Observation of correlations up to the micrometer scale in sliding charge-density waves

Charge density waves tuned by biaxial tensile stress

The precise arrangement and nature of atoms drive electronic phase transitions in condensed matter. To explore this tenuous link, we developed a true biaxial mechanical deformation device working at cryogenic temperatures, compatible with x-ray diffraction and transport measurements, well adapted to layered samples. Here we show that a slight deformation of TbTe3 can have a dramatic influence on its Charge Density Wave (CDW), with an orientational transition from c to a driven by the a/c parameter, a tiny coexistence region near a = c, and without space group change. The CDW transition temperature Tc displays a linear dependence witha / c - 1 while the gap saturates out of the coexistence region. This behaviour is well accounted for within a tight-binding model. Our results question the relationship between gap and Tc in RTe3 systems. This method opens a new route towards the study of coexisting or competing electronic orders in condensed matter.

The Effect of Intensity Fluctuations on Sequential X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy at the X-ray Free Electron Laser Facilities

How materials evolve at thermal equilibrium and under external excitations at small length and time scales is crucial to the understanding and control of material properties. X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) at X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) facilities can in principle capture dynamics of materials that are substantially faster than a millisecond. However, the analysis and interpretation of XPCS data is hindered by the strongly fluctuating X-ray intensity from XFELs. Here we examine the impact of pulse-to-pulse intensity fluctuations on sequential XPCS analysis. We show that the conventional XPCS analysis can still faithfully capture the characteristic time scales, but with substantial decrease in the signal-to-noise ratio of the g2 function and increase in the uncertainties of the extracted time constants. We also demonstrate protocols for improving the signal-to-noise ratio and reducing the uncertainties.

Field-induced dielectric response saturation in o-TaS3

We investigated dependence of the dielectric properties on temperature and electric field below 50 K along the chain direction of o-TaS3. With external electric field increase, two threshold features could be identified. For electric fields somewhat larger than the lower threshold [Formula: see text], the dielectric constant starts to decrease whereas the conductivity increases due to the tunnelling of solitons. For higher external electric field we observe a saturation of dielectric response and analyze that the possible reasons may be related to the polarization behavior of charged solitons. With a decrease in temperature, the effect of external field on the dielectric response of the system weakens gradually and at 13 K it diminishes due to soliton freezing.

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy

In recent years, X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) has emerged as one of the key probes of slow nanoscale fluctuations, applicable to a wide range of condensed matter and materials systems. This article briefly reviews the basic principles of XPCS as well as some of its recent applications, and discusses some novel approaches to XPCS analysis. It concludes with a discussion of the future impact of diffraction-limited storage rings on new types of XPCS experiments, pushing the temporal resolution to nanosecond and possibly even picosecond time scales.

Creep, flow, and phase slippage regimes: an extensive view of the sliding charge-density wave revealed by coherent X-ray diffraction

Coherent x-ray diffraction experiments have been used to probe the dynamics of the charge density wave (CDW) in the quasi-1D system NbSe(3). The 2k(F) satellite reflection associated with the CDW has been measured with respect to external dc currents, below and above the depinning current. These measurements illustrate for the first time the extensive behavior of a moving electronic crystal: the creep regime, with nucleation of CDW dislocations, the flow regime, with motional ordering, along with phase slippage and the role of strong pinning due to an extrinsic defect.

Wavefront analysis of nonlinear self-amplified spontaneous-emission free-electron laser harmonics in the single-shot regime

The single-shot spatial characteristics of the vacuum ultraviolet self-amplified spontaneous emission of a free electron laser (FEL) is measured at different stages of amplification up to saturation with a Hartmann wavefront sensor. We show that the fundamental radiation at 61.5 nm tends towards a single-mode behavior as getting closer to saturation. The measurements are found in good agreement with simulations and theory. A near diffraction limited wavefront was measured. The analysis of Fresnel diffraction through the Hartmann wavefront sensor hole array also provides some further insight for the evaluation of the FEL transverse coherence, of high importance for various applications.

Coherent X-ray diffraction from collagenous soft tissues

Coherent X-ray diffraction has been applied in the imaging of inorganic materials with great success. However, its application to biological specimens has been limited to some notable exceptions, due to the induced radiation damage and the extended nature of biological samples, the last limiting the application of most part of the phasing algorithms. X-ray ptychography, still under development, is a good candidate to overcome such difficulties and become a powerful imaging method for biology. We describe herein the feasibility of applying ptychography to the imaging of biological specimens, in particular collagen rich samples. We report here speckles in diffraction patterns from soft animal tissue, obtained with an optimized small angle X-ray setup that exploits the natural coherence of the beam. By phasing these patterns, dark field images of collagen within tendon, skin, bone, or cornea will eventually be obtained with a resolution of 60-70 nm. We present simulations of the contrast mechanism in collagen based on atomic force microscope images of the samples. Simulations confirmed the 'speckled' nature of the obtained diffraction patterns. Once inverted, the patterns will show the disposition and orientation of the fibers within the tissue, by enhancing the phase contrast between protein and no protein regions of the sample. Our work affords the application of the most innovative coherent X-ray diffraction tools to the study of biological specimens, and this approach will have a significant impact in biology and medicine because it overcomes many of the limits of current microscopy techniques.

Nonequilibrium phases for driven particle systems with effective orientational degrees of freedom

We show that a rich variety of nonequilibrium phases can be realized for interacting particles moving over a periodic substrate when the particles have effective internal orientational degrees of freedom. We specifically study driven colloidal molecular crystals where it has been established that n-merization produces effective orientational degrees of freedom. This system exhibits a polarization effect within the pinned phase, a remarkable variety of sliding phases, and has no single particle pinning regime. Similar dynamics should occur for other driven systems with effective orientational degrees of freedom such as sliding diatomic or higher-order states.
