Colloids in active fluids: anomalous microrheology and negative drag

Microrheology of active suspensions

We study the microrheology of active suspensions through direct hydrodynamic simulations using model pusher-like microswimmers. We demonstrate that the friction coefficient of a probe particle is notably reduced by hydrodynamic interactions (HIs) among a moving probe and the swimmers. When a swimmer approaches a probe from the rear (front) side, the repulsive HIs between them are weakened (intensified), which results in a slight front-rear asymmetry in swimmer orientation distribution around the probe, creating a significant additional net driving force acting on the probe from the rear side. The present drag-reduction mechanism qualitatively differs from that of the viscosity-reduction observed in sheared bulk systems and depends on probing details. This study provides insights into our fundamental knowledge of hydrodynamic effects in active suspensions and serves as a practical example illuminating distinctions between micro- and macrorheology measurements.

Anomalous dynamics of a passive droplet in active turbulence

Motion of a passive deformable object in an active environment serves as a representative of both in-vivo systems such as intracellular particle motion in Acanthamoeba castellanii, or in-vitro systems such as suspension of beads inside dense swarms of Escherichia coli. Theoretical modeling of such systems is challenging due to the requirement of well resolved hydrodynamics which can explore the spatiotemporal correlations around the suspended passive object in the active fluid. We address this critical lack of understanding using coupled hydrodynamic equations for nematic liquid crystals with finite active stress to model the active bath, and a suspended nematic droplet with zero activity. The droplet undergoes deformation fluctuations and its movement shows periods of "runs" and "stays". At relatively low interfacial tension, the droplet begins to break and mix with the outer active bath. We establish that the motion of the droplet is influenced by the interplay of spatial correlations of the flow and the size of the droplet. The mean square displacement shows a transition from ballistic to normal diffusion which depends on the droplet size. We discuss this transition in relation to spatiotemporal scales associated with velocity correlations of the active bath and the droplet.

Dynamics of self-propelled particles in vibrated dense granular media

We study a system consisting of a few self-propelled particles (SPPs) placed among a crowd of densely packed granular particles that are vertically vibrated in a two-dimensional circular confinement. Our experiments reveal two important findings. First, an SPP exhibits a fractal renewal process within the dense granular medium, which induces a superdiffusive behavior whose diffusion exponent increases with its aspect ratio. Second, the SPPs eventually reach the boundary and form a moving cluster, which transitions from the moving state to the static state as the number of SPPs is increased. These results suggest a simple and effective method of modulating the fluidity and directionality of granular systems via controlling the shape and the number of SPPs.

Symmetry-breaking motility of penetrable objects in active fluids

We investigate how a symmetric penetrable object immersed in an active fluid becomes motile due to a negative drag acting in the direction of its velocity. While similar phenomena have been reported only for active fluids that possess polar or nematic order, we demonstrate that such motility can occur even in active fluids without any preexisting order. The emergence of object motility is characterized by both continuous and discontinuous transitions associated with the symmetry-breaking bifurcation of the object's steady-state velocity. Furthermore, we also discuss the relevance of the transitions to the nonmonotonic particle-size dependence of the object's diffusion coefficient.

Active turbulence and spontaneous phase separation in inhomogeneous extensile active gels

We report numerical results for the hydrodynamics of inhomogeneous lyotropic and extensile active nematic gels. By simulating the coupled Cahn-Hilliard, Navier-Stokes, and Beris-Edwards equation for the evolution of the composition, flow and orientational order of an active nematic, we ask whether composition variations are important to determine its emergent physics. As in active gels of uniform composition, we find that increasing either activity or nematic tendency (e.g., overall active matter concentration) triggers a transition between an isotropic passive phase and an active nematic one. We show that composition inhomogeneities are important in the latter phase, where we find three types of possible dynamical regimes. First, we observe regular patterns with defects and vortices: these exist close to the passive-active transition. Second, for larger activity, or deeper in the nematic phase, we find active turbulence, as in active gels of uniform composition, but with exceedingly large composition variation. In the third regime, which is uniquely associated with inhomogeneity and occurs for large nematic tendency and low activity, we observe spontaneous microphase separation into active and passive domains. The microphase separated regime is notable in view of the absence of an explicit demixing term in the underlying free energy which we use, and we provide a theoretical analysis based on the common tangent construction which explains its existence. We hope this regime can be probed experimentally in the future.

