Spin wave diffraction and perfect imaging of a grating

Acoustic Wave-Induced FeRh Magnetic Phase Transition and Its Application in Antiferromagnetic Pattern Writing and Erasing

We explore the FeRh magnetic phase transition (MPT) and magnetic phase domain (MPD) with the introduction of surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The effects of the SAW pulses with different pulse widths and powers on resistance-temperature loops are investigated, revealing that the SAW can reduce the thermal hysteresis. Meanwhile, the SAW-induced comb-like antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase domains are observed. By changing the pulse width and SAW frequency, we further realize a writing-erasing process of the different comb-like AFM phase domains in the mixed-phase regime of the cooling transition branch. Resistance measurements also display the repeated SAW writing-erasing and the nonvolatile characteristic clearly. MPT paths are measured to demonstrate that short SAW pulses induce isothermal MPT and write magnetic phase patterns via the dynamic strain, whereas long SAW pulses erase patterns via the acoustothermal effect. The Preisach model is introduced to model the FeRh MPT under the SAW pulses, and the calculated results correspond well with our experiments, which reveals the SAW-induced energy modulation promotes FeRh MPT. COMSOL simulations of the SAW strain field also support our results. Our study not only can be used to reduce the thermal hysteresis but also extends the application of the SAW as a tool to write and erase AFM patterns for spintronics and magnonics.

Bias field orientation driven reconfigurable magnonics and magnon-magnon coupling in triangular shaped Ni80Fe20nanodot arrays

Reconfigurable magnonics have attracted intense interest due to their myriad advantages including energy efficiency, easy tunability and miniaturization of on-chip data communication and processing devices. Here, we demonstrate efficient reconfigurability of spin-wave (SW) dynamics as well as SW avoided crossing by varying bias magnetic field orientation in triangular shaped Ni₈₀Fe₂₀nanodot arrays. In particular, for a range of in-plane angles of bias field, we achieve mutual coherence between two lower frequency modes leading to a drastic modification in the ferromagnetic resonance frequency. Significant modification in magnetic stray field distribution is observed at the avoided crossing regime due to anisotropic dipolar interaction between two neighbouring dots. Furthermore, using micromagnetic simulations we demonstrate that the hybrid SW modes propagate longer through an array as opposed to the non-interacting modes present in this system, indicating the possibility of coherent energy transfer of hybrid magnon modes. This result paves the way for the development of integrated on-chip magnonic devices operating in the gigahertz frequency regime.

Spin-Wave Channeling in Magnetization-Graded Nanostrips

Magnetization-graded ferromagnetic nanostrips are proposed as potential prospects to channel spin waves. Here, a controlled reduction of the saturation magnetization enables the localization of the propagating magnetic excitations in the same way that light is controlled in an optical fiber with a varying refraction index. The theoretical approach is based on the dynamic matrix method, where the magnetic nanostrip is divided into small sub-strips. The dipolar and exchange interactions between sub-strips have been considered to reproduce the spin-wave dynamics of the magnonic fiber. The transition from one strip to an infinite thin film is presented for the Damon-Eshbach geometry, where the nature of the spin-wave modes is discussed. An in-depth analysis of the spin-wave transport as a function of the saturation magnetization profile is provided. It is predicted that it is feasible to induce a remarkable channeling of the spin waves along the zones with a reduced saturation magnetization, even when such a reduction is tiny. The results are compared with micromagnetic simulations, where a good agreement is observed between both methods. The findings have relevance for envisioned future spin-wave-based magnonic devices operating at the nanometer scale.

New Dimension in Magnetism and Superconductivity: 3D and Curvilinear Nanoarchitectures

Traditionally, the primary field, where curvature has been at the heart of research, is the theory of general relativity. In recent studies, however, the impact of curvilinear geometry enters various disciplines, ranging from solid-state physics over soft-matter physics, chemistry, and biology to mathematics, giving rise to a plethora of emerging domains such as curvilinear nematics, curvilinear studies of cell biology, curvilinear semiconductors, superfluidity, optics, 2D van der Waals materials, plasmonics, magnetism, and superconductivity. Here, the state of the art is summarized and prospects for future research in curvilinear solid-state systems exhibiting such fundamental cooperative phenomena as ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity are outlined. Highlighting the recent developments and current challenges in theory, fabrication, and characterization of curvilinear micro- and nanostructures, special attention is paid to perspective research directions entailing new physics and to their strong application potential. Overall, the perspective is aimed at crossing the boundaries between the magnetism and superconductivity communities and drawing attention to the conceptual aspects of how extension of structures into the third dimension and curvilinear geometry can modify existing and aid launching novel functionalities. In addition, the perspective should stimulate the development and dissemination of research and development oriented techniques to facilitate rapid transitions from laboratory demonstrations to industry-ready prototypes and eventual products.

