from the observed time series. A renormalization group analysis is designed to derive an analytic approximation of the eigenfunction in the case of weak coupling that dominates the oscillation. For moderate or strong couplings, numerical computation further confirms the importance of the average frequencies and the associated eigenfunctions. The synchronization transition points could be located with quite high accuracy by checking the correlation of neighboring eigenfunctions at different coupling strengths, which is readily applied to other nonlinear systems.

How motifs condition critical thresholds for tipping cascades in complex networks: Linking micro- to macro-scales

In this study, we investigate how specific micro-interaction structures (motifs) affect the occurrence of tipping cascades on networks of stylized tipping elements. We compare the properties of cascades in Erdős-Rényi networks and an exemplary moisture recycling network of the Amazon rainforest. Within these networks, decisive small-scale motifs are the feed forward loop, the secondary feed forward loop, the zero loop, and the neighboring loop. Of all motifs, the feed forward loop motif stands out in tipping cascades since it decreases the critical coupling strength necessary to initiate a cascade more than the other motifs. We find that for this motif, the reduction of critical coupling strength is 11% less than the critical coupling of a pair of tipping elements. For highly connected networks, our analysis reveals that coupled feed forward loops coincide with a strong 90% decrease in the critical coupling strength. For the highly clustered moisture recycling network in the Amazon, we observe regions of a very high motif occurrence for each of the four investigated motifs, suggesting that these regions are more vulnerable. The occurrence of motifs is found to be one order of magnitude higher than in a random Erdős-Rényi network. This emphasizes the importance of local interaction structures for the emergence of global cascades and the stability of the network as a whole.