Harvesting information to control nonequilibrium states of active matter

We propose to use a correlated noise bath to drive an optically trapped Brownian particle that mimics active biological matter. Due to the flexibility and precision of our setup, we are able to control the different parameters that drive the stochastic motion of the particle with unprecedented accuracy, thus reaching strongly correlated regimes that are not easily accessible with real active matter. In particular, by using the correlation time (i.e., the "color") of the noise as a control parameter, we can trigger transitions between two nonequilibrium steady states with no expended work, but only a calorific cost. Remarkably, the measured heat production is directly proportional to the spectral entropy of the correlated noise, in a fashion that is reminiscent of Landauer's principle. Our procedure can be viewed as a method for harvesting information from the active fluctuations.

Passive probe particle in an active bath: can we tell it is out of equilibrium?

We study a passive probe immersed in a fluid of active particles. Despite the system's non-equilibrium nature, the trajectory of the probe does not exhibit non-equilibrium signatures: its velocity distribution remains Gaussian, the second fluctuation dissipation theorem is not fundamentally violated, and the motion does not indicate breaking of time reversal symmetry. To tell that the probe is out of equilibrium requires examination of its behavior in tandem with that of the active fluid: the kinetic temperature of the probe does not equilibrate to that of the surrounding active particles. As a strategy to diagnose non-equilibrium from probe trajectories alone, we propose to examine their response to a small perturbation which reveals a non-equilibrium signature through a violation of the first fluctuation dissipation theorem.

Mesoscopic simulations of active nematics

Coarse-grained, mesoscale simulations are invaluable for studying soft condensed matter because of their ability to model systems in which a background solvent plays a substantial role but is not the primary interest. Such methods generally model passive solvents; however, far-from-equilibrium systems may also be composed of complex solutes suspended in an active fluid. Yet, few coarse-grained simulation methods exist to model an active medium. We introduce an algorithm to simulate active nematics, which builds on multiparticle collision dynamics (MPCD) for passive fluctuating nematohydrodynamics by introducing dipolar activity in the local collision operator. Active nematic MPCD (AN-MPCD) simulations not only exhibit the key characteristics of active nematic turbulence but, as a particle-based algorithm, also reproduce crucial attributes of active particle models. Thus, mesoscopic AN-MPCD is an approach that bridges microscopic and continuum descriptions, allowing simulations of composite active-passive systems.

Anomalous Transport of Tracers in Active Baths

We derive the long-time dynamics of a tracer immersed in a one-dimensional active bath. In contrast to previous studies, we find that the damping and noise correlations possess long-time tails with exponents that depend on the tracer symmetry. For generic tracers, shape asymmetry induces ratchet effects that alter fluctuations and lead to superdiffusion and friction that grows with time when the tracer is dragged at a constant speed. In the singular limit of a completely symmetric tracer, we recover normal diffusion and finite friction. Furthermore, for small symmetric tracers, the active contribution to the friction becomes negative: active particles enhance motion rather than oppose it. These results show that, in low-dimensional systems, the motion of a passive tracer in an active bath cannot be modeled as a persistent random walker with a finite correlation time.

Driven topological transitions in active nematic films

The topological properties of many materials are central to their behavior. In intrinsically out-of-equilibrium active materials, the dynamics of topological defects can be particularly important. In this paper, local manipulation of the order, dynamics, and topological properties of microtubule-based active nematic films is demonstrated in a joint experimental and simulation study. Hydrodynamic stresses created by magnetically actuated rotation of disk-shaped colloids in proximity to the films compete with internal stresses in the active nematic, influencing the local motion of +1/2 charge topological defects that are intrinsic to the nematic order in the spontaneously turbulent active films. Sufficiently large applied stresses drive the formation of +1 charge topological vortices through the merger of two +1/2 defects. The directed motion of the defects is accompanied by ordering of the vorticity and velocity of the active flows within the film that is qualitatively unlike the response of passive viscous films. Many features of the film's response to the stress are captured by lattice Boltzmann simulations, providing insight into the anomalous viscoelastic nature of the active nematic. The topological vortex formation is accompanied by a rheological instability in the film that leads to significant increase in the flow velocities. Comparison of the velocity profile in vicinity of the vortex with fluid-dynamics calculations provides an estimate of the film viscosity.