A magnon scattering platform

This work describes a general scattering platform that uses magnons to explore the underlying properties of target materials. In this work we show how both phase and amplitude of magnons can be imaged using a nitrogen vacancy center magnetometer and how the scattered pattern of waves can be used to infer geometric and magnetic properties of a target material. To demonstrate this new experimental methodology we use a permalloy disk as our target and show that even with such a simple target unexpected behavior is observed. In addition, we provide a theoretical framework to reconstruct the properties of the target.

Scattering experiments have revolutionized our understanding of nature. Examples include the discovery of the nucleus [R. G. Newton, Scattering Theory of Waves and Particles (1982)], crystallography [U. Pietsch, V. Holý, T. Baumback, High-Resolution X-Ray Scattering (2004)], and the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA [J. D. Watson, F. H. C. Crick, Nature 171, 737–738]. Scattering techniques differ by the type of particles used, the interaction these particles have with target materials, and the range of wavelengths used. Here, we demonstrate a two-dimensional table-top scattering platform for exploring magnetic properties of materials on mesoscopic length scales. Long-lived, coherent magnonic excitations are generated in a thin film of yttrium iron garnet and scattered off a magnetic target deposited on its surface. The scattered waves are then recorded using a scanning nitrogen vacancy center magnetometer that allows subwavelength imaging and operation under conditions ranging from cryogenic to ambient environment. While most scattering platforms measure only the intensity of the scattered waves, our imaging method allows for spatial determination of both amplitude and phase of the scattered waves, thereby allowing for a systematic reconstruction of the target scattering potential. Our experimental results are consistent with theoretical predictions for such a geometry and reveal several unusual features of the magnetic response of the target, including suppression near the target edges and a gradient in the direction perpendicular to the direction of surface wave propagation. Our results establish magnon scattering experiments as a platform for studying correlated many-body systems.

Dynamic control of spin-wave propagation

In this work we present a method to dynamically control the propagation of spin-wave packets. By altering an external magnetic field the refraction of the spin wave at a temporal inhomogeneity is enabled. Since the inhomogeneity is spatially invariant, the spin-wave impulse remains conserved while the frequency is shifted. We demonstrate the stopping and rebound of a traveling Backward-Volume type spin-wave packet.

Order in the Interference of a Long Chain of Bose Condensates with Unrestricted Phases

For a long periodic chain of Bose condensates prepared in the free space, the subsequent evolution and interference dramatically depend on the difference between the phases of the adjacent and more distant condensates. If the phases are equal, the initial periodic density distribution reappears at later times, which is known as the Talbot effect. For randomly related phases, we have found that a spatial order also appears in the interference, while the evolution of the fringes differs with the Talbot effect qualitatively. Even a small phase disorder is sufficient for qualitatively altering the interference, though maybe at long evolution times. This effect may be used for measuring the amount of coherence between adjacent condensates and the correlation length along the chain.

Ferromagnetic domain walls as spin wave filters and the interplay between domain walls and spin waves

Spin waves (SW) are low energy excitations of magnetization in magnetic materials. In the promising field of magnonics, fundamental SW modes, magnons, are accessible in magnetic nanostructure waveguides and carry information. The SW propagates in both metals and insulators via magnetization dynamics. Energy dissipation through damping can be low compared to the Joule heating in conventional circuits. We performed simulations in a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnetic strip and found that the transmission of the propagating SW across the domain wall (DW) depends strongly on the tilt angle of the magnetization at low frequencies. When the SW amplitude is large, the magnetization tilt angle inside the DW changes due to the effective fields. The SW transmission, the DW motion, and the magnetization tilt angle couple to each other, which results in complex DW motion and SW transmission. Both SW filtering and DW motions are key ingredients in magnonics.