Nonlinear microrheology of active Brownian suspensions

The rheological properties of active suspensions are studied via microrheology: tracking the motion of a colloidal probe particle in order to measure the viscoelastic response of the embedding material. The passive probe particle with size R is pulled through the suspension by an external force F^ext, which causes it to translate at some speed U^probe. The bath is comprised of a Newtonian solvent with viscosity η_s and a dilute dispersion of active Brownian particles (ABPs) with size a, characteristic swim speed U₀, and a reorientation time τ_R. The motion of the probe distorts the suspension microstructure, so the bath exerts a reactive force on the probe. In a passive suspension, the degree of distortion is governed by the Péclet number, Pe = F^ext/(k_BT/a), the ratio of the external force to the thermodynamic restoring force of the suspension. In active suspensions, however, the relevant parameter is L^adv/l = U^probeτ_R/U₀τ_R∼F^ext/F^swim, where F^swim = ζU₀ is the swim force that propels the ABPs (ζ is the Stokes drag on a swimmer). When the external forces are weak, L^adv≪l, the autonomous motion of the bath particles leads to "swim-thinning," though the effective suspension viscosity is always greater than η_s. When advection dominates, L^adv≫l, we recover the familiar behavior of the microrheology of passive suspensions. The non-Newtonian behavior for intermediate values of L^adv/l is determined by l/R_c = U₀τ_R/R_c-the ratio of the swimmer's run length l to the geometric length scale associated with interparticle interactions R_c = R + a. The results in this manuscript are approximate as they are based on numerical solutions to mean-field equations that describe the motion of the active bath particles.

Dynamic clustering and re-dispersion in concentrated colloid-active gel composites

We study the dynamics of quasi-two-dimensional concentrated suspensions of colloidal particles in active gels by computer simulations. Remarkably, we find that activity induces a dynamic clustering of colloids even in the absence of any preferential anchoring of the active nematic director at the particle surface. When such an anchoring is present, active stresses instead compete with elastic forces and re-disperse the aggregates observed in passive colloid-liquid crystal composites. Our quasi-two-dimensional "inverse" dispersions of passive particles in active fluids (as opposed to the more common "direct" suspensions of active particles in passive fluids) provide a promising route towards the self-assembly of new soft materials.

Lattice Boltzmann methods and active fluids

We review the state of the art of active fluids with particular attention to hydrodynamic continuous models and to the use of Lattice Boltzmann Methods (LBM) in this field. We present the thermodynamics of active fluids, in terms of liquid crystals modelling adapted to describe large-scale organization of active systems, as well as other effective phenomenological models. We discuss how LBM can be implemented to solve the hydrodynamics of active matter, starting from the case of a simple fluid, for which we explicitly recover the continuous equations by means of Chapman-Enskog expansion. Going beyond this simple case, we summarize how LBM can be used to treat complex and active fluids. We then review recent developments concerning some relevant topics in active matter that have been studied by means of LBM: spontaneous flow, self-propelled droplets, active emulsions, rheology, active turbulence, and active colloids.

Active micromachines: Microfluidics powered by mesoscale turbulence

Dense active matter, from bacterial suspensions and microtubule bundles driven by motor proteins to cellular monolayers and synthetic Janus particles, is characterized by mesoscale turbulence, which is the emergence of chaotic flow structures. By immersing an ordered array of symmetric rotors in an active fluid, we introduce a microfluidic system that exploits spontaneous symmetry breaking in mesoscale turbulence to generate work. The lattice of rotors self-organizes into a spin state where neighboring discs continuously rotate in permanent alternating directions due to combined hydrodynamic and elastic effects. Our virtual prototype demonstrates a new research direction for the design of micromachines powered by the nematohydrodynamic properties of active turbulence.