Talbot carpet at the transverse plane produced in the diffraction of plane wave from amplitude radial gratings

We experimentally demonstrate and theoretically predict a new and unprecedented optical carpet that includes all the geometric shadow and far-field and near-field diffraction patterns at the transverse plane in the diffraction from a radial grating illuminated by a plane wavefront. The main feature of using radial grating is the continuous change of the spatial period along the radial direction. Therefore, the geometric shadow, and the near-field and far-field diffraction regimes are mixed at various propagation distances, and the traditional definitions for the different diffraction regimes would not apply here. We show that for a given propagation distance, at a certain radial distance the shadow regime changes to the near-field regime and at another certain radial distance, the diffraction pattern changes from a near-field to a far-field case.

Diffraction-Induced Bidimensional Talbot Self-Imaging with Full Independent Period Control

We predict, formulate, and observe experimentally a generalized version of the Talbot effect that allows one to create diffraction-induced self-images of a periodic two-dimensional (2D) waveform with arbitrary control of the image spatial periods. Through the proposed scheme, the periods of the output self-image are multiples of the input ones by any desired integer or fractional factor, and they can be controlled independently across each of the two wave dimensions. The concept involves conditioning the phase profile of the input periodic wave before free-space diffraction. The wave energy is fundamentally preserved through the self-imaging process, enabling, for instance, the possibility of the passive amplification of the periodic patterns in the wave by a purely diffractive effect, without the use of any active gain.

Design and construction of a spin-wave lens

In this work, we present the focusing of a Damon-Eshbach wave in a Ni₈₀Fe₂₀ film by a shaped, discrete transition of the film thickness. We devised an algorithm to determine the required shape of a spin-wave lens. Due to the anisotropy three geometries qualify as plano-convex lenses. One lens geometry has been realized experimentally and the emitted spin-wave pattern is investigated by time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy.

Controlling the Spontaneous Emission Rate of Quantum Wells in Rolled-Up Hyperbolic Metamaterials

We experimentally demonstrate the enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate of GaAs quantum wells embedded in rolled-up metamaterials. We fabricate microtubes whose walls consist of alternating Ag and (In)(Al)GaAs layers with incorporated active GaAs quantum-well structures. By variation of the layer thickness ratio of the Ag and (In)(Al)GaAs layers we control the effective permittivity tensor of the metamaterial according to an effective medium approach. Thereby, we can design samples with elliptic or hyperbolic dispersion. Time-resolved low temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy supported by finite-difference time-domain simulations reveal a decrease of the quantum well's spontaneous emission lifetime in our metamaterials as a signature of the crossover from elliptic to hyperbolic dispersion.

Direct observation of isolated Damon-Eshbach and backward volume spin-wave packets in ferromagnetic microstripes

The analysis of isolated spin-wave packets is crucial for the understanding of magnetic transport phenomena and is particularly interesting for applications in spintronic and magnonic devices, where isolated spin-wave packets implement an information processing scheme with negligible residual heat loss. We have captured microscale magnetization dynamics of single spin-wave packets in metallic ferromagnets in space and time. Using an optically driven high-current picosecond pulse source in combination with time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy probed by femtosecond laser pulses, we demonstrate phase-sensitive real-space observation of spin-wave packets in confined permalloy (Ni80Fe20) microstripes. Impulsive excitation permits extraction of the dynamical parameters, i.e. phase- and group velocities, frequencies and wave vectors. In addition to well-established Damon-Eshbach modes our study reveals waves with counterpropagating group- and phase-velocities. Such unusual spin-wave motion is expected for backward volume modes where the phase fronts approach the excitation volume rather than emerging out of it due to the negative slope of the dispersion relation. These modes are difficult to excite and observe directly but feature analogies to negative refractive index materials, thus enabling model studies of wave propagation inside metamaterials.

Spectrum gaps of spin waves generated by interference in a uniform nanostripe waveguide

We studied spin waves excited by two or more excitation sources in a uniform nanostripe waveguide without periodic structures. Several distinct spectrum gaps formed by spin waves interference rather than by Bragg reflection were observed. We found the center frequency and the number of spectrum gaps of spin waves can be controlled by modulating the distance, number and width of the excitation sources. The results obtained by micromagnetic simulations agree well with that of analytical calculations. Our work therefore paves a new way to control the spectrum gaps of spin waves, which is promising for future spin wave-based devices.