Active microrheology in active matter systems: Mobility, intermittency, and avalanches

We examine the mobility and velocity fluctuations of a driven particle moving through an active matter bath of self-mobile disks for varied density or area coverage and varied activity. We show that the driven particle mobility can exhibit nonmonotonic behavior that is correlated with distinct changes in the spatiotemporal structures that arise in the active media. We demonstrate that the probe particle velocity distributions exhibit specific features in the different dynamic regimes and identify an activity-induced uniform crystallization that occurs for moderate activity levels and is distinct from the previously observed higher activity cluster phase. The velocity distribution in the cluster phase has telegraph noise characteristics produced when the probe particle moves alternately through high-mobility areas that are in the gas state and low-mobility areas that are in the dense phase. For higher densities and large activities, the system enters what we characterize as an active jamming regime. Here the probe particle moves in intermittent jumps or avalanches that have power-law-distributed sizes that are similar to the avalanche distributions observed for nonactive disk systems near the jamming transition.

Spontaneous motility of passive emulsion droplets in polar active gels

We study by computer simulations the dynamics of a droplet of passive, isotropic fluid, embedded in a polar active gel. The latter represents a fluid of active force dipoles, which exert either contractile or extensile stresses on their surroundings, modelling for instance a suspension of cytoskeletal filaments and molecular motors. When the polarisation of the active gel is anchored normal to the droplet at its surface, the nematic elasticity of the active gel drives the formation of a hedgehog defect; this defect then drives an active flow which propels the droplet forward. In an extensile gel, motility can occur even with tangential anchoring, which is compatible with a defect-free polarisation pattern. In this case, upon increasing activity the droplet first rotates uniformly, and then undergoes a discontinuous nonequilibrium transition into a translationally motile state, powered by bending deformations in the surrounding active medium.

Microrheology of colloidal systems

Microrheology was proposed almost twenty years ago as a technique to obtain rheological properties in soft matter from the microscopic motion of colloidal tracers used as probes, either freely diffusing in the host medium, or subjected to external forces. The former case is known as passive microrheology, and is based on generalizations of the Stokes-Einstein relation between the friction experienced by the probe and the host-fluid viscosity. The latter is termed active microrheology, and extends the measurement of the friction coefficient to the nonlinear-response regime of strongly driven probes. In this review article, we discuss theoretical models available in the literature for both passive and active microrheology, focusing on the case of single-probe motion in model colloidal host media. A brief overview of the theory of passive microrheology is given, starting from the work of Mason and Weitz. Further developments include refined models of the host suspension beyond that of a Newtonian-fluid continuum, and the investigation of probe-size effects. Active microrheology is described starting from microscopic equations of motion for the whole system including both the host-fluid particles and the tracer; the many-body Smoluchowski equation for the case of colloidal suspensions. At low fluid densities, this can be simplified to a two-particle equation that allows the calculation of the friction coefficient with the input of the density distribution around the tracer, as shown by Brady and coworkers. The results need to be upscaled to agree with simulations at moderate density, in both the case of pulling the tracer with a constant force or dragging it at a constant velocity. The full many-particle equation has been tackled by Fuchs and coworkers, using a mode-coupling approximation and the scheme of integration through transients, valid at high densities. A localization transition is predicted for a probe embedded in a glass-forming host suspension. The nonlinear probe-friction coefficient is calculated from the tracer's position correlation function. Computer simulations show qualitative agreement with the theory, but also some unexpected features, such as superdiffusive motion of the probe related to the breaking of nearest-neighbor cages. We conclude with some perspectives and future directions of theoretical models of microrheology.

Bulk rheology and microrheology of active fluids

We simulate macroscopic shear experiments in active nematics and compare them with microrheology simulations where a spherical probe particle is dragged through an active fluid. In both cases we define an effective viscosity: in the case of bulk shear simulations this is the ratio between shear stress and shear rate, whereas in the microrheology case it involves the ratio between the friction coefficient and the particle size. We show that this effective viscosity, rather than being solely a property of the active fluid, is affected by the way chosen to measure it, and strongly depends on details such as the anchoring conditions at the probe surface and on both the system size and the size of the probe particle.
